Miss Ashton, Ms Munns and Mrs Goldsworthy are preparing to recruit new instrumental music students for 2020. Students who are entering Year 3 may be selected to learn a string instrument and students who are entering year 4 may be selected to learn a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. There are a limited number of places available. If you are interested in learning to play an instrument in 2020, start thinking about what instrument you might like to learn and how you will schedule a regular practice routine into other family activities. Redcliffe High School instrumental music students will be performing for Scarborough students in the hall on Tuesday 25 June. This event can inspire our younger students to dream of where they might be a few years down the track. Lessons and rehearsals for Strings and Band are on:

Ø Term 2 - Week 10 Ø Term 3 - Week 1

Remember to bring your instrument.

Library News – Julie Peasey READING NEWS

For the next few weeks and over the winter holidays, there will be a Winter Reading Club for students to participate in. Students in Years 3-6 (and some Year 2 students who are working with Literacy Pro), can read Lexiled books and complete quizzes on Literacy Pro to build their ‘words read’ tally. Students in Prep to Year 2 will have a reading log to complete. There will be book prizes for students who have the highest tallies in each year level. Remember… “The more you read, the smarter you get,” says Dr Suess.

We encourage all students in Year 3-6, and some Year 2 students, to choose books from the school library that are within their Lexile range, as per their testing online with Scholastic Learning Zone/Literacy Pro. Literacy Pro helps find the fit between children and reading success by:

• Letting kids choose books they really want to read • Helping them to find a ‘good fit’ book • Creating excitement and celebrating goals in independent reading.

When students have finished reading their school library books, or books from home or public libraries, then we encourage them to go online to complete a quick 10-question quiz to check comprehension of the book. If students pass their quiz (7/10 or above), then this score and ‘words read’ are credited to their account. Teachers monitor their students’ accounts to check progress. This independent reading program also forms part of each students’ homework. Accessing Scholastic Learning Zone from home or mobile devices with internet access. Go to school website (Google: Scarborough State School) https://scarboroughss.eq.edu.au/Pages/default.aspx Scroll down to Quicklinks on right-hand side and open Scholastic Learning Zone.
