Issue #24 Music, by definion, is the counterpoint between sound and silence, providing commentary to our lives. However, it is so, so much more than this. Music is part of our very being. Issue#24

Music, by definition, is the counterpoint between sound and silence, providing commentary to our lives. However, it is so, so much more than this. Music is part of our very being. Used in almost every religious ritual, as cultural punctuation and political statement, music is about the very fabric of being human.

At College, one just has to pause a moment to listen; music is everywhere: choristers’ voices, marimbas in the Peace Garden, lyrics to a contemporary song being used in a English classroom, djembe drumming in the Junior Primary, all form part of the soundtrack to life. Music is intrinsic to the human species with vocalisations as an infant, or experimentation with the Tupperware or pots and pans inthe family kitchen, beginning the journey. We acknowledge, understand and promote the importance in nurturing this very special expression in educational processes at school, both as an individual pursuit or in ensemble playing (teamwork personified). By so doing, our collective mantra of developing the whole child is realised.

Music allows us to feel affirmed, gives us ‘permission’ to explore every human emotion, but most of all, celebrates the essence of creativity in each one of us.

Wishing you all a music-filled and joyous start to Term Two.

For as long as I can remember, I have participated in music-making in some form or another. I grew up playing the piano, singing in choirs, and acting in school musicals.

I started studying Drama and Psychology, but after two years I left University to embark on a National Diploma in Jazz at what was then Natal Technikon. I absolutely loved the creativity and freedom that came with Jazz and this restored my passion for music. This is also where I met my husband, Andrew. My first job was that of Choir Mistress at Glenwood Boys High school. After a year there, I got married and moved to the Natal Midlands, teaching music at Howick Prep school. When my husband and I decided to start a family, it was the perfect opportunity for me to study again, and it was during this time that I completed my Bachelor of Musicology Degree and Teachers’ Licentiate in Piano. As soon as the children were old enough, I took up a teaching position at St John’s DSG in Pietermaritzburg, and remained there for five very happy years.

In 2016 we moved to Durban and I took up a position as Head of Music at Maris Stella. I decided to take a break in 2017, teaching private piano and singing lessons, but when the opportunity to teach at College presented itself, I simply could not pass it up!!

‘But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!’ Galatians 5:22-23We spoke in assembly on Monday, the first day of the new term, about being fruitful. It seems a good time to recommit to bearing good fruit in our lives, and the girls were encouraged to think carefully about a few characteristics to actively develop during this term. This can be challenging as it requires self-reflection and then a commit-ment to self-development. We asked God to help us to remember that being fruitful isn’t always just about being busy, but also about developing our character. With His help, this is something we can always work on and progress in!

AlumnaDGC Old Girl Marijke van Niekerk works as an advertising creative in Los Angeles, while still maintaining a thriving part-time music career. She says her love of choral singing started at College, where she always sang in the choir, and nowadays you can hear her singing in a number of top Hollywood movies. Her credits include films like “Frozen”, “Sing”, “Transformers: The Last Knight”, one of the “Hangover” movies and the new “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”, to name a few. “When work isn’t too hectic,” she also sings with some renowned orchestras, like the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Pacific Symphony, and she just performed at the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City in April 2018 with Pacific Chorale.

After graduating from College, Marijke got her Bachelor of Music Degree in Film Scoring (Berklee College of Music) and her Master’s Degree in International Relations (University of Nottingham). After working as a radio writer and producer, she moved into advertising where she’s been responsible for coming up with creative campaigns for a number of global brands. “I love my work, but I’ll always need my music to keep me going. And luckily, I’ve been able to land some really fun and inspiring singing gigs along the way that challenge me creatively and make me a better musician.”
