Don't think of organ donation as giving up part of yourself to keep a total stranger alive. It's really a total stranger giving up almost all of themselves to keep part of you alive.Author unknown

Myth:If I agree to donate my organs, the hospital staff won't work as hard to save my life.Fact:Absolutely false. You'll be seen by people with a moral and legal obligation to save your life. They are not part of the transplant team.
Urban Myths
2011 www.OrganTI.org
Myth: Fact:No they cant. In brain death there is no brain or brain stem activity none! Recovery is impossible.
Patients in coma or vegetative state have some brain stem functions. Recovery is rare but happens.
People can wake up from brain death.
Urban Myths
2011 www.OrganTI.org
Minorities should refuse donation. Organs may not go to minority patients. Myth: Wrong again! Example -- African Americans are 12% of population &12% of kidney donors. They get about 21% of donated kidneys.
Fact:
Urban Myths
2011 www.OrganTI.org
Myth: traveler has drinks with a stranger. Wakes up in a bathtub of ice, staples in his back & no kidneys. Fact: never happened. Chances are he might not wake up.Incision would be on side not back. Illegal, Unprofitable, impractical. Kidneys would likely die before transplant.

90% of adult Americans approve of organ donation -- but 50 % of them are NOT organ donors.
Why the Organ Shortage?
2011 www.OrganTI.org
You Can Donate in Two Ways
Why the Organ Shortage?
As a Living Donor you can give:A kidneyPart of a liverPart of a lung As a deceased donor your organs and tissues can: Save or positively affect the lives of up to 60 people.
2011 www.OrganTI.org
Under current U.S. law you are not an organ donor unless you sign up or Opt In.
Despite 25 years of incredible effort the demand for organs is far greater than the supply.
Being a Donor in the U.S.
2011 www.OrganTI.org
Proponents claim PC will increase number of organs. In some countries it has.
Under PC it is presumed everyone wants to be a donor. Those who opt out would carry not a donor cards.
Presumed Consent an Option
2011 www.OrganTI.org
It is illegal to buy or sell human organs.
Some suggest donors get highly regulated benefits like tax credits, contributions to retirement plans or early access to Medicare.
Cash payments or selling organs is ethically questionable.
Financial Incentives an Option

Mechanical Organ ReplacementsArtificial hearts are being used & constantly improved now.
Implantable artificial kidney is designed and being developed.
Bio-lung under development.
Work underway on artificial liver.
A Promising Future
2011 www.OrganTI.org
Duplicates body parts - not entire body. Could nearly eliminate organ shortage.Would make anti-rejection meds unnecessary.Experimental - mixed results. Expensive.
Therapeutic Cloning
2011 www.OrganTI.org
Other Potential BenefitsCancer Cure if we learn how to turn cells on and off. Spinal Cord -- regrow nerves or entire spinal cord when they are injured.
Leukemia Cloning bone marrow could be one of first benefits.
Therapeutic Cloning
2011 www.OrganTI.org
Body can already regenerate some parts like liver.Stem cells can repair or replace skin, hearts, lungs, livers, kidneys & more. Already done with animals.
Organ Regeneration
2011 www.OrganTI.org
If we didnt systematically destroy our own organs there would be no organ shortage.
Paralyzing Paradigms
2011 www.OrganTI.org
Human nature seems to dictate that we almost always prefer to treat symptoms rather than take the time and make the effort to eliminate the cause.

If each adult American convinced one person a year to become an organ donor, the supply/demand gap would narrow considerably
