Tim participating in the horticulture program in Burnie
From the CEO
I would like to commence this newsletter by congratulating the very talented artists whose work is on display at the Makers’ Workshop in Burnie. The works are truly inspiring and as someone whose arts skills did not develop beyond stick people, I really appreciate and admire the imagination, effort and sheer volume of work that has gone into to making these artworks. A very big congratulations and thank you to Valda Marshall for ‘leading the charge’ to get this wonderful exhibition in place, and for her ongoing work with our talented artists.
Our art program is an example of the types of programs that we wish to build and grow into the future, to provide real opportunities for our clients to learn and develop new skills, to gain opportunities to engage in real world activities and pursue their goals. We are in the process of rolling out some changes in our Community Access offerings to allow us to tailor our services for the very diverse needs of our clients. Our intention is to work with clients and their families to develop a meaningful program based on their goals and aspirations, and which may take them to one or more bases during the week to undertake specific activities. Further information will be made available shortly.

Our intention is to make the central area of Panorama as a dedicated centre for our higher needs clients, where there will be a greater focus on Wellbeing, Personal Care, Supports, with programs designed specifically to address individual needs and aspirations
02 september 2019 newsletter
Miranbeena will become a centre for learning and community engagement activities, and will be a base for music, art, information technology, dance, drama, starting point for community engagement and social participation activities
Westwood/Horizon will become a centre for practical, outdoor based learning activities and will showcase our new Small Engine Services program (where clients will be able to work in a practical way assisting with the building and operation of a variety of small engine programs, including motorised go karts), our developing Horticulture and Gardening maintenance program, as well as our Catering/Cooking program which will be based out of our Westwood building.
We are currently working to have these new program and centres operational during the later part of October, and we welcome any input or concerns with these changes. Should you wish to provide any feedback, please don’t hesitate to contact me via email [email protected]

I also delighted to announce our new future for the Panorama building. On Monday 26th August this year we moved the last of our permanent residents of Panorama into their new homes. It has been a long stated requirement from the National Disability Insurance Scheme has been the removal of ‘institutional’ living arrangements. Multicap Tasmania was one of 5 providers in the state to have institutional arrangements still in place, and these services have been provided at Panorama. I am pleased to advise that Multicap Tasmania is the first of the 5 providers to have achieved the objective of transitioning our institutional residents into contemporary housing.
The central section of Panorama will be the home for Community Access services during the day, and either end potentially will be developed for respite services. There is significant capacity to utilise the building for a variety of purposes and we welcome the opportunity to, particularly, finally have a home for our Burnie based respite services.
I am also thrilled that we have been able to introduce new properties into our portfolio, and these new sites with 2 properties at Emily Crescent (Somerset), and new properties at View Road (Burnie), Billett Court (Burnie), North Fenton Street (Devonport) as well as making use of our existing properties at Ritchie Avenue and the Hodge Avenue units.
The movement to these new properties from Panorama should provide a more personalised living environment for all our previous Panorama residents, with great opportunities to provide a greater level of supports and more opportunity to engage in the community. We are looking forward working to with families and residents in making sure we maximise the new opportunities these living arrangement create.
July 1 also saw the introduction of the National Quality and Safeguards Commission as the body that oversees the service quality and safety of our services. We are currently in the process of rolling out a new and comprehensive suite of policies and procedures that will replace our current policies. There is a much higher expectation from the Commission around how we work with families to deliver services, and we welcome feedback from everyone on how we can improve what we do. We are very open to the changes we need to make to remain relevant in an increasingly client driven environment.
04 september 2019 newsletter
We will need to make changes to a range of things we do. We are currently finalising our Client Handbook, and this handbook will contain key information for each of our clients around some of these changes, such as our new Complaints procedures.
We will be conducting a Client Satisfaction Survey in November. This is our formal ‘annual’ way that you can provide information to us but we welcome input at all times. This most easily can be achieved via our email address [email protected]. We are very happy to hear both what we are doing well, as well as what we can improve.

The Multicap Dancers from the Venue of Creativity (VOC) performed with massive smiles and undeniable passion at the 52nd Burnie City Eisteddfod in the Open Non Competitive Section Group. The Multicap Dancers opened the evening of the eisteddfod followed by individual performances by Chelsea and Emily.
Jodie Davis, the adjudicator for the evening congratulated everyone on a fantastic performance and presented each dancer with a ribbon and the soloists with a certificate each for their performances.
Chelsea and Emily braved the bright lights and attentive audience to perform on the stage all on their own. The audience was all smiles through all three dances and we’re all so proud of the performers.
Thank you to Helen Craige, who leads the group each year, making it a fun experience for everyone.

What a great dance this was that was clearly well prepared and so entertaining. I really loved your costumes as they looked really smart on stage. This really was a wonderful way to represent your unity as a dance troupe. Really strong choreography and so entertaining and fun. Thank you so much for preparing this and bringing it to the Eisteddfod. I really enjoyed it. Jodie Davis Adjudicator

Multicap Tasmania recently opened a new Community Access facility at 31 Tamar Street in Launceston. This centre replaced the previous hub at 1 Blaydon Street in Kings Meadows. His Worship The Mayor of Launceston Albert van Zetten launched the new facility at an event on Wednesday, 31 July 2019.
The guest list included Multicap Tasmania Board members, staff, clients and their family supports, elected alderman within the City of Launceston, as well as a number of key stakeholders in the disability sector, including the NDIS and Baptcare – the Local Area Coordination partner of the NDIS.
Multicap Tasmania is making a serious commitment to Launceston. In addition to providing a fresh and engaging space for clients and staff, the Community Access facility in Tamar Street is the base for key new roles in the organisation. Greg Boon joined Multicap Tasmania in May as Executive Manager, People Culture and Capability and will be shortly joined by a Launceston Regional Manager and administration staff in the space. These roles have been created to significantly increase the quality support provided to staff and clients in the region.

12 september 2019 newsletter
Since the late 1980s Multicap Tasmania has operated two group homes in the Launceston suburb of Summerhill and a small community access facility in a nearby property.
With the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme in Tasmania, Multicap Tasmania moved its day service location to 1 Blaydon Street, Kings Meadows and has operated from that site for the last few years. With continued growth in the Launceston area, Multicap Tasmania has outgrown the previous property in Kings Meadows.
In early 2018 the search commenced for a new site that would enable Multicap Tasmania to service their existing and future client base in the Launceston area. After an exhaustive search, Multicap Tasmania settled on the property at 31 Tamar Street. The site has previously been used as a motorcycle dealership. This new site of 320m2 has been transformed through works that provide support services and social activities for persons with disabilities.
The project was managed by 6tyo on behalf of Multicap Tasmania. 6tyo managed the architectural drawing, development application and engagement and management of the builders.
RMB Construction was appointed as the builder, undertaking tasks and managing sub contractors during the building process.
The project was completed in May 2019 and Multicap Tasmania have been using the site since that date.
Multicap Tasmania is dedicated to providing high quality care and support to clients with disability, allowing them to live the life they wish, maximizing their full potential and enhancing their quality of life. The new hub and key roles based in the space further drive this dedication within the Launceston region.

The Easy P’s Learner Driver Mentor program helps students of Devonport, and their families obtain their provisional driver’s license, where they would otherwise have no access to a suitable vehicle or supervisory driver. Sandra French AM and Sam Searle, previous Chief Financial Officer of Multicap Tasmania
Sandra French AM has been presented with Life Membership to Multicap Tasmania – the highest honor the organisation can give to anyone. She was honored as Multicap Tasmania’s fourth Life Member at a Panorama event on 25 June.
Sandra spent over twenty years on the Multicap Tasmania Board with thirteen years as President.
Her empathy towards our clients and their carers has underpinned her enduring commitment to Multicap Tasmania.
Perhaps her strongest legacy has been ensuring that Multicap Tasmania entered the NDIS world with strong cash reserves. This allowed Multicap Tasmania to transition from block funding in advance to fee for service relatively painlessly.
Sandra provided a strong base for our subsequent growth and redevelopment of our housing portfolio for our clients. Something we are very proud of.
Congratulations Sandra.
