Conference research sessions will encompass band history (with a special emphasis on bands and composers in and around New York City), analysis of masterworks, discovery of repertoire from other continents, and music education. Finally, a number of presentations and dialogues—featuring several prominent thinkers/writers on the arts, the brain, music, music education, athletic bands, engaging our communities, and more—will undoubtedly give us much to talk about and many wonderful ideas to take home! If you’ve not already made note of this conference in your books, INK IT IN, because this is one celebration you won’t want to miss!! Summer is a wonderful season for reflection of all kinds, includ- ing contemplation about what we do as musicians and teachers. Such pondering is crucial to us if we wish to deepen as individu- als and artists. Fortunately, we live and work in a vibrant (though sometimes perilous) time for both education and the arts. Because we serve as mentors for many of the music field’s future performers and teachers, it behooves us to keep up with and take an active role in the ongoing dialogue about the arts and education in our country. As the old cliché, attributed Heraclitus (540-480 BC), aptly states, “nothing endures but change.” Hereafter is food for thought, mostly cultivated from the recent writing of several scholars.

CBDNA 2005 National Conference“A Celebration of the Contemporary Wind Band”

New York City —February 24-27

Dear Colleagues and Friends:

I hope that this fi nds each of you moving toward a well-deserved summer break! Is it just me, or does it seem that every year is busier than the previous?!? In any case, let’s enjoy the opportunity that summer provides to relax, “re-charge,” and grow.

This brief note includes an update on important CBDNA news and a few early-summer musings about our fi eld. As has been the instance with my previous notes for this column, these refl ections are offered with the hope that they might stimulate both thought and dialogue about our collective present and future. By now, it is undoubtedly apparent to you that I believe a dialectic organization is a healthy organization! To all that have taken time to respond to my previous columns, exchanging ideas with other colleagues and with me, I say, “thank you.” First, the news…

Doug Stotter, editor of the Report, has agreed to succeed Pat Hoy as national treasurer of CBDNA. For those who were unable to attend our meeting at Midwest, Pat is stepping down, due to her duties at the University of Memphis. All of us owe Pat an enormous “thanks” for her outstanding contributions to our organization. This summer, the responsibilities of treasurer will gradually be shifted from Pat to Doug. Additionally, a new editor of the Report will be Report will be Reportappointed and will assume editorial duties this fall.

Stuart Sims has agreed to oversee re-construction of the CBDNA website. Hoffman ITS will continue to provide web service to our organization. Together, Stuart and I are working to identify web-savvy members willing to help manage various content areas that will be a vital part of the site in near future. Incidentally, if you are not already using the listserv option (found in the directory area of the website), please take time this summer to sign up and try it out. Exchanging ideas with colleagues interested in the same areas of our profession that you feel passionately about has never been easier!

Plans for the next national conference, “A Celebration of the Contemporary Wind Band” (New York City, February 24-27, 2005), are moving forward. Later this summer, you will receive an e-mail from me outlining the sessions and concerts that will take place during the four days in New York, hotel information, etc. In keeping with the aforementioned theme, conference concerts will include an array of wind band masterworks and newly commissioned works. In The Blank Slate, Steven Pinker argues that “The dominant theories of elite art and criticism in the twentieth century grew out of a militant denial of human nature.” Further, he suggests that the new movements in the arts “combine high and low culture” and include “classically trained musicians who mix classical and popular compositions….” Finally, Pinker proposes that “Ultimately what draws us to a work of art is not just the sensory experience of the medium but its emotional content and insight into the human condition.”

Richard Florida, author of The Rise of the Creative Class, notes that “the Creative Class [a group he defi nes as encompassing ap-proximately 42% of the country’s work force] lifestyle comes down to a passionate quest for experience. And the kinds of expe-riences they crave refl ect and reinforce their identities as creative people…they favor active, participatory recreation over passive spectator sports. They like indigenous street-level culture…where it is hard to draw the line between participant and observer….” Florida goes on to suggest that “Experiences are replacing goods and services because they stimulate our creative faculties and en-hance our creative capacities.”

In The Disciplined Mind, Howard Gardner writes, “Looking The Disciplined Mind, Howard Gardner writes, “Looking The Disciplined Mindbackward across time, and looking with 360-degree perspective, across wide spaces, we can discern important universal aims of education: transmission of values, modeling of roles, mastery of notation and disciplines. The identifi cation of these aims is impor-tant; it is foolish to disregard them as we look ahead to new times and new worlds. However, it is equally myopic to ignore the many enormous changes that are already patent in the world and that will unquestionably affect education and schooling in years to come.” Gardner goes on to note that the forces that have altered and will continue to change education include technological and scientifi c breakthroughs, political trends, economic forces, and the shifting cartography of knowledge (e.g., the rapidity with which informa-tion is disseminated world wide).

Many, including Gardner, Dan Greenberg, and John Taylor Gatto, point out that in order to meet the needs of society in this century, it is essential that education cultivate fl exibility and creativity, pro-mote individual responsibility, and develop communication skills through an emphasis on individualized instruction. Gardner argues that the goals of a comprehensive education should include an in-depth study of virtues: truth, beauty, and good. In speaking about consciousness, Diane Ackerman, author of An Alchemy of the Mind, An Alchemy of the Mind, An Alchemy of the Mindreminds all that “We need the revelations of neuroscience, but also those of psychology, philosophy, and the arts, which have much to teach us about the subjective experience our brain produces.”

It is interesting to consider the implications of the above with regard to the wind band fi eld. What standards do we use to defi ne our great literature? Do we teach for depth? Can we present our music in ways that are likely to engage “creative class” listeners, thereby developing new audiences? Or, given society’s growing penchant for “an experiential lifestyle,” should our focus be on involvement, rather than on audiences? How can a course in band help address the educational needs of tomorrow’s students? Can we individualize instruction and cultivate creative thinking in an ensemble setting? What constitutes a musically educated person?

I invite each of you to mull these issues over as you sit on your deck, fl oat along in your sailboat, and travel the highways. Then, we MUST genuinely engage one another in these and other salient issues! If the wind band is to secure a place in tomorrow’s musical landscape, our discussions about our place in education and the arts must be vigorous and continuous and our conclusions well-founded. In my view, CBDNA’s leadership, both as an organization and through its individual members, is more critical than ever.

With Much Regard,

Gary

Summer '04 NEWS - 5NEWS

After a quarter of a century as Lawrence University's Director of Bands, Robert Levy conducted his fi nal concert on Sat-urday, May 15th at Lawrence University in Wisconsin. The program featured four premiere performances of works including new symphonies by both Lawrence alumni John Harmon ‘57, (For Love of the GameJohn Harmon ‘57, (For Love of the GameJohn Harmon ‘57, ( ) and Marty Robinson ‘87, current student Jonathan Roberts Blessing, and UW-Ste-vens Point composition professor Charles Rochester Young titled Songs Without Words. This latter work was jointly com-missioned by twelve colleges and univer-sities in Wisconsin. John Harmon’s work was conceived especially for Professor Levy’s last concert.

Levy plans to remain in the area “at least for awhile” so he says. His future plans include devoting extensive time to composing, guest conducting, touring and recording, and to ultimately make a documentary fi lm on the life of American composer Alec Wilder, something he has pursued over the past three years. He wants CBDNA members to know he is available and interested in being a sabbatical replace-ment should any members wish to take time off from their current positions. He can be reached at [email protected] or by calling 920-757-0852.

John Cody Birdwell has been named Director of Bands at the University of Kentucky. He joins UK after serving as Director of Bands at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

Gary Schallert has been appointed as Associate Professor of Music and Conduc-tor of the Wind Ensemble at the Belmont University School of Music in Nashville, Tennessee.

A new edition by J. Steven Moore (Colorado State University) of Aegean Festival by Andreas Makris is now avail-Festival by Andreas Makris is now avail-Festivalable for rental through ECS Publishing (www.ecspub.com). The new edition was

prompted by the discovery that the origi-nal transcription for band deleted approxi-mately twenty percent of the composition at the request of the publisher. Since the publication of the transcription, this de-leted material has been largely unknown to wind conductors. The new edition of the band transcription restores the missing measures and attempts to remain faithful to the composer’s intent.

While the current arrangement by Ma-jor Albert Bader has been very successful, hopefully this edition will renew interest in Mr. Makris’s work and stimulate new performances by younger conductors as well as those who are already familiar with the work in its current arrangement. For more information about the life and music of Andreas Makris, contact Steve at [email protected].

In fall, 2003, Lawrence Dale Harperfounded and now directs the new Wind and Percussion Institute at Carroll Col-lege. The mission of the institute is to provide performance experience for all age levels from advanced high school players, through college, to community ensembles, and fi nally to the professional level. Ensembles in the institute include the Youth Wind Orchestra of Wisconsin, the Waukesha Area Symphonic Band, the col-lege Wind Symphony, the Jazz Express, and the professional Wisconsin Wind Orches-tra, which features the college’s applied faculty. Concerts are often given with two or more ensembles presenting works, and sometimes groups are combined together to present major works like David Whitwell’s Sinfonia da Requiem.

The DePaul University Wind Ensemble, Donald DeRoche, conductor has a new recording, entitled, “Forget Me Nots.” It includes: Fanfare for Lafayette (Jacques Casterede), Concertino for Violoncello (Bohuslav Martinu), Divertimento (George Auric), Concerto for Bassoon, Contrabas-soon and Wind Orchestra (Henk Badings), and Symphonietta for Woodwinds (Wilem van Otterloo). It is on Albany Records, TROY 628.

This is the fi fth recording in the DePaul series produced for Albany Records. As with other offerings in the series, it includes seldom heard pieces by signifi cant compos-ers. These are pieces we should not forget, hence the title of the CD. Soloists include Christopher Costanza, cello; Chicago Sym-phony bassoonist, William Buchman; and Lyric Opera contrabassoonist, Lewis Kirk. The recording is available through Shat-tinger Music or via the Albany web site.

CBDNA members Mark Camphouse and Paula Crider served as co-coordina-tors of the 2004 National Band Association Young Composer/Conductor Mentor Proj-ect held in conjunction with the Bands of America Summer Symposium on the cam-pus of Illinois State University, June 20-23. The US Air Force Band of Mid-America served as ensemble-in-residence for the intensive three-day project during which three young conductors selected from a na-tional fi eld collaborated with and conducted rehearsals and a performance of new works by three young composers.

2004 NBA composition mentors working with the young composers individually, in group seminar sessions and in rehearsals were Donald Grantham, Dana Wilson, and Mark Camphouse. Conducting men-tors included Thomas Fraschillo, James Keene, and Frank Wickes. Frederick Fennell served as special guest master teacher of conducting.

The primary mission of the Mentor Proj-ect is to provide intensive, highly personal-ized instruction for gifted young composers and conductors and to bring closer the cre-ative and re-creative realms of music and music-making, thereby promoting greater understanding and more meaningful and mutually benefi cial partnerships between composers and conductors. There are no instructional/tuition fees for student par-ticipants due to all mentors donating their expertise and professional services. Meals and dormitory-style housing arrangements are provided free of charge for young com-poser and conductor participants through the generosity of Bands of America.

6 - NEWS Summer '04Minnesota, Morris Concert Band under the direction of John Stanley Ross had a special performance which featured three students performing concertos, four student conductors, and two works which incorporated multi-media techniques. These two works were O Magnum Mys-terium by Morten Lauridsen/H. Robert Reynolds and Prophesy of the Earth by David Gillingham. As the UMM Concert Band performed these works, four dancers spontaneously danced to the music, two vi-sual artists spontaneously created paintings evoked from the music and dancers, and the audience participated by writing poems and stories evoked from the music, dancers, and visual artists. After the performances, several audience members stood and read their artistic work. A reception occurred afterward so that everyone could mingle and discuss the art of making art. It was a wonderful success, and plans are being made to collaborate again in the future to create more spontaneous multi-media performances which directly engage the audience.

PREMIERES

On November 6, 2003 the Stetson Uni-versity Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Bobby Adams, performed the world premiere of Sydney Hodkinson’s Monu-mentum Pro Umbris. The performance took place at the SCI Southern Division Conference on the Stetson campus with the composer present.

Dr. Hodkinson provides the following program information:

Monumentum Pro Umbris took shape very gradually as a personal refl ection on you earth’s last decade of wars and large-scale human suffering. The contemplation of great pain and horrendous loss of life leaves one totally benumbed. On at least three other occasions, I have resorted to the medium of large, massed winds and percus-sion to give vent to similar concerns.

Accordingly, much of this music has a dark, meditative, ‘processional’ aspect, perhaps evoking a somewhat Byzantine religious ritual. The muted chorales (in the horns, and later intoned by the clarinets), implacable percussion, and an extensive use of repetition (both of a brass 6-note

motto and ascending woodwind fi gura-tion) all conspire to convey the work’s sombre attitude.

All of the sonic material often obses-sively is generated from a brief fragment of Claudio Monteverdi’s 1608 Lamento D’Arianna: “Lasciate mi morire…” (O, let me now die!). The renaissance master’s quotation is only heard very distantly near the close of the piece.

The score is dedicated to the loving memory of two American composers: Earle Brown (1926-2002) and Ralph Shapey (1921-2002), both of whom took the time and patience in the late 1950's o serve as mentor for a very young Canadian beginner. I am eternally grateful for their generosity. The work was written for the wind ensemble of the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, N.Y. (with whom I had a close relationship, both as performer and conductor), and its new leader, Mark Scatterday, on the occasion of his appointment in July, 2002.

Monumentum Pro Umbris (Memorial for the Departed Spirits) is approximately 20 minutes in duration and is scored for full winds, brass, a large percussion section, with harp and piano. It was conceived in Aspen, Colorado and Bloomington, Indi-ana, during teaching stints there, and the scoring was completed on August 30, 2002 in Ormond-by-the-Sea, Florida.

The Carroll College Wind Symphony commissioned Song of the Skyloom for Chorus, Wind Orchestra, and Actor, by the eminent Dutch composer, Bernard van Beurden. The 35-minute work is based on stories and songs of Native Americans. The actor recites stories between movements as well as during the music. Van Beurden’s unique harmonic language gives voice to native American sounds and religious be-liefs without imitating them. The premiere was given on March 26 on a concert that included Van Beurden’s bassoon concerto played by the Wisconsin Wind Orchestra.

The United States Naval Academy Band, Commander Donald Keller, Leader, pre-miered Symphony for Band (Academymiered Symphony for Band (Academymiered Symphony for Band ( ) by Steven L. Rosenhaus on October 10, 2003 at Alumni Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD; the composer conducted the premiere. The four-movement, 20-minute work was commissioned by the USNA Band in celebration of its 150th anniversary.

While the work is cast in traditional classical forms, the language used in-cludes extended tonality, free atonality, and twelve-tone tonality (a harmonically-based musical system devised by George Perle) in accessible ways that audiences fi nd com-prehensible, interesting, and moving.

The Mercer University Wind Ensemble conducted by Douglas Hill performed the Georgia premiere of Eric Ewazen’s Dan-zante on April 16th at The Grand Opera House in downtown Macon with James Thompson, Professor of Trumpet at the Eastman School of Music as soloist and Eric Ewazen, Professor of Composition at the Juilliard Conservatory of Music in attendance. Both Thompson and Ewazen spent two days at Mercer presenting master classes and lecturing at Mercer’s Depart-ment of Music prior to the concert. Eric Ewazen’s program notes are as follows:

The work is inspired by a dramatic painting by Diego Rivera, entitled Danz-ante which depicts an elderly Aztec dancer with a spectacular, boldly colored feathered headdress. There is a rhythmic energy to the painting—the swirl of the feathers, the focused gestures of the dancer, and the look of intensity on the dancer’s face.

Throughout the concerto the trumpet is front and center—introducing the main me-lodic gestures of the piece and soaring and singing in each of the movements.

The fi rst movement, Colores is dynamic and expressive, with the soloist sounding declamatory lines, and the wind ensemble providing a bouyant and lively accompani-

The fi nal movement Azteca uses compound rhythms and ostinato fi gures to portray the sound world of an ancient Aztec dance. The dance builds in intensity throughout with ever growing energy and excitement.

The Emory Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Scott Stewart, presented three premieres this spring: Redline Tango (grade 6 world premiere commission consortium) by John Mackey (www.ostimusic.com), Rise (grade 4+ world premiere commission) by Steven Bryant (www.stevenbryant.com), and Courage and Compassion (grade 4 Southeastern premiere) by Jim Bonney (www.jimbonney.com). Future commis-sions include works by composers Libby Larsen and Stephen Paulus.

The High Plains Music Camp Faculty Band gave the world premiere of and a time by Jeff Jordan on July 31, 2003 on the campus of Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS. The work was conducted by the composer and is currently in preparation for release by C. Alan Publications. Jordan is the director of bands at Fort Hays State. His composition teachers include James Barnes, John Pozdro, Jack Stamp, Charles Hoag and Paul Rudy.

HIDDEN TREASURESDavid Kish, University of Georgia

Almost lost, but not forgotten! The University of Georgia hosted the

CBDNA Southern Division Meeting in February of 1968. For that conference, Donald I. Moore composed a march which he dedicated “To my colleagues in the College Band Directors National Association.” Our trombone professor, Philip Jameson, attended that conference and remembered the premiere performance by the UGA Concert Band, Roger Dancz conductor. He wondered if we still had a copy. I sifted through our library and dis-covered the manuscript score and parts to the CBD’N’A Concert March.

The march was based on the notes C-B-D-N (noise)-A. The noise, of course, is represented by a cymbal crash. The composer, the late Donald I. Moore, was the director of the Baylor University Band from 1948-1969 and professor in the music school until 1979. The march, published in 1968 by Barnhouse, remains available for purchase from the Barnhouse Archive for $80.00. A Grade 4 difficulty level, CBD’N’A Concert March is approximately three minutes in length.
