Students are attempting tricks with their scooters and with large numbers of students waiting or walking past them, particularly in bus areas it is becoming very unsafe. We have two secured areas for them to store their scooters and students have been reminded this week that they are not to ride them in school grounds. Students waiting for buses have been asked to take their scooters to the staff on duty where they will be kept until they board their buses. If your student rides or brings a scooter to school can you remind them of their responsibility to be safe, not only to themselves, but to other students who are around them. We are planning to install more seating and shade for the ever increasing number of students catching buses in the afternoon, so this should also assist us with supervising students after school. Rob has been working with us for a few years now with improving numeracy teaching and learning practices. While parents may not know him, many of our students do because he has spent many sessions in our classrooms working with students and staff. Rob is returning to the classroom so while we will miss his assistance and advice, work will continue to improve the numeracy of our students across all subject areas. Students certainly have acknowledged his input with their response on last year’s school opinion survey with 92.1% saying that their “Maths skills are being developed at this school”. We wish him all the best with his new direction in education. Subject Changes for Semester 2

These changes for Senior students will be processed wherepossible and students will have their new timetables ready to goat the beginning or Semester 2. I would like to remind everyone

considering a subject change that these are not guaranteedand there are many factors that need to be considered beforegranting a subject change. First and foremost in our mind isways that we can maximise chances of achieving the QCE andobtaining the best possible results. Sometimes a simple changeof subject is not necessarily the answer.

Year 7 and 8 students will start next semester with a new suiteof elective subjects on their timetables. All other year levels willcontinue as they have done as electives subjects for these yearlevels are of a 12 month duration.

EXAM BLOCK

As mentioned in the last newsletter, all Year 11 and 12 studentshave received a personalised copy of their exam blocktimetable which will be in effect from Monday June 18 to FridayJune 22. This timetable clearly shows when they need to bein attendance and where they need to be for their assessmentpiece. If they have not received their individual copy due toabsence, these are available from Student Services.

As has been the case for the past few years, the followingconditions will apply:

Please assist your student where possible by ensuring thatthey are revising for their assessment pieces well in advance toreduce ‘cramming’ at the last minute.

In preparation for the New QCE system, Year 10 students willalso experience exam block conditions for the first time. BothMath and Science assessment pieces will be taking place inthe Sports Complex on Tuesday June 19. Year 10 studentswill not be permitted to leave school following their assessmenthowever, instead, returning to their regular timetabled classes.

Year 10 Update

2019 Preparation

This year’s current Year 10 students will be the first studentsto progress through the new senior system for Year 11 and12 in 2019 and 2020. All classes have now had an informationsession with Ms Gist to assist in their transition. Next term, students and parents will come in for a SET (Senior Education

and Training) meeting with a member of Administration or aHead of Department. The role of these meetings is to discussa student’s ambition for after school, then backward map toensure that the right subjects are selected for senior to providea suitable pathway. Prior to attendance at a SET Meeting, it willbe a requirement that a parent or carer attend an informationsession on the new senior. Time will be limited in the SETmeetings due to the volume of students to cover, and there willbe no time allocation to discuss the differences between theold OP system, and the new ATAR. By attending an informationsession, parents and students will attend their SET meetingsalready informed and ready to plan.

Our first session will be our largest, and we are hoping thatmost of our Year 10 cohort and their guardians can attend. The evening will be on Wednesday evening in the last weekof this term (27 June) at 4:45pm to 6:00pm. There will betwo information sessions held one after the other, with thefirst starting at 4:45pm, and the second at 5:20pm. Pleaseensure that you sign the register when you attend, so we cantrack which families have been informed. We urge all familiesto attend this evening, as we will have Heads of Department,Year 10 Case Managers, some teaching staff, representationfrom local tertiary institutions and a sausage sizzle available.A follow up, smaller session will be held on a date yet to beconfirmed at the start of Term 2, but will be the information talkonly for those who cannot attend the main session. It is our aimto inform as many families as possible on Wednesday 27 June.An invitation to the evening will be sent home with students, andalso advertised on the school’s Facebook page and Week 10newsletter.

Attendance

Another important aspect of heading into the senior years forour Year 10 students is attendance. I’ve spent many hours thisterm tracking and following up on student attendance. Studentswho don’t attend regularly will not be able to be successful inYears 11 and 12, and may find their enrolment cancelled earlyin Year 11 for failure to attend. For many Year 10 students, it ishitting crunch time where we need to work with families to raiseattendance prior to starting Year 11. I am having meetings withmany families, following the compulsory schooling process anddiscussions around pathways. Being enrolled at school but notattending isn’t a successful pathway. There are many optionsoutside of traditional schooling that are available to students, and if what we have isn’t working then we need to find the rightpathway for students to be successful. I urge parents to discussattendance with their students, and work with the school onmaking choices to improve student outcomes.

Change Level Week

Change level week occurred last week, and many studentstook the opportunity to get a form to move levels. For Year 10in particular, it is important that as many students as possiblebe on levels 1 to 4 to ensure that they receive an invitation tothe RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) Program which willbe occurring next term. Invitations will go out next week, sostudents please make sure that you get your completed changelevel forms into your Case Managers by Friday.

• Students are only required to be in attendance if theyhave assessment on

• Full school uniform rules apply

• Students may exit the school grounds once theyhave completed assessment for the day.

• Students who require bus transportation will not bepermitted to leave

• Students must change out of their school uniformbefore going to any commercial businesses duringthe school day

• Students will be provided with an area to do study ifthey wish to be on school premises outside theirallotted exam schedule

Is your email address up to date?Is your email address up to date with school records for yourstudents? We’d like to remind all parents and carers to ensuretheir contact details, including email address is current withthe school, as report cards at the end of this semester willbe emailed. Hard copies will be available upon request onceschool resumes after the June/July holidays. Report cards willalso be available electronically via the QParents app.

Do you need to email the school? We now have an email address for all general enquiries. If youneed to contact us and are unable to visit the main office, please email [email protected] or alternatively, call the Administration Office on 4194 3777.

Have you registered for QParents yet?Have you registered for the QParents app? This year, we haveintroduced the use of this app, supported by the Departmentof Education. The app allows parents/carers to access featuresincluding your student’s timetable, report cards, pay schoolinvoices, notify the school of your student’s absences, monitorattendance history and check on upcoming school events.

Get on board now to enjoy the ease and convenience thatQParents offers! If you have not yet registered for QParents, theflyer below will provide further information and an outline of thesteps you need to complete.

Student AbsencesDid you know that all student absences must be explained bya parent/carer? This includes late arrivals and early departuresfrom school.

At Hervey Bay State High School the safety and wellbeing ofstudents is of highest priority. Parents/carers need to knowif their child hasn't turned up for school, and we need toknow when and why a child is absent. As a school, it is ourresponsibility to manage and monitor student absences andto ensure parent/carers are aware of their obligations aboutattendance.

Each parent/carer of a child who is of compulsory school agehas the legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled andattends a school, on every school day for the educationalprogram in which the child is enrolled, unless the parent/carerhas a reasonable excuse.

From time to time a student may be absent from school andparents/carers comply with their obligation by providing asatisfactory reason for these absences. Parents/carers shouldprovide a reason for a child’s absence either before or on theday of the absence, or as soon as practicable.

For the convenience of parent/carers, we have a number ofways to report absences:

3

Please remember that students also require a note or phonecall from a parent/carer if they arrive late for school or need toleave early. We cannot allow any student to sign out of schoolearly without parent/carer permission. Please assist us in thisprocess by sending your student to school with a note or makea call to our office in advance granting permission.

Please also be aware that if you need to collect a studentearly from school, arrange this in advance if possible as it cansometimes be difficult to track students down in their classesat short notice which creates delays for you when collecting. The preferable time for early pickups if possible is during eitherrecess 1 or recess 2.

Thank you to all of our parents/carers for supporting us in thisimportant process.

Senior Geography excursion to FraserIsland

Last week, senior Geography students from Years 10, 11 and12 spent three days on beautiful Fraser Island, as part of theirstudies into the management of water catchments, dingoesand tourism on the island. The adventure began at the wreckof the Maheno and then went on to Eli Creek, where studentsconducted water and vegetation testing and interviewedtourists. After lunch at Eurong, we headed to our base camp forthe three days – Dilli Village. This great facility, managed by theUniversity of the Sunshine Coast, treated the students and staffto some wonderful hospitality during our visit. Rangers cameto speak to us the next day; providing a unique insight in tothe dingo population on the island. A bushwalk to nearby LakeBoomajin only got a little rained out in the afternoon, and thatevening’s trivia competition was hotly contested. It was hometime the next day, via the amazing Central Station and the PileValley walk. For some students, it was their first time on FraserIsland and truly an experience that we will all never forget.
