November/December 2010

From the King Lions DeskThe Christmas Part at Kaufman’s in Gambrills, MD was my last offi-cial function as your King Lion.

As circumstances happened, my decision to retire early was modi-fied, and I have decided to retire approximately six months earlierthan expected. The major factor in this decision was the loss of agovernment contract, and it would have been hard to take a posi-tion, knowing that it was only going to be for a short period, espe-cially with the job market as it is.

I have enjoyed being your King Lion, and I have to say that thecamaraderie and friendships I have developed during my mem-bership have been an experience that I will always cherish. I amproud to be a member of the Severn River Lions Club. I will con-tinue my membership as an affiliate member, and look forward tojoining you for dinner when my travels bring me back to this area.

My retirement will be “UP NORTH” in Michigan, in the little town ofCharlevoix. I have made contact with the Lions Club and willbecome a member there. (They are a business orientated club, meeting exactly one hour every Monday at 12PM sharp). Theirfundraiser is selling Christmas Trees which is how I meet a few oftheir members.

I leave the club in good hands, with Rolins Clark stepping in asKing Lion. I expect to hear great things, and know that you all willcontinue to grow and expand the Lions Motto of “We Serve”.

I will provide Lion Dick Mauer with my address and contact infor-mation for future correspondence.

I wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year.

Strike Up The Bands

Saturday, October 2 was a brisk fall day but per-fect for the 32nd Tournament of Bands atSeverna Park High School. Sixteen bands fromMaryland began arriving in mid-afternoon forthis mega event. The crowds filled the stadiumand promptly at 5:00 pm the SPHS FalconMarching Band, under the direction of R.Thomas Powell, the director since 1968, took thefield to play the National Anthem to begin theevening. Following the opening the bands infour categories based on size and experiencestepped on the field for what promised to be arousing evening of lively music, colorful outfits, and energetic marching. During each perform-ance five judges moved among the marchersand taped a critique which would be given tothe directors for follow up. Five judges in theaudience evaluated the band’s performance invisual, individual and ensemble music profi-ciency, visual effect, and musical effect. Thebands ranged in size from two dozen perform-ers to large groups with over seventy members.About half the bands were “repeat performers”who had participated in TOB in past years.

Working behind the scenes but visible were theband parents who assisted with setting up andremoving the band equipment before and aftera band’s performance on the field. Their effortscontributed to each band’s success and awardsshould have been given to the band boostersand parents for their contribution.

At half time the patrons were treated to a stellarperformance by the SPHS Alumni MarchingBand. Started about five years ago, the alumniband numbers nearly 120 members who trav-

eled from at least seven different states and oneforeign country to perform at the TOB. Their stir-ring rendition of Sousa’s “Stars and StripesForever” brought a round of applause from anappreciative audience. Alumni band membersrepresented most graduating classes with theoldest from the Class of 1967 and the mostrecent from the Class of 2010.

For at least twenty years the Severn River LionsClub has provided the trophies that were pre-sented. King Lion Trent Kutsch and Lion OllieWittig were privileged to attend and be able topresent trophies to the winning bands thatevening. In recognition of SRLC’s long termsponsorship the TOB souvenir program con-tained a full page recognizing the club’s contri-bution and publicizing our citrus sales. If youhave never attended a Tournament of Bandsevent mark your calendar for the first Saturdayin October and come out for an evening ofmarching band excellence.

For several weeks prior to the annual KinderFarm Park Fall Festival on October 9, 2010, LionDick Maurer began planning to insure anothersuccessful event. Planning included a menu ofdelicious Ostrowski Italian sausage, hot dogs,French fries, fried shrimp; Lions helpers to setup and man the cooking, serving, and salesareas; obtaining health permits; inventoryingthe equipment and supplies needed; and shop-ping for the commodities. Chief Chef andOrganizer Dick did another superb job with thisevent and deserves credit for making it a greatsuccess.

Lions began arriving at Kinder Farm Park in themorning to set up the tents, ready the grills andfryers, hang signs, and get everything ready forthe hungry hordes that would soon arrive. LionGeorge’s large grill was placed and the cookerswere in position to begin preparations for thecooking.

Engineer George Councill brought a “kid mag-net” to the park this year. He assembled a Ggauge railroad on the lot and added the engineand cars which were soon traveling around theoval track to the delight of the dozens of young-sters who came by to watch and enjoy this spe-cial treat.

As the noon hour approached the hungry fair-goers began to line up as the delicious smellsfrom the grill and fryers wafted across the lot totempt the visitors. For nearly four hours theLions, decked out in brightly colored aprons, worked non-stop to keep the food trays filledand the lines moving. Several of the customersexpressed appreciation to SRLC for the commu-nity services and gave Lions the opportunity totell them about our club’s many activities.About 3:00 pm the last Italian sausage, shrimpplatter, and fry boat was sold and the remaining

hot dogs were offered at a discount. The crewbegan the task of shutting down, and storingthe equipment until the next cooking event. Itwas a long and strenuous day but the opportu-nity to collaborate with other Lions on a projectand to acquaint the community with our organ-ization made it worthwhile.

The 2010 Kinder Farm Park Fall Fest was a greatsuccess and helped raise substantial funds tosupport our community projects. Special thanksto Lion Dick Maurer and to all the memberswho volunteered to make this annual event arousing success again this year.

Lions and friends enjoyed fellowship and finger food.

Dale Strait and his daughter.

The second annual Bring A Friend night onOctober 5 was a great opportunity to demon-strate the many worthwhile service activitiesthat are sponsored by the Severn River LionsClub. Various members prepared colorful dis-plays telling about the citrus sales, visionscreening, peace posters at two schools, LEOclubs that we sponsor, highway cleanup alongRitchie Highway, scholarships at Severna Parkand Broadneck High Schools, medical loancloset, and the Lions Quest program in somepublic schools.

The Bring a Friend event replaced a regularmeeting and was planned to be informal andinteractive and intended to acquaint prospec-tive members with our organization’s manyservice activities. The prospects who attendedhad an opportunity to observe and discuss theactivities with Lions and learn about our cluband Lionism. Not surprisingly, several membersstated that for them the evening had been alearning experience. Gathered around the tablethe members and prospects enjoyed a festivebuffet and talked about what they had seen. Wehope and expect to gain several new membersas a result of Bring a Friend night and the eventwill be repeated in Spring 2011.

District Membership Chairman, Daniel Scott, received information about the event and willbe invited to the Spring event.

The annual Severn River Lions Club Christmasparty was held at Kaufman’s Restaurant onDecember 7. Tasty hors d'oeuvres, appetizers, anddrinks were enjoyed as everyone mixed andmingled. Promptly at 7:00 pm KL Trentannounced the start and a semi-traditionalLions opening was held. Soon party goers werewalking through the buffet line for servings ofsalad, sides of vegetables, rice, chicken Marsalla, and rare roast beef. For the past two years the fourth Wednesday ofeach month has been known as “Severn RiverLions Club Night at LEDO Pizza.” Lions join thecrowds there for delicious food and compan-ionship. LEDO has generously contributed aportion of the receipts from those evenings tobenefit many of SRLC’s community projects andto assist a number of other community organi-zations and activities. The club decided that itwas time to give back to LEDO. This year theannual “We Serve” Award was presented to theLEDO owner, Martin Gorman, in recognition ofhis generosity to the Lions Club and theSeverna Park community.

Last year about $30,000 was donated by Mr.Gorman to various community organizationsand the Lions club received over $2,000 to ben-efit our club’s activities. Martin Gorman andbusiness partner, John Connion, were invited tothe club Christmas party on December 7. KingLion Trent presented Martin with an engravedplaque designating his selection as this year’srecipient and Martin graciously accepted theaward and promised to display it prominently

at the eatery. SRLC salutes Martin Gorman forhis generosity and community support and weare looking forward to continuing this positiverelationship. Thanks again Martin and John!

December Fruit SaleBetter Than Last Year

The December 2010 citrus sale was head andshoulders above last year’s in several respects.Who can forget the twenty inches of snow thatclosed the SPHS parking lot, grounded the help-ful forklift, required that the truck be unloadedmanually, required countless telephone calls tocustomers, and took nearly a week to dispensethe fruit orders? This month’s citrus sale was abreeze by comparison. The light dusting ofsnow two days before the sale made for a slickparking lot but twenty nine Lions braved the iceand the frigid pre-dawn temperatures to getready for the big sale fortified by tasty dough-nut holes and warm coffee. Freddy forklift, skill-fully driven by Lion Wayne, off loaded the truckin about forty five minutes. Lions and four SPHSband students skillfully assembled the threebooths. Large orders of citrus were pulled andpalleted for pickup by customers. Cars beganlining up at 8:15 am and King Orange, BillZelenakas announced that we were ready to go.Cars began arriving, passed through the boothsand were directed to the pick up lines by ChrisWerth where the fruit was placed in the vehi-cles. Lions thanked the customers, many ofthem long time buyers, and wished everyone aMerry Christmas. The lines moved steadily allmorning. As the lunch hour approached Lionsand students took breaks for Chef George’slunch and a bowl or two of hot and tasty creamof crab soup. By 1:00 pm there were less thanthree dozen cartons of fruit left on the line. Byclosing time the surplus was to be taken toRhine Jager’s garage to await calls from the “Iforgot my fruit” customers. King Orange Billreported that this year’s sale exceeded lastyear’s and the proceeds will help with the club’smany charitable projects. Special thanks to allthe Lions who served as order takers, boothworkers, line helpers, and food purveyors forcontributing to a successful citrus sale.
