Our YMCA summer camp staff are made up of a cultural mixture of young, mature adults that are interested in a future of working with youth. Our staff are great role models, listeners, friends, and are confident working with youth. The YMCA’s summer camp programs are directed by a full-time YMCA professional director and staffed with dedicated and dynamic leaders. These leaders are selected for their experience, maturity, understanding, and patience. The selection process includes a panel interview, reference checks, and a background check prior to employment. Summer camp staff must complete extensive training that includes: risk management, child discipline, child abuse prevention, emergency procedures, friendship building, and how to lead activities before campers arrive. We always have certified lifeguards on duty during all swimming activities and staff are certified in CPR and First Aid.

From the Camp Directors Dear Families, Planning and preparation for summer camp begins long before summer ever arrives. These uncertain times have resulted as our world responds to the COVID-19 crisis and planning for all of the possible changes feels impossible. What is possible is for us to keep our commitment to creating exciting and engaging camp programs for all children. We are moving forward with a summer camp plan that includes day camp, resident camp, and the variety of overnight camps that you have come to expect from YMCA Camp Somewhere. We are more excited than ever to help youth get outside but this year we think youth need to get back to “normal” more than ever before. Camp will still provide positive connections with peers, meaningful relationships with young adult role models, skill building, and a sense of adventure. Although we will be offering a full camp line up we realize we still need to have a flexible approach as it is possible that the need to cancel, suspend, or delay some camps may be inevitable this year. With that in mind we have decided to begin the day camp program on June 15 as this allows our first camp program to begin after all schools have released students from virtual learning. If the need to suspend day camp becomes reality we will begin day camp as soon as possible after the June 15 date. Our Y will be offering other full day child care programs until June 12 for K-6th grade students. We have scheduled resident camp and overnight camps but if the direction from health officials keeps these camps closed we will cancel them as making them up is hard as we require reservations and permits to operate these camps that are not always available on short notice. To allow for more flexibility, we will be changing the registration process to reduce the upfront cost. To register for any of the camp programs, there will be a $50 deposit which will be applied towards the balance of the first camp you attend. Payment for day camp will still take place after each week. Resident and overnight camps will be due on the Wednesday two weeks before the camp is scheduled. We hope this reduction in the upfront fee will help families during this time to start planning for a “normal” summer for your children. Sincerely, Gary “Flame” Taylor Collin “Cobra” Doughty Associate Executive Director Camp & Sports Coordinator [email protected] [email protected]

Day Camp Our day camp provides a safe, nurturing, and fun environment to engage the interests of all age groups. Our day camp is non-stop and our activities reinforce our core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. At the YMCA, we create an exciting and safe environment for kids to have an unforgettable summer of fun. They will spend the summer making friends, trying new things, and developing interpersonal skills. The activities that we engage campers in are hands-on and educational, but we add in a ton of fun and silliness. Each week will offer new and exciting adventures that will allow campers to explore their creativity, teamwork, and build on their leadership skills. Campers will come home each day excited to share what they have done. The schedule will be emailed and posted to the YMCA website each Friday before the start of the upcoming week.

A Week of Day Camp Includes: -Low camper to counselor ratio for individualized attention -Developmentally appropriate thematic activities, such as cooking projects, science experiments,

outdoor living skills, arts & crafts, and more -Field trips and special guests -Swim days at the YMCA facility -Traditional camp games, sports, skits and songs -Two healthy snacks per day and lunch provided by the USDA Summer Foods Program

We work to spend the majority of time outside and weekly fieldtrips will be to outdoor locations, wildfire smoke permitting. Each day campers will be assigned a “cabin” with their own counselor to guide them through the daily themed activities. Our unique program allows campers to work with their fellow cabin mates and camp counselor to design and shape their day. To make sure that your camper is properly prepared for each day, they should come dressed for the weather, ready to get dirty, and with a backpack filled with the YMCA’s Required 5: Lunch, Water Bottle, Sunscreen, Swimsuit, and Towel. We work with Sodexo and the USDA Summer Foods Program to provide free lunches as an option for families, available for any income level.

Scholarships are available for all

YMCA camp programs.

Thanks to the generous support of Lithia Motors, we have a greater level of scholarships available for those in need. If you could use assistance this year

please ask.

COUNSELOR IN TRAINING (C.I.T.)

We are proud to offer the C.I.T. program for youth that want to be camp staff beginning in 2021. It is exciting to see all of the campers that choose to move on as staff for our camps. Many of our best staff at Y-Camp were the former campers in our programs. Our C.I.T. program takes 15 year olds (by June 1, 2020) and gets them ready to step-up into the counselor role during the summer of 2021. The program begins with a 3 day overnight training June 16-18. All C.I.T.s must attend the three day training to be part of the program. The last day of training includes an all-day rafting trip down the Rogue River. Campers must speak with the Camp Coordinator before applying for this program. C.I.T.s must commit to spending at least 5 weeks at Day Camp. To learn more please contact:

LEADER IN TRAINING (L.I.T.)

The L.I.T. program is for our oldest Eagle campers (entering 8th &

9th grade) that may be interested in working with youth in the

future. This program is only offered to campers after talking with

the Camp Coordinator. Being a leader is not for everyone. This pro-

gram provides direct supervision to the L.I.T by placing them with a

senior counselor. They will then be placed with an Osprey group at

Day Camp where they will have the opportunity to help guide the

younger campers.

and YMCA lifeguards oversee the entire trip.

CHEF CAMP

Nothing tastes better than preparing and eating a hot fresh meal while in

the great outdoors. Campers will learn to prepare meals on stoves and

over an open fire. They will receive hands-on experience preparing and

cooking a full meal. Safety will be top priority as campers will work with a

variety of cooking equipment including propane stoves, open fires, and kitchen knives. On the first day we

start by planning out our menu and then we leave for the grocery store where campers will be selecting and

purchasing the food. We will be staying at Willow Lake, and when we are not cooking our meals, we will be

swimming, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors. Parents are invited to join us on the last day at the YMCA at

5:00 p.m. to share a meal prepared by the campers. Participants will need to provide personal camping gear

RESIDENT CAMP

The resident camp program this summer will take place at

Beaver Sulphur Creek Group Campground near the

Applegate River. This camp is filled with swimming, hiking,

archery, arts & crafts, cookouts, skits, songs, team building,

outdoor living skills, and all of the time honored traditions

campers expect. We offer a “Choose & Do” time during the

week so that campers can spend more time doing what they

love in the outdoors. At resident camp youth learn

independence, teamwork, and life skills. They will also meet

other youth that will become longtime friends. Resident

camp is an experience in life you never forget.

Evenings at camp will conclude with a camp fire, songs, storytelling, and skits from the counselors and

campers. The final day of camp is always special. Campers and counselors will dress in their camping best to

attend a semi-formal banquet to commemorate the fun they’ve had, and people they’ve had it with.

Campers will live in tents with their fellow campers with bathroom facilities nearby. Campers are asked to eat

ROCK CLIMBING CAMP Rock climbing is something all kids should get to experience. Our rock climbing staff are skilled and love

working with youth. They will teach your climber how to safely climb as high as 60 feet, learn to boulder,

learn to rappel, and even how to walk on a slackline. Rock climbing is a great skill to learn as it is an activity

you can do for many years while staying active and healthy. Campers will come home with the knowledge of

how to safely perform all the aspects of climbing, and they will have the skills to enjoy it for years to come.

We will be staying at Emigrant Lake Oak Slope Campground and climb each day at the rock formations near

the Emigrant Lake Dam. All climbing gear, group camping equipment, and food will be provided by the YMCA.

We do ask that you bring a lunch on the first day.
