FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Hello to all in the St Brigid’s community.

Term 3, Week 4

This Sunday is the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

God’s revelation to humanity is a constant, unfolding mystery and full of surprises.

In the First Reading Elijah experiences God in an unexpected way, in the silence of nothingness.

In the Second Reading Paul is agonising over what God’s revelation through Christ means for his people, the

descendants of Abraham.

In the Gospel, Jesus’ divine nature is revealed by him walking on the water. He then astounds Peter by

reprimanding him for having doubted the revelation.

God is full of surprises and pops up in the strangest of places and at the strangest of times.

Where have you encountered God this week? Did you respond like Peter with doubt and disbelief or Elijah who

luxuriated in the presence of God?

What’s on over the following week

On Sunday morning we bid farewell to our visitors from Koriyama Xaverio Catholic School. I believe there were a

few teary eyes as the host family members said good bye to their new friends from Japan. I understand that the

experience of hosting the students from a different culture was an enjoyable one for all concerned.

On Monday 4th

August I attended the opening of the Nerang RSL Sub Branch’s WW1 Centenary Display Centre

in Preece House, Bishoff Family Park, Nerang. This date marks the centenary since Great Britain declared war

on Germany in 1914.

Year 7s returned from their trip to Hobart on Tuesday.

The monthly school board meeting will be held on Wednesday August 6th

commencing with dinner at 6pm.

Bishop Joseph’s will visit St Brigid’s School this Friday as part of his pastoral visit to St Brigid’s Parish this

weekend.

Congratulation to the St Brigid’s students who will receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist for the

first time this weekend.

Assembly prayer this week was led by Year 4C whilst Year 3A will lead next week’s.

Congratulations to Astrabella , Year 4, whose artwork was one of nine chosen, from 83 schools invited to

participate from the Gold Coast, to be included in the closing ceremony of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games

as part of the invitation to attend the next Commonwealth Games to be held in 2018 on the Gold Coast.

Astrabella’s successful submission was announced at a ceremony on the pier at Southport Broadwater Parklands

last Thursday morning. Astrabella is pictured later in the newsletter displaying her artwork.

PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning)

This week we will be expanding on Rule #1: Respect for learning in the classroom. Whilst our Visible Learning

strategies emphasise the traits of a good learner at St Brigid’s our PB4L topic this week stresses the respect that

needs to be afforded to allow others to learn in an environment that is conducive to learning i.e. an environment

that is ordered and promotes enquiry based learning and one that allows the learner to contribute to the learning

process.

Visible Learning

This second lesson is to introduce the characteristics of an effective learner. The aim is for students to become

aware of positive qualities that an effective learner would display. Examples of effective learner’ qualities at St

Brigid’s are: bravery, resilience, risk taking, optimism, confidence, co-operation and persistence. Teachers are

there to facilitate the learning. At St Brigid’s we acknowledge that we, students, staff and parents, are all lifelong

learners and it is important to pass this message onto the students in words and actions.

The problem with being a Cool Kid

There’s no need to worry about your quiet teenager being happy to stay at home with the family and enjoy the

company of a few close friend. Researchers studying 13-year-olds found that those who engaged in ‘pseudo-

mature’ behaviour and were seen as the ‘cool kids’ tended to develop problems with drugs and relationships by

their early 20s.

The researchers tracked nearly 200 13-years-olds for 10 years, gauging how much they valued their popularity,

how important appearance was in seeking out friends and if they used drugs or had romantic relationships. The

study found that young teens who acted old for their age by sneaking into movies, forming early romantic

relationships, shoplifting and basing friendships on appearance were seen by peers as popular.

But as these pseudo-mature teens and their less adventurous counterparts matured, their behaviour was no

longer linked with popularity.

Instead, they were thought to be less socially competent by their peers and had more problems with substance

abuse. The average cool teen, by age 22, had a 45% greater rate of problems due to substance use and a 22%

greater rate of criminal behaviour compared with the average teen in the study.

Teens can be intimidated by these cool kids, and parents are intimidated because they think that these pseudo-

mature kids are on the fast track - but it's really to a dead end. They have the appearance of maturity, but they

Page 3: FROM THE PRINCIPAL - St Brigid's Primary School NO 201424 5...ISSUE NO 201424 – 5 August 2014 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Hello to all in the St Brigid’s community. Term 3, Week 4 This

are not gaining actual maturity. These teenagers spend so much time trying to gain status, they don’t develop the

positive social skills needed for meaningful friendships.

Parents shouldn’t worry too much if their young teens prefer to spend Saturday nights at home watching a movie

or reading instead of going out with friends.

There is a quiet majority of adolescents who are much more functional when they become adults.

Students not to bring own Sports’ Equipment to school

St Brigid’s discourages students bringing in their own sports’ equipment to use during the school day. We have

found that when this occurs in some instances students:

Believe they can make up their own rules resulting in arguments.

Become upset when their equipment is damaged or lost.

Page 4: FROM THE PRINCIPAL - St Brigid's Primary School NO 201424 5...ISSUE NO 201424 – 5 August 2014 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Hello to all in the St Brigid’s community. Term 3, Week 4 This

Mr Gudgeon provides adequate quantities of sports’ equipment to classes that students can access during break

times. Parents’ support and cooperation with this matter is appreciated.

Year 6 Canberra Trip Payment due

Thank you to those families that have finalised payment for their child’s trip to Canberra. The final instalment was

due at the beginning of Term 3 with the school fees. Any parent experiencing difficulty with the payments for this

excursion is encouraged to contact Jo, our Finance Secretary in the front office.

UNSW Science Results

The results are in for the fourteen St Brigid’s students that sat the University of New South Wales Science test on

Wednesday June 4th

. Students involved were awarded 2 Credits, 2 Merits and 10 Participation certificates. I

congratulate all students who undertook the test. These certificates will be presented to students at morning

assembly on Friday August 8th.

UNSW English Test

Twenty eight eager students sat the ICAS English test last week. Responses have been collated and sent away

to be marked with results expected later this term. I congratulate all these students on their enthusiasm and

determination shown in completing the assessments. Qualities we are encouraging in all students as they

become Visible Learners.

Chess Tournament

Chess Club students are reminded to return their permission slip and tournament entry fee of $17.00 to

participate in the upcoming Gardiner Chess Carrara tournament by Friday August 8th

. We wish students well in

this competition and we are confident they will be great ambassadors for our school. Thanks to Mrs McAuley

who has volunteered to supervise students during this event

Visible Learning Update

Learning continues to be an important focus right across our school. Through making it clear what ‘effective

learners’ do we are building students capacity to be effective learners. This in turn improves student learning

outcomes. Our classroom teachers are supporting students to be effective learners through making learning

visible in classrooms. What do I mean by ‘visible learning’? In the classroom this could look like:

Displaying learning goals for lessons, units or activities.

Talking to students about a fixed V Growth mindset

Posters displaying qualities of effective learners.

Learning progressions displayed in language students understand.

Steps on what to do when you are having difficulty as a learner.

Lessons being taught on qualities we strive for as effective learners.

Page 5: FROM THE PRINCIPAL - St Brigid's Primary School NO 201424 5...ISSUE NO 201424 – 5 August 2014 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Hello to all in the St Brigid’s community. Term 3, Week 4 This

.

A Visible Learner is someone who:

Asks questions.

Actively seeking feedback to improve learning.

Articulates what they are learning and why.

Can talk about how they are learning – the strategies they are using to learn.

Can talk about what they are learning and why.

Positively supports their peers learning.

Seeks, is resilient and aspires to a challenge.

Can set goals they can achieve.

Sees errors as opportunities for learning.

Can talk about what their next learning step will be.

Understands the assessment tools used and what their results mean.

Through focusing on these elements at home and school we will allow students to become more effective Visible

Learners.

AIIU Visit

Once again I had the opportunity to host a Japanese student from Koriyama School, Japan. Nuzuna was the

name of the student that stayed with us. We took her to the shops, Natural Arch and Seaworld. I enjoyed the

time I had at home with her. Nuzuna would teach me Japanese and I would teach her English. She showed me

how to make Origami. Nuzuna also liked the food we served here for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I liked that

she was interested in the food we had to offer her, she always took a photo of what we served her. In my

experience I found that it was interesting to learn about the way Japanese find our culture. I recommend that

anyone host a Japanese student. If you host a Japanese student you will have an opportunity of a lifetime. Natasha - 6A

News from Japanese classroom

18 Japanese students joined our Japanese lesson and we all had a great time.

Year 6, 7 started the class with our favourite song [Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes] in Japanese and English.

Year 7 had more advanced interaction with the students with challenging Japanese and Australian quiz. It’s

always valuable to learn trivia in both other culture and your own culture.

Year 5 enjoyed the game using vegetable names in Japanese. Playing games is a great enjoyable way to learn

vocabulary.

Year 6 and 7 also enjoyed playing cards with them. They played Banuki (Old Maid), Shinkei Suijyaku (Memory),

Snap and Go fish. They taught them to each other.

Thank you very much to the families who hosted the Japanese students. I’m sure this would be unforgettable special memory for the Japanese students.

Year 1 News

Mathematical concepts in Semester Two become more concrete and complex, building on the assumption that

children have acquired a firm grasp of numbers to 100. Number patterns are explored throughout each term with

children skip counting in 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. Once these are recognised children are asked to count and

recognize number patterns from any number up to 100. These number patterns become more complex as

children count forwards and backwards. For example: – 48, 46, 44, __. Children are then asked to find the

counting pattern or rule for this example if counting backwards in 2’s. The Mathematics curriculum states that

children need to have acquired concepts by the end of the year. This term is dedicated to strengthening the

children’s understanding of addition and subtraction concepts, doubles, turn-around (e.g. 5+3=8 so 3+5=8 if you

know this then 8-5=3 and 8-3=5). If children have difficulty with a new concept he or she is reminded that

mathematics isn’t magic but takes concentration (looking/listening/thinking), application (working at it) and

practice (do lots of examples). Children also do symmetry and measurement concepts in small groups during

Literacy Block rotations. Modelling is very powerful so take opportunities to show your child where and when you

use mathematics in everyday life. REMEMBER MATHS IS NOT MAGIC.

Year 3 News

Last Wednesday we enjoyed participating in NAIDOC celebrations in recognition of Australia’s Aboriginal and

Torres Strait Island heritage. It was a fun day, full of great activities.

“I liked making the artwork with my painted handprint.” Wilken 3B

“My favourite parts were the dot painting, face painting and fish weaving.” Jack 3A

Congratulations to the students who made it to the finals of the Spelling Bee. We look forward to crowning our

Year Three Champion in the coming weeks.

Year 4 News

Welcome to Week 4. Some of our Year 4 students had a busy time in Week 3. Several students attended the

District Athletics Carnival and proudly represented St Brigid’s. Congratulations to Skye F, Nick H, Gemma L and

Declan M for their efforts on our behalf.

NAIDOC DAY

The school celebrated NAIDOC Day on Wednesday of Week 3. The day started with a liturgy during which all our

Year 4 students showed reverence and respect. Each class participated in 5 rotations which included face

painting, cross painting, mask making, indigenous music and dance and indigenous games, all of which helped

our students develop a better understanding of the culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. During

the last session of the day a team of six children from each class from Year 4 to Year 6 participated in an

obstacle relay race, with 4B the overall winners. Congratulations 4B!

GLASGOW COMMONWEALTH GAMES NEWS

Congratulations go to one of our Year 4 Students, Astrabella G. A competition was held on the Gold Coast asking

students from all schools to produce a piece of artwork representing life here on the Coast. Nine were chosen

from all those submitted and these were used in the Closing Ceremony at the Commonwealth Games. Astrabella

was one of the nine chosen and her work was shown to the world early on Monday morning. A photo has been

included of Astrabella and her fabulous artwork.

Year 5 News

A reminder to all parents that you are invited to morning tea this coming Friday to welcome Bishop Joseph to our

school and our Parish. As was mentioned in last weeks newsletter, Year 5 will have the opportunity to ask Bishop

Joseph questions regarding his migration to Australia. As an extension to our unit on migration, we will be having

a food fantasy day where students will be invited to bring in a plate of food to share with the class from the

country they are doing their research on. This will occur during Week 8, an exact date will be provided soon.

The upper school has been lucky enough to purchase a new reading comprehension resource. Due to the way it

is presented each cardboard page needs to be covered in clear contact to keep it in good condition. We would

ask if any parents or carers have any spare time if they wouldn't mind coming to the library to help cover the

resource. That way we can start putting to its intended use. Thank you in advance for your help.

Year 6 News

Our week was filled with many events such as the District Athletics which a number of our students participated

in. Congratulations to all those who competed and particularly to Will who received Age Champion. On

Wednesday we celebrated NAIDOC day where students were involved in many enjoyable activities. The visiting

Japanese students joined us for our session where we made Jonny Cakes. They were delicious but we could not

convince our guests to have Vegemite on theirs!

As shared leaders, the Year 6s will now be able to use the Year 7 Area during break times. This allows them to

have a quieter space to chat with their friends or to play handball or basketball. The leadership skills shown so

far this year by our students has been outstanding and we are sure they will continue to be good role models for

the younger students.

Earlier in the year some of our students sat the UNSW science test. The certificates will be presented on Friday

8th

August at morning assembly if you would like to attend.

Plans are well underway for our Canberra Trip. Just a reminder that all payments should have been received by

now and the medical and zoo forms should have been completed and returned. Please note that we are unable

to administer any medication other than Panadol without a medical form signed by a doctor. Here is St Brigid’s
