ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE AND OUR LADY OF THE LAKE/MOUNT CARMEL IS A ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH WITH THE EUCHARIST AS THE CENTER OF ITS LIFE. OUR MISSION, AS DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST, IS TO BUILD UP THE KINGDOM OF GOD BY LEADING, NOURISHING AND SERVING THE COMMUNITY IN WORD AND SACRAMENT. From the Desk of Fr. Szymon Kurpios April 17, 2016 Celebrations of 1050 Years of Poland’s Baptism Two dates are of primary importance for the origins of Christianity in Polish territories: the year 966, when Prince Mieszko I adopted Baptism, and the establishment of the first archdiocese in the year 1000, following a decision of the Congress of Gniezno. The establishment of an archdiocese in Gniezno is linked with the figure of St. Wojciech (Adalbert, ca. 956–997), the main patron saint of Poland along with St. Stanislaus. St. Wojciech, a scion of a rich Bohemian family, laid down his life as an Apostle of the Prussians, assassinated by them on the Baltic Sea. Emperor Otto II’s pilgrimage to his grave in Gniezno in the year 1000 was both an act of international recognition of Poland and provided an impetus for the establishment of the first archdiocese, which consisted of the dioceses of Kołobrzeg, Poznań, Wrocław, and Krakow. This act was of paramount importance since it confirmed the autonomy of the Church in Poland vis-a-vis foreign archdioceses. This paved the way for the coronation of Poland’s first king. Christianity became a religion professed not only by the social elites in the 12th century, and had numerous Romanesque churches. The following century saw numerous foundations made for the sake of religious orders, which resulted in a dynamic development of Catholic schooling. The process culminated with the foundation in 1364 of a university in Krakow. The mendicant religious orders developing at that time played a significant role in the growth of more profound, personalized faith. According to historians on April 14th, 966, on the Holy Saturday, prince Mieszko I was baptized. One thousand years later, on the 14th of April 1966 in Gniezno the main celebrations of the millennium of baptism of Poland were held presided over by Primate of Poland Stefan Wyszynski. For the ceremonies of the 1050th Anniversary of Baptism of Poland, Archbishop Wojciech Polak, Primate of Poland, invited many to Gniezno and to Ostrow Lednicki. The main celebrations will take place on the 15th and 16th of April in Poznan. Poland’s President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Beata Szydlo will take part in the celebrations in Gniezno. Prime Minister of Hungary and Apostolic Nuncio to Poland are also expected. The main event of the Gniezno celebrations will be a Holy Mass in the Royal Gniezno Cathedral presided over by the Papal Legate, and with the homily by the Primate of Poland. The Polish Community of St. James is going to celebrate this 1050th Anniversary of Baptism of Poland in our parish! The main celebration will take place this Sunday, the 17th of April, in Our Lady of the Lake / Mt. Carmel Church at the 12:30PM Mass in Polish. You are invited to join in our celebration at the Mass and in a historical presentation after the Mass. Readings for the Fourth Sunday of Easter First Reading: Acts 13:14, 43-52 -Paul and Barnabas addressed many people, and large crowds gathered to hear them. Some of the Jews became jealous, and argued with whatever Paul said. But Paul and Barnabas continued preaching. Second Reading: Revelation 7:9, 14b-17 -John saw a vision of many people surrounding a throne and the Lamb. One of the elders told him these were the people who had survived great periods of trial, but maintained strong faith in God. Gospel: John 10:27-30 - Jesus states that his sheep know his voice and follow him, and will receive eternal life. Jesus also says that no one can snatch his followers away, because God is greater than anyone who might try, and Jesus is one with God.

Come join us for an evening of praise and worship through song, a quiet time of scripture reading and sharing how God is working in our lives, followed by intercessory prayer, for the intentions of our Pope Francis and all our clergy, for our parish, our own intentions and for those who have asked us to pray. The Prayer Group is open to all parishioners, both young and old. Please join us for a peaceful evening away from the busyness of the day to be with Our Lord.

MEN OF ST. JAMES

The “Men of St. James” come together for prayer and discussion to make what the Pope is calling for a reality here at St. James Church. It is also a place to re-kindle the fire that may have grown dim or just to meet other men who are also trying to be faithful Catholic men. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturday’s at 7:00AM in the Carriage House. Come. “Open the door.” They called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith..." (Acts 14:27)

ST. SEBASTIAN’S TERRACE AND COLUMBARIUM

186 purchased - 266 Niches still available

Our Terrace and Columbarium are open. We have already celebrated Mass at the new Altar and have 89 niches engraved and interred. The price of a niche is $2,500, which gives you the right to inter the cremains of two people. If you have been thinking of purchasing a niche, and would like to schedule an appointment, please contact Mrs. Maureen Larkin at 845-225-2079 on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word that describes a collection of niches to house urns containing cremated human remains. Usually inscribed with the person’s name and dates of birth and death, columbaria are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a ‘churchyard’ or landscaped terrace. May the Lord who has blessed this project now be a final resting place for many of our loved ones.
