Haddam Killingworth High School

June, 2015

From the Principal…

Dear Parents and Friends:

There are just a few days left of the school year – and the energy in the air at HKHS is palpable! Students are

gearing up for final exams, anxiously anticipating graduation, and planning for summer. Over the next two

weeks, we will celebrate the very many accomplishments of our students and say goodbye to our seniors. Once

again, I am listening to Pomp and Circumstance in the car and gearing up for the last hurrah! We hope you

have had the opportunity to join us for some or all of these celebratory events. Family and friends of seniors are

invited to join us for our commencement exercises on Friday, June 19th

– tickets are required if the ceremony is

inside.

Shoreline Mathematics Challenge 2015:

On Tuesday, June 2nd

, approximately 220 calculus students from ten shoreline high schools descended upon

Haddam Killingworth High School for the 4th

Annual Shoreline Mathematics Challenge. Participants started

the day with a viewing of the submissions in the calculus music video contest, with the hope that their video

would be voted as “best in show” by the judges. Following the videos, students made their way to the field

house for the competition portion (and main event) of the day.

The competition was set up at five different stations where teams of students

were challenged with different tasks. One of the stops required students to

solve a grand scale calculus Sudoku puzzle. Another tapped into their

spatial ability with a 4-ft Soma Cube puzzle, which challenged students to

put irregularly shaped puzzle pieces together to form different geometric

shapes. The other stations included gigantic Tangram puzzles, Dress for

Calculus (students dressed teammates in

crazy outfits based on solutions to

calculus problems) and Helix games

(circular 3D Tic-Tac-Toe based on

solutions to calculus problems.)

Following the competition, students’

college plans for next year were shared,

the winners of the video and math competition were announced, and

students had lunch together in the cafeteria.

The Shoreline Mathematics Challenge is a fun and engaging activity that

was designed by HKHS math teachers, Wendy Adamczyk and Angela

Miller. The event provides an opportunity for calculus students from area

schools to come together and work in teams to solve calculus problems and

puzzles after the AP Calculus testing is completed in May.

Our 2nd

Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta was a huge success

again this year! Mr. Bartholomew’s Physics classes

participated by designing and building boats out of cardboard which were raced in the pool during Street Fest.

We also had five additional teams enter the open bracket of the competition with their creative designs.

Mr. Leavings’ Astronomy students, along with Mrs. Kehrley, visited the 5th

graders at HKMS to present

samples of NASA’s Moon Rocks. Astronomy students also taught in stations about the Apollo program,

including Apollo 13, showcased lunar landing simulations and discussed the formation and the geology of the

moon.

Mr. Leavings’ Astronomy students also visited Central

Connecticut State University’s Copernican Observatory.

Students discussed the search for extraterrestrial
