Issue#38

The concept of a trial involves an opportunity to ‘try something out’ without finality or summative judgement being made and this is exactly what our Matrics are doing: they are writing their Trial Examinations in preparation for the Final IEB Senior Certificate Examinations in October. Academics is our core business and the Matrics have been preparing in earnest for these examinations. We wish them well.

The Grade 11 girls will also have their sights set on the year-end examinations as these results gain them provisional acceptance into the universities they’d like to attend and so there is some pressure with regard to their performance therein. Right now, though, the Grade 11 dance is providing some much-needed focus of a more social kind, and that too, is an important part of each girl’s unique educational journey.

The Senior Primary has kindly widened their traditional Speaker’s Corner to include our whole school community (and neighbouring schools) to listen to Diane Pickford’s powerful and important Screen Addiction talk. This comes highly recommended and we invite you to join us.

In keeping with the subject of academics, and of thought leadership, the Junior Primary staff hosted “Just JP”, an initiative started by Durban Girls’ College which sees teachers from between 12 to 14 schools collaborating around major aspects of pedagogy and 21st Century education. This past week the focus was creativity and more than 60 teachers from Gr R to Grade 3 attended the exciting workshop-based presentation, led by Mrs Carol-Anne Conradie. It was a wonderfully successful day in which teachers were engaged in their shared focus and passion for teaching in this critical foundational phase where a relationship with learning is established.

The rapidly evolving educational space (in response to an increasingly digital and automated world and globalisation) means that we are all learning every day; and that’s how it should be: an educational journey in which life-long learning enriches and grows us; challenges and redirects us to become more informed, adaptive, collaborative and engaged human beings.

Grade 00 had a lovely sensory treasure hunt. The girls had to find 6 objects buried in a variety of textures. The slime and spaghetti were definitely a favourite.

Khatija Osman, won the ISPA Mobile Tech Teacher 2018 award, which is an impressive achievement considering she is a teaching intern in our Senior Primary. The ISPA’s (Internet Service Providers’ Association) Train the Teacher project has equipped over 5000 teachers with ICT skills. Khatija introduced Vlogging (video blogging) on Flipgrid to her lessons during teaching practice. Not only does Vlogging take lesson planning to a whole new level, it also keeps learners ‘thinking active’ and engaged in learning. It allows for a much deeper understanding of how learners are thinking and processing information. Khatija is a 4th year student studying Educational Psychology through UNISA and she has a great understanding of learners with different learning needs. Her husband is an Accountant at Natal Sharks Rugby and she has 2 sons and a daughter. Khatija says her intership at College has helped her to grow in every aspect of her life.

Meet our Staff

The SP SCA theme for this term is Rooted! which speaks to commitment to faith and how that plays out in real life. We’ve journeyed through several bible passages which use this image of a healthy, beautiful tree to describe the importance of spiritual nourishment. This results in groundedness, wisdom, hope and peace. In all the striving of school life, and life in general, toward achievements in academics, sport and cultural pursuits, it’s important to make time to nourish the soul… to be like that strong tree which shelters others in its branches, able to do so because it is well watered and leans on strong roots. May this be food for thought for our growing girls.

From Our ChaplainJesus said, “I am the vine, and you are the branches…”
