from the DeanMessageIt is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to Florida Atlantic University’s newest Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Fort Lauderdale. Our two other Osher institutes on Boca and Jupiter campuses have more than twenty years of experience bringing exceptional educational programs to our South Florida community. In fact, FAU’s Osher institutes are the largest in the whole country! Now, you too can experience the quality of our programing in downtown Fort Lauderdale at our host partner’s fantastic facilities, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), Fort Lauderdale (FLL) at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), began with its successful first season in the Spring of 2019 with a mission to provide enriching educational experiences to adults of all ages through a diverse and creative curriculum. Taught by outstanding university faculty and guest lecturers, FAU’s OLLI is designed to broaden its students’ understanding of varied cultural, societal, scientific and global issues. Our sister programs, Boca OLLI and Jupiter OLLI, began holding courses in community spaces in the 1990’s. Today they both have independent buildings on those campuses. Likewise, our program courses will begin at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. It is our goal to build a thriving program with a permanent location in the heart of Fort Lauderdale offering OLLI members and the community access to hundreds of university-level courses for learners of all backgrounds and interests spanning a broad range of topics which include foreign policy, music, art, history, science, literature, philosophy, current events, films, and health & wellness.

FPL10312AN The Age of Competing Islamisms: A Fight over the Future of the Middle East
Presenter: Mehmet GursesThursday, October 31, 3 – 4:30 pmAbdo New River Room, Broward Center
$30 Members | $35 Nonmembers | $35 One-time Guest Pass at the Door (Member/Nonmember)$75 for any combination of three events, members only. Bundle purchases are not refundable.
While much has been said about the centuries-old rivalry between Shiite and Sunni Islam, the emerging balance of power in the Middle East points to an epoch characterized by a noteworthy split within the Sunni Middle East. This split has pitted different types of Islamism against one another. On the one hand, we have a resurgent Turkey attempting to claim its “Islamic” past and aligning with certain Muslim groups and states. This “pro-change” Islamist camp consists of Turkey, Qatar, and several non-state actors, notably the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt. One another hand, an alliance led by Saudi Arabia and Egypt strives to preserve
the status quo in the region. While these two forms of Islamism compete for power and influence, they also have to account for the Iran-led Shite bloc with different goals and ideology. The Middle East is increasingly turning into an arena in which these three types of Islamism compete for the future of Islam and region. In this one-time lecture, Dr. Mehmet Gurses tackles this new and potentially much more dangerous division in the Middle East. How does this change impact our allies in the region? Do these changes necessitate finding new allies in the Middle East? How will these monumental changes affect America’s key ally, Israel, in the region?

FPL11062AN Mobilizing the Humanities For the Future of Democracy
Presenter: Karen J. LeaderWednesday, November 6, 3 – 4:30 pmAbdo New River Room, Broward Center
$30 Members | $35 Nonmembers | $35 One-time Guest Pass at the Door (Member/Nonmember)$75 for any combination of three events, members only. Bundle purchases are not refundable.
If the humanities are understood to encompass human belief, knowledge, expression and experience, mobilizing them asserts the value of humanistic inquiry to human flourishing. Indeed, liberal arts education is a cornerstone of a democratic citizenry, which must be capable of discernment and critical thought. Yet the humanities are being stifled by STEM, marginalized by the instrumentalization of higher education, and threatened with extinction through the business model that privileges “performance” over academic excellence. This illustrated lecture, utilizing art history as a paradigmatic discipline, will demonstrate
that, hardly the elitist or soft disciplines disrespected by pundits and politicians, the humanities are in fact essential for the challenges we face. To mobilize is to marshal, deploy, muster, rally, call up, assemble, amass, organize. The word connotes action, and mobility implies movement. This presentation delivered via lecture with slides and suggested readings will explore and critique ways in which embattled public education connects to our increasingly fragile democracy. Dr. Leader will argue for an engaged humanities, ready to occupy the public sphere and reclaim the body politic.

FPL11071AN Words Alive Presents Nightingale by Kristin Hannah: Reading and Discussion
Presenter: Words... AliveThursday, November 7, 3 – 4:30 pmAbdo New River Room, Broward Center
$30 Members | $35 Nonmembers | $35 One-time Guest Pass at the Door (Member/Nonmember)$75 for any combination of three events, members only. Bundle purchases are not refundable.
Words...Alive has returned year after year to FAU Lifelong Learning in Boca and Jupiter with our presentations. THE NIGHTINGALE is an adapted reading of the book The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. It is the story of two sisters who face the Nazi occupation in very different ways. The older sister has a child and a husband at the front and is prepared to do whatever it takes to survive the war. The younger, more adventuresome, sister joins the underground. If she is
caught, her whole family will be punished which creates a terrible breach between the sisters. The older sister’s best friend is Jewish and when the rounding up of Jews starts, she asks her friend to take her baby boy and bring his up as her own. Again, the cautious sister is torn between friendship and putting her own family at risk. Three professional actresses will bring this remarkable book alive with their dramatic reading. It is a great story and a very popular book.

FPL11132JM Royals Who Rocked the World:From the Tudors to the Windsors
Presenter: Margery MarcusWednesday, November 13, 3 – 4:30 pmJM Family Studio, Broward Center
$30 Members | $35 Nonmembers | $35 One-time Guest Pass at the Door (Member/Nonmember)$75 for any combination of three events, members only. Bundle purchases are not refundable.
The British royal family is a study in contrast: history, pageantry, and, of course, scandal. From the very first Tudor Henry VII (whose claim to the throne may be questionable) to the family of Queen Elizabeth II, royal behavior has simultaneously fascinated and repelled onlookers. Henry VIII’s great love for Anne Boleyn changed the religion of a nation, while 400 years later, Edward VIII’s
great love for Wallis Simpson changed the monarchy forever. Dr. Margery Marcus examines 500 years of political intrigues, wars, secret love affairs and other royal hijinks from Henry VII to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (Harry and Meghan). This presentation is accompanied by a colorful PowerPoint, as well as a chart depicting an updated Order of Succession.

FPL12021AN Rasputin: The Man Who Would Not Die
Presenter: Ralph NurnbergerMonday, December 2, 3 – 4:30 pmAbdo New River Room, Broward Center
$30 Members | $35 Nonmembers | $35 One-time Guest Pass at the Door (Member/Nonmember)$75 for any combination of three events, members only. Bundle purchases are not refundable.
The Russian mystic Rasputin was a larger-than-life phenomenon at the court of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. But what is the truth behind the life and death of this charismatic and controversial figure? Do we now know his real killer—or will we ever? The presentation will focus first on the fascinating tale of how a semi-literate peasant from Siberia was able to become one of the most powerful figures in Russia. The lecture will detail his relationships with Nicholas and Alexandra, and his influence on political events in that turbulent era. His 1916 murder has taken on mythic proportions. This unlikely confidante of the Romanovs was called “virtually unkillable” by his
self-proclaimed assassins. The leader of the plot to kill Rasputin, Felix Yusupov, kept changing his story as late as 1967. Recent research has revealed that many of the “facts” people accepted as “true” might have been a fabrication to cover up what really happened. Even the guides at the Yusupov Palace (where Rasputin was murdered) provide different versions. Recent research had revealed a completely different version of these events. This talk will explore the labyrinthine stories and motley characters that swirled around the murder of one of Russia’s most fascinating figures. Even more remarkable, the story ends in Palm Beach, Florida.

Presenter: Robert G. RabilWednesday, December 11, 3 – 4:30 pmAbdo New River Room, Broward Center
$30 Members | $35 Nonmembers | $35 One-time Guest Pass at the Door (Member/Nonmember)$75 for any combination of three events, members only. Bundle purchases are not refundable.
Since its withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal, the Trump administration has imposed suffocating sanctions on Iran with the objective of forcing the Iranian regime to renegotiate a new agreement according to which Iran will disable all paths to weaponize its nuclear program, curb its ballistic missile development and change its regional behavior. Iran has thus far rejected this all-embracing approach of strategic linkage and perceived the sanctions as economic warfare meant to inflict heavy suffering on the Iranian people and force the regime from power. In
fact, Iran (and its proxies) has reportedly fired at oil tankers in the Gulf and shot down an American drone. Though the Trump administration did not retaliate for the downing of the drone, it threatened the Iranian regime with obliteration if U.S. forces are attacked. The threat of war has never been greater and more consequential. Dr. Rabil, in this special lecture, will provide the background against which Washington and Tehran face off, offer ideas about how to secure stability in the Gulf, and probe potential conflict scenarios should war erupt.

Reconstruction of the United States after the American Civil War has been an ongoing process, because Americans began the process not in April 1865 with peace, but in April 1861 with war. Yet, how Americans came to understand this transformative period had as much to do with the historians who in subsequent years gave it a history, as those who lived through the era. Yet, we continue to grapple with how emancipation, the 13th, 14th, 15th Amendments, as well as the political culture refashioned society. The story begins with how each side justified their resort to war and how unintended consequences reshaped society and nation-state
relations from the very beginning. Southern secession forced Americans to adjust their lives to preserve the Union on the one hand, and to establish a Confederacy on the other. As the bloody and transformative Civil War dragged on, citizens and soldiers—North and South—reconstructed their lives to adjust to the changes wrought by the devastating conflict. Few Americans could imagine a more revolutionary decree than Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, but some scholars mark this milestone as the turning point in the Reconstruction era because it commenced the journey from slavery to freedom and fundamentally changed the United States.

In 2013, Russell D. Hamer, PhD a visual neuroscientist who studies how the eye and brain process light information to create our rich visual world, took an audio tour of an exhibition of Rene Magritte’s art at MOMA in NYC. The tour’s descriptions were interesting, full of historical context, but missing any basic understanding of the visual perception “tricks” that Magritte so masterfully employed in his paintings. Driven by curiosity and admiration for the art, Dr. Hamer began to write about Magritte’s work. Join in the discovery as we analyze several of Magritte’s iconic paintings from the unique point-of view (POV) –the visual and brain mechanisms that are evoked by his surreal designs. Like a neuroscientist, Magritte deliberately revealed our visual brain processes in action! Most
discussions of art are from an art-critic’s perspective, but this course will add a new dimension to your appreciation of art.
1. Introduction to Art & Visual Neuroscience (JM Family Studio)
2. Representation in Art & Brain: Magritte’s “La Condition Humaine” (JM Family Studio)
3. How Do We Perceive Objects to Be Organized In 3-D From a 2-D Painting? Magritte’s “Le Blanc Seing” (JM Family Studio)
4. Representation of Emotion and Our Inner Lives: Magritte’s “Les Jours Gigantesque” (Abdo New River Room)

Music, instruments, and songs tell the story of the ordinary and extraordinary people who have populated the United States and propelled it into the twenty-first century: colonists, pioneers, sailors, lumberjacks, immigrants, ‘49ers, farmers, mountaineers, slaves, soldiers, cowboys, railroaders, factory workers, activists, and others. Not only do the lyrics directly reflect the hopes, fears, struggles, sorrows, triumphs, and humanity of the real people who lived history, but to follow the path taken by the music itself is to understand the great cultural stew that is the United States of America. The presenter will speak, sing, and play a variety of instruments, including
guitar, harmonica, banjo, and mountain dulcimer in this informative and entertaining series. The audience will hear, and maybe even sing along with, songs they’ve known their whole life, learn the stories behind the songs, and be introduced to some nearly-forgotten American gems.
1. Songs of a Multicultural Nation
2. Songs of Westward Expansion
3. Songs of American Workers
4. Songs in the Life of Abraham Lincoln
