SACE Result At the end of 2019, Kadina Memorial School, celebrated another year of SACE success with 8 students achieving above 90 ATAR without bonus points. This number over doubles when you add the 5 bonus points that we automatically receive for being a rural school. Congratulations to Blair Whittaker, year 12 Dux, with an ATAR of 98.3 and Amelia Ryan the second highest achieving student with an ATAR of 97.05. Congratulations also to the students and teachers who achieved the five merit scores and the 7 students who also achieved an A+. I would like to thank all the staff who contributed towards this result and in particular, Verity Williams, Karm Kleinig and Megan Tucker, whose care and attention to detail means that each of our students was able to fulfil their potential. From the Principal: Alistair Williams Welcome to a new school year, heralding the start of a new decade of education! I trust students and families all had a good break and are refreshed to resume and extend their learning, seek challenges and relish the many opportunities provided throughout the school year. I extend a warm welcome to our new families, with 52 reception students starting this week, and a further 82 students transitioning into Middle school or transferring from other schools. This means our enrolment is currently 1,100. I was particularly heartened to see our youngest and oldest (year 12s) read to each other on day one which was a great way to break down barriers and create a sense of belonging at Kadina Memorial School. In week 3, on Tuesday 11 February, I invite all parents and caregivers to our Family Information Night. This is an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, perhaps visit your child’s classroom and become familiar with the school environment. As a parent I value these occasions as it allows me to put names to faces, have a friendly chat to my child’s teacher about class goals, expectations, and ask questions about school events and guidelines. ‘Mobile Phones and the Like Devices’ starts term 1 2020.

Principal’s Report continued: Mobile Phone or Like Devices Guideline

What does this mean for students? Whilst on school grounds no student from R-11 is permitted to use a mobile phone or like devices from 8.30am until dismissal. Year 12 students may access their phones in the year 12 common area at recess and lunch time only. The revised guideline is the result of extensive school community consultation and feedback in 2019 by a committee comprising Governing Council members and staff. Staff News There are a number of staff changes at the beginning of each school year. We welcome back Sherelle Rowe Sims to the team following family leave. Sherelle will teach Instrumental Music after her predecessor Dom Meehan accepted a position in Adelaide. We also farewell Student Services Officer Em Della Torre from the Early Years sector whose family has moved to Adelaide and Bill Saunders who has retired. We wish them both well.

Sherelle Rowe Sims Em Della Torre Bill Saunders

Senior school teacher Luke Atkinson and family have returned from a 12 month teaching exchange. The first day of reception in Australia was a new experience for daughter Imogen.

We welcome seven new faces to our team, however, students are already familiar with many following Pre Service Teacher (PST) placements during the past 12 months. Brittany Dunchue, a former PST, will step into the Middle School English and Humanities faculty, as well as teaching senior History. Tanya McCarthy joins us from Wallaroo Mines Primary and will teach year 4s. Sally Martin comes to us from Coober Pedy and will teach across the sub schools. Vanessa Koch has made a seachange from Adelaide and joins our maths team, teaching maths and science at secondary school level. Karen Brown has stepped into the role of the primary small class teacher following a long career in the private education sector. Hamish Price and Stacey Kemp are both graduating teachers and have local links to the Copper Coast. Hamish will teach Technical Studies, Health and PE, while Stacey will join the year 7 team.

From left, Brittany Dunchue, Tanya McCarthy, Sally Martin, Vanesa Koch, Karen Brown, Hamish Price and Stacey Kemp. Please make them all feel welcome. I hope to see many of you at Family Information Night on Tuesday 11 February. Regards, Alistair Williams Principal

Sub School Welcomes

R-6 Corner Welcome to the 2020 school year for all R-6 families. We have started the year productively with high levels of energy and commitment. Staff are developing with students clear understandings of what we are ‘going after this year’. These have been summarised visually by graphics created by our very own, current Year 12 student, Damon Mills. (Damon achieved an A+ for Creative Arts last year and it’s easy to see why). Students have been introduced to these themes this week and can tell you more. In Summary they are:

Debbie Terrett Above, Year 12 students read to reception and some year 1 students on the first day of Head of R-6 school, breaking down barriers, and proving it is important to attend school every day, Deputy Principal even when you’re older – lifelong learning leads to good results!

Learning to read, reading to learn. Unlike walking and talking our brains aren’t wired to learn to read and in the early years we learn the many skills to become efficient readers of a range of text. Around year 3 the focus changes as with these foundations we read to learn. Developing readers who love to read, choose to read and want to read to problem solve, be entertained, learn and more is our challenge.

Numbers Count. A deep understanding of the way numbers work together is paramount to developing students understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills. Given this, at least three lessons a week will focus on number understanding as ‘numbers count’.

SEA stands for the ‘Social and emotional approach’. When students are aware of themselves and others socially they can form the skills to self-manage their emotions. Building student’s ability to express feelings, emotions and reflect on their behaviour leads to greater emotional self-regulation. Collaborating with and learning from others is essential in the 21st Century. Initially we are delivering a Pastoral Care lesson each week and regular interoception (a new word for many) activities. You may have noticed a pattern in the descriptions ie, foundation/essential/paramount. The start of year is when we set the scene and ensure all the basic building blocks are in place for the year. Thank you for ensuring your child is at school, well rested and ready to learn – it makes such a difference. During this term we will through this space share more details about each area.

Middle School Report Welcome back to a new school year and a new decade. If you are a returning family welcome back and if you are a new family welcome aboard. This year in Middle School we will be putting greater emphasis on using Daymap to communicate with students and families. We trust that you will be patient with us as we develop our skills around this. In week 3, at the Family Information Night we will have some more details about this. You can access Daymap via the school website but need to ensure that your details ie email address, telephone numbers and residential/postal address are up-to-date – please make contact with the Front Office to ensure this. We will also be fine tuning the Accelerate Program this year to ensure that students are submitting all assessment tasks – again greater detail at Family Night and in future newsletters. All the best with establishing a back to school routine for the year - looking forward to another successful year.

Tarryn Germein Head of Middle School

Unit News Welcome back everyone to the 2020 school year. I hope you all had an enjoyable and restful holiday with your family and friends. It was great to see the students eager to meet and play with their friends after the summer break. They settled straight back into school life and routines, ready to learn for another year. We welcome two new Reception students and their families to the Unit, and look forward to the positive partnerships we will be developing throughout the year. The students were also very excited to see their friends, teachers and support staff. Julia will continue teaching full time in the Junior class and Rachel and I will continue to share teaching in the Senior class, with Rachel teaching Monday-Thursday and I will be with the class on Fridays. This term our integrated theme is “Transport” with the focus on a variety of transport from air, land, water to using bikes, scooters and the like. There will be an opportunity to meet staff and discuss programs at the Family Information Night on Tuesday 11 February from 3:30pm-4:30pm, so keep this date free. Unit staff all look forward to another year of great learning opportunities, and fun and engaging lessons. Sandy Mumford Unit Coordinator

Parents & Friends 2020

We had a wonderful catch-up with families at our annual ‘coffee & chat’ morning on Wednesday, providing an opportunity to meet new people and talk about our plans for 2020.

We are super excited about an ‘activity antics afternoon’ scheduled for later this term – ‘Watch this Space’ for more details – which may involve an obstacle course and other novelty events. The aim of this afternoon is to promote an inclusive and non-expensive physical activity for all to be involved, creating a sense of school community and belonging.

This year we are trying a few new initiatives, including holding some of our meetings during the day. Our next meeting will be on Thursday 20 February, in the Library, 9am. We would love to see as many people as possible at this meeting, as new ideas leads to creative outcomes for our children! As parents and caregivers we are problem-solvers on a daily basis! All are welcome and the school has plenty of resources and equipment to keep younger children entertained during meetings!

Hope to see you on Feb 20. Narelle Koch Chairperson Parent & Friends
