forward to hearing about their adventures upon their return. The initial enrolment application date has now passed for high school and college and I encourage any of you with students commencing Year 11 or Year 7 to complete an online enrolment form as soon as possible if you have not already done so, to ensure that your child is enrolled for 2020. With the cold upon us I did want to take the opportunity to remind parents and students that layering is a great way to stay warm but that we do expect students to be in full school

uniform including a school jumper. Week 1 of term 3 will be a very busy week for our school community as we will participate in the School Review. The School Review is an opportunity for the school to reflect on where they currently are and how they have gone on their 5 year school plan journey. The Review process helps to create the new school Plan and targeted priorities for the school to work on to enurse the very best outcomes for our students. School Review involves people from the directorate and from ACER immersing themselves in the school for 3 days and providing

feedback along the way to the leadership team and staff. They will visit classrooms and chat with teachers, students and parents. I look forward to sharing their findings with you. There are a number of upcoming events and I look forward to reporting further successes of Canberra High School as the year progresses. Regards, Samara Chisholm

Over the course of several weeks, Year 7 SOSE students at Canberra High were able to present and watch many exclusive interviews with a variety of ancient historical figures. On a recent episode of ‘This is your Life’, host Maddie Steinacker received a fascinating insight into the life of the Egyptian Queen, Cleopatra (Zara Brown). During the episode that she led with Cleopatra, she learned a great deal about her life. She asked Cleopatra a series of questions regarding her personal life, the world she lived in, her significance, changes, and continuities. Here is some of the fascinating information that she learned about Cleopatra. Cleopatra was born into the Ptolemy Family where she was the second born child of Cleopatra V and Ptolemy XII Auletes. They were at the highest rank of the eight social classes. Her family consisted of ruthless and power

hungry Pharaohs and Queens. Cleopatra was an intelligent girl, being multilingual and the first in her family to learn Egyptian as well as having a passion for the arts. She was also devoted towards the throne, she would do anything for power, even if that meant killing off her family members! As queen, Cleopatra had a major influence on Egyptian and Roman politics. She forged many alliances with other countries and powerful Roman leaders. Her charm and smarts played a major role in her successes as Queen, including skillfully winning over the trust of powerful people to help gain more power for herself. She died a very dramatic death in 30 BCE at merely 30 years of age. Her death was a result of guilt as she had trusted an enemy, Octavian, sacrificing her husband Mark Antony. She realised that she had made a

mistake and that Octavian was going to take her and her three children to Rome to present them as trophies, in order to claim victory. Due to this, she allowed an asp to bite her, ending the reign of Cleopatra and the Ptolemy Dynasty. Many other exceptional hosts were featured in recent episodes of ‘This is Your Life’, interviewing many other Ancient figures from Ancient Rome, Egypt and Greece. Some of these fascinating historical figures were, Tutankhamen, Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, Spartacus and Hannibal. We thoroughly enjoyed this interesting unit and had an amazing experience meeting with some of the key historical figures from the Ancient Mediterranean era. Zara Brown and Maddie Steinacker

On the 31st of May, 60 students visited the National University Classics Museum and the National Film and Sound Archives. In the Classics Museum, there was a scale model of Ancient Rome, explaining their civilization and their hierarchy, There were some sculptures and ancient artifacts that explained what they used in Ancient Rome.

At the National Film and Sound Archives we really enjoyed the Aboriginal Virtual Reality Experience because it gave us a view of Aboriginal culture. We had the opportunity in the National Film and Sound Archives to experience a 360° video and to see what music and culture might have been like back then. The teachers who accompanied us were Miss Mees, Mr Laenen and

Mr Adamopoulos. We enjoyed this opportunity because it felt like we went back in time to ancient Rome and were shown the Roman civilization. Thank you to the teachers for this experience. Daisy Beach, Aurelia Guenther-Evans, Jade Tong, Paige Aldridge

SOSE Teachers Spend a Night at the Museum

Four of Canberra High School’s History and humanities teachers recently spent time at the National Museum. They were given a guided tour of the museum and the facilities available for students and future excursions. Not only was this an opportunity for professional development, but an opportunity to see first hand the hands-on activities available to students from all over Australia. National Museum guides pointed out that the museum was fundamentally a social history of early Australiana and

the artefacts contained in the museum were ‘living’ evidence of Australia’s history. The photo shows Ms Writer and Ms Tooth with ‘hands-on’ artefacts in the special primary and secondary sources facility within the National Museum. While Ms Writer and Ms Tooth were concentrating on some primary sources, Ms Campbell and Mr Adamopoulos were seeking out potential excursion opportunities for students. A good evening was had by all.

News from Band

It has been an exceptionally busy term in Band so far, culminating in our Yr 8, Senior and Jazz Bands performing at the Eisteddfod in the first week of June. Our Jazz band was first to play, and they performed exceptionally well at the Lyneham High Performing Arts Centre. The band is a mix of students from across all year levels who give up lunch times twice a week to rehearse. They played three contrasting pieces with focus and energy and, in spite of their limited rehearsal time as an extra curricular band, were awarded a Gold trophy. The students were completely chuffed. On Sunday, the Year 8 Band and

Senior Concert Band performed at Llewellyn Hall at the School of Music. For our Year 8’s, it was their first taste of playing at this type of event at such a prestigious location, and they performed admirably. They received a Silver trophy and gained a lot from the experience. Finally our Senior Band, their ranks swollen with up and coming students from the Yr7 and 8 programs, performed magnificently in the Afternoon session, picking up a Gold trophy. Their performance of Mission Apollo was exceptional and represents just what the band is able to achieve with focus and dedication.

Holly and I are deeply proud of all bands achievements, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing them enjoy the experience, particularly post performance, where the sense of achievement was so palpable. The future is very bright for the band program at CHS with students as dedicated, focused and enthusiastic as these. Important dates coming up include: • Winter Concert 7th August • Band Festival 10th-13th

September • Arts & Technology Showcase

Languages China Trip Mr Chen is working very hard meeting the rigorous requirements needed to organise our trip to China. We really appreciate the support of parents and students in meeting the deadlines to return paperwork and make payments. Don’t forget you will need a passport photo for your visa application. French Year 8 French Excursion to Sydney: Notes went out for our Excursion the end of Term 2. Places were limited but we now have approximately 55 students intending to complete the trip. They will take part in a tour of the La Perouse Museum to explore the history of the French expeditions to Australia, visit the Powerhouse Museum to view the Strasbourg Clock, and enjoy a fabulous 3 course lunch at a French specialty restaurant in Darling Harbour. Many thanks to Mr Moisescu and Ms Giannini for their organisation. Mandarin Year 8 Mandarin Excursion to Sydney: Students had the opportunity to visit a Buddhist

temple, the China Culture Centre, the Chinese Gardens in Darling Harbour, Yum Cha in China Town, and Paddy’s Market. The students all enjoyed the trip. Many thanks to Ms Zheng and Mr Chen for all their hard work and organisation. Arts Music The Year 8 Band and the Senior Band participated in the National Eisteddfod, held at the ANU School of Music on Sunday 2 June. The Eisteddfod provided an excellent performance goal and allowed students to perform for their families in a larger and well-renowned venue. The Senior Band also travelled to Sydney on Tuesday 25 June to take part in the Sydney Eisteddfod, allowing them to perform in a much larger event with many schools from all over NSW and ACT in attendance. The Canberra High School Jazz Band also took part in the National Eisteddfod. Their event was held on Thursday 30 May at Lyneham High School Performing Arts Centre. Congratulations to all band students

Careers News

On Wednesday Week 8 we were lucky to have Lisa McLeod, a paramedic, come in on her day off to speak to interested students about her job with the ACT Ambulance Service. Lisa spoke about how she had re-trained in paramedicine after a career as a nurse, the educational and personal requirements for becoming a paramedic and her day-to-day work.

It was so interesting to hear about the requirements of such a demanding job and the rewarding nature of it. Our next Careers Talk will be from fire officers on Wednesday Week 2 next term. I would encourage students from all years to come to these Careers Talks to gain an idea of different jobs, the various ways people

end up in their current roles and a way to learn about industries that they will not be able to do work experience in when they are in Year 10. It is also a very pleasant way to spend a cold lunchtime!

During Semester One student taking Legal Studies as their chosen SOSE elective were provided with an opportunity to present a case to their student cohort about an issue which they felt would be important to society for law reform. All students chose current issues which were either topical, controversial or difficult for society and governments to facilitate new laws. Students compiled and presented PowerPoint presentations outlining their recommendations for reform of relevant state or federal acts of parliament. Issues included changes to environmental law, euthanasia, capital punishment and appropriate penalties for crimes as well as domestic violence and human trafficking. Isabelle Reed (pictured) felt strongly about the impending establishment of the Adani mine in Queensland and presented her case for reforming the law to prevent the proposed mine from going ahead and/or ensuring that the impacts of the mine are minimised. Isabelle's topic, like other issues presented, was complex and Isabelle was able to examine how state and federal laws interact to facilitate

society’s expectations. During her presentation, Isabelle touched on the important issue of protection of the Great Barrier Reef and the complex nature of law reform which can be used to protect the environment and facilitate commercial industrial processes in a mutually beneficial way. Isabelle was able to put forward realistic changes to state and federal laws to achieve this in a meaningful way. Hi, I’m Isabelle. For my legal studies assignment, I chose to research and present the effects that coal mines have on our environment and more specifically, the new Adani coal mine in Queensland. I gained lots of information on what the government is doing in order to protect the Great Barrier Reef and what can be done to further protect it. I felt very passionate about this topic as it concerns my generation and the problems we will have to deal with in the near future. I found it a very interesting topic to research and I learnt a lot from the experience. Students in the legal studies elective this semester should be congratulated

on their efforts in identifying societal expectations and how these impact on the reform of laws in Australia. Spiro Admaopoulos

Everest Ride for Ryan

In February this year, one of our students from Canberra High School and JLP Mountain Biking member, Ryan Fawke had a cycling accident causing him to be airlifted to Sydney with several fractures and a severe brain injury. Upon hearing about this, JLP teachers and students got busy and put together a fundraiser to help Ryan and his family through this difficult time. The fundraiser took place on Saturday May 4th and consisted of two parts: part one, over 50 JLP members and past members made up of students, teachers and parents rode laps of Mt Stromlo on Mountain Bikes attempting to complete as many laps as possible. The goal was to ride the elevation of 2 Mount Everests, an altitude of more the 17 600 metres. The second part was Mr Crispin riding laps up and down Black Mountain to achieve a solo attempt of the altitude

of Mount Everest, which meant doing 39 laps of Black Mountain. The day was a big success with the JLP Club doing 173 laps of Mt Stromlo, or 4.3 Mount Everests or over 38 000 metres in elevation and Mr Crispin successfully doing a solo Mt Everest challenge. In total, our school rode a total distance of about 1860km on the day or half way to Perth. Everybody had a lot fun on the day. Some of the Year 7s pushed through and did 5,6 or even 7 laps up and down Mt Stromlo. The person who did the most laps was Ryan Smith’s dad doing 10 laps. Past JLP member, Corey Smith, who now represents Australia in Mountain Biking was definitely the fastest on the course. We only had 2 minor stacks throughout the day, so that was good. Mr Crispin started his solo attempt at 5am and finished at 6:30 at night.

Well done, Mr Crispin. Thank you to everyone for your support in giving to the fundraiser. At our school assembly, we were able to present the Fawke family with a cheque for $7,400. Ryan has been making incredible progress, doing a lot better in his rehab work than any of the doctors expected, and as a result is returning to school much sooner than projected. We are glad to have you back Ryan and wish you a speedy remaining recovery time. Thank you to all the parents and teachers who helped on the day in so many ways, as well as to teachers who put time into organising the event to ensure it went smoothly. Richard Erlandson

STEM Club

As some of you may know, Canberra High School has a STEM club which runs every Thursday during lunch. Currently, Paul Kinsella and Tim Hartgers have put together some special projects for students. Paul is also coding/programming robotics and the F1 in Schools project.

Many students may in the future find themselves in career paths which actually don't currently exist today. Just a few years ago Android/iOS app

development jobs did not exist. Last year, 20 million app developers were registered in the Apple store (iOS developers), collectively making $100 billion in revenue. It is predicted that in 2021, 352.9 billion apps will be downloaded world wide!

Below are some images of a 3D printing project completed at CHS. A Paralympian needed to make some adjustments to their running leg. Traditional manufacturing methods

would make this a very expensive exercise to test various sizes and angles. With Computer Aided Design (second image) and 3D Printing, we were able to take some simple sketches and print a test 'wedge' for the athlete, before they then had the final product manufactured in titanium (final image).

Year 10 students have been attending various workplaces for their work experience placements this year. Some examples have been hairdressing, retail opportunities, interior design, car detailing defence force, cafes, childcare centres, joinery, and the Canberra Hospital. Except for the excursion free weeks, each week sees students out in a work place somewhere learning about the world of work. We really appreciate all the employers who host our students and put together programs and activities that allow them to join in as much as they are able. These are opportunities for our students to learn in different settings and they could not do this without the support of employers. If your workplace could host a student even for one day, I would appreciate you letting me know so that I could expand my

list of workplace providers. Please contact me on 6142 0813 or email me at [email protected]. On that note, many occupations do not offer work experience and especially not to Year 10 students and this was the reason the Lunchtime Careers Talks Series started last year. Last year we hosted a psychologist, police officers, a politician and a journalist to talk about their career. This year I have invited ambulance officers, fire officers and a lawyer to come and speak to interested students from all year groups. These talks are always at lunchtime in the Library and I will advertise them through the Daily Notices in ACE in the mornings. Vocational Learning Options (VLO) are

short career education and vocational learning programs that aim to strengthen

students’ engagement with their learning and career planning. They are

delivered by trained industry experts in authentic learning or work

environments. They typically consist of 8-15 sessions delivered one day a week

over a semester. They also allow students to gain competencies toward CIT qualifications. The current list of

VLOs on offer for next semester are as follows: Café and Reception,

Hairdressing and Social Media, Design Thinking, Mechanical Engineering and

Plumbing. I have had a meeting with interested students on Tuesday June 4

but enquiries are always welcome and there may still be places left.

SOSE War Memorial Excursion

Term 2 , I ssue 4 Page 17

On a cold and wet Friday in Week 2, forty five Year 9 SOSE students visited the Australian War Memorial. We were accompanied by Mr Laenen, Mr Crowe and Ms Writer. The start wasn't too positive as the bus was late, but it turned up without affecting our timeframe too badly. First, we had our morning tea outside the War Memorial. Then we walked down Anzac Parade and looked at some of the memorial sculptures and the meaning behind them and why they were on Anzac Parade. Once we ran out of time we walked back up to the War Memorial and entered through the education entrance. We had a quick briefing and watched a short film, then split into our classes than all went on separate tours. Our guide talked to us about the Roll of Honour, which records all the casualties from every war since the 1899 Boer War. We then spent a few moments in the Hall of Memory, which houses the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After that we went and looked at all of the World War One displays which included the realistic dioramas which is a 3D model of selected battles from the 1914-1918 conflict. At the end of that we all joined back together and watched two films about World War Two. Sadly we ran out of time and had to go back to school. Overall it was a great excursion and it made that cold wet day into a fun day. Connor Ferdinand Year,9 On Friday the 10th of May, the classes of Year 9 SOSE went on an excursion to the Australian War Memorial as apart of our History unit, ‘Movements in Modern History’. The day was filled with activities and interactive programs to help us gain further knowledge on the subject of World War l and Gallipoli.

First off, we walked down ANZAC Parade. ANZAC Parade is a street with many memorial sculptures and other mementos, like the Navy Memorial, the Kemal Atatürk Memorial and the Service Nurse Memorial. After visiting those monuments, we then made our way back up the the War Memorial where we were split off into different groups to visit different areas of the building. Our group first visited the Roll of Honour. It is a series of bronze panels that includes the names of the 102,000 soldiers who have died while serving our country. While we were there, we learned about the commemoration and the importance of remembering the fallen members who were a part of the Australian armed forces.

We also visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which also has a Four pillar sculpture in the room. The roof is a dome shape, which represents souls of the dead ascending to heaven. The coffin contains the body of an unknown Australian soldier that was killed in the war of 1914-1918, and was moved to the tomb to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the first World War in 1993. The soldier was recovered from Adelaide Cemetery in France and he was also buried in the coffin with soil from the Pozières battlefield in France. After that, we went inside the main building to look at different collections. There were diagrams and artifacts along with interactive programs and discussion to help engage us to further our knowledge. There was also an exhibition in the Aircraft Hall, where we learned about the experiences, stories and what it was like to be a part of the Air Force during war.

Overall, the excursion was a great and a valuable learning experience. I truly believe that it helped further my knowledge and understanding of the impact Australia had during times of war an how it helped form our society today Abby Scarvell

Accident Insurance Cover for Students—important information for parents Insurance and Ambulance Transport The ACT Education and Training Directorate does not provide any insurance cover for injury, disease or illness to students resulting from school activities or school-organised excursions. Claims for compensation are met where there is a legal liability to do so. Liability is not automatic and depends on the circumstances in which any injury, disease or illness was sustained.

As there is no automatic insurance cover for personal injury if your child is injured at school or during a school organised activity/excursion you should therefore consider whether taking out personal insurance cover for your child is warranted. This insurance might cover contingencies including medical/hospital expenses, ambulance transport outside the ACT, and cancellation of transport/accommodation or loss of/damage to luggage.

The ACT Ambulance Service provides free ambulance transport for students who are injured or suddenly become ill at school or during an approved school organised activity within the ACT.

ACT Regional Maths, Science and IT Challenge

Cody Sturgiss nominated to take part in King of the Ring held at PCYC Hornsby, its one of the biggest NSW amateur boxing tournaments. Cody having never contested in a real competition fight went up against 2 very good young fighters. Cody won a fight on Saturday with a unani-mous decision. On Sunday Cody fought extremely well against a fighter who was extremely good. After 3 tough rounds the photo says it all, it was almost unbe-lievable that a young man who took up boxing 18 months ago achieved this goal. Cody will now look to fight at the PCYC in Tuggeranong and is aiming to get a chance to compete at the Australian titles later this year.

Year 9 Outdoor Pursuits

Term 2 , I ssue 4 Page 19

In Week 2, the Year Nine Outdoor Pursuits classes were fortunate enough to travel to Bungonia National Park to complete a bushwalking camp. We all arrived at Bungonia at about 10:30 and began our bush walk down the red track and into the gorge. We had the challenge of conquering steep hills, climbing over large boulders, navigating across rivers and shuffling along rock faces to get to our

campsite. By this time we were all looking forward to dinner and bed. Some students decided to brave the freezing waters of the Shoalhaven river for a nice dip and refreshment. The second day we woke up, had breakfast and packed up our tents and packs. We then departed from the campsite and clambered along the river and up some steep mountain terrain. After the climb back out of the

gorge we were all exhausted and ready for the bus ride home. The camp taught us patience and teamwork. We are very grateful to Mr Beasley, Mrs Smith, Macca & Finn, Mrs Chisholm and anyone else who made the camp possible! By Valentina, Nektaria & Tara.
