Marching towards Excellence by Innovation…..

Wishing a very happy and prosperous New Year 2017

Each new day that is given to us comes with new opportunities; taking hold of them and excelling is our duty and responsibility.

Constraints caused by adverse situations can be and should be overcome by the application of innovative mind, out-of-the-box constructive thinking and persistent hard work. Taking challenges and risks is key to success, be it professional or personal arena.

We at SRI look forward to another fruitful year of serving the society by bringing science in terms of real benefits at the grass-root level. Keeping this as priority we are diversifying to newer fields; and one of the latest thrust areas chosen is Metallurgy.

And it is our commitment to continue to do what we do with Reliability, Integrity, Impartiality, and Efficiency as always.

Workshops on Water Quality Shriram Institute for Industrial Research in collaboration with National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC)organized day long workshops at Husainpur Hamid, Moradabad (U.P.)on November 05, 2016 and at Brahmanand College, Kanpur (U.P.) on January 31, 2017.

A one day seminar on ‘Ensuring Safety of Food, Agrochemicals, Medical Devices & Pharmaceuticals’ (FAMP) was organized by Shriram Institute for Industrial Research in the auditorium of India International Centre, New Delhi, on November 16, 2016

The Chief guest Dr. Soumya Swaminathan emphasized upon the importance of Good laboratory practices. She deliberated that if India has to progress & compete in the International market, GLP should be made mandatory for all the labs, so as to improve comparability and allow for mutual acceptance of data (MAD).

A delegation of Scientists from Environmental

Science Division of SRI participated in the EU-India Consultation Workshop on Solid Waste Management Processing Technologies, at The Trident, Mumbai on February 2, 2017 organized under the EU-India Project on Technical Cooperation for Environment.

The purpose of the workshop was to bring together regulators, implementers and other stakeholders to deliberate on their perspectives and challenges faced on solid waste management. Sixty key professionals participated in the workshop, and analyzed strength and weaknesses of technologies, and shared of best practices followed in European Union. The Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, Mr. Ajoy Mehta in his address exhorted the participants to optimize their operations based on learning from the workshop, which include implementation of waste-to-energy as done in Mumbai. The workshop received overwhelming positive response

Workshop at Moradabad

High iron contamination is found in the ground water of Moradabad region, causing

health hazard to the common man who uses it as a regular source of drinking water.

The workshop provided to the people of the

area valuable information on the hazard

and suggested simple practices that can be

adopted for removal of this contamination.

Scientists of SRI with local community at Moradabad Workshop

Workshop at Kanpur

Several locations around Kanpur district have problem of hazardously high levels of chromium contamination in ground water which common man uses as drinking water source. The workshop was organized to educate and spread the awareness of this hazard, and the remedial measures that can be adopted.

Rapid Chloride Permeability Test (RCPT)

Corrosion of reinforcing steel inside reinforced concrete structures due to ingress of salts -typically chlorides- is one of the most common environmental attacks that lead to its deterioration. This results in risk of failure and heavy expenditure on repairs. Accurate assessment of permeability of chlorides into concrete structures is important and wherever there is this potential risk, the concrete should be evaluated for chloride permeability, and remedial measures should be taken.

Fire Resistance Test for Electrical Cables

Rescue and salvage during a fire accident will be much benefited if the critical electrical and control cables continue working for some more time even with the exposure to fire. Modern cables are designed to provide this important window of time. Circuit Integrity Test under Fire as per IEC60331-21 Standard Specification provides this performance evaluation of cables, and is available at SRI

Circuit Integrity Test under fire conditions (resistance to fire: 450 °C to 900 °C) as per IEC 60331-21 at Electrical Testing Lab of SRI

Rapid Chloride Permeability Test set up as per AASHTO T 277 and ASTM C 1202 standards at Cement and Building Materials Lab of SRI

1.“Cancer testis antigens as Molecular Drug Targets Using Network Pharmacology”

Journal of Tumor Biology, Article ID: 5333, 2016.

The paper presents the results of computational network analysis of cancer/testis antigens assessed as drug targets. The protein interaction network of 700 human CT antigens was investigated, which enables to pinpoint a set of candidate proteins that if targeted could be detrimental for cancerous cell without affecting any normal cell. This may help in discovery of new anticancer drug targets.

2.“Standardization and in Vitro Cytotoxicity for PlantExtracts”

World Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Vol 6, Issue 1, 2017

Presented in the paper are the results of analysis of cytotoxicity of extracts prepared from Boswelliaserrataand Withaniasomniferaon mouse fibroblast L-929 cells by in vitro MTT assay. These plants are ingredients of many polyherbal formulations used in the treatment of variety of diseases viz. anti-inflammatory disorders, hyperlipidemia, cancers etc. The results showed reduced cell viability with increasing concentrations, and there were no cell lysis or morphological changes in eitherextracttreated wells, reflecting high standards of extract preparation.
