MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL VOL 15.12 13 th September, 2012 Dear Parents and Carers Talk Like a Pirate Day This week Capt’n Roughnight, a well-known and liked pirate visited our school to promote our Talk Like a Pirate Day which is being held on Friday 21 st September. On this day all members of the school community are invited to dress-up for the day in support of Childhood Cancer Support (CCS). Further information on CCS can be found at their website http://www.ccs.org.au/. Capt’n Roughnight asked that all members of the school community donate 1 gold bullion with five (5) kangaroos stamped on it. Of course the Capt’n is happy to accept larger donations. All funds raised will be donated by the Student Council to Childhood Cancer Support. An example of children helping children. While he was here some of the children from PT read out their questions to him. Capt’n Roughnight told me that he was very impressed with the reading and writing of the children. One of the children asked him, “ Do pirates wear undies?” Obviously Capt’n Roughnight does not, as he asked me what undies were when he came back to the office to collect his sword, parrot and rum. Mr Doyle reminded Capt’n Roughnight that his sword, cutlass and rum must to be left at the office or at home on Talk Like a Pirate Day! Arts Showcase A very big thank you to the children, staff and parents who supported this wonderful event last Friday night. A big thank you to Miss Cubis who was the organiser. Attendance is important in the last week of term As we reach the end of Term 3, parents are reminded that children must attend school on every school day unless they have a reasonable excuse for being away, such as illness. Visiting family, being tired, or starting holidays early are not good reasons to be away from school. More information on the importance of regular school attendance is available at www.education.qld.gov.au/everydaycounts/docs/parent-fact-sheet.pdf Keep a watch on our school these holidays With the holidays fast approaching, we need you to look out for after-hours crime at our school. If you do see something suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene. Call the School Watch number –13 17 88 – and let the local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with the matter. Keep the number handy – 13 17 88 – and let’s work together to help create a safer school community. If you would like to know more about the School Watch Program, please call the department’s School Security Program on 3237 0874. Be safe on the roads for school holidays With the September school holidays rapidly approaching, now is the time to check the safety of your vehicle. The Department of Transport and Main Road’sTransport Inspectors will be checking all vehicles they pull over these school holidays in a state wide operation, Safe Drive, to ensure safety on Queensland’s roads. Look out for their new magenta, yellow and white uniforms because the transport inspectors could save your life. http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Travel-and-transport/Transport-Inspectors.aspx. Tips for Using the Drop off Zone Give yourself plenty of time. It does take the children time to walk to the drop off zone. Keep moving forward to the front of the line to collect the children. Make sure your car is organised for the children. E.g. place all parcels in the boot before you arrive at the school, to avoid the need to hop out and reorganise the car. Consider parking your car away from the school and walking. Model good practice and observe our code: I am cooperative, I am peaceful, and I am respectful. Make a sign with your family name and prominently display it to assist the staff on duty. If your child has not arrived after two minutes move off and drive around the block and re-join the queue. Tips for Using the school Car Park Look out, look out there are children about. Move down to the end as there are generally spaces available there. • Do not park behind other cars, and wait for your children. (This leads to accidents and endangers the lives of children.)

• Respect the spaces designated for Buses, Those with Disabilities and Commercial Vehicles. Hands on Behaviour At Springfield Lakes State school we promote a philosophy of peace through our values of

• Cooperation • Peace and • Respect.

Sadly, this can be undermined by parents advising their child to hit back at school. All children are told that if they come across an issue which makes them uncomfortable they should walk away and if necessary report it to a member of staff. Hitting back only escalates the issue and both children end up with a consequence. New ASD website A new online package is now available to support families and teachers of young children with autism spectrum disorder to move into school and have a successful journey through their education. The website provides a one-stop-shop for information and tips for starting school, managing day-to-day education needs and accessing ongoing support. The package was developed by the Queensland Government in conjunction with the AEIOU Foundation and Autism Queensland. www.education.qld.gov.au/asd-online-resource-kit/ 2012 Premier’s Reading Challenge – reading ends thi s week The 2012 Premier’s Reading Challenge is coming to a close with reading finishing on Friday 7 September 2012. Parents are reminded to finalise their child’s reading record form and ensure it is returned to school. Those students who have met the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement from the Queensland Premier during the Premier’s Reading Challenge celebration weeks from 12 November – 23 November 2012. http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/readingchallenge/ Warm Regards Peter Doyle Principal

A LETTER FROM A CONCERNED PARENT I want to congratulate the school on the Arts Showcase on Friday night. It was a great night and I hope that the school holds one every year. I must say though that I was disappointed in the behaviour of some parents in the audience on the night. Some parents kept talking all the way through every performance which meant that everyone couldn’t hear the children well. As the children had worked hard to perform on the night I was disappointed for them. I also think that the school encourages all of the children to be peaceful, respectful and cooperative and that adults should also follow these expectations.

Top DEPUTY PRINCIPAL NEWS Grandparents’ Day We will hold Grandparent’s Day in Term 4 on Friday, November 2nd. Please earmark this date which is the Friday before the Qld Grandparent’s Day. Traditionally, in this school we have held Grandparents and Special Friends Day to coincide with Education Week in second term. This year our proposed day early in the year clashed with Gala Days leading us to reschedule our celebration to the 4th term. I’m reliably informed that the Gala days are now over for the year! On Grandparents’ Day, we schedule interesting activities in classrooms and the day culminates with a performance by our choirs in the hall at about 11:30.More information will be presented early next term. I thought that you might like to know the history of Grandparent’s Day in Qld. Grandparents Day is celebrated in Queensland on the first Sunday of November each yea r, and is a chance for grandchildren, children and the community to thank grandparents for their love and support. In 2012, Grandparents Day will be on Sunday 4 November. As part of Grandparents Day celebrations, grandchildren are encouraged to thank their grandparents and let them know how much they care. P & C Fundraising Earlier this term I ordered our books for the C2C reading lessons for term 4. The cost of the books was about $6000.00. I have also ordered more take home readers for the Prep and to support our early years classes which cost another $5000.00 or so. This year we have spent at least $30 000 on English resources as we are still a growing school and when you are buying books money does not go far!. We are very grateful for our P & C’s contribution of $5000.00 per term which goes into the English budget. We are really appreciative of the fundraising efforts of the P & C who, by the way, are always happy to welcome new volunteers. If you are able to help out, please see Mel McKay or Jai Stafford or leave your name at the front office. Warm Regards Alexis Hay Deputy Principal

FROM THE ADMINISTRATION OFFICE

STUDENT ABSENCE LINE

Parents are requested to call the Student Absence Line on 3437 9860 to advise the school if your child/ren will be absent.

STUDENT PERSONAL DETAILS We are reminding parents to ensure that all contact details are up to date. We have had a number of incidents of late where we have needed to contact parents due to accident or illness and the phone numbers that we have on file are incorrect or have been disconnected.

MESSAGES TO STUDENTS We are receiving an increasing number of messages to pass on to students in relation to end

of day arrangements/pickup. It becomes extremely difficult to pass these messages on to students when we receive calls from parents minutes before the bell. We ask families to please make arrangements before leaving in the morning.

MOBILE PHONES Bringing mobile phones to school is not encouraged by the school because of the potential for theft and general distraction and/or disruption associated with them. However, we understand that on occasions parents require their children to have a mobile phone. This is to be logged into the office on arrival at school, with the mobile phone register being signed. Children collect their phones and sign them out in the afternoon.

PEANUT AND OTHER NUT ALLERGIES Parents are requested not to provide lunches or snacks containing nut products for children attending Springfield Lakes State School. This is to protect the significant number of students who have anaphylactic allergies to even traces of peanuts and other nuts. Some of these students are

so allergic that even a minute amount of peanut butter or Nutella could cause an anaphylactic reaction. Please do not send Nutella, peanut butter sandwiches or other snack products to school

that could put other students at risk. Thank you for helping us keep all of our students safe.

When packing lunches for our children please keep i n mind convenience is not always the best solution. The small cans of spaghetti or fruit with the pull ring lids are a very convenient solution for a meal but have also caused nasty accidents for little fingers. Please be mindful of this and perhaps take the time to open and pour the contents into a small plastic container.

While Mr Doyle likes dogs not all dogs like each other. Please do not bring your dog to school as some dogs bite and some dogs like to fight.

DEFENCE NEWS

HELLO Defence Families …….My name is Kim Roberts and I am the new DSTA at your school. I thought I would give you a snapshot of me….My husband has been in the Air force for 24 years…We have 3 children and have had several moves in that time, the last 2 having been with school aged children so I know first hand some of the challenges that come with being a Defence family. I have had the privilege to meet some of you already and I am looking forward to getting to know you as the year goes on. I have started the Defence Kids Club and this happens on a Tuesday and Thursday at both breaks in the outdoor room at the back of the library and the kids love it. I am also in some classrooms for support and this has been a great way to get to know the school, its teachers and the Defence kids. I am hosting a Milo Morning Tea with the Defence students. They have all been invited to come along to this event and share some morning tea with me next Tuesday 18th September at first break. Of course it is that time of the year that postings are out so if you are on the move please let me know if I can help you or your child in any way with this. Do not hesitate to contact me. Also if there are any parental absences for anything, again, please let me know so I can touch base with your child.

Walk with Me 2012

MontroseAccess provides therapy, respite and recreation services to more than 650 children and

young adults with physical disabilities throughout Queensland.

MontroseAccess was established in 1933 to provide care for children affected by the polio

epidemic. Today we are an independent, community-based organization providing support

services to children and young people with physical disabilities.

Through our four metropolitan offices and regional outreach program, we provide varied and

holistic services to clients with varying degrees of disability. The most common being

neuromuscular conditions such as Duchene Muscular Dystrophy, as well as juvenile arthritis,

acquired brain injury and arthrogryposis. Our clients age from toddlers (through our Early

Childhood program) to young adults (the Lifestyle and Leisure Program).

MontroseAccess is an independent not-for-profit organization without political or religious

affiliation. We do no duplicate services provided by condition specific organisations – we provide

services to those young people who would not otherwise be able to obtain them.

What is “Walk with Me”?

“Walk with Me” is an annual event that focuses on raising awareness and celebrating the inclusion

of people with disabilities. This event raises much needed funds for therapy, respite and

recreational services for our clients across Queensland.

The event is not a “fun run”, nor a competitive fitness event but a recreational walk. It provides

families, friends, colleagues and members of the local communities with the opportunity to walk

along-side their mates with disabilities in a non-competitive, lively, fun environment.
