Year 11 2017 Music performance evening , November 22 After a busy day at school it was an absolute pleasure to attend the Year 11 2017 Music performance evening and be transported to another place by the beautiful music created by the students. Each member of the Year 11 Music class had the opportunity to showcase her talents as a singer, instru-mentalist or both in front of her family, friends and teachers. The repertoire varied from classical pieces such as Chopin and Mozart, through to pieces from popular musicals including “Wicked” and “Aladdin” to songs from more contemporary artists including Alessia Cara and Birdy. Each of the young women performed with great confidence, presence, passion and conviction. Thanks are offered to their teachers Mrs Oh and Ms Weier for the inspiration and guidance they have offered the students and to their families and friends who supported them. Year 10 retreat, November 23, 24 Year 10 Retreat On Thursday November 24 and Friday November 25, Year 10 students travelled to Stanwell Tops with their teachers and some ex- students for the annual Year 10 retreat. Ms Anderson and I had the privilege of visiting the group arriving just late in the afternoon. After dinner the students moved to the hall for a beautiful and moving reflection activity facilitated by Ms Pasion and the BYS team. The girls were very engaged in the activities across both days and returned to school tired but revitalised and more united as a year group. Mrs Casey and Ms Pasion did an amazing job organising the Year 10 retreat and gathering ex-students to act as group facilitators - Bethlehem Youth Services (BYS). It is lovely to see so many of our Ex-students come back each year and to welcome students from the HSC Class of 2017 to assist at the retreat and remain connected to the College. I would also like to thank, Mrs Wise, Ms Lindon, Mrs Kells, Ms Moodey and Mrs O’Shannassy for attending the retreat and for their contributions to ensure a rewarding faith formation experience for the Year 10 students. Farewell Mrs Pat Williams On Wednesday, November 29, Mrs Anderson and I were invited to join the St Vincent’s Primary School community for a mass of thanksgiving for the incredible contribution of Mrs Pat Williams, Principal of St Vincent’s. At the end of the year, after 51 years of dedicated service to catholic Education, Mrs Williams will retire. Mrs Williams has been the Principal of St Vincent’s for four years and she has led significant change to the learning culture of the school. The staff and students of the College created a beautiful eucharistic celebration celebrated by Fr Alan incorporating well chosen readings, prayers and songs. There were a number of lovely tributes to Mrs Williams from staff, students, parents and the Inner West Region Primary Consultant Mrs Chris-tine McRae before Mrs Williams offered her final Principal’s address. I would like to thank Mrs Williams for her friendship and collegiality and offer her our prayers and best wishes for the next stage of her life’s journey. Farewell Father Alan I refer to an email sent to all parents last week in regard to Father Alan’s new appointment as Parish Priest of St Joseph's Malvern, VIC from the begin-ning of 2018. Father Alan will be a great loss not only to the Bethlehem College community but to the Ashfield Catholic Education precinct. During his six years at St Vincent's he has been an outstanding Parish Priest and a valued chaplain for our College. He is a quiet, humble and gentle man who, despite being the only priest in this busy parish, has been incredibly generous with his time for our College masses, liturgies, and other staff and student faith formation events. He has been an absolute joy to work with and I will miss his great wisdom and energy. I ask you to keep Father Alan in your prayers as he commences his new journey. His replacement here will be Fr. Joji Bilowalu cm from the Fiji Islands. He will arrive here in the Parish at the end of January 2018. Year 12 Formal, Wednesday November 29 On Wednesday evening our HSC Class of 2017 gathered for one last time together to celebrate the end of 6 years of education at Bethlehem College with their Year 12 Formal at Le Montage Function centre at Leichhardt. It was a beautiful evening and the girls looked elegant and unrecognisable out of their school uniforms. The room was awash with our beautifully groomed young women wearing long flowing dresses in an array of gorgeous col-ours, accessorised with “killer” heels and clutch purses. They looked stunning. They and their partners danced the night away enjoying these last pre-cious moments together. Thanks are extended to Mrs Toomey, Ms Farhart and Mrs Condon for their excellent organisation of the Year 12 Formal. There was much work to do liaising with the venue, menus, dietary requirements, tickets, table organisation etc. all of which helped to make it a very memorable night for the girls. Parent/Student/Teacher meetings December 14 - 9am-12pm Parents are reminded that Years 7-10 Semester 2 reports will be distributed after Awards evening on Wednesday, December 13. Parents also have the opportunity to discuss their daughter’s report with her teachers on Thursday, December 14 between 19am and 12pm. Interviews can be booked through the parent portal. Instructions will follow shortly. The interviews will take place in the DPH.

From the Assistant Principal…

Dear Parents and Friends of the Bethlehem College Community,

From the Assistant Principal College Newsletter Term 4 Week 8

This Sunday 3 December is the first Sunday of Advent and marks the beginning of the Church’s liturgical year. Advent is the season of preparing for the birth of Christ. Ironically, Advent calendars of all descriptions have been in stores for weeks! There is an anticipation that is hard to ignore around us with Christmas lights furtively making their way to windows and around homes and Christmas trees being pulled out of storage and spruced up for trimming in homes and public places everywhere.

As we look towards Christmas, it’s timely for us all to remember that “the reason for the season” really is the baby Jesus. The joy of preparing for Christmas is infectious but we need to remember that at its basis is loving and giving - not just of presents but of ourselves. It’s a time to take stock of what we’ve notched up this year in terms of bringing the spirit of Christmas to those we have encountered this year. Simply put:

Have I been the best I could be this year?

The end of the year is just the beginning!

Your daughter/young person in your care has recently received from her teachers the assessments / tests completed as the final assessments to determine her final grade in each subject. Yet too often the default is simply for students to read the mark and not the feedback for what they can do to improve! The power of feedback or “what happens next” can make the single biggest difference to an individual’s progress, whether it be in work, school or life! Instead of just casting completed tasks to the bin, have your daughter reflect with you on her achievement! The Enhanced Learning Study Skills Site we recently launched is a great resource which students/parents can access, particularly the link “After Tests and Exams” https://www.studyskillshandbook.com.au/inside/inside_content/exams5.html

We have now linked the The Enhanced Learning Study Skills Site on our College Website so students and parents can access it directly. Your daughter has received her unique login and password but parents can access the site as well using the following details:

Alternately, go to www.studyskillshandbook.com.au http://www.studyskillshandbook.com.au/ and login as a subscriber with:

username: bethlehemcollege password: 18success

My hope and prayer is that we have all striven to live and love like Jesus in 2017, yet it is not over yet! As we busy ourselves in the coming weeks for Christmas and all it brings, take the time to talk to your daughter/ young person in your care about how she has tried to achieve her potential this year in all aspects of her life and one goal to take this even further in 2018.

This week’s school noticeboard message I drive past each day:

Best wishes Catherine Anderson Assistant Principal

Brainteaser No. 93—KenKen

This puzzle requires you to fill in the numbers 1 to 6 in each row

and column, so that no row or column contains the same number

more than once.

The clues in each ‘cage’ give you additional information for the

numbers in that ‘cage’. For example, 3- means the difference

between these two numbers is 3, 2÷ means the quotient for these

two numbers is 2.

Students are invited to solve this problem, and deposit the

answer, marked clearly with name and homeroom, in the box in the

General Office by 3pm on Tuesday 12th December. The first

correct entry drawn will receive a canteen voucher!!!!

Congratulations to last week’s winner, Selena Zeidan, 7V1,

who correctly answered 042

Well done Selena. See Mrs Mann for your canteen voucher.

From the Acting Religious Education Coordinator… Year 10 Retreat: The theme of this year’s retreat was “Create”. The scriptural theme was taken from Proverbs and is pictured below.

The girls spent time thinking about what kind of story will they write for them-selves and considering what God wants them to be. Ms Pasion spoke about how important it is not to let the opinions of others determine who they will be. We encouraged Year 10 to be women of strength and dignity and to see the future as open and full of possibility, to be like the woman described in Proverbs who is able to “laugh without fear of the future”. The Amazing Race was great fun, as always. Reading the Year 8 letters is always a very special part of the evening session. One of the highlights for me was the final session when the girls spent time sharing their experience of the Retreat. A common thread through all the girls’ testimonies was how it had brought the year group together, new friends had been made and old ones renewed. My hope is the girls see how important the love of God was for creat-ing the unity they felt on camp. I would like to thank the wonderful staff that helped with the Retreat. Mrs Wise, Ms Moodey, Ms Kells, Ms Pasion, Ms Lindon, Mrs O’Shaunassy. Ms Pasion was central to the success of the Retreat with her co-ordination of the BYS team and her ‘passion’ for evangelisation. The ex-students who make up the BYS team give two days to help with the Retreat. Their generosity and sense of fun is a wonderful testament to the girls and their families and to the kind of student Bethlehem produces.

Nursing Home Visits This week Ms Ibrahim and 7RELA (pictured right) wrapped 140 presents for the residents of the Nursing Home. I have been told that 7RELA is excellent at wrapping presents and that the staff at the Nursing Home is very grateful. Thank you to Ms Pasion and Ms Ibrahim for organising this and giving the girls the opportunity to spread Christmas cheer.

White Ribbon Day I am so incredibly grateful for being given the opportunity to attend such a wonderful event. The White Ribbon Day event held at Rozelle Park on Thursday 23 November, saw a heartwarming community of schools and organisations across the Canterbury - Leichhardt district, coming together to gain insight and spread awareness against the devastating tragedies of domestic violence. From an overwhelming variety of stalls that housed non-profitable organisations, to spectacular performances of live band music, students were given time to wander about these stalls and talk to the volunteers who came to support the event. Upon visiting these stalls, students were greeted with a range of informative pamphlets and brochures containing information about the organisation, as well as an assortment of showbags and free goods such as stress balls, keyrings, pens etc. Later on in the morning, honoured guests, teachers and students were treated to powerful speeches and several community talent acts performed by local schools. During the performances, I realised that the common concern amongst each act was of preventing domestic violence. This concern being expressed publicly to a crowd of attentive people was quite touching to hear and see, especially because inci-dents of domestic violence have been a censored topic for such a long time. In spite of all the information rich conversations with volunteers, free hot chocolate and free goodie bags, the thing that was most memorable to me was outburst of excited students rushing up to the stage, taking the pledge to prevent violence against women. This event will, undoubtedly, be one that I shall remember for years to come. The pledge: “I will stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence against women.” By Christine Nguyen

REMINDER PLEASE... St Vincent de Paul Christmas Hampers The Faith in Action leaders and the House Captains have launched the Homeroom Circle drive for donations to this year’s St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. We are encouraging each Homeroom Circle to think about the small things that make Christmas special for them and how they can give something to reflect this to the families who have little. See list right of some of the items which are needed. On Friday 8 December a wonderful group of mums will decorate the hampers. Please contact me [email protected] or Janine Hannigan [email protected] or contact the College Office on 9798 9099 if you would like to help, the more helpers the merrier.

Year 10 Retreat… On the 23rd of November, Year 10 participated in a retreat at Stanwell tops. The theme of our retreat centred on the notion of “create” where by, the girls reflected on the ways in which they can create positive change inwardly and within the world. The girls recently completed an intensive exam block, however, the retreat offered the girls a time to reflect and be inspired by their achievements this year and thus provided further encouragement for the senior years ahead. Our teachers centred much discussion in the at-tempted to foster encouragement and inspiration for issues that are concern-ing to students. Ms Pasion and Mrs Casey taught us the importance of self worth in a society where things and objects are placed at a higher value than being humane. We were then encouraged to nurture our catholic faith as a means to guide and foster resilience in this ever changing modern world.

The Bethlehem Youth Service (BYS) team were a group of ex-students who the girls were able to connect and share their concerns with in regards to senior years. The BYS team opened a way for the girls to gain more spiritual and emo-tional understanding via gospel songs, drama skits and discussion groups. It was an emotional time for the girls as they encounter the final years of high school in which they witness many girls leaving. The girls were also prompted to affirm acts of kindness and appreciation towards one another via notes which were placed in individual envelopes. There were also discussion groups, in which every member spoke of what they valued in another student. The girls were overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness of their peers and this has drawn us closer together as a grade. The most notable experience was the opening of our Year 8 letters in which we wrote to ourselves at camp, where we had written goals to achieve for ourselves in Year 10. The letters provoked an appreciation of personal growth that the girls valued and cherished. I cannot say how beautiful this experience was for the girls, we were given so much wisdom and kindness that I know all of us will continue to cherish. On behalf of Year 10, we would like to thank all the teachers involved in making this day possible - Mrs Casey, Mrs Bounds, Mrs Anderson, Mrs Kells, Ms Lindon, Mrs O’Shannassy, Ms Moodey and lastly Mrs Wise and Ms Pasion of whom we are going to miss very dearly. From the Music Department… Nominated for Encore!!! Aileen Lim, one of our talented Music 1 HSC students, has been nominated for Encore. Encore is a program of outstanding performances and compositions by students from the HSC Music examinations. It is held annually at the Sydney Opera House. Congratulations To Aileen - a wonderful achievement! Aileen was also selected to perform at the Archdiocesan HSC Performance Showcase Recital. CASPA - A Capella Workshop (Report By Evie Corradin, Year 10) On Wednesday the 20th of September, Bethlehem College’s A cappella group attended an A cappella workshop held by CASPA. The workshop was hosted by Deke Sharon, an American composer, teacher and veteran of A cappella music. We were so excited about this opportunity because we realised that we could get some really helpful tips and tricks to assist us in the lead up to the “AUSACA” competitions next year. We first had to sort ourselves into our vocal parts, Deke Sharon then began the workshop with an improvisation activity. One person from each vocal part would come up in front of the group and, one by one, begin singing a random musical phrase, with each person adding on to create a little tune/soundscape. This was a great exercise to get us comfortable and introduce us to different people and their voices. Then, he invited us all up to join in and sing together as a large group, which

was a really exciting moment. Sharon also demonstrated and taught some of his vocal instruments (which you can view on his youtube channel, “Deke Sharon”). He has created ways to emulate various instruments with his mouth and make them sound so realistic. For exam-ple, flute, trumpet, electric guitar and harmonica! He also explained the importance of vocal percussion in an A cappella ensemble and taught the three main components of vocal percussion/beat-boxing which we may use in our own group next year. After this we all sat down and he gave us the opportunity to ask him some questions about himself and his life and give us some advice. We learned about his involvement in the “Pitch Perfect” movies and about his journey in the a cappella music world. Overall, this workshop was an inspiring and incredibly enjoyable experience in which we learnt many things which will definitely assist us in our competition next year. On behalf of the Bethlehem College A cappella group, (we have yet to decide on a name) we would love to thank our Bethlehem music teachers, CASPA and Deke Sharon for providing us with this eye-opening opportunity.

Year 11 Performance Evening "On the 22nd of November, our Year 11 music class held a performance evening, in which each of us performed a piece of our choosing. The evening began at 6pm and went for approximately an hour. The Year 11 Music class had selected a piece of their choice to perform in front of invited family,

friends and members of the school commu-nity. The multitude of performances saw a vast range of song choices and instruments, from piano to vocals. Overall, the night went splendidly, with both performers and guests witnessing the outstanding talent and poten-tial of our Year 11 music class." Natalie Wihandono & Mackie Maximo. On Wednesday 22nd November a very sup-portive and appreciative audience were en-tertained thoroughly by our talented Year 11 Music 1 students. They performed a wide variety of instrumental and vocal works dem-onstrating their many skills and talents. We wish them every success as they begin to prepare their performance programs for the HSC next year. Mrs Bowyer

Counsellor’s Corner…

The Impact of Nattering

“You’re biting your nails again.” “Watch where you’re going.” “Late again!” “Can’t you do anything right?” “Tidy your room, you are so lazy!!”. Persistent negative comments like these, called nattering, are poor ways to shape children’s behaviour because they nip away at a child’s self-worth. Studies show that nattering does not improve behaviour; it actually worsens it. Nattering is especially hard on children with a poor self-image. Nattering and repeating commands make children nervous and resentful. Constantly reminding children of their failings or “bad behaviour” actually produces more negative behaviour. Children live up to our expectations of them and if our expectations are low that is what they live up to. Try to replace Nattering with positives. Examples of this instead of the nattering above would be “you were doing so well not biting your nails, what’s going on?” “Slow down, we all get a bit clumsy when we are rushing” “what happened to make you late?” “”you almost got it, what do you think you missed?” “ I know you are a very calm person, but your room needs to be tidy” And of course use consequences if the behaviour doesn’t happen. Continuing to talk, or repeating advice that you’ve previously given, makes the child believe that you don’t trust her to carry out a simple request, such as “Put a load of laundry in, please.” If you add a string of qualifi-ers ie NOW !!! Not like that….For once do it properly..I don’t want to have to wash it again!! etc you’re teaching her you don’t trust her to do it right (your way). Remember that you are “teaching“ your child not only how to do things but also how to talk to and interact with people. When a teacher asks a child to do something at school, her learnt behaviour at home may well rear it s head and she may react at school how she has learnt to react at home. If you would like suggestions on how to encourage your child to change behaviours that you find challenging please visit Kidspot, mind matters or have a chat with the school counsellor.
