Dear Lodge Brothers & Sisters,
I hope this letter finds you well. The Lodge year is underway and
we are off to a great start. We have been busy at our General
Meetings. The upcoming months will also be full of Events,
fundraisers and lots of good fun and camaraderie, look for the
information here in the Newsletter. Then of course there are the
events being held by other Lodges that we enjoy attending, all at no
cost to the Lodge. You are always invited to go along and I urge you
to attend these events and enjoy each others company, like the
extended family we are.
The NYS Convention takes place at the end of the month, the
Lodge Delegates are ready to work, attending meetings and
gathering up information to bring back to you, our Lodge Members.
The Lodges Charitable Donations are in place and will be
announced on the floor of the Convention. We are proud to say we
will be donating $500 each to St Jude’s Childrens Hospital, the
Garibaldi – Meucci Museum and The Independence Fund. Lodge
Brother Larry Filippino has worked with them through the Knights of
Columbus. Every dime the Independence Fund collects, goes toward
the manufacture of all Terrain Wheelchairs and Prosthetics for our
Veterans in need. We are very excited about this new Charity.
Remember, this is the time to show your respect for the Veterans
on Memorial Day and Fly the Flag proudly.
I wish all the Moms, Grandma’s and Great Grandmothers in our
Lodge a wonderful Mothers Day.
I hope to see you at our Lodge YARD SALE, at my house, please
donate, hang out for awhile, we love to see you.
Also we need you to attend our Lodges Fundraiser on July 9th.
Bring family & friends. BRING STRANGERS! Lodge Sister, Luisa
Potenza is working her heart out for this day to be a success.

At the MARCONI LODGE
The LADIES AUXILIARY OF THE MARCONI LODGE, really did an amazing job. They did all the cooking and the food was delicious.
The Celebration: First the Statue of St. Joseph was wheeled out and the Deacon from St. Patricks Church led us in prayer and did the blessing.
After dinner, Platters of San Giuseppe pastry were brought out to the room while the song FUNICULI – FUNICULA was playing, it was so festive.
The Ladies baked these themselves, and the pastry was out of this world, light, flaky, the cream, with a hint of lemon, oh my…..heavenly.
Vice President Grace and I pinned money on the Statue of St. Joseph.
The Ladies presented everyone with a loaf of bread that had been blessed.

The Royal Navy had BLOCKADED GERMANY at the start of World War I. When RMS Lusitania left New York for Britain on MAY 1, 1915, GERMAN SUBMARINE WARFARE WAS INTENSIFYING in the Atlantic. Germany had declared the
seas around the UNITED KINGDOM a war zone, and the German embassy in the United States had placed a newspaper advertisement warning people of the dangers of sailing. On THE Lusitania, On the afternoon of
MAY 7, a German U-BOAT TORPEDOED the Lusitania, 11 mi (18 km) off the southern coast of IRELAND and inside the declared war zone. A second, unexplained, internal explosion sent her to the seabed in 18 minutes,
with the deaths of 1,198 passengers and crew
THE SINKING OF THE LUSITANIA – MAY 7, 1915
I AM READING THE BOOK: DEAD WAKE, AUTHOR; ERIK LARSON, about the sinking of the
Lusitania, during WWI.
The LUSITANIA, was outfitted with a MARCONI TRANSMITTER. It was located in the
MARCONI ROOM.
The men who sent and receive messages were called MARCONI MEN.

Jack Phillips, (TITANIC) wireless operator and other Marconi operators killed in other Maritime disasters.

There is a good chance that you are wearing eyeglasses as you are reading this. If so, thank the
Italians. While historians are not sure of who invented the first spectacles, in the late thirteenth
century, around 1287, paintings appeared with people wearing or holding spectacles. From
these paintings we know that spectacles were invented in Italy. Around 13oo the Venetian
Glassmaker’s Guild made regulations on glasses. They made it illegal for glasses to be made
with glass lenses in place of the more valuable rock crystal. In 1352 eyeglasses were only worn
by the well educated, very rich noblemen or well read Italian clergy. At this time a monk named
Tommaso da Modena documented the church had painted a fresco with an older churchman
wearing glasses while looking over an old manuscript.
In 1456, Gutenberg invented the printing press and this created widespread use of books, and
the use of reading glasses by common people increased. In 1623, the Spanish invented first
grade lenses, improving the trial and error method of different lenses until the wearer found the
lens that worked best for them.
Thank goodness for this invention, or I would not be typing this article or this Newsletter. Angela

In the past, we would have been asking for Chinese auction donations at this time of year. One thing we noticed, is
that more and more people seek out the gift cards at auctions. So, we are going to try something new this year. We
are asking that you get donations of Gift Cards from any business , like you did for auctions. Or that you purchase and
donate the gift cards yourself, instead of making a raffle basket. We will collect them all, then break them down into
groups. Hopefully getting enough gift cards to make 3 groups of prizes, with each group having a value of several
hundred dollars. For instance, each group of cards could consist of 2 tickets each for a play, a movie. Gift cards for
dinner, lunch, breakfast. Then gift cards for pizza, bagels, donuts…Maybe dry cleaning, the garden center,
manicure, hair cut thrown in. I will email a letter to you, to use when asking for the donation.
All of the gift cards must be turned in by the July 10 business meeting. After we group them, we will sell chances,
more on that to follow. We will have the rest of July, all of August & September to sell the chances, with the winners
being chosen at our October 2nd meeting. All ticket purchasers are invited to attend the meeting,
but need not be there to win.
At this time please do your best to collect the gift cards, or free tickets for us. Write to companies for free tickets to
their summer fun attraction. Offer to match a gift card from your favorite restaurant, if they donate a $20. Card ,
you donate another $20, to make it a $40. Card.
Contact me if you have any other ideas of places to get a card. Thank you. Hopefully when we get to the ticket
selling, we have some great prizes to offer. We can’t do this without you. Angela
