From the Principal This presence of God is a profound experience of being personally loved by God, and the conviction that he is close to us in our daily human experiences - Water from the Rock Dear Parents, Staff and Students, "Daily Human Experiences" in the quote above sounds so simple and not messy...but we know that's not always the case. I hope you see the face of God in your days though, and you are the face of God for others. Last Thursday morning I was riding back from Boreen Point and on my right the full moon was setting as on my left the new day's sun was rising, and God was present in my day. Throughout the week I also had meetings with people that were challenging for a whole range of reasons- and I had the presence of God in my day. For me our call to evangelise comes not only in the wonder moments of our week, but also in the messy moments of our week, when we are the face of God for others. Marcellin Champagnat is a wonderful model of this. In a time and situation where nothing was easy to come by, where the world and days were harsh and challenging in every way, he was able to be the face of God in the simple human interactions that occurred every day. There is something powerful in that. Having a laugh, listening, a smile, empathizing, discussing openly, understanding. These are all things that allow us to bring our hearts to one another, to allow God to be present amongst and between us. There’s a hymn we sing at school which has the words: “Be the light, be the way, in what you do and what you say…” Be God for others is another way to say that. This Wednesday is Champagnat Day and Mass will be held at 9:15. After Mass we will present the Champagnat Awards for the students. On that day, as in all others I hope that God is present to you, and you are the face of God for others. Guidance Counsellors As indicated through email last week Caroline our Guidance Counsellor won’t be with us until next term. We have managed to secure some Guidance support until the end of the term for 3 days a week though. We welcome Ainslee Robinson - Monday & Friday, and Sarah White – Tuesdays to STM. Ainslee and Sarah work in other BCE primary schools on the Sunshine Coast. They are familiar with BCE processes. This means we still have a 2 day short fall for Guidance and so our normally ability to get to students will be slightly reduced. If your child does need support though, be sure to contact us so we can see what we can do. As a community we welcome Ainsley and Sarah. State of Origin Wednesday is the big day. Kids are welcome to accessorise in either Maroon or Blue to support their team. We don’t want full outfits please, as we need to celebrate a Mass on that morning also, so simple accessories are appropriate. Whoever you cheer for, enjoy the amazing sporting spectacle State of Origin is (Go Queensland!). Bjorn Again- This Friday!! Have you got your BJORN AGAIN tickets yet- we are getting excited about this School event coming up at The J? Thank you to the STM community for getting behind this charity in a big way. THANK YOU to Noosa Blue Resort who have offered 2 nights accommodation in a Deluxe Suite for two- valued over $600! This will be raffled off on the night of the BJORN AGAIN show at The J. All raffle ticket sales go towards our STM Let’s Party fundraising so we would like to sincerely thank Noosa Blue for donating this fabulous prize! Have a great week. God’s blessings. Assistant Principal Religious Education Dear St Thomas More Families, Champagnat week is a great week to take time to acknowledge the many and varied ways in which every staff member at St Thomas More helps to bring Champagnat’s dream to ‘Love them all and love them all equally’ to life. Having the value of Humility this week is a perfect lens through which to reflect on the importance of this feast day in the Religious life of our school. During the post revolution era in a tiny Hamlet in the French countryside, Marcellin Champagnat started with a dream to enable God’s love to be known in the lives of young people. After travelling to this area and visiting the tiny home where Marcellin grew up with his family in Le Rosey, you come away with a strong sense of knowing that guided by faith, hope and possibility to follow God’s call, dreams can begin as a small idea in a tiny place.

From the writings of Marcellin and what we know from history about his early work, it seems fair to say that he was a man of incredible strength, deep faith, hope and genuine humility. Marcellin was so deeply affected by the lack of education for young people that he made it his mission to create opportunities for children to be educated, with a strong focus on education in faith. Marcellin’s dream was that children knew that they were deeply loved by God and his work and the work of the Brothers who have followed him has had this at their core. As an example to us of humility, Marcellin did good work simply, he deeply believed in what he was called to do and had a deep love of his work. Marcellin was present to others and went about creating a sense of family within the school communities that were established. Marcellin’s deep devotion to Mary also reminds us that the work that was undertaken was inspired by the story of Jesus, as he often said, ‘our work is all to Jesus, through Mary’.

Every day I have the privilege of seeing our staff supporting children not only as learners but as young individuals who have a story they want to share, by showing care, understanding, compassion and welcome and by going the extra mile to support individuals within our community. Each one of us is called to make a difference in the lives of young people at STM inspired by Marcellin’s example of simplicity, humility, inclusiveness and care. The way we live and breathe the Marist spirit may look and feel different, but we all do this each day

and for this, our children are grateful. This Wednesday morning we will have a whole school mass in the STM centre to celebrate the feast of St Marcellin. Following mass Br Bill Selden from our local Marist community will hand out our Champagnat awards for the term and the Br Brendan award for two Year 4 students. Parents are most welcome to join us for this important celebration of the Religious Life of our community. May the week ahead be filled with many moments of grace and blessing, Ann-Maree

STM Knitting and Wool Craft Club It is a great delight to spend time with the students of STM who are interested in learning to knit, do French knitting and make pom poms. Many students gather each Monday, Wednesday and Friday and are making amazing things with wool. Some of our most dedicated knitters are working to create their own winter scarves – well done to you all! A big thank you to Leanne Roberts and Helen McKenna who come along each week and provide tremendous support and abundant patience to the children. It is a wonderful moment when a child discovers they can create something special with wool and their own hands – these are the great moments that bring joy to my week and remind me how lucky I am to work with young people each day at STM. Ann-Maree

Acting Assistant Principal Administration Driving home from camp on Friday in the quiet of my car I marvelled at the amazing kids we took away for three days and how much they had changed and matured in that short space of time. Being a teacher and a mum I started to write a list in my mind of the things I would need to teach my own daughter before she goes on grade 6 camp next year. Then I pulled in at the servo to get a a lovely coffee and some fuel and I looked at myself in the mirror! Oops! I realised I had been wearing some form of hat for three days, I hadn't brushed my hair in three days! I looked tired, a bit wind and sun burned but happy! It struck me then I didn't need to create a list of things for my kid because the experience of camp teaches us it all. At Emu Gully the motto is "Attitude not ability determines our destiny!" This shines through every activity! This was the sixth time I have braved the cool of Toowoomba and each time I come away with some new self-knowledge and pride in 'Our Year 6 Team'! Pride in the courageous kids who have to dig deep to spend the night away from home, pride in the kids who help their friends through challenging activities, pride in the teachers who leave their families to spend time getting to know their students away from the confines of the school day and pride in parents who trust their kids and the teachers to experience all camp has to offer. Don't get me wrong camp is exhausting, but through the exhaustion, we all learn to dig deep and trust our team to support each other through the challenges. We learn to make new friends and widen our experiences. We learn to laugh at ourselves and not to sweat the small stuff. We are all challenged to step out of our comfort zone and grow a little. Above all we learn that the attitude we bring to each day helps us and those around us! Thank you 'Year 6 Team' for the learning, laughs, attitude and growth! Love your work!

Regards

Michelle Heather

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data All schools nationwide are taking part in the national consistent collection of data on students with disabilities. This type of data collection has always been required by law, however the goal is now to have a consistent method for collecting this data. All Australian governments agree that every child should have a high-quality education and the aim of this data collection is to have better information about students with disabilities in our schools so we can provide effective and adequate adjustments to support their individual needs.

At St Thomas More we intend to include in this collection of data all students that are currently verified with a disability, and those that may not be verified but require a significant level of adjustments to be made to support their medical, social emotional and/or learning needs at school. Students privacy will be maintained throughout the process and furthermore individual student names will not be included in the data that is forwarded to local and federal educational authorities for collation. Our school team will be collecting this data over the coming weeks and we ask parents to read through the attached information flyer and contact the school if you have any further questions.

Music News Firstly, the CHOIR is preparing for a couple of important upcoming events - namely THE BAND AND CHOIR CONCERT on Wednesday evening 20 June from 6.30 - 7.30 p.m., THE GRANDPARENTS DAY CONCERT on Friday morning 27 July from 9 a.m., and THE SUNSHINE COAST CHORAL SPECTACULAR on Tuesday 31 July from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. approx. This is an invitation to all Year 3 to Year 6 students who enjoy singing, to come along to either a TUESDAY LUNCHTIME rehearsal in the Music Room from 11.05 to 11.25 a.m. or a WEDNESDAY rehearsal before school in the Music Room from 8 to 8.45 a.m. This is very important so that you become familiar with the songs being memorised for each occasion. We look forward to seeing many students there. Secondly, the Year 3 to Year 6 students are allowed to audition over the next few weeks for this year’s ST THOMAS MORE’S GOT TALENT show which will take place on Monday 25th June during the first break from 11 to 11.30 a.m. in the Champagnat Centre. Only a few acts will be selected due to the time constraint, so students are to work hard on polishing their singing / instrument playing / dancing / magic / poetry / joke telling in order to potentially show it to the whole school. Auditions will be held in Music lessons during Weeks 9 and 10 … so get rehearsing and let’s see what amazing talent is on offer here at our school.

Regards Petra – Music Teacher.
