Cedarwood Preparatory From the Headmistress 12 February 2014 Weekly Newsletter Dear Parents We are very proud to be announcing our 2014 student leadership team at assembly next Monday 17th February. Grade 6 pupils are selected by the staff body on various criteria, ranging from positive role modelling, enthusiastic participation and commitment in all aspects of the school arena, good organisational skills and obviously being a safe, responsible and respectful ambassador for Cedarwood Prep. The chosen group, comprising a Captain, Vice-Captain and three monitors per house, will take responsibility for their house, both on the sports field and generally within the ambit of the school day. Indira Gandhi once said “I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people”. The leadership team will be mentored by the Heads of House, (Mrs Pat Bowden—Leopards; Mrs Ann Alexander—Tigers and Mrs Carlie Grobler—Lions) the Grade 6 class teachers (Mrs Mel Artingsall and Mr Justin Barry / Mrs Shannon Jacobs), as well as Coach Oliver. This Friday is Valentine’s Day, and we will be celebrating this lovely event with a Civvies day. Pupils may come to school dressed in Valentines colours and we request that they pay R10 for this privilege – the proceeds of which will be donated to the SPCA. Dear Parents

We are very proud to be announcing our 2014 student leadership team at assembly next Monday 17th February.

We are targeting a new behaviour this week in our PBIS journey. “No name calling” is the focussed behaviour and we encourage you to follow up with this at home. Try and “catch” your child saying something positive and reward them for this, rather than being negative.

From the Sports Desk

I am sure that most of us have forgo en all about the holidays already. In other words, we have moved back into the swing of things at Cedarwood. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, may I request that, as parents, you speak to your children about the importance of commitment as well as taking their responsibili es seriously? The majority of pupils have not mastered the fact that they have to excuse themselves if they will not be a ending prac ce sessions of any ac vity on the extra murals curricular. In addi on, and more importantly, when a child is selected to represent the school in a par cular sport, we request that the le er advising of their selec on be sent back regardless of whether they are par cipa ng or not. This is important as it helps the coaches to ‘make a plan’ and advise those on standby. Furthermore, kindly advise the children to return the replies slips meously for the same reasons. Now to the more interes ng part of my job! Last week was busy on the spor ng side of things at Cedarwood. The so ball match that had been scheduled to be played against Orion College at Cedarwood, had to be cancelled as the whole field was under water. On Wednesday, the cricket match went ahead as planned and we beat Orion College convincingly. We would like to pay tribute to all our senior cricket players for playing their hearts out! On Friday, we had two fixtures, both of which were hosted at Cedarwood. Firstly, the young cricketers had a date with Orion College and what a match it was! A er a hotly contested match, we played the good hosts and let the visitors win the match with a slight margin. Bearing in mind that the majority of our players were playing for the first me. The swimming gala which was scheduled to start at 2 pm was delayed due to the third school par cipa ng in the gala got lost on the way to Cedarwood (and never managed to arrive). In the end, we swam only our team and Orion College. If Orion College expected the mercy that they had been shown by the mini cricket team, they were in for a big surprise as we cruised through to a well‐deserved victory. On Monday, we travelled to Northsands to face off with that school in a so ball match. Despite the fact that most of our players last year were in Grade six and have since moved on to high school, we played extremely well and dominated the match from the start, cruising to an easy victory of 15‐9. Well done to everyone!

A Teacher for All Seasons

A teacher is like Spring, Who nurtures new green sprouts, Encourages and leads them, Whenever they have doubts.

A teacher is like Summer, Whose sunny temperament Makes studying a pleasure, Preventing discontent.

A teacher is like Fall, With methods crisp and clear, Lessons of bright colours And a happy atmosphere.

A teacher is like Winter, While it’s snowing hard outside, Keeping students comfortable, As a warm and helpful guide.

Teacher, you do all these things, With a pleasant attitude; You’re a teacher for all seasons And you have my gratitude!

Joanna Fuchs

Teachers

Teachers are dedicated, to our education. This is their passion, and our liberation.

Their sincere kindness, warm feelings, it brings. They guide and protect us, under their wings.

They show us patience, and readily spread. Their helpful advice, fills us like bread.

They don’t just instruct, but encourage and believe, That there’s nothing out there, we cannot achieve.

They think about, our future all the time. Work tirelessly to direct us, away from conflicts and crime.

At the end of the day, teachers do understand, it takes both tools and love, for our young minds to expand.

PBIS—PLAYGROUNDGAMESAs part of our school drive of ‘Posi ve Behavioural Interven on and Support’, it has come to our

a en on that many children do not know how to play tradi onal playground games. As parents,

you can help at home, and we will feature various ideas for the next few weeks for your

convenience.

Drawing with chalk will work

just as well...

One set of blocks from 1—10 is all

you need...

Don’t need to be quite so precise, foot size is fine...
