From Sr Clare - “It’s good to celebrate!”

After all the celebration and excitement of last weekend, this week I simply feel gratitude. Gratitude for all the ups and downs, joys and blessings of the last fifty years in Religious life; and gratitude for the present - for being part of this wonderful, caring Community in Basildon.

Thank you so much for celebrating with me and for all your loving support, gifts and good wishes. Muchas Gracias (as they say in Barcelona!).

[The parish gift to Sr Clare is a 5 day holiday in Barcelona with Sr Anne. Many thanks to all who contributed].

From Fr Dominic – Christ is with us always

Today’s Feast is “The Triumph of the Cross.” The readings remind us that Jesus came to earth as one of us, lived and died as one of us, and conquered death so that we might live for ever. The cross, which looked like the end, becomes the sign and gateway of new and eternal life. Perhaps this resonates for us personally; we might be caught in a situation which seems hopeless, lifeless. Hold a crucifix in your hand. Offer what seems hopeless to a loving and life-giving God, and trust in him.

Birthday wishes – thank you. Fr Dominic writes, “Thank you for your kind birthday greetings, gifts and cards. It was a birthday full of variety – a picnic in the park, Irish and Bollywood dancing, and Indian drummers! And of course, even as the years roll on, I will always be five years younger than Fr Brett!”

Field of Dreams – Lloyds Bank Community Grant. A parishioner has nominated us for this, we are into the final shortlist, and you can vote for us online at www.lloydsbank.com/communityfund or text VOTE BXW to 61119. On the weekend of 27th/28th September there will be young people with laptops outside each Mass ready to help you to vote. This could make a massive difference to our project – the top voted project will receive £3,000 which will be a great boost for the equipment and opportunities we can provide. Anyone can vote for us – please spread the word!

Hall of Dreams – our brilliant youth club for those in school year 6-8 – restarts THIS Friday 19th September, 6pm-8pm. You need to fill in a form to be able to come – including those who have filled in forms in previous years, so we have current details. Forms are available at the back of each church.

………………………………….

Macmillan Coffee Morning – Friday 26th September – 9am to 12pm – Holy Trinity Hall. Can you bake or buy a cake for us or do you have a new item we could Raffle? Please call Diane on 554784 or Mary on 284825. Please come along and help raise funds for Macmillan Cancer charity. Entrance is £2 for a cup of tea or coffee and a cake. You can give a donation for more cakes if you wish. An enjoyable morning with refreshments and great Raffle prizes too.

Gardening & clearing – tidying up for the autumn! After a lovely summer of wildflowers and poppies around Holy Trinity, with the orchard trees also continuing to grow well, we have a vital need for a good number of people to come and help on SUNDAY OCTOBER 19th, 12noon – 4.30pm. We’ll provide tea, cake, sandwiches and good humour – you just need to turn up with a willing heart and a spare spade. We’ll clear the wildflower beds of weeds, prune and tidy, and leave things in good shape for the spring. PLEASE GET INVOLVED – the beauty of the gardens is due to the dedication of very few, and on this one day it would be good to support them, please.

Parish Theatre trip to Evita, Thursday 9th October. Very good seat and coach travel for £46. Evening performance. Book by calling Phyl, 07970 096319, email [email protected] If you have reserved a ticket, but not yet paid, payment is now due to secure your place.

Fr Dominic writes, “I will be away from 15th-27th September, attending the National Conference of Diocesan Vocations Directors. That is, the American NCDVD – in Long Island, New York. I have assured Fr Brett this is all work, work, work – but I can hear his comments now! Anyway, please warmly welcome Fr John, a friend of Fr Brett from the Diocese of Plymouth, who will supply for some of the Masses on the weekend of 20/21 September.”

Keeping Holy Trinity open during the day. At the moment, our churches are locked, due to unfortunate security problems in the past. People can always knock at the Sisters’ house by St Basil’s, or at the Parish House by Holy Trinity, and almost always there will be someone available to let you in for a time of quiet and prayer. But we know this is not the same as being able to “pop in.” So – starting slowly and hoping for this to grow – we will be opening Holy Trinity from 8am-8pm on the last Friday of every month, starting in October. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed, and we need three volunteers for each hour. The Syro-Malabar community have said they will cover 6 of the hours, so we need 18 volunteers, from 8am – 2pm. Can you do it?! Sign up list at the back of the church – give just an hour a month to prayer, and see where it goes from there …

………………………………….

Secondary School Forms. If your child is beginning Year 6, you will need to think about their Secondary School choice very soon, as the deadline for application is late October. For any Baptised Catholic applying to a Catholic school, you should have a supplementary form signed by the Priest. Fr Dominic will sign forms ONLY at the following times:

Wednesday 22nd October, St Basil’s, 3.00 – 4.30pm Wednesday 22nd October, Holy Trinity, 5.30 – 7.00pm

Please do not ask at other times, as there are over 90 forms to sign and it is impossible to sign them individually. Please bring your child’s Baptism certificate with you.

Please take the next few weeks to visit schools – we warmly and unreservedly commend De la Salle school to you, as the local Catholic secondary school. We also happily recommend Brentwood Ursuline, St Thomas More and St Bernard’s, though these schools do involve travel, with time and costs attached. To visit De la Salle please phone the school to make a time convenient to you, 01268 281234.

………………………………….

St Teresa’s – the making of the School Orchestra – the Channel 4 documentary called ‘Don’t stop the music’ concludes on TUESDAY 16th September, 9.00pm. This is a powerful piece of television, featuring pupils and staff at St Teresa’s and telling a heart-warming and wonderful story. Tune in and see!

Project 58:7. Thank you to everyone who has donated clothes for the homeless. Thanks to your generosity storage is full and no further items are needed at present.
