October 6 From the Great Fathers From The Pastoral Guide by Pope St. Gregory the Great. A spiritual guide should be silent when discretion requires and speak when words are of service. Otherwise he may say what he should not or be silent when he should speak. Indiscreet speech may lead men into error and an im- prudent silence may leave in error those who could have been taught. Pastors who lack foresight hesitate to say openly what is right because they fear losing the favour of men. As the voice of truth tells us, such leaders are not zealous pastors who protect their flocks, rather they are like mercenaries who flee by taking refuge in silence when the wolf appears. The Lord reproaches them through the prophet: They are dumb dogs that can- not bark. On another occasion he complains: You did not advance against the foe or set up a wall in front of the house of Israel, so that you might stand fast in battle on the day of the Lord. To advance against the foe involves a bold re- sistance to the powers of this world in defence of the flock. To stand fast in bat- tle on the day of the Lord means to oppose the wicked enemy out of love for what is right. The Rosary & the Liturgical Year

The Rosary had its origin in the liturgical mentality of former ages. Even at the present time it is called "Mary's Psalter." There still are Catholics who consider the 150 Hail Marys a substitute for the 150 psalms for those persons who neither have the time, the education, nor the opportunity to pray the Hours of the Divine Of-fice. Thus "Mary's Psalter" is a shortened, simplified "breviary" — alongside the common Hour-prayer of the Church. —

The Church's Year of Grace, Dr. Pius Parsch The Rosary is Christocentric, setting forth the entire life of Jesus Christ, the pas-sion, death, resurrection and glory. Of course, the Rosary honors and contem-plates Mary too, and rightly so, [as] the Liturgical Year does:

"Because of the mission she received from God, her life is most closely linked with the mysteries of Jesus Christ, and there is no one who has followed in the footsteps of the Incarnate Word more closely and with more merit than she (Mediator Dei). Meditation on this cycle of Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and Lumi-nous Mysteries makes the Rosary not only "a breviary or summary of the Gospel and of Christian lie,” but also a compendium of the Liturgical Year.

Therewith the Rosary stands revealed as a dynamic teacher and nurturer of Christian faith, morality, and spiritual perfection, fostering in various ways faith, hope, charity, and the other virtues, and mediating special graces, all to the end that we may become more and more like unto Christ..

Lighthouse Talk of the Week Saints for Sinners by Archbishop Alban Goodier Learning about the lives of the Saints is a great way to deepen our love of God and recommit us to His service. We see how the Lord works in the lives of ordinary people, helping us to conquer sin. In this CD, the lives of these Saints testify to the truth of God's transforming love in those who are willing to surrender their lives to Him. These are the sto-ries of St. Augustine of Hippo and St. Margaret of Cortona. Parishioner Comments - "It's encouraging to see how pow-erfully the grace of God can change a person's life! It gives me hope in my own quest for sanctity.” The Augustine Institute/ Lighthouse kiosk will be located in the hall of the FLC A&B during construction.

Our parish contingent raised over $ 9,000! Thank you for supporting this initiative. A special thanks goes to Sylvia Valdez for her encouragement. Forty Days for Life Our parish day is Saturday, November 2nd! We invite you to sign up and give one hour or more to pray outside of Planned Parenthood from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Let’s re-member that prayer and fasting are powerful spiritual weapons in the fight for greater protection for the unborn. Continued from front page… When a pastor has been afraid to assert what is right, has he not turned his back and fled by remaining si-lent? Whereas if he intervenes on behalf of the flock, he sets up a wall against the enemy in front of the house of Israel. Therefore, the Lord again says to his unfaithful people: Your prophets saw false and foolish visions and did not point out your wickedness, that you might repent of your sins. The name of the prophet is sometimes given in the sacred writings to teachers who both declare the present to be fleeting and re-veal what is to come. The word of God accuses them of seeing false visions because they are afraid to re-proach men for their faults and they consequently lull the evildoer with an empty promise of safety. Because they fear reproach, they keep silent and fail to point out the sinner’s wrongdoing. The word of reproach is a key that unlocks a door, be-cause reproach reveals a fault of which the evildoer is himself often unaware. That is why Paul says of the bishop: He must be able to encourage men in sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. For the same reason God tells us through Malachi: The lips of the priest are to preserve knowledge, and men shall look to him for the law, for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts. Finally, that is also the reason why the Lord warns us through Isaiah: Cry out and be not still; raise your voice in a trumpet call. Anyone ordained a priest undertakes the task of preaching, so that with a loud cry he may go on ahead of the terrible judge who follows. If, then, a priest does not know how to preach, what kind of cry can such a dumb herald utter? It was to bring this home that the Holy Spirit descended in the form of tongues on the first pastors, for he causes those whom he has filled, to speak out spontaneously.

Sr. Cathryn Frassati Ivy Tran is a mem-ber of the Dominican Sisters of Mary Immaculate here in Houston. The apostolate of her community is teach-ing and religious formation.

This could be you! Is the Lord calling you to the religious life as a sister or brother? Perhaps to the priesthood of Jesus Christ? HoustonVocations.com

How to go to Confession

In order to make a good confession, we examine our conscience, asking God’s help to know our sins and to be truly sorry for them.

R i te of Reconci l iat ion

Priest: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Penitent: Amen. Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (say how long) since my last confession. My sins are (confess your sins). When you are done, the priest will give you spiritu-al advice and assign a penance. He will then ask you to pray an Act of Contrition, for example: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

- or- O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they have offended Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve wit the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen. The Priest then says the Prayer of Absolution while the penitent listens. At the conclusion of the pray-er, make the sign of the Cross and say, “Amen.” Priest: Go in peace Penitent: Thanks be to God Complete your penance as soon as possible. If you were given prayers to say, try to pray them in church before departing.

Pasos básicos para confesarse

Entra al confesionario sin miedo, confiando en la misericordia de Jesús: Penitente: Ave María Purísima Sacerdote: Sin pecado concebida. Penitente: Bendígame padre porque he pe cado.

St. Denis October 9 This martyr and patron of France is regarded as the first bishop of Paris. His populari-ty is due to a series of legends, especially those connecting him with the great ab-bey church of St. Denis in Paris. He was for a time confused with the writer now called Pseudo-Dionysius. The best hypothesis contends that Denis was sent to Gaul from Rome in the third century and beheaded in the persecution under Emperor Valerius in 258. According to one of the legends, after he was martyred on Montmartre—literally, “mountain of martyrs”—in Paris, he carried his head to a village northeast of the city. Saint Genevieve built a basilica over his tomb at the beginning of the sixth century. In St. Denis, we have the case of a saint about whom almost nothing is known, yet one to whom devotion has been a vigorous part of the Church’s history for centu-ries. We can only conclude that the deep impression the saint made on the people of his day reflected a life of unusual holiness. In all such cases, there are two fundamental facts: A great man gave his life for Christ, and the Church has never forgotten him—a human symbol of God’s eternal mindfulness.
