On behalf of Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences
(popularly known as KIMS) faculty and staff, I take this
opportunity to welcome you to our Institution and to peruse this
booklet. Here you will find information about the Institute, its
infrastructure, its departments, faculty and staff, academic
programs, activities, admission procedure and other related
aspects.
The Institute was started in the year 1981 and has its own multi
specialty hospital providing tertiary medical care and community
health services. The total
bed strength of the hospital is 1200. It is affiliated to the Rajiv
Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka and
recognized by the Medical Council of India for imparting training
in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various medical and
surgical specialties. The Institute is also recognized by General
Medical Council, UK and is listed in the Directory of Medical
Schools of World Health Organization. The annual intake for
MBBS course is 150 and PG degree/Diploma in various
specialties is 95.
Till date more than 3500 doctors and specialists have graduated
from the Institute. The college has been conducting postgraduate
courses since 1992 in all medical and surgical disciplines. The
Institute provides a very good infrastructure for medical care and
research. It has been in the forefront of academics and health care
delivery with many awards and commendations. It has played a
major role in training medical professionals not only to the
people of Karnataka but through its alumni to across India and
the world over.
Our faculty comprises of very talented, renowned and successful
Physicians, Surgeons and Basic science teachers. We have been
imparting up-to date knowledge and training in an environment
of good diagnostic and therapeutic facilities, research and
academic activity. Looking forward to the future, we anticipate a
challenging and exciting period ahead; for which our faculty and
staff are fully geared for.

About Rajya Vokkaligara Sangha

The Rajya Vokkaligara Sangha was founded in the year 1906 to
promote social, cultural and educational aspirations of the
agricultural community of the erstwhile Mysore State. For 60
years, the Sangha was running a hostel called "Vokkaligara
Hostel", which was providing hostel facilities for all communities.
Many distinguished officers, educationists and political leaders of
Karnataka hailing from rural areas made use of this hostel facility
during their educational career.
The Sangha has been promoting the cause of education. Under its
auspices, the following Institutions are being run:

The number of students studying in all these Institutions is well
over 8000.
About Us Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) was
established in the year 1980 by the Vokkaligara Sangha and is
affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi university of Health Sciences,
Bangalore, Karnataka.
The Vokkaligara Sangha took a formal decision on 2nd
September 1979 to start a Medical College from the year 1980-81
and applied for permission to the Registrar, Bangalore
University. On 30th November 1980, Shri R Gundu Rao, the
Honourable Chief Minister of Karnataka, laid the foundation
stone of the Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences and
Hospital in the premises of the Sangha and announced the grant
of vacant land in Banashankari to be used for the construction of
college building and hostels. Thereafter, the Sangha appointed
Dr. M Basavaraju, Professor of Physiology as the Principal on 1st
January 1981 and other staff by March 1981 and classes were
started regularly from the 16th March 1981. Since then 16th
March is observed every year as KIMS Day. The Silver Jubilee
Celebrations of the Institute was held in the year 2006. A
Magnificent college building to mark the centenary celebrations
of the Vokkaligara Sangha and the Silver Jubilee of KIMS has
been built at the Banashankari Campus
About logo The emblem of KIMS consists of central wand with entwined
snakes symbolizing the Greek and Roman Gods of Health called
Hermis and Mercury- A symbol of modern medical science. The
tower at the top depicts one of the four towers erected by Sri
Magadi Kempegowda, the founder of the Bangalore city who
had erected these towers in all four directions to mark the
boundary of the city of the Bangalore which still exists as tourist
spots though the city has grown beyond these limitations. The
motto SATHATHA SEVA THATHPARATHE scripted in
Kannada language proclaims the goal in the life of every KIMS
graduate meaning Always devoted to the service (of mankind).
Objectives of the Institution Impart training to medical students to be competent in the management of health
problems of the individual and the community, commensurate with his/her position as a
member of the society and familiarize with the national health programmes.
Develop his/her personal characteristics and attitude required for professional life such
as personal integrity, sense of responsibility, dependability and ability to relate to or
show concern for other individuals.
Enable him/her to work as a leading partner in health care teams, gear up to mobilize
resources to meet the health needs of natural calamities when required.
Enable him/her to acquire proficiency in communication skills to appreciate social,
psychological, cultural, economic and environmental factors affecting health and to
develop human attitude towards discharging ones professional responsibility.
Develop attitudes for continued self learning and seek further expertise or to pursue
research in any chosen area of medicine KIMS is recognized by the Medical Council of
India permanently for running of MBBS Course since 1980-81 and also running Post-
graduate degree/diploma courses since 1991-92 and these courses are also recognized
by Government of India.

Undergraduate MBBS course
The college is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health
Sciences, Karnataka and is recognized by the Medical council of
India. The MBBS course is governed by the regulations of the
Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka. The
duration of the course is four and half years of Academic study
and one year of internship.
The students begin their First professional year with one month
of Foundation course. This helps the student in the transition from
high school to the professional course. It provides a bridge course
for students from different boards, language of instruction,
background and cultures. During the First Professional year they
study the subjects of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. As
a motivation to learn, early Clinical Exposure is introduced in the
beginning of the first professional year. This exposure enhances
basic science learning and helps to correlate their learning to the
care of the patient.
After successfully completing the Pre- Clinical course, the
students enter the Second Professional year of one year duration,
during which they will be Studying subjects Pharmacology,
Pathology and Microbiology. During this period they will
attending clinical postings in the hospital and will be exposed to
few aspects of the clinical subjects. They will appear for the
examinations at the end of one year after which they enter the
Third Professional year Part 1.
At the end of one year they will be taking up examination
comprising of the subjects viz., Forensic Medicine& Toxicology,
Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology and Community Medicine.
After completion of exam at the end of Third Professional year
Part 1 and before the commencement of Third Professional year
Part 2, two months are allotted for electives postings. The student
will rotate through two electives blocks each comprising of 4
weeks duration. Introduction of Electives in the new Curriculum
will provide flexible choices in student’s area of interest, direct
individual experience and also help students to develop self
directed learning skills.
At the end of Third Professional year Part 2, the student will
be taking examinations in the following subjects’ viz., General
Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics and Obstetrics and
Gynaecology. After successfully completing the exams they will
undergo their internship for one year.
MBBS Course
Eligibility for admission
1. The candidates should have passed the two years PUC
examination conducted by the Pre-University Education Board,
Karnataka State, with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional
subjects or any other examination recognized as equivalent to it
by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore.
OR The candidates should have passed the BSc examination of
Bangalore University or any other statutory University provided
he/she has passed the BSc examination with not less than three of
the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology.
2. The Candidates should have secured not less than 50% of the
total marks in Science subjects taken altogether at the qualifying
examination and CET/COMED-K. However, the OBC-3A
category and SC/ST students of Karnataka are required to secure
40% of the total marks.
3. The Candidate should have completed seventeen years of age
as on 31st December of the year of admission.
4. Foreign students desiring admission should produce:
(a) A No Objection Certificate from the Department of Health &
Family Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi. (b) An
eligibility Certificate from the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health
Sciences, Bangalore. (c) Student Visa. (d) Residential Certificate.
5. The Selection is based on the NEET exams conducted once a
year by CBSE.
6. Among the total number of seats available i.e. 150, 40% (60
Seats) will be filled by the CET examination results for the
domicile of Karnataka only. 40% (60 Seats) will be filled by the
examination results of COMED-K examination. Both the above
admissions will be entirely on merit basis. Of the remaining 15%
(22 seats) will be for the NRI students and others and 5% (8
seats) will be for Institutional preference.

KIMS Hospital
The KIMS hospital was established in the year 1990 and is located in the heart
of Bangalore city and in close proximity to the City market. It is a multi
speciality hospital having 1100 beds offering services ranging from Medicine,
Surgery,ObstetricsandGynecology,Pediatrics,Dermatology,ENT,Opthalmology,
Preventive Medicine, Forensic Post- mortem facility and Pathology
,Microbiology ,Biochemistry investigational facilities. It fulfils the requirements
of the Medical council of India with respect to MBBS and Postgraduate courses.
The Eastern block on the ground floor houses the the Medicine department,
Radiodiagnosis department and the offices of the Dean & Principal, Medical
Director, Medical Superintendent and administrative Medical Officer. The I st
floor houses Medicine wards & the second floor has Surgical wards. The 3rd
floor has Obstetrics and Gynaecology wards ,also well equipped operation
Theatre and Labour rooms. The 4th
floor comprises of the Operation Theater
complex ,CCU and 5th
floor has Pediatric wards and Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit(NICU) and Pediatric Intensive care unit (PICU).
The Western block on the ground floor houses the Outpatient departments of
Medicine, Orthopedics, Dermatology, Community Medicine, Dental & OBG
departments. The first floor has OPD’s of Surgery, ENT, Pediatrics,
Superspecialities. It also has Dialysis center and ART center. In the second floor
KIMS Heart center with a well equipped ICCU with CATH lab has been started.
It also houses the Psychiatry department. Special wards are situated in the third
floor. The fourth floor houses Orthopedics department. The fifth floor houses
Opthalmology , ENT & Dermatology Departments.
The sixth floor has 150 seat Ac auditorium, 3 Lecture halls, Post graduate
seminar hall, Board room,Hospital library and Internet center. The cellar has
parking facilities reserved for doctors. Super spaciality services include
Cardiology, Gastro-enterology, Neurology and Endocrinology, Pediatric
Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Neuro surgery, urology and Vascular Surgery. A 24 hr
pharmacy, Blood bank, CT and MRI facilities are available. A full fledged
canteen and KIMS co-operative Society are located in the hospital.
The Vokkaligara Sangha which manages this Hospital is represented by the
Chairman, Hospital Development Committee. The day to day administration is
looked after by the Medical Superintendent and Hospital Administrator.
Health Training
The Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) is located at Yarabnagar near KIMS
college. The three primary health centres viz., Sulikere, K.Gollahalli and
Kengeri PHCs are attached to the Institute. The Institute has a Rural Health
Training Centre (RHTC) at Kengeri about 12 kms from Bangalore. There are
facilities for Interns to stay in the Training Centre for the training programme
under the Department of Community Medicine.
There are three sub centres of RHTC at Mylsandra, Kuvempunagara and
Varahasandra respectively. Health training facilities are also provided at the
Epidemic Diseases Hospital, Old Madras Road Leprosy hospital Magadi road &
Corpoaration referral hospital, Banashankari.
Scientific and Research activities The Institute has been very active in academic and research activities. Various
programs like clinical updates, CMEs, clinical meetings and mortality meetings
are conducted by various departments. In addition, the post-graduate
departments have their weekly journal clubs, subject seminars and clinical
discussions. Guest lectures by eminent specialists are arranged periodically
which are very popular among students and staff. The teaching staff of
Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences have been attending national and
international conferences and chairing sessions. Many research projects are
undertaken by various departments in addition to the dissertation work of the
post-graduate students. All these require clearance from the Institutional Ethics
committee before the work begins.
Library The KIMS Library was established in 1981 when the College started
functioning. Year after year it has made steady progress and has grown into a
collection of 26,781 Medical Books and 7999 bound volumes with subscription
to 115 current periodicals on various Medical subjects. There is also a library in
the hospital complex to cater to the clinical departments with a seating capacity
of 100 and there are 5869 books available in this library. Both the central library
and the hospital library have in addition a digital library with internet facilities.
In addition to above, all departments have a department library of their own. The
library is open from 8:30 am to 9:00 pm on all workings days. Photocopy
facilities are available in both the libraries. There are also reading rooms for the
students to bring in their own reading material to study. The reading room will
be open 24 hours. The total seating capacity of both college and Hospital library
is 530.

Hostels
There are two separate hostels at present, one for the boys and another for the
girls. The boys and girls hostels are located in the Institute campus at
Banashankari and can accommodate about 300 students each. Student Welfare
Officer and Wardens are always available to students and interns to lend a
patient ear to all their problems related to curricular activities and to provide
suitable remedies. PG residential complex is situated at the hospital premises
KIMS Men's Hostel
The Men's Hostel has 102 rooms and is located in the Banashankari Campus
adjacent to KIMS Pre-clinical Block, Bangalore - 560070. The rooms are well
furnished and each room accommodates 2-3 persons. The hostel has mess
facilities serving both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. There is a round the
clock vigil provided through a professional security agency and the visitors are
screened and allowed inside. There is a manager in the hostel to attend to the
problems of the inmates. There is a general control and discipline in the hostel
and the inmates are not allowed to be away unauthorisedly in the night hours.
CC TV camera surveillance is installed at the hostel.
At the time of admission, an amount of Rs. 90,000/- is charged, of which Rs
500/- is application fee, Rs 12,000/- is hostel development fund, Rs 2000/- is
EWF, Rs 6000/- is free hostel fund and Mess advance is Rs 69,000/- per year.
Monthly charges include food, accommodation and establishment charges which
will be deduced from the advance mess payment.
A Senior Professor is the Warden and he is responsible for the day to day
administration. A senior associate professor residing in the adjacent staff
quarters is the assistant warden. For further details contact manager/warden: Tel.

orders smoking, alcohol consumption, drug abuse, ragging are banned in the
premises.
KIMS Ladies Hostel The Ladies Hostel has 121 rooms and is located in Banashankari Campus
adjacent to KIMS Pre-clinical block, Bangalore - 560070. The rooms are well
furnished and each room accommodates 2-3 persons. The hostel has mess
facilities serving both Vegetarian and Non-vegetarian food. There is a guest
room facility in the hostel for visiting parents of students to stay for short
duration. There is an internet facility with roadband connection in the hostel. RO
water filter plant has been installed. Round the clock vigil is provided through a
professional security agency and the visitors are screened and allowed inside.
CC TV Camera Surveillance is installed in the Ladies Hostel. Biometric is
installed for staff and students. There is a resident manager in the hostel to
attend to the problems of the inmates round the clock. There is a general control
and discipline in the hostel and the inmates are not allowed to be away
unauthorisedly in the night hours. There is an own book reading room facility
inside the hostel.
At the time of admission, an amount of Rs. 90,000/- is charged. Mess advance of

Resident Quarters
A New Resident Quarters complex for 100 postgraduates and house surgeons is
constructed at the hospital campus.
Staff quarters A new renovated staff quarters for 26 teaching and 36 non teaching staff is
provided at the banshankari campus
Transport There are six buses including one mini bus and two vans available for
transportation of students from Banashankari campus to the Hospital premises
and also for transportation to various training centres.
Sports / GYM The college has a fully equipped Gym with a 10 Station Multi-Gym, two
Treadmills and Steppers and a trained Instructor. The Gym is open to all
students of KIMS from 6.00 AM to 8.00 AM and 4.00 PM to 8.00 PM. Indoor
Games like Chess, Carom and Table tennis are also available. The New Sports
Complex coming up will house two Synthetic Tennis Courts, Basketball and
Volleyball Courts and an Amphitheatre.
Medical Education Unit The college has medical education cell with a seating capacity of 50 with state-
of the art audio visual aids for faculty development, preparation of learning
resource materials and improved evaluation methods.
KIMS Co-operative Society The KIMS Co-Operative Society was started in the year 1981. It caters to the
needs of students and staff in their requirement of books, stationary and other
articles at concessional prices. All students of KIMS and teaching faculty
members are share holders of the society. The board of directors of the society
consists of teaching faculty as well as students.
Canteen The Hospital canteen Sri Nidhi Sagar caters to the need of faculty, students and
staff at KIMS Hospital. A new spacious canteen with modern amenities is now
open at the college campus.
Bank/ATM Punjab National Bank is situated in the college campus to cater to the banking
need of the students. ATM facilities are available. ATM's of Corporation Bank,
Canara Bank, State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank are situated
surrounding the college premises. Syndicate Bank, BIT Branch caters to the
need of students and hospital staff in the Hospital premises.
About the Course
75 % attendance is compulsory for becoming eligible to take the university
exams in the respective subject. In general medicine attendance shall be
calculated including the allied subjects like Respiratory medicine, Psychiatry,
Dermatology, Lab Medicine, HIV medicine, Casualty & Emergency medicine.
In general surgery attendance will be calculated including Anaesthesia &
Radiology.
Internal assessment exam is compulsory before taking RGUHS exams in the
respective subjects. Retaining old marks is not allowed.
All undergraduate students have to maintain and regularly update their academic
training log book provided to them in I MBBS and retain the same till the end of
their Internship training. These log books have to be produced to obtain their
completion & other certificates

Anatomy being the most fundamental subject of medical science, Department
comprises of adequate, well qualified experienced teaching faculty and well-
trained non-teaching faculty to maintain the department at its best.
Department of Anatomy has spacious and well-ventilated dissection hall with 20
dissection tables, mortuary. Histology Laboratory is well equipped with LED
Light microscopes with LCD projectors and TV screens for effective learning
activity. Also has facilities for photomicrography.
The department has well maintained museum with wet and dry specimens,
embryology models, anthropometric instruments and comparative anatomy
specimens which reflects on basic understanding of the subject.
Department contains spacious and well equipped(Audio visual aids)
demonstration rooms to facilitate small group learning activities; seminar hall,
and library enriched with latest reference and textbooks of Human Anatomy,
national and international journals .
The department is actively involved in Voluntary Body Donation Programme
which enables many to live after death for higher purposes by becoming a very

Department of Physiology is comprised of young & enthusiastic faculty
who aim to imbibe a firm foundation of medical knowledge in their
undergraduate & Post graduate students. The P.G. intake is 2 seats every year.
The department has spacious demonstration halls & laboratories. It is well

The Department of Biochemistry is well placed within the institution in fulfilling
the academic requirements of the students. It has adequate, learned and
competent teaching staff who also serves as advisors/mentors for the benefit of
the students. The physical infrastructure is adequate with all necessary labs and
departmental library. The clinical wing of this department is a well equipped
laboratory at KIMS Hospital, housing state of the art equipment catering to the
Diagnostic needs of the patients. The Post-Graduate program here is recognized
by the M.C.I and many students, after their successful completion have been
well placed at various medical colleges, private institutions. There is also a PhD
program which is recognized by the R.G.U.H.S. There is an emphasis on
research activities, with students from other departments receiving assistance in
their dissertation/thesis topics. The well equipped clinical laboratory can also be
gainfully used by interested students for furthering their studies/projects. There

The pathology department has been very active in academic diagnostic and
research work. It is in fore front in imparting up to date knowledge and training
to both UG and PG students.
The department has 7 MD Pathology seats per year. Active PG teaching
includes regular subject seminar, journal club, biopsy review, gross seminars,
topic discussion etc. along with hands on training. AV aids like CCTV with
attached camera and microscope, Penta Head microscope and computer assisted
microscope with photographic facilities are utilized in teaching UG and PG
students apart from utilizing the photograph for poster presentation, paper
presentation and for dissertation. Department library with latest books are
available for references. Systematically organized museum with more than 1000
mounted specimens and 250 wet specimens in the bins are available. Many
research projects are undertaken by departmental staff in addition to the

Department of Forensic Medicine trains M.B.B.S students to undertake and
handle all types of Medico legal work. Theory and Practical classes are
conducted as per MCI and RGUHS guidelines.Department of Forensic
medicine started PG(MD) courses in the year 2002. It is recognized by MCI.
The department admits 4 PG students every year. PG students passed out from
KIMS are working as Teachers and Forensic Experts in Karnataka and other
neighboring states.
All types of Medico legal work like post mortems, Examination of sexual
offence cases, Bones examination and Exhumation are conducted by the
department. Work concerned with 15 police stations of Banashankari and
Jayanagar Subdivision of Bangalore city Police is undertaken by the
department. The Post Mortems are conducted at KIMS Hospital Mortuary on
all the times of the day rendering necessary service to the public of Bangalore

The Department of Community Medicine is one of the para-clinical departments
of Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS). The objective of this
Department is to provide a high quality training in Community Medicine to the
under graduate medical students enrolled for MBBS (basic medical degree) and
post graduate medical students enrolled for MD (Community Medicine). The
other activities of the Department are to conduct basic research, conduct training
programs and to provide promotive, preventive and curative health services to
the community for the health and welfare of the people. The department runs a
rural health training centre (RHTC) situated in Kengeri about 13 Kms from
Bangalore. It was established in the year 1983. The RHTC has a well equipped

the RHTC. The department also runs an urban health training centre (UHTC)
situated in Parvathipura, about 0.5 kms from the KIMS Hospital. In KIMS

The department of ENT at KIMS, since its inception has progressed into
multispeciality centre including a vertigo clinic. Currently the department has
well qualified and highly experienced professors with over twenty years of
teaching experience , two associate professors, one assistant professor, two
senior and five junior residents, with an intake of 3 MS candidates every year
along with undergraduate students. The department has an out patient inflow
of about 100 to 150 patients per day, and is well equipped with 30- bedded
male and female general wards and a temporal bone dissection lab. Every
week about 20 ENT surgeries are conducted. The OT is well equipped with
specialized ENT surgical setup which includes a Karl Zeiss microscope, nasal
endoscopes with video display facility for demonstration to students. Head
and neck onco surgeries are also conducted with the help of a visiting Head
and Neck oncosurgeon regularly. The department is equipped with latest
audio-visual aids, PG seminar hall and a spacious UG teaching room. The
department has conducted several regional, national and international
conferences on various topics, including international rhinoplasty conference
by Dr. Jung from South Korea. The faculty has published several scientific
papers in conferences, national and international journals. Several clinical

Ophthalmology department started functioning as undergraduate department
since 1982 and got established as a post graduate teaching institution from
1991, for master degree from 1991 and diploma degree since 1997. The
patient input to the department is excellent providing good atmosphere for
learning. The departments admits 4 M.S. seats every year. The daily average
OPD attendance is about 90-100 patients. All major investigational
procedures are done regularly. Surgical facilities available include anterior
segment surgeries: hi-tech microsurgeries done for cataract, glaucoma,
squint, eyelid and adnexal surgery, emergency trauma eye care services &
posterior segment work up also done regularly. The department conducts
screening camps in rural areas, school eye screening programs & hospital
based camp surgeries. Eye banking services are provided round the clock.
Procurement of eyeballs from the hospital as well as outside calls are
attended & eyeballs are distributed to other corneal surgeons at Minto RIO
and Lions eye hospital. Keratoplasties done on a regular basis Speciality
clinics such as uvea, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology and cornea are

The department of general medicine is accommodated in the I floor of KIMS
hospital old block with adequate inpatient beds, teaching demonstration
rooms, procedure rooms, library, dept office & staff rooms. The outpatient
component is in the ground floor of new block southern wing. The
department has an average OPD of 130-140 patients daily and 75-80 % bed
occupancy. The KIMS ART CCC with 20 bedded inpatient facility to cater to
needy retroviral patients has an OPD of about 80 – 100 patients daily and is
supported by the teaching staff of Medicine in day to day management of in
patients. In addition the department of Medicine is also supporting the
smooth running of the dialysis units, 8 in number which function round the
clock caring to both in patients & out patients. The tuberculosis & chest
medicine headed by a qualified chest physician and the RNTCP unit which is
attached to it also forms ancillary part of the department. Follow up OPDs
and specialty clinics in Diabetes, Hypertension & Respiratory diseases is seen
in addition to the regular OPD. The department offers PG course in General
Medicine with an annual intake of 10 seats.

The department has adequate inpatient beds and separate super specialty
departments. The department has a separate outpatient wing catering to about 200
patients per day. The outpatient has the entire infrastructure including a minor OT,
seminar room and consultation rooms. The department has four major operation
theatres and a separate laparoscopic theatre. Emergencies are handled round the
clock and the department manages a separate emergency and trauma wing.The
department has all basic equipment like Endoscopes, Laparoscopes, Doppler's, all
equipment required for major surgeries including the super specialties of paediatric
surgery, plastic surgery, urology and neurosurgery. The department also imparts
Postgraduate teaching with an annual intake of 10 candidates. There are 12
postgraduate teachers in the department. In addition to regular seminars, Journal
clubs, bedside teachings and mortality meetings the department also conducts the
monthly meeting of the Bangalore surgical society. At least 20 papers are presented
in various conferences held locally, state, national and international conferences
every year. The department also boasts of conducting the state and national
conference at KIMS. The department has also conducted the advanced surgical
update and laparoscopic workshop at its venue.

Emergencies. The department efficiently manages emergency & trauma. The
department has all basic equipments for trauma surgeries, arthroplasty,
arthroscopy, spinal surgeries, orthopaedic fracture table, C-arm, electric drill,
pneumatic drill & all equipments required for major surgeries. Academic
activities of the department are very regular. Seminars, journal clubs, subject
reviews, subject symposia, clinical meetings & mortality meetings are held

The department of radio-diagnosis examines over 1,50,000 patients every year. It
is spread over a large area of over 10,500 square feet with a separate seminar
room of a capacity to seat 60 students. All forms of diagnostic and interventional
radiologic procedures are performed. The department is equipped with two state
of the art 800Ma & 600Ma high frequency x-.ray machines with image intensifier
, one 600Ma x-ray machine for routine radiography work, One Tejas 6000 (50KV)
high frequency x-ray machine for Outpatient department, 4 C arm x-ray machines
for O.T and 6 portable x-ray machines for in-patients.The department has two
voluson ultrasound machines, which have 3D – 4D facility and 4 regular Doppler
machines. Three Philips HD7 and one Philips HD9 ultrasound machines, One
Logic 200 black and white ultrasound machine, One just vision portable
ultrasound machine. The department has 16 slice bright speed spiral CT machine.
One high end 16 channel MRI machine of 1.5 Tesla strength with ADW 4.6
advanced work station. One DSA equipment for intervention procedures. Two
mini PACS (Ashva & scan doc).for intra departmental discussion. Two computed
radiography (C.R systems) systems (Fuji & carestream). Our department is having
a separate X-Ray museum which houses large number of x-ray films, posters,
specimens, CD's and spare x-ray equipments etc. To handle all these machines
and to teach students, dedicated teaching staff and technical and supporting staff is
available. Our department is providing 24 x 7 services to the patients. The
department is sanctioned 3 MD seats by MCI per year.

The department of psychiatry came into existence in 1991.After the initiation of a
full fledged psychiatric unit with inpatient and outpatient facilities. The post
graduate programme (MD) in psychiatry was started in the year 1998 with annual
intake of 2 PG seats every year. Till date 12 postgraduates have completed their
training. The department seeks to provide outstanding education and training
opportunities in psychiatry to undergraduate medical students as well as
postgraduate trainees. Residency programme of the department aims at training
psychiatrists in preparation for their leadership roles both in the public and
private sectors. Continuing Medical Education programmes are organized on a
regular basis to provide current update for psychiatrists and other medical
practitioners. The department receives students and research workers from
centers of excellence abroad for specialized training. Research goals of the
department are to develop a deeper understanding of the causes of psychiatric
illness and to create more effective diagnostic, treatment and prevention
strategies for these disorders. The department also aims to advance the
understanding of psychiatric aspects of medical illnesses. Clinical mission of the
department focuses on offering integrated state-of-the art biological,
psychological and social approaches in the care of patients and their families.

The department was started in the year 1985. It has 1 unit with 30 beds.
Postgraduate course was started in the year 2006. The department acts as a nodal
centre for the anti retroviral therapy which is given free of cost to the HIV
afflicted patients. Procedures done at the department include phototherapy,
electro cautery, cryotherapy, woods lamp examination, punch grafting, epilation,
biopsy, KOH scraping, chemical cautery, chemical peeling blister grafting,
narrow hole excision technique etc. The department had organized South Zone
Laser conference in April 2009. Vitiligo Day was observed to promote
awareness regarding causes and treatment of vitiligo in August 2009. The
department also has the cosmetology centre facility. Laser centre, & hair
transplantation clinic are the proposed activities starting shortly.

discipline. KIMS has started the department for stream lining and better management of

Emergency Medicine department is established in the ground floor of hospital. Multi
speciality ICU with 18 beds is housed adjacent to the department. Imaging facility,
central laboratory. Blood bank, 24 hours pharmacy, Admission & registration counter
present adjacent to the department caters to the needs of the patient. Well trained

Code of Conduct
The students who are admitted to Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences shall observe the
following code of conduct.
1. The students should conduct themselves in an exemplary manner that shall be a model for other
students.
2. All students will strictly adhere to the rules and regulations of the Institute. Students who
deliberately break these rules will be expelled from the Institute.
3. The Institute will function between 9 a.m. to 5p.m. on all working days. The students should be
present during these hours and sincerely apply themselves to studies.
4. The students shall attend the classes regularly and punctually. A minimum attendance of 80% in
each subject is required as a condition of eligibility for appearing for University Examination.
5. All students shall attend the Institute in a dress code befitting medical students.
6. The students shall always bring with them the prescribed books and instruments for the classes.
They shall handle laboratory equipment carefully. If students do not follow or fail to understand
anything in the class, they should feel free to approach the concerned teacher immediately after the
class or at any convenient time in the department for clarification. Teachers would be happy to clear
their doubts and guide them.
7. The students while working in the Hospital and in the community should be polite to their patients
and conduct themselves in a manner which will uphold the reputation of the Institute and the medical
profession.
8. As per the University regulations, periodic interval evaluation tests will be conducted. The marks
allotted to these examinations are 20% of the total marks of the final University Examination. Hence,
the students shall attend these examinations and should obtain 50% of the marks to be eligible to
appear for the University examination.
9. The students shall not participate in strikes or resort to any violent form of demonstration, which
will be detrimental to the cause of medical education.
10. The students shall always carry with them the identity card issued by the institute. Admission to
Library, Sports/Gym, Institute functions, etc, will be done only on production of the Identity Card.
11. The students who stay in the hostel shall strictly follow the rules and regulations of the hostels,
failing which they will expelled from the hostel.
12. The senior students should on no account harass new entrants to the Institute in the name of
ragging. There is a statutory provision to expel a student from the Institute and to institute criminal
proceedings against such students for the offence of ragging. Ragging is a criminal offence and the
institution views it seriously. An anti-ragging committee is constituted and is monitoring the situation
regularly. For any complaints the aggrieved students/ Parents may contact the members.
13. The progress of the students is periodically intimated to the parents. If there is any change of
address of the parent, the same should be communicated to the Principal. In addition, it is desirable
that the parents should contact the principal at least once in 6 months to know the progress of their
ward. The parents are requested to co-operate with the principal to maintain discipline.
14. In case of any problem, students are advised to contact the Principal/Academic Registrar/ Student
Welfare Officer/ Wardens of KIMS men's/ladies hostels as deemed necessary
Punishment for Ragging
Even the smallest incidence of ragging will be seriously dealt with in our college.
Depending on the nature and gravity of the offence as established by the Anti Ragging Committee of
the college, those found guilty of ragging shall be liable for any one or more of the following
punishment.
The decision of the Anti Ragging Committee shall be final and binding.
a. Cancellation of admission.
b. Suspension from attending classes.
c. Debarring from appearing in any test/examination or other evaluation process.
d. Suspension/expulsion from the hostel.
e. Expulsion from the college and consequent debarring from admission to any other institution.
f. Fine of upto Rs.1,00,000/-
g. In the case of offences of very serious/grievous nature, referring the case to the Police, in addition to
any other punishment.
h. Collective punishment where the offence is committed collectively by a group or by a class making
it difficult or not possible to identify specific persons.
