K-34-89-12

We harnessed the Power of QZABs to …

• Repair our facilities (New science labs, furniture for students and staff, phone systems, press box, bleachers, electrical, blinds, kitchen equipment, real white boards, projection systems complete with power to the units)

• Curriculum: all new textbooks and shared curriculum document• Technology: Mimio, flat screens, laptops for all staff, laptops for 4-12

grade, I pads for k-3, new computer lab for K-3 and high school center

-We negotiated a Dell smart lease• Seamless Wi-Fi• Full time tech person• Improved infrastructure• Google classroom• Microsoft full suite for all• Classroom phones district-wide• Surveillance equipment • And the list goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on

“What new things are we getting this year Dr.

Espinoza?”

-LHS Student

Conversations with our students• Surveying (2013) our students the number one

concern was ____________!• “Dr. Espinoza, this high school is wasting our time”

-high school student comment to me, August of 2013

• Students were shocked that I (we) greeted them and talked to them

• Students were shocked that I (we) valued their opinion

Positive growth is only possible if all the stakeholders in the venture understand that their voices matter in the journey.

In my 33 years in education what I have found is that conversations

segue positively when all necessary educational needs

(tools, environment) are satisfied for both the teachers and students

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Can you guess what those new conversations were (are)?

This is my second-year teaching at La Moille High School. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Trinity International University. I worked as a chemist for 7 years before going back to school. I received my Masters in Teaching from National Louis University. I taught for 9 years at Plano High School before moving to La Moille High school.

Carol Darveau

Carol DarveauI have been the Business/Computer Teacher at LaMoille High School since 1995. I received my Bachelor of Business Education from Illinois State University www.ilstu.edu and previously taught at Flanagan High School and Chenoa High School. My work experience includes being a legal secretary, a judge's secretary, a school secretary, and a school treasurer. My husband. my oldest daughter, and I live in Mendota. My oldest daughter, Alison, has cerebral palsy. My middle daughter, Angela, is an Animal Technician at University of Texas - Dallas in Dallas, Texas. She works with animals that are used for cancer research and nerve regeneration research. My youngest daughter, Andrea, is a Speech Pathologist at Champaign School District. She was married in July and lives in Monticello.I love teaching at LaMoille High School. It's exciting to see students as they show their creative side and learn to use computers in a new way.

Carol said to me:

What do think about Project Based Learning and STEM?

What is STEM Education?

STEM is the integration of Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics into a new

trans-disciplinary subject in schools

How do we pay for it?When Andy gets the letter and the check from the government he smiles and says “it only took 6 years” and one of the guards asks what’s he gonna do…“well, from now on, I’m gonna write 2 letters per week instead of one”. So he continues to write two letters every single week and a long period of time passes and eventually the government writes to him and says “Dear Mr. Dufresne we appreciate your persistence, enclosed is a check every single year we’re gonna send you a check for $500 and here’s some more books and things that can go towards the library”. -Shawshank Redemption

Why is STEM Education so Important?

A recent report of the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the number of jobs in STEM

occupations will grow by 47 percent, three times the rate of all

other occupations, by 2010.(American Association of State Colleges and

Universities, 2005)

Prepare you for tomorrow’s careers today

STEM can help with solving some of these problems.

“Your” educational system can be enhanced to appropriately function for a new world reality according to Thomas

Friedman in his frequently cited book, The World is Flat.

Shocking data:

Only four percent of American college graduates in 2003 majored in engineering compared to 13 percent of European students and 20 percent of those in Asia.

A wealth of natural resources, innovation, and hard work provided the mechanisms that transformed our nation during the 20th Century. National and international transformations during the 21st Century will be driven by those who want to invest in and advance comprehensive STEM educational programs (Daugherty, 2009)

We love that it is 100% aligned to our curriculum. The students are always engaged and it promotes higher order thinking skills. It is very hands on. The graphics and animations are enticing for the student and the number of questions per episode are not overwhelming.

http://www.pltw.uillinois.edu/Project Lead The Way is a nonprofit organization that provides a transformative learning experience for K-12 students and teachers across the U.S. PLTW creates an engaging environment and empowers students to develop in-demand knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in an evolving world. Through pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, K-12 students learn problem-solving strategies, critical and creative thinking, and how to communicate and collaborate. Students apply knowledge from a variety of disciplines as they engage in hands-on activities, projects, and problems reflective of real-world scenarios and careers. PLTW is shaping the innovators, creators, and designers of today and tomorrow. The University of Illinois and the Illinois State Board of Education collaborate with national Project Lead The Way and other educational, business/industry, and organizations to support efforts of Illinois PLTW schools.

Established in 2011, STEM Magnet Academy is the first Chicago Public Schools to offer Science, Technology, Engineering and Math as its educational foci. Located in the heart of Chicago's West Loop, Tri-Taylor, or Medical District (whichever you prefer) STEM services students in grades K-8, from every neighborhood in Chicago. As the founding principal of STEM Magnet Academy, I am proud of the amazing things our students, staff and parents have accomplished. Together we have worked diligently to build a positive, productive and pleasant environment that fosters student growth, promotes teacher leadership and encourages parental involvement. STEM's rigorous learning environment has proven to prepare its students for ongoing academic success. Our school's website was designed with you in mind! For your perusal, we have included information regarding the CPS Magnet School admissions process, STEM's academic programming, policies and procedures, parent volunteer opportunities and so much more.

Thank for visiting our website!
