iPad program for these year levels continues in 2017 and will

remain fully supported by the College. These devices will

continue to be pivotal learning tools within the classroom for

CareMonkey

The Health Care System at the College

CareMonkey is an innovative parent controlled electronic

medical form for schools that have a duty of care

responsibility.

It is an electronic version of the paper based forms that you

have previously been required to fill in for excursions and

camps, etc.

It also provides parents with the opportunity to update

medical information promptly and accurately while providing

the school with instant access to the emergency information

provided by you.

When advised to do so please create your CareMonkey

profile for your son and share this information with the

College. We will then have access to the data that you have

entered and we will use this system to have access to

student medical information when attending camps and

excursions.

All excursion permission letters will then be emailed to

parents/guardians using this system. You will be able to

grant approval for your son to attend these activities.

Parents of Year 7 students

An email will be sent to parents of Year 7 2017 students and

new families regarding the setup of your CareMonkey profile

for your child.

Parents of Year 8 to 12 students

Parents who have still not updated their CareMonkey profile

are required to revisit your sons CareMonkey profile, as a

matter of urgency, update any relevant information and

clarify that the email and contact information is accurate.

In order for students to leave College premises and attend

any excursion they must have a current CareMonkey profile.

College Photos

College Photos will take place on Monday 6 February for all

students in the College. Students are expected to be in

correct College uniform, clean shaven and well-groomed for

the College Photos.

Epipens and Excursions

Parents of students that are at risk of anaphylaxis should

be aware that, in response to Ministerial Order 706, it is

College policy and a requirement of legislation that

students who attend the College must have supplied the

College with a valid Epipen and a current anaphylaxis

action plan for their personal use.

When a student attends an excursion or event off the

premises they must carry their individual College Epipen

and their spare Epipen from home with them in order to

attend that event. This is to ensure that sufficient

medications are available should the student require them.

If parents have specific enquiries about Epipens please

contact Ms Ireland in First Aid at our Bundoora Campus.

From the Assistant Principal - Student Welfare

Welcome to Parade College for 2017

A very warm welcome to families joining the Parade and the

Edmund Rice community for the first time. Our aim is to

provide experiences at Parade which allow your sons to

discover and develop their interests and talents, to embrace

the many varied opportunities life at the College offers, and

to grow into thoughtful young men, ready to take their place

in the communities they then move into once they have

completed their education with us. At the same time, we

look forward to the contribution that your son will make to

the College in his time with us.

Year 7 2017 Families

Our largest, newest group of Paradians enjoyed their

Orientation Day in December last year, and we were

delighted to meet them. We hope that their first day as

Paradians on Wednesday 1 February is equally as exciting

for them.

Below are a few reminders for our Year 7 2017 students:-

All Year 7 2017 Students – Wednesday 1 February

Remember to make sure your son knows where to find

you if you are picking him up at the end of his first day.

Make sure your son has his College Student Planner,

laptop and padlock with him on his first day for his

locker.

Your son should be dressed in his summer College

uniform. He can choose to wear his blazer to and from

school in Terms 1 and 4 – it is not compulsory in those

terms. However, he will need to have it and his College

tie at school for Photo Day on Monday 6 February.

Please make sure that your son’s school shoes are

made of hard, black, polishable leather – please see

the next page for details as to the correct shoes to

purchase.

Your son will need to bring his lunch and snacks to

school on Wednesday. The Canteens will be open if he

prefers to buy his lunch – an icy pole and drink will be

provided at lunch time as a special treat.

Buses will be running in the morning and the afternoon

on 1 February – make sure you have a back-up plan in

place in case your son misses his bus at some stage

during the year!

Year 7 2017 Liturgy

At 2.30pm on Wednesday 1 February, the Year 7 and Year

12 students at both Campuses will celebrate a Liturgy

together, to welcome our newest Paradians, and to begin

the process of handing on the traditions of our College.

Year 7 parents are very welcome to join the boys and staff

for this in College Hall at Bundoora or in the MacKillop

Centre at Preston. The Liturgy will conclude around

3.00pm, and the students will be free to go home with

parents then.

And welcome back to our continuing families and

students for 2017

Some reminders appear below and on the next page for

the first week back for 2017. We hope it is a productive

year for your sons, academically and personally.

Uniform

Please check that your son has the correct summer

shirt ready to go for Day 1. Winter shirts with or

without tie are not permitted

If your son chooses to wear a singlet under his shirt,

please make sure that it is plain WHITE – no logos,

prints or colours.

Grey Shorts or trousers can be worn in Term 1 – dress

shorts only – no elastic or drawstring waists please!

Jumpers and blazers go together to and from school!

If your son wishes to wear his jumper to and from

school, he must wear his blazer as well!

Grey marle walk socks with black, hard, polishable

leather shoes – no canvas shoes, or black leather

‘basketball style’ shoes. No BLACK socks allowed

Leave all jewellery at home – no earrings, pierced

jewellery, necklaces, rings, bracelets, friendship bands,

sports bands, or other bands to be worn. If it is

precious or important in any way to your sons it is safer

at home, away from possible accidental damage or

loss.

Page 7: From the Principal - parade.vic.edu.au 1 … · Classes resume for Year 7, 11 and 12 students at 8.35am on Wednesday 1 February and for Year 8, ... Mr Anthony Cicutto Hughes 14 Mr

Hair should be neat, clean and in a business-like style –

eg; no dreadlocks, braids, mohawks, etc. Hair length

should not be below the collar of the summer shirt.

If your son is shaving, please make sure that he is

clean-shaven for school each day.

NB: All students in Years 7 to 12 at both campuses

MUST wear College uniform to school on Monday 6

February for College photos AND bring their blazers

and ties with them.

VCAL and VCE students may wear the Senior Tie for

these photos. They can be purchased for $27 at the

Uniform Shops at both campuses.

College Bus Network

Students are not allowed to eat or drink on any of the

buses to and from school;

They are required to stay in their seats to and from

school, and wear the seat belts where these are

provided;

Throwing any kind of material inside or outside the bus

is a serious offence and will be treated as such;

Noise levels should be kept to a reasonable level to

allow bus drivers to concentrate on the task of getting

students safely to their destinations.

Public Transport

We expect all students to behave with courtesy and respect

towards drivers and other passengers when using any form

of public transport to and from school, and on excursions.

Plenty Road and Bell Street

For students’ safety, we require all boys who need to cross

Plenty Road or Bell Street, for any reason, to do so at the

lights on the marked pedestrian crossings.

The traffic lights at the entrance to the Bundoora Campus

do not mark a pedestrian crossing and students should not

attempt to cross Plenty Road at that point.

Bundoora Parents, please do not ask your son to meet

you in the Hungry Jack’s carpark, or drop him off there

in the morning – the boys will always take the shortest

way across the road, and there is no designated

crossing from that point across Plenty Road.

We would ask that parents emphasise this point with their

sons so that students can remain safe as they cross two

very busy roadways. We also expect students to obey

traffic signals, teacher directions and instructions given by

crossing supervisors.

From the Director of Ministry

2017: Opening the door to a new year to deep learning

A new school year always begins with a mixture of anticipation and trepidation. As a

staff, we are conscious that a very busy year lies ahead of us. But we feel refreshed and

ready for the challenge - we have had a well-needed rest and now we begin to look

forward with eagerness to getting back in the classroom again. There is a sense of

enthusiasm in students as well. They may not admit it, but there is a certain amount of

excitement at the prospect of getting stuck in to a new year of learning.

Before we begin, it is good to reflect on the true purpose of education according to the

vision of a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition. Perhaps the words of Pope

Francis, can offer a clear vision of the task that lies ahead. He laments what he sees as

the secularisation of Catholic education, where we only offer an education “in immanent

things”. He makes a strong appeal to all Catholic educators to communicate “the things

of God”. He goes on to explain what needs to happen if a school is to be an authentic

Catholic school:

“Transcendence is what is wanting – for me, the greatest crisis in education, in order that it be (truly,

authentically) Catholic, is this closure to transcendence. … It's in school where one learns truth, the

good and the beautiful. It is a path that leads to the three languages that a mature person needs to

know: the language of the mind, the language of the heart, and the language of the hands. All in

harmony. In other words, think of what you feel and do; listen to what you think and what you do;

and do well what you think and do. The three languages, in harmony and together. School is a

place of encounter, where parents can meet teachers and collaborate along with them. That's why

family and school go hand in hand.”

There is little to add to this vision as he captures the essentials of what we attempt to do here at Parade. It is good to set sail

on the adventure that will be 2017 with this vision in our hearts. Pope Francis finished his talk with an appeal that the whole

Parade community would do well to engrave in our consciousness as we begin:

"Please, please don't let our love for school be taken away."

Let us preserve our love of learning and our love of Parade College as we ‘open the door’ to this adventure together.

Dr Michael Loughnane

Director of Ministry

can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you

Helping your son make a successful transition to Year 7 at Parade

Moving from primary to secondary school is a big transition. It can be a time full of fun, excitement and new experiences, but

can also be challenging or worrying for some children. You can help by making sure your child is prepared and feels

supported.

What to expect

Children often have mixed feelings about starting secondary school. They might be:

excited about new friends, subjects and teachers

nervous about learning new routines, making new friends or even wearing a new uniform

worried about handling an increased workload or being bullied.

You might also worry about these issues, and about whether your child will have the confidence and skills to handle them.

These worries are all normal. Secondary school also means a move from the familiar to the unknown, and a whole new way

of doing things. Your child will need to meet new peers and make new friends, and establish or re-establish his position

within a peer group.

Schoolwork

Your child will need to adapt to new teaching and assessment styles, cope with a wide range of subjects, adjust to having

different teachers in different classrooms, become more responsible for his own learning, manage a heavier study and

homework load, and learn a new and more complex timetable.

Getting around

Your child will have to adjust to a new school campus, find his way around, get to class on time with the right books and

materials, and possibly cope with new transport arrangements. All the issues above might be particularly challenging for

some young people living in outer lying communities.

When children are making the move to secondary school, parents have the biggest influence on how smooth the transition is.

Your child’s friends do influence how your child feels about the move, but your support has longer-lasting effects.

Preparing to start secondary school

You can help to ease any worries your child has about starting secondary school by preparing your child in the months and

weeks before term begins.

Involve your child in decision-making. For example, you could try talking together about school uniform decisions,

transport to and from school, and subject choices, if they’re offered.

Talk with your child about what he’s most looking forward to and what he’s worried about. Really listen when your child

shares his feelings about starting Year 7

Listen to your child’s worries, but also get him to look at the positive things about the move. For example, you could

highlight the new opportunities your child will have by talking about extracurricular activities your child could choose at the

new school.

Talk with your child about friendship worries. For example, you could ask what your child’s friends are saying about

secondary school. You could also talk about how your child might keep in touch with old friends and make new friends at

Parade.

Page 16: From the Principal - parade.vic.edu.au 1 … · Classes resume for Year 7, 11 and 12 students at 8.35am on Wednesday 1 February and for Year 8, ... Mr Anthony Cicutto Hughes 14 Mr

During the transition to Parade

Here are some ideas to help with the practical side of the transition to Parade

Try to arrange for a parent, grandparent or other close adult to be home before and after school for the first few weeks of

transition.

Find out the name of the teacher responsible for your child’s overall care, attendance and social and academic progress.

This person is called the Tutor Teacher. Make personal contact with this person as early as possible to introduce yourself

and ask questions.

Try to make your home as comfortable for study time as possible. For example, make sure your child has a quiet place to

study, away from distractions such as the TV or a mobile phone. When the internet is necessary for study, you might want

to keep an eye on the websites your child is using.

These ideas might help with worries about getting to know people and making new friends at Parade

Parade has a Failte program, which matches a Year 12 student with your son. The program provides nurturing and

guidance and students meet together once a term

Tutor Teachers meet with your son’s Tutor Group every Friday. This will build an important relationship.

Let your child know that new friends are welcome in your home. Encourage your child to invite new friends over, or be

ready to transport your child to their houses.

Help your child explore new opportunities. Learning a musical instrument, trying a new sport or joining a drama class are

great ways for your child to meet other kids and get involved in school activities.

You could try these suggestions for handling emotional ups and downs:

Be prepared for early ups and downs. Adjusting to change takes time, but if things don’t stabilise after the first six

weeks, talk to your child’s Tutor Teacher in the first instance.

Remind your child that it’s normal to feel nervous about starting something new – for example, you could share how

nervous and excited you feel when starting a new job.

Talk to other parents to check whether your child’s experiences and feelings are similar to those of others. Sporting and

school events are a good place to meet other parents.

Try to make sure your child eats well, gets plenty of physical activity and gets plenty of sleep. The change to secondary

school is likely to make your child more tired at first.

Your feelings about your child starting secondary school

Your child’s transition to secondary school is a big change for you too. Your relationship with your child’s primary school

might be ending, and you’re likely to have a different sort of relationship with your child’s secondary school.

It’s OK for you to have mixed feelings about these changes.

Talking to other parents, particularly those who have gone through high school transition, often helps. It might ease your

mind to know that many children find things a little hard at first but settle in during the year.

Also, other parents who are experienced at the school can often answer small questions and give you helpful tips about how

things work at your child’s new school.

And don’t be surprised to find that your child doesn’t want you to be as visible at his secondary school as you might have

been during the primary years. Remember that he’ll still need your support outside of school, and that it’s all part of the way

he develops greater independence.

Keep talking with your child about school. If you’re having trouble getting your child to open up, try our tips on talking about

school.

Page 17: From the Principal - parade.vic.edu.au 1 … · Classes resume for Year 7, 11 and 12 students at 8.35am on Wednesday 1 February and for Year 8, ... Mr Anthony Cicutto Hughes 14 Mr

Signs your child might be having difficulty

Signs your child might be struggling include:

a lack of involvement in the new school

little or no talk about new friends

refusal to talk with you about school

little or no interest in doing homework

low confidence or self-esteem – your child might say he’s dumb or stupid

no desire to go to school, or refusal to go

a drop in grades or academic performance.

If your child is having trouble, don’t wait for things to improve on their own. Try to get your child talking about how

he’s feeling, let him know that his feelings of worry and discomfort are normal, and see whether you can work out some

strategies together. Also consider speaking with your child’s Tutor Teacher, School Counsellor or GP.

Transitions for children with special needs

The transition to secondary school is sometimes more challenging for children with special needs. It’s important to ensure

that your child – and your family – are adequately prepared for the change, and have access to appropriate information. You

might need extra time to plan your child’s transition to secondary school. Student Support services and School Counselling

services at Parade will play an important role in ensuring your child’s needs are supported.

If you’d like additional support or have concerns, you can seek advice from your child’s Tutor Teacher, House Leader,

Learning Support Team or the School Counsellors.
