PARAP PUMPER JUMPERS Australian Rope Skipping Championships Canberra, 2018 The Parap Pumper Jumpers took part in a National championship, over the long weekend. They were very successful and came home with a swag of medals. The Parap students who competed were… Abbey George, Elaine Smith, Tamsin Groves, Jazmin Lord, Stella Campbell, Roma Lewis, Ruby Joswig, Mahlie Fitzpatrick, Madison Bowler, Greta Strohmayr, Zia McLeod AUSTRALIAN SKIPPING CHAMPIONSHIPS! On Thursday the 7th of June I left Darwin and headed to Canberra for the Australian Skipping Championships! I went with ten other students from our school. I got to do nine events! I am really happy with my results. I came first in the ‘3 minute speed’ event, That’s a gold medal! 3 minute speed is a long endurance event where you skip non-stop for 3 minutes. When they called my name I was so surprised, it was like I’d just seen a whale walking around out of water! After I received my medal I felt extremely proud and happy! I then went on and did lots of group routines with my brother Sammy, my cousin Olivia (who used to go to Parap) and Joel (from New South Wales). We participated in six team events together and went really well. We received 4 bronze medals! I am really proud of my team’s performances and am looking forward to going to Shanghai with them for the World Championships next month! Wish us luck! Stay tuned to hear more about our other skippers and their achievements next week. Thank you! Abbey

SCHOOL PERFORMANCE Each year we focus on an area of the Arts to celebrate and share the learning of our students with the whole school community. This year students from Transition to Year 6 will be performing music, songs, dance and a play focusing on Parap Primary School’s 60th Anniversary. Students have had input into the choices of their performance and are very excited about these. They have been learning their routines during Performing Arts lessons and will be working closely with Mrs Thomas and their class teachers over the next weeks to refine their acts. Many of the classes will be performing together with another class. Parents will be advised before the end of term as to whether their child needs a particular costume via the class newsletter. Our performance will be held on Thursday 16th August which is in Week 4 of next term. We are planning to have food stalls and a whole school community picnic atmosphere before the performance.

SCHOOL WALKATHON Our school will be conducting a Walkathon in Week 2 of Term 3, on Friday the 3rd of August, 2018. There will be two different courses that the students will be involved in, depending on their year level. Early Years students from Transition to Year 2 will be walking around our school grounds and trying to complete between 1 and 5 laps of the school. Primary students from Year 3-6 will be walking to Lake Alexander and back. We are asking that students collect sponsorship for the Walkathon during the school holidays and the first week of Term 3. Please discuss with your child who they should approach for sponsorship so that they are aware of the many safe options e.g. close family and friends, known neighbours etc. This is one of many fundraising activities that our school organises each year. We rely on fundraising for school improvement projects and we would love to have the children actively involved in this. Last year our fundraising efforts provided much needed play structures for our older students. This year’s major focus will be to update our audio visual equipment (sound, lighting, projector and screens) in our hall. This will enable our assemblies, award ceremonies, school performances and community events to be far more effective. It will also allow our PE and Performing Arts classes the ability to use this equipment when needed in their learning activities. There will be prizes awarded for students who collect the most sponsorship in each year level. The sponsorship forms will be sent out prior to the holiday break.

Dear Families, The Parap Primary school family has made me feel very welcome in the short amount of time that I have been here. I wanted to share a couple of the things I have been doing as the school counsellor. Along with regularly checking in with some students on an individual basis I created a meditation/relaxation room for all students on Tuesdays and Thursdays during recess. Many students have stepped in to relax for a few minutes and then they are on their way, while others come in and stay. The students really seem to enjoy this quiet time. I was also excited to be able to go into a few classrooms for wellbeing lessons. I enjoy having the opportunity to be in classrooms as it gives me the chance to get familiar with the students. It is also a great time for students to become familiar with me. As a school counsellor it is important for me to ensure students feel safe and are safe with others. With the world we live in it is important for this education to carry over into our social media world. As the school holidays are fast approaching your children will have a lot more time on their hands which often means more screen time with electronic devices. Many students have online social media accounts, such as Instagram, Twitter and SnapChat and are gaming online too. When used appropriately, these accounts can be a fun way for children to communicate and stay in touch with their friends outside of school. However, too often we see these accounts being used inappropriately, and this activity has a negative impact on students both in and outside of school. A website I like to share with parents is called safesmartsocial.com. On this site you will find various webinars you can join that discuss safety tips for children with mobile phones, iPads and other electronic devices. There is also a parent app guide, listing the safe apps available for your children. I encourage you to be aware of which apps/sites your child is using and to talk with him/her about making good decisions online that impact his/her digital footprint. In recent years, universities and employers have started researching the digital footprints of their applicants. So even though our students are young now, they need to understand that the things they post online can have ramifications educationally and professionally when they are older. Make It A Great Day!
