For assistance with problems or difficulties while using
FAFSA on the Web, or for specific questions about the
FAFSA, call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-aid (1-800-433-3243) or 1-319-337-5665. If
you are hearing-impaired and have questions, contact the
TTY line at 1-800-730-8913.
Please remember to complete your FAFSA each year in early
January if possible. However, you must have your tax return from
the previous year, depending on which FAFSA application you are completing. Many institutions award grants (free monies) to
students who apply early, so don’t delay. Also, check out the Web
site www.Fafsa4caster.ed.gov for additional assistance
with completing your application and finding scholarship

The TRiO Program and staff have helped me to become what I’m capable
of becoming. Through my faith, I have been inspired to do more, learn
better, and help others achieve their goals and achievements.
Ms. Turpin-Peek, Director &
Christopher Marry, Student
I would like to extend a special thanks to Ms. Beatrice Turpin-Peek and all
of the staff at Cocoa Campus’s TRiO-Student Support Services. TRiO-
Student Support Services is a great program that helps students while on
their journey toward academic success. I have been a student at Brevard
Community College since spring 2010, and TRiO has helped me every step
of the way. As we all know, college can be stressful, especially while
working full-time and dealing with the many obstacles that life brings
along the way. TRiO’s services are helping students like me every day to
achieve success through academic advisement, tutorial support, mentoring,
supplemental grant aid, etc. In the fall of 2010, I had an English teacher
who had an odd teaching style. He used reverse psychology to get the most
out of his students. By mid-semester, I was stressed and ready to withdraw
from the class, so I headed to the TRiO building. When I arrived and told
Ms. Turpin-Peek of my plans, she didn’t withdraw me from the class, but
instead encouraged me to push harder. She told me the only way to achieve
educational success was to push through hard times and continue to work
hard even when things looked badly. I finished that semester with a high A
in my English class thanks to the encouragement of TRiO Support
Services. I’m currently on the Dean’s List with a 3.33 GPA, and I only
have 24 more credit hours left to graduate. I can honestly say I have
worked hard to get here, but the staff at TRiO Student Support Services
saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself and showed me how to
bring it out.

Daniel Scott: “My Travel Bug to China” Traveling has always been in
my blood. As a child, I
dreamed of visiting faraway
lands and experiencing new
cultures. I have had a fascination with China for as
long as I can remember.
Growing up, it was my ideal
runaway destination from
life’s challenges. Travel was
always a luxury just out of my
reach until I got the travel bug
and just went for it.
My first experience in
China was an eye-opening
one. At 7 A.M., I flew from
Orlando to Detroit, then onward to Hong Kong. The
flights were a combined 22
hours with only an hour
layover. I found myself
through customs and
immigration by 8 P.M. the
following day. I slept in the
airport and began my journey
the next morning. From the first day to the end of the trip
one month later, I found
China to be filled with new
sights, sounds, and
experiences. The plan of
travel was to enter Hong
Kong and cross into China. I
traveled three thousand miles
into China and stayed in
Guangzhou, Guilin, and
Yangzhou. I then reversed
my path and exited out of Hong Kong.
The highlight of my trip
was in Hong Kong. I stayed
at a hostel in a building called
the Chungking Mansions. This
building houses over four
thousand people from over 120
countries when it locks its doors
at night. It is truly a cross-section of human culture. It has
a large population of Christians,
Muslims, and Hindi all getting
along in the name of business. I
was lucky enough to have lunch
with an Imam, which is an
Islamic leader. We discussed
many things ranging from the
city of Hong Kong and China to
9/11. I also met with a man and
his family who were from
Nepal; they left their country to start a new life. There was little
opportunity for him in his
native country. He left for the
big city and found himself in
Hong Kong with no plan or
resources, but thought he was
better off than in Nepal.
In conclusion, travel has
always been on my agenda, but it never materialized until
I finally took the plunge. I
traveled off the beaten path to
expose myself to different
cultures. Experiencing new
cultures shapes the soul and
allows for a vastly different
worldview. I found that most
people share the same dreams
as we do in America, and that
the world is smaller than I
thought. Now that I am back, people ask me why would I
go to China. I smile and tell
them, “The world is yours.
Live in it!”
