Mount Edgecombe Private School
Thus far, 2019 has been a good year. We are proud to have accepted new learners into the MEPS family, in-creasing our school enrol-ment. We hope that our new learners have adjusted well. In addition to the new learners, we also welcome the new educators to our family. We hope that your tenure at MEPS is fulfilling. Remaining on the subject of staffing, our 10 year loyal service award was recently awarded to Mrs V Naidoo, Mrs K.T Moodley, Mrs A.Maharaj, Mrs R Motilall, Mrs V.Chettiar, Mr K Majozi, Mr J Magwaza, Mrs S Gov-ender and Mrs T Singh. In addition, Mrs KT Moodley has been appointed a Senior Educator. We wish her well and congratulate her on this appointment. Our Grade 11 and 12 Prefects for 2019 have been inducted and have taken their pledge. Our head boy, Keanan Pillai, and head girl, Tekayha Sukuram, are both Grade 12 learners. We sin-
cerely hope that our younger learners are inspired by these MEPS leaders and endeavour to follow in their foot-steps. Various talks have been held at school for our learners. The vocational talks for Grades 9 - 12 from Damelin, Varsity College and University of Pretoria talks were enlightening and were con-ducted in the hopes that our learners give more serious thought to their intended careers. Our Grade 5 and 6 female learners were also visited by a representative from “Always” who pro-vided our learners with health care information. Our learners in Grade 10, 11 and 12 have attended Holiday Intervention clas-ses during the 18 - 22 March. Weekday and Sat-urday Intervention classes for Grades 4 - 12 will once again commence from the 2nd term. Note that inter-
vention classes are spe-cifically designed to improve learner perfor-mance and we strongly urge all parents and learners to take ad-vantage of this oppor-tunity. We wish our learners every success for the remainder of the year and in preparing for their final exams at the end of the year.

shall be laid in the field. No amount of reading from books can make up for a practical knowledge gained by looking at the earth which the child is studying.”

With their heart-healthy unsaturated fat and
dietary fibre, nuts make a healthful addition to
your diet. Nut consumption aids in weight
management, combats type 2 diabetes and re-
duces your risk of stroke, explains the Linus
Pauling Institute. Nuts also support brain func-

you concentrate.

The MEPS Master Chef Cook off 2019 was the
first team building exercise for the new year held on the 15 February 2019. This was a great
way for learners and educators to start the new
year. It gave new learners and educators the op-portunity and the forum to get to know each
other including the rest of the MEPS family and
for the returning educators and learners, it is always a great opportunity of having fun to-
gether. Furthermore team building exercise will assist mums and dads to prepare simple, nutri-
tious and tasty meals, requiring quick prepara-
tion time at home. This makes healthy lunches as well. These recipes will be published in the
MEPS cook-book.
Rocking future is an established career expo that has been interacting with SA schools for 15 years, bringing fun edu-entertainment to Matric Learners in more than 250 schools in South Africa. This expo provided an interactive and informative session to our Grade 11/12 learners on Wednesday, 22 May 2019. This creative expo encouraged our learners to attend private tertiary institutions and provided learners with the information they need to make cru-cial decisions about their future, after they leave school. The Rocking Future Roadshow inspired and motivated our learners

Mr Yugen Moodley, the Managing Partner of KPMG-KZN gave an informative talk on Ac-counting as a career. Heartfelt gratitude to Ms A Maharaj for co-ordinating this inspiring and motiva-tional experience. This programme surely will assist our learners to make informed decisions in their career paths, enabling them to strive towards optimum potential. 1. Kids do better in school when parents are involved in their academic lives.
2. Attending parent-teacher conference is another way of staying informed.
3. Meeting with the teachers also lets your child know that what goes on in school will be shared at
home.
4. Keep in mind that parents or guardians can request meetings with teachers, H.O.D’S and the Prin-cipal’s through the administration office with prior arrangement.
5. Help by creating an effective study environment. Any well-lit, comfortable and quiet workspace
with the necessary facilities will do. Avoiding distractions (like a TV in the background) set-
ting up a start and end time can also help.
6. While your child does homework, be available to interpret assignment instructions, offer guidance, answer questions, and review the completed work. However, resist the urge to provide the correct
answers or complete the assignments yourself. Learning from mistakes is part of the process and
you don’t want to take this away from your child.
7. It's important to have a consistent bedtime routine, especially on school nights. Be sure to leave enough time before bed to allow your child to unwind before lights out and limit stimulating di-versions like TV, video games, and Internet access.
8. Talk to your child about keeping his or her school desk orderly so papers that need to come home don't get lost. Teach your child how to use a calendar or personal planner to help stay or-ganized.
9. Be sure to know when a test is scheduled so you can help your child study ahead of time rather than just the night before. You also might need to remind your child to bring home the right study materials, such as notes, study guides, or books.
10. Currently schools are featuring in the news for major discipline problems eg fighting, use of weapons, drug abuse etc.
11. We at MEPS aim to ensure that your child/ward is in a safe discipline environment. We will strive to ensure that our campus is drug free, weapon free and free of any form of prohibited ac-tivities.
12. If any learner breaks the school rules then the appropriate process will be followed and action implemented. Please refer to our school rules.
13. MEPS has 24 hr Security in order to promote a safe conducive learning environment. 14. We at MEPS are in the process of constructing a fence to further safeguard our children at
school. 15. Role of parents in learner discipline - Parents also need to play a vital role in the discipline of
their children. If any learner contravenes the rules in the Code of Conduct, the school reserves the right to issue the necessary sanctions and parents will need to sign a letter of commitment. Repeated offenders and those who commit serious offences could face non-readmission to the school.
16. Parents should monitor and ensure that learners comply with all MEPS Information Booklets as updated from time to time.
It's important for your child to know what's expected at school. Parents must support the school when disciplinary expectations aren't met. It's easiest for students when school expectations match
the ones at home, so kids see both environments as safe and caring places that work together as a
team.
NB – MEPS Information Booklet is on our website.
Grade 3 - A Day in a Life of an Insect Our Grade 3 learners enjoys an educational assessment on A
Day in a Life of an Insect. Learners had to choose an insect and
share facts about their chosen insect
handle their final NSC exami-
nations. Stop procrastinating and en-
sure you have a study time-
table which you are following. Don’t leave studying for the
last minute. It does not work!
Planning in advance is the key
to success. Remember proper
planning prevents poor perfor-mance
Follow a balanced lifestyle
Part of pressure of being a matricu-lant is being told by everyone how
important your matric exams are,
while at the same time having to make major decisions around your
future education and career.
Anxiety and stress levels are likely to be higher during this year and if it
is not managed properly, it might be a recipe for disaster.
A few strategies to help reduce stress
and anxiety that may help learners manage and be better equipped to
Engage yourself in physical exer-
cise, recreation and relaxation activities. Eat healthy and reduce
the amount of sugary foods which
may cause fatigue.Lastly moti-vate yourself daily .It begins with
you! Always be optimistic. Re-
member you are the maker of your own destiny.
