This innovative approach will be expanded upon in 2018 andwill be led by teachers, confident in implementing the four C’sof future-focused learning while utilising a range of IT tools andusing classroom space flexibly.

Supported by the continued focus on Learning Intentions,Success Criteria, Self-regulation and Feedback our studentswill have increased opportunities to become self-directedlearners to truly engage in 21st century learning.

Students continue to be recognised for their determination inworking towards the school’s expectations as well as beingable to identify their own personal goals, a process which wasundertaken in Term One of this year and which will continue in2018. Our Sherwood Star badges remain highly valued with allstudents K-6. This year has seen 814 badges handed out tostudents K-6. With eleven students reaching the pinnacle andbeing awarded with a Gold badge.

A large number of students have represented our school atzone, regional and state level in team and individual sports. Withmany others participating in the annual Oracy and Hills PublicSpeaking Competition, Debating, the Premier’s Spelling Beeand Reading Challenge; Students continue to be offered theopportunity to learn an instrument as part of the schools bandor participate in the Cool Kids music program. Our Chineselanguage classes, continue to go from strength to strength, withone class, solely dedicated to teaching Mandarin to studentswhose first language is English.

Our school also continued with our annual and highly valuedschool run events such as Harmony and ANZAC Days,NAIDOC recognition week, the Bookweek celebrations,Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals and Ridingfor the Disabled. P&C events, SRC Fundraisers, whole schoolperformances, school incursions and excursions have ensuredthat learning experiences are varied.

In a few short weeks, the school will farewell a number ofpeople that have been an integral part of our community. Mostnotably, we say goodbye to our Year 6 students, whoseeducational journey at Sherwood Ridge is drawing to a closeand we wish them every success as they move into high school.

To the parents of those students, who, for 2017 will be the lastyear of being part of our school community, I would like to thankyou for entrusting your children with us and allowing us to sharein their educational experience with you.

In 13 days we will be farewelling a number of our staff. MrsCathy Keller, one of our school’s Deputy Principals will closethe chapter that has been Sherwood Ridge and the Departmentof Education. In her time at our school, Mrs Keller has beencommitted to the establishment of positive relationships withthe students and the parents of those she has taught andsupported. I congratulate her on the contributions to publiceducation that she has made during her 30 plus year careerand wish Mrs Keller the very best as she begins her retirement.

Of our class teachers, we say goodbye to Mrs Hirsch, ourschools Learning and Support Teacher and Mrs Bugeja, a longserving Student Learning Support Officer, who have each beensuccessful in gaining new positions through Merit Selection.Mrs Hirsch will take up her position at Anzac Park PS whileMrs Bugeja will move to Homebush PS in 2018. During their

time at Sherwood Ridge, they have each made outstandingcontributions to our school and are well deserving of theirappointments. Mrs Apap and Miss Hook, will be taking leavefor 12 months, Mrs Apap to spend more time with her youngfamily, while Miss Hook will taking a hiatus from the rigors of fulltime teaching.

Integral to our teaching staff are our school’s temporaryteachers and at the end of this year, we say farewell to ourtemporary teachers, Mrs Kennedy, Mrs Serafim, Mrs Alam andMrs Higgins. I thank them for their commitment to the studentsat our school and wish them well as they write their nextchapters.

I would again like to reiterate that we remain committed to highexpectations, with a focus on continuous improvement so thatevery child, every teacher and every parent improves every yearand I would like to thank all of our parents who have taken thetime throughout the year to provide us with feedback on howwe are doing and what changes that they would like to see.

I look forward to increasing the opportunities for parents toengage further to ensure that we remain truly responsive to ourcommunity.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKAll volunteers or parents who have direct contact with childrenin the provision of administrative, clerical or providingassistance in the school i.e.: classrooms, library, canteen etc.will need to complete their Working With Children’s Check viathe link below. This then needs to be given to the office.

A Working With Children Check is a prerequisite for anyone inchild-related work. It involves a national criminal history checkand review of findings of workplace misconduct.

The result of a Working With Children Check is either aclearance to work with children for five years, or a bar againstworking with children. Cleared applicants are subject toongoing monitoring, and relevant new records may lead to theclearance being revoked.

The Check is fully portable which means it can be used for anypaid or unpaid child-related work in NSW for as long as theworker remains cleared.
