THE EVANGEL: SEPT.-OCT. 2019 FROM THE PASTORS DESK As part of one of my classes this year I wrote a devotion about the Mystics in the Medieval period. I pray you are blessed by its content and thank you for letting me get double benefit from work put in. Devotional Written by Pastor Jason Collier The image of God is found essentially and personally in all mankind. Genesis 1:2627 NASB: 1995 Update This quote by John Ruysbroeck paints for me the truth of the image of God in each of us. There is no argument here. It is just an absolute statement of facts about something that is often debated. As we all know, we are made in the image of God. But does that mean we are wholly gods? As you travel through your day allow yourself to treat everyone you meet as if you were meeting God. Would you treat any one different as you go through your day? Would you greet them differently? The image of God is found essentially and personally in all mankind. Each possesses it whole, entire and undivided, and all together not more than one

alone. In this way we are all one, intimately united in our eternal image, which is the image of God and the source in us of all our life.

John Ruysbroeck

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the

earth.” God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Genesis 1:26–27 NASB: 1995 Update

This quote by John Ruysbroeck paints for me the truth of the image of God in each of us. What are the lengths you would go to make God comfortable? And if you believe we all have God in us, how would you change your day to day?

John Ruysbroeck was born in 1293 in the village of Ruysbroeck near Brussels. He became a priest in 1317, when he was twenty-four. For the next twenty-six years he served as chaplain to the church of St. Gudule in Brussels. During this time, he wrote treaties opposing the heretical teachings of a woman named Bloemardinne. In 1343, he retired to Groenendael in the forest a few miles from the city with two companions to lead a more solitary life. The small group acquired a few more members and became, with the blessings of the local bishop, an official religious community—canons regular of St. Augustine. Ruysbroeck spent the remaining years of his life at Groenendael, where he wrote the most influential of his mystical works. He died December 2, 1381.

This historical work used without permission from: The Blessed John of Ruysbroeck (1293 or 1294 – 2 December 1381), "the Admirable" also known as John Ruusbroec, Jan van Ruusbroec or Jan van Ruysbroeck, was one of the Flemish mystics of the medieval Catholic Church.

BUILDING BRIDGES OUT OF POVERTY Bridges out of Poverty is an initiative with a goal of empowering rather than enabling persons experiencing poverty. The initiative has two components: 1) Educate service providers and businesses whose daily work connects them with the lives of people in poverty. The research-based framework of concepts, tools, and resources equip

people to reconsider how they approach their clients, their constituents, their neighbors, and their community. According to Vern Reed of Ottumwa, a national consultant for Bridges out of Poverty, “they have identified 11 key resources we all need to live a sustainable life with only one being financial.” Reed and his wife, Cindy, say Building Bridges is working to identify these resources for people living in generational poverty in southeast Iowa. 2) Classes for families – adults as well as children in the household – seeking to end generational poverty. Bridges is already established in Des Moines, Henry, Lee, Wapello, and other counties in Iowa as well as other states and countries. This is the second year Wayland has offered “Getting Ahead” classes for families (adults and K-12 children). ACC Mission will be providing a meal.

ACC RECEIVES GRANT FOR BRIDGES TRAINING The ACC Mission Committee received a Washington County Riverboat Foundation mini grant to sponsor a “Building Bridges out of Poverty” training for businesses, organizations, and individuals to identify, and educate Washington County. Ann Freyenberger is coordinating the initiative. At press time, she is near to confirming a Saturday date and location in Washington to host the training. Please check the Ainsworth Church Facebook Page and Website.
