From the President
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season
and was able to enjoy family, friends, and relaxation.
District Band Auditions and Progressive Dinner were
very interesting this year. Thanks to all for your
patience and understanding as we adjusted to
weather events and icy roads. Many thanks go out
to Julie Moore for planning and organizing the
progressive dinner activities and then re-working
everything a second time. Thanks to Betty Putnam
for organizing the desserts. Thanks to all the
parents who hosted students in their homes and to
all the drivers who safely transported our students to
and from the school. It takes an enormous effort to
pull off an event of this size and it would not be
possible without the help from all our parent
volunteers. Our students did great at District Band
Auditions; we had 42 students make the band with 6
alternates. District Band will be held February 2nd
through 4th
. Hope to see you there.
The Spring Band Assessments are coming up
quickly. All three bands will be judged on both
prepared selections and sight reading. This is the
second half to earning the Virginia Honor Band
Award. High School assessments will be March 9th
–
11th
. Lack Braddock will also host the Middle School
Assessment on March 18th
. This is another huge
event that our parent volunteers make possible. We
appreciate all the support you can provide.
The band will be traveling to Disney World for
their Spring Band Performance Tour April 26th
– 30th
.
The bands will perform and receive critiques and
group tutoring from the nation’s top conductors,
plus have some fun at the happiest place on earth.
Please check your CHARMS account to make sure
you’ve paid the trip fees so your student can attend
these wonderful events!
Check the calendar at the end of this newsletter to
mark your calendars with important events.
Please contact me with any questions! I hope your
family enjoys the upcoming band
activities!

SCRIP 2017 updates and deadlines
Your monthly rebates are added to your student’s
ledger and help offset your cost for the spring band trip.
Those families wishing to apply their rebates towards the
remaining Disney Trip payments ($200 due February 13;
$100 due March 13) must send their request to our
treasurer Nadia Harris ([email protected]). You may
contact the treasurer or the Scrip Coordinator, Kathy
Sawyer ([email protected]) to learn your available
rebates. Rebates will not automatically be applied to your
student’s account. You have the option of applying these
credits anytime a payment is due or pooling them until
later. (Note: your rebate will differ slightly from the report
on your ShopWithScip account log-in which does not
reflect shipping fees on plastic cards).
Don’t forget to order a Disney gift card to send with
your student for souvenirs and incidentals not already
included in the trip package (rather than a debit or
credit card or lots of cash).
For those who started the Scrip process but have not yet
completed your registration for PrestoPay, please do so
ASAP.
Please go online to set up your family account including
registering for PrestoPay. Once your PrestoPay is verified,
you can place your initial order (Set-up is not complete
until you send your confirmation code to the coordinator
and it is verified in the system).
www.shopwithscrip.com
Lake Braddock Band Enrollment Code (for security
reasons, please contact coordinator)
Activate the "Presto Pay" tool and conveniently pay
online at the time you place your order. Payment will be
electronically deducted from your checking account.
There's only a small fee of just 15 cents per order (not
per item), less than the cost of a postage stamp or the
gas used to drop off a check! Easy on the coordinator
and treasurer! ScripNow and Reloads are then available
instantly using your smartphone or computer
Save "myscripwallet.com" mobile website shortcut to
your phone home screen (NOT an app)
You cannot order Scrip without setting up an account
You cannot pay for Scrip without completing your
PrestoPay registration.
Online order Deadlines (for plastic cards):
Feb 14, Mar 7*, Apr 4**, May 9, Jun 6
*last order to earn rebates before final Disney trip payment
**last chance to order Disney scrip cards before trip
“ScripNow” and reloads are available 24/7/365—keep
earning over the summer! Contact me with any questions.

Instrument Petting Zoo
Joshua Bell:
The Man with a Violin
Every year as part of their Family Concert series the National
Symphony Orchestra offers an "Instrument Petting Zoo". At these events, held at the Kennedy Center, children
can try out the many different instruments played in the orchestra. The Women's Committee of the NSO keeps a
closet full of old instruments just for this purpose. Students do not bring their own instruments.
Our band students volunteer to demonstrate the instruments for the children and help them try it if they
would like. Not only is it fun to see children try new things, but also as a reward, our students earn service hours
they can use to meet their Tri-M and other school requirements. They also usually get to attend a NSO concert
for free!
We meet at Lake Braddock at 10:30 to carpool for an 11:00 departure for the Kennedy Center. We need
parent drivers! The parents are welcome to stay for the zoo and concert, or drop students off and return. The
concert time is 2:00. It really is a delight to see children discover the gift of music.
The next IPZ will be February 12th—Joshua Bell: The Man with the Violin . Students should wear their
band polo and khakis. The last IPZ of the year will be on May 21st.
More information about the concerts can be found at www.kennedy-center.org For questions on how you
can volunteer, please contact [email protected] or sign up on the sign up genius page on the e-Comm.

Want the secret, hidden truth about volunteering for the Middle School Band Assessment?
Want to know what happens to the moms and dads who
bravely volunteer?
THEY HAVE A GOOD TIME!
It’s because the two chairs of the Assessment (Tracy Bays and Pru Bovee) are dedicated to
sass and chatter. We run a tight ship and if we could serve martinis during the assessment, we
totally would. (But we can’t. Sorry.) We know the volunteers are giving up their free time on a
precious Saturday, and we’re grateful… but we’re also pretty dedicated to mixing in
foolishness and grins and general, all-around niceness.
So if you’re generally disposed to gab and chat and greet strangers with a smile – then you’d
have a good time with us, and you should check your calendar now.
We need volunteers on Saturday, March 18. Tracy and Pru will be there ALL DAY (oy,
my feet!), but you can just come for a few hours. We need almost ONE HUNDRED
VOLUNTEERS. Some of them can be students, but a lot of the positions require adults who
can look like they’re not making snide comments even when they are. You know. You, in
other words.
People who volunteer tend to volunteer again the next year. That’s a pretty good sign,
don’t you think?
(If you don’t know what the Middle School Band Assessment is, ask your band student.
They’ll ‘splain).
Send us an email; tell us you want to play, too!
