These students wereselected for their balance of passion and commitment to theCreative Industries and we look forward to seeing them developas leaders in this incredible role. A big thank you to our outgoingCI captains for 2018/2019 Via P and Emma M for the work theydid advocating for the Creative Industries.

Rocking Out at Mountain Creek State HighSchool

One of our key school priorities in 2019 is to improve studentperformance, with a focus on boys. The Creative Industries isvery proud to share with you the winners of our 2019 GuitarBursaries. These students, who also happen to be boys, demonstrated a skill in guitar and a willingness to take their skillsfurther through lessons with our guitar teacher Andy Eastwood. They each receive funds towards guitar lessons for Semester 2of this year. There is so much research to support that whenstudents engage with music, they perform better academically. We wish these students all the very best with their lessonsthis year. Congratulations Luke M (Year 11), Hemi M (Year 11),Matty M (Year 9), Ryan V (Year 8) and Matthew M (Year 7).

Since Andy Eastwood joined the team at the beginning of2019, he has increased his days from one to two due to highdemand. In addition to running group and private guitar lessonson Thursdays and Fridays, he also runs three rock bands at theCreek. Stay tuned for some hits from senior bands Lonesomeand Grain and Junior Secondary band The Raw Prawns. Welook forward to seeing some of them perform later in the year!

If you are interested in learning the guitar, we offer privatelessons at $30 each or group lessons at $20 each for a halfhour lesson. Pop in to see Andy on Thursdays or Fridays inthe Music Block for more information about how it all works!

International Baccalaureate Update

IB Chemistry Students Make the Most of USCFacilities Through the ‘Keeping it Local’Partnership

Year 11 and 12 International Baccalaureate Chemistry studentsparticipated in unique learning opportunities at the University ofthe Sunshine Coast last week as part of the ‘keeping it local’partnership between Mountain Creek State High School and

the University. The students engaged with a multi-million dollarimmersive learning environment called the CAVETM whichbrought molecular models to life through animations of complexorganic reaction pathways. The students were able toexperience the molecular models in a 3D setting to highlightthe complex interactions between sub-atomic particles ofneighbouring molecules.

Some of the students commented:

‘The CAVETM lesson looks surreal, and very immersive.A great learning tool’.

‘The CAVE was very helpful in understanding chemicalreactions and molecule structures.’

‘The CAVE lesson was interesting and made me morefascinated with chemistry. Seeing animations rather thandiagrams was very effective.’

The students were also lucky enough to partake in a spectralanalysis session with senior Chemistry Lecturer at USC DrPeter Brooks. Dr Brooks illuminated the students as to howspectroscopic analysis using HMNR and Mass Spectroscopymachines is vital to identify the building blocks of complicatedorganic molecules, and thus analyse samples. The studentswere also given a crash course in the composite nature ofhoney by PhD student Simon Williams as he enlightened thestudents with his research project and the impact it may haveon the honey industry.

To conclude the excursion, students experimented withluminol, a chemiluminescent molecule which glows whenexposed to an oxidising agent like hydrogen peroxide. Thestudents made the most of the expansive and specializedUniversity laboratories to perform multiple luminol reactions, togain insight into this fascinating phenomenon.

Participants commented;

‘The Luminol experiment was excellent, and thescientists were super friendly. This made the experiencevery welcoming, and a great indicator of the greatresources and support students such as myself can findat USC’

‘The Luminol experiment was so fun, wish we could haveperformed more reactions.’

This opportunity would not have been achievable without thehard work from the following people; Judith Warmerdam(Associate Lecturer USC) , Simon Orsborn ( Senior CreativeDesigner USC), Patrea Andersen (Academic Director forSimulation and Visualisation), Dr Peter Brooks (Senior LecturerBiological Chemistry), Simon Williams (PhD student USC), ChrisBuswell ( Senior Science/STEM teacher, HOT Coach MountainCreek State High School), Emma Hodkinson (Senior Science/Maths Teacher Mountain Creek State High School).

ToK in July

As we approach the final submissions for the Year 12assessment, I have been personally challenged to face the endof 2019 and saying farewell to these amazing young people.

The IB programme is a choice. It is an absolute, focussedcommitment on the behalf of students.

In the words of Robert Frost’ poem - ‘The Road not Taken’: Itook the one less travelled, and that has made all the difference.

So at this time of year it is particularly clear that we are down toour last class sessions together. In true ToK form, the Way ofKnowing – emotion is in full swing.

The clip for this month is about grief. BJ Miller MD - ‘Grief isn’ta pathology. It is an altered state of mind’. On ‘BigThink’, heclarifies grief as an important emotional process.

https://bigthink.com/videos/grief

So now that I have dabbled in my nostalgia and thoughts ofour shared journey over the past several years – it is clearhow important grief is as a process and recommend that weremember how important our connections are, the hard workand the extraordinary experiences that have been had.Students continue to embrace the upcoming changes, appreciate the opportunities, friendships and experiences andwalk into your final assessments with a clear mind and strongsense of achievement.

Enjoy!

The Value of History

As we progress closer to ECP on the August 20th and subjectselections for 2020, please take time to look at the infographicthat details the value of taking a History course. Students ofAncient, Modern or IB History at Mountain Creek are allexposed to the values shown here, which gives those students21st Century skills and allows them to become lifelong learners.

Year 11 Geography Excursion – Creation ofSuccessful Places

With some of the best beaches in the world and pristine naturalenvironments, it is often difficult to leave this beautiful placefor a holiday. However, as population density increases openspaces are increasingly becoming areas of vital importance tothe liveability, quality and sustainability of our region. The Year11 Geography students went to Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley toinvestigate the different aspects that make up a successfulpublic space.

The intent of the excursion was to see how public spacesare utilised in an inner city environment. With Fortitude Valleyholding many interesting areas, it was quite an eye openerfor some of the students in comparison to where they live.Collecting field data, which investigated people counts, trafficcounts, streetscape surveys, crime prevention surveys, wayfinding systems students were asked to complete a fieldreport which then suggested mechanisms that could be usedto help improve the urban design of the area, thereby making aplace that can be enjoyed by people.

With the development of the new Maroochydore CBD, thecreation of public spaces is of increasing importance to thesustainability and liveability of our region. Will the developmentof the new urban areas and public spaces on the coast matchthe quality of our magnificent natural environment?
