It’s already October, and the academic year is well underway. As we head into the colder months, activities in the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science are heating up.

We are continuing to strengthen our research activities, with enhanced support for researchers coming out of RiO, and more than $3 million in grants attracted this past summer. We’re also looking at strengthening our design presence in a big way, with a promising proposal to NSERC for another Chair in Design Engineering. On the entrepreneurship front, we’ve created a new specialization for undergraduate students, and look forward to its approval by the University. We’ve also just announced the third intake of the Norman Esch Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship Awards for our students, and encourage all students with business ideas to apply. This round of the competition closes October 18.

Taking on the role of Teaching Chair for the Faculty this year is Dr. Medhat Shehata from the Department of Civil Engineering. This influential position reflects the importance of teaching and learning in FEAS. We will look to Dr. Shehata to play a strong leadership role in enhancing the development and delivery of programs in the Faculty.

Speaking of appointments, our Faculty has recently secured some exciting Distinguished Visiting Fellows, including former member of Parliament and mechanical engineering alumnus Omar Alghabra, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Infrastructure Ontario Marni Dicker, and former Xerox business executive Dr. Rafik Loutfy. I invite you to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge and corporate relationships that these Visiting Fellows bring to the table.

On the admissions side, we continue to see an increase in the quality of students applying to our programs. At the undergraduate level, all of our programs are cutting at 80% or higher. This outstanding achievement reflects the ever-growing reputation of Ryerson and of our engineering and architecture programs. Thanks is due to each and every one of you – our dedicated faculty, staff and students – for helping to build the reputation of our programs and our university. Keep up the great work! StUDeNt SUcceSSAWARDS AND COMPETITIONSamerican concrete institute competitionCongratulations to the civil engineering third-year undergraduate students who were runners-up in the American Concrete Institute (ACI) competition. The team consisted of Mahmoud Al-Fayez, Osama Al-Mohammedi, Mo’tasem Aljawhary and Muaawia Janoudy working under the technical advisor, Dr. Medhat Shehata. Teams were challenged to give a recommendation on producing a 100 x 40 foot concrete slab on-grade with minimum shrinkage and submit their recommendation in a report to the Construction Liaison Committee. The team’s recommendations included a optimized mix design incorporating a shrinkage reducing admixture that was economic, easy to use, and effective enough for the application.

2013 toronto urban design competitionFEAS architectural science students won Awards of Merit in the 2013 Toronto Urban Design competition, student projects category. The undergraduate group project “An Architecture of Civility” was the joint effort of approximately 400 architectural science students in all years (working in teams of 12 – 14 ) who acted as ‘Citizen Architects’, under the direction of Prof. George Kapelos, along with Master of Architecture students acting as ‘Community Voices,’ ‘Team Facilitators’ and Project Coordinators, and Architectural Science faculty members acting as ‘Design Champions.’ Master of Architecture student Melody Taghi-Poor also received an award for her project “In Search of Place”. Her project supervisor was Prof. Masha Etkind.

StAFF SUcceSSAPPOINTMENTSdistinguished visiting fellowFormer member of Parliament and Ryerson mechnical engineering alumnus Omar Alghabra has been appointed as a distinguished visiting fellow in FEAS. FAcULtY SUcceSSAPPOINTMENTSassistant professorDr. Goetz Bramesfeld has joined Ryerson as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering. His research interest is applied aerodynamcis and aircraft design with a primary focus on small unmanned aerial vehicles. He is currently investigating nonconvential flight manoeuvers that are possible with this relatively new category of aircraft, for example the challenges and opportunities of flight in a highly gusty environment. Other recent research projects include autonomous soaring on planet Uranus and performance predictions of blue whales. Prior to joining Ryerson, Dr. Bramesfeld was an Assistant

Professor at Saint Louis University in Missouri. Before that, he completed his graduate work at Pennsylvania State University. His hobby is flying sailplanes. New to Ontario, Dr. Bramesfeld, his wife and two sons are looking forward to many fun canoe and hiking trips.

assistant professorThe Department of Civil Engineering welcomes Dr. Serhan Guner, who has joined FEAS as an Assistant Professor. Dr Guner has research interests in nonlinear analysis of concrete structures, shear effects in concrete, and structural dynamics and response to impact, blast and

earthquake loads. Prior to joining Ryerson, Dr. Guner worked as a practicing structural engineer for five years at Morrison Hershfield, in addition to teaching at the University of Toronto as an Adjunct Professor. He received his PhD from the University of Toronto in 2008. Dr. Guner enjoys high-intensity cardio workouts, nutritious food and traveling.

associate professorDr. Stephen Waldman has joined FEAS as an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering with research interests in cartilage tissue engineering and the surgical repair of cartilage for both orthopaedic and otolaryngologic applications. His current projects focus on the resurfacing of damaged joint cartilage in the knee and the reconstruction of the ear and trachea. Dr. Waldman is also an Associate Scientist of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael’s Hospital where his laboratory is located. Prior to joining Ryerson, Dr. Waldman was an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair at Queen’s University for the last ten years, and a recent Visiting Professor at the Bioengineering Department of the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Waldman did his post-doctoral and graduate training at several institutions including Mount Sinai Hospital, the University of Toronto, Dalhousie University and Queen’s University. He enjoys traveling, music and spending time with his wife and two girls.

He was also elected as the Co-Chair of the Working Group IV Commission VII in the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing for 2012-2016. subject editorDr. Farhad Ein-Mozaffari (Chemical Engineering) has been appointed as the subject editor of the prestigious journal, Chemical Engineering Research and Design, published by Elsevier.

teaching chairDr. Medhat Shehata (Civil Engineering) was appointed the Teaching Chair for FEAS. The Teaching Chair program is a university-wide initiative that began in 2010 to cultivate and promote teaching excellence and enhance the student learning experience. This influential position reflects the importance of teaching and learning in FEAS.

AWARDSmetsoc awardCongratulations to Dr. Ravi Ravindran (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) who received the 2013 MetSoc Award for Research Excellence from the Metallurgy and Materials Society (MetSoc) of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Petroleum. Dr. Ravindran was presented with the award in Montreal on July 8.

Dr. Xavier Fernando (Electrical and Computer Engineering) obtained close to $130,000 for the project “Wireless Performance Monitoring of Plug-in Electric Vehicules.”

Dr. Ling Guan (Electrical and Computer Engineering) secured $400,000 for the project “An Intelligent Rendering Framework for Adaptive Mixed Reality Applications on Canada’s Historic Heritage Sites.” Dr. Guan will work with three post-doctorate fellows and industry partner AWE Company Limited.

Dr. Ramani Ramakrishnan (Architectural Science) obtained $35,000 for the project “Effects of the installation of wind turbines in the West Lincoln Township of Niagara Region” and will work with the Regional Municipality of Niagara.

Dr. Shudong Yu (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) received approximately $135,000. Dr. Yu and three students will work with industry partner Candu Energy Inc. on the project “Modelling vibration of 37-element CANDU fuel string in an aged pressure tube.”

Dae Kun Hwang and Stephen Waldman (Chemical Engineering), Sri Krishnan, Beau Standish and Karthi Umpathy (Electrical and Computer Engineering), and Habiba Bougherara, Mark Towler and Scott Tsai (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) were previously appointed as associate professors with St. Michael’s Hospital and will have research facilities there. A tour of the common research facilities took place on September 19.

karlsruhe univesityRepresentatives from Karlsruhe Univesity of Applied Sciences in Germany visited Ryerson to renew its double degree exchange agreement on September 13. Prior to the signing, the representatives visited FEAS to tour the Centre for Urban Energy and review groundbreaking research by Drs. Ling Guan and Sri Krishnan’s (Electrical and Computer Engineering) graduate students, among other activities.

smart grid laboratoryThe creation of a new Schneider Electric Smart Grid Laboratory is the focus of several articles given that the university laboratory is the first of its kind in Canada.
