From the Principal’s Desk
We have certainly been spoiled with the beautiful sunshine this week. I hope
everyone is enjoying the easing of more restrictions and catching up with family
and friends.
Road Safety
I have had a couple of reports of children crossing the road directly at the Campbell St
roundabout instead of walking up the road a few metres to the Crossing Guard near Fox Way.
This is a much safer option for our children. Please encourage your children to use the manned
crossings around our school.
In-Term Swimming
I am awaiting confirmation that our planned in-term swimming will go ahead in Term 3 during
weeks 5 and 6. Whilst the Education Department is supporting lessons to go ahead, we need to
work with ALAC to plan how lessons might look. We have not yet
finalised our costings for this, but it is usually about $60-65 per
child. Please keep this in mind for your planning.
Uniforms
We are working with our P&C Uniform Sub-committee to streamline and refresh our uniform.
This has resulted from a need to change suppliers. Parents will be able to provide feedback and
be kept informed of any changes on the horizon. In the meantime, our current Dress Code
Policy has not changed. You can view our Policy at the bottom of this web page
http://albanyprimary.wa.edu.au/parent-information/uniforms/
I have noticed quite a few non-uniform items about as the weather cools. Please have your children save their lovely
jeans, pink jumpers, and purple tights for weekends. Grey or green leggings/tights under a skirt, shorts or skorts are
acceptable; as are green long sleeved shirts under the school polo.
Semester 1 Reports
Teachers are busily preparing Semester 1 student reports. This semester, we will
be sending a printed copy of reports home to parents.
From Semester 2, reports will be sent home electronically via your email. More
information will come closer to this time. As always, please inform us if your
contact details change so we can keep you in the loop with all things APS.

Bottle flipping… Students in Room 17 have been conducting data based research to find the optimum level of water inside a bottle to land the most bottle flips. The students needed to find the amount of water that particular fractions of the bottle equalled, and tally their results. Most students found their accuracy of bottle flipping was increased when approximately 1/8th of a bottle was filled.
…and dipping
Room 17 students are also using bottles (and other objects) and learning to use the
properties of oil based spray paint and water to hydro dip items. Students will be using
colours to help camouflage items as part of their HASS unit of work for this term.
Students had the opportunity to practice with an item and colours of their choice.
Mr Holyoake, Room 17 Teacher
P & C News Our P&C is back into holding meetings but unfortunately many of the fun events we had planned are still not able to
proceed due to Government restrictions on activities within a school setting. This includes our Lapathon, Paintstorm
artist incursion and discos. We hope to be able to schedule some of these for Term 3 or 4 and are waiting as patiently
as we can for further announcements.
Our Uniform Shop will also remain closed to in-person sales for the rest of the term. Orders can be placed online
through a Quickcliq account (super easy to set up) and delivered to your child's classroom or held for collection. If you
need to try sizes, please email our fabulous volunteer Rebecca at [email protected] and arrange a
time. Please note: Some items are out of stock and deliveries are being delayed due to Covid-19 so please be
understanding if we cannot supply you, it is out of our hands.
At Monday night's meeting, the report from the Lunch Services Working Group
was tabled and discussed. Naturally, there was a range of opinions however
discussion remained respectful and the meeting proceeded smoothly to a
vote. Our members showed clear support for us to pursue having lunch items
delivered to our school by an external provider. A sub-committee has now
been formed to set the criteria required to select our provider, and Expressions
of Interest will be called for soon. Anyone wishing to join this sub-committee
or suggest external providers is asked to contact us at

Cross Country
What spectacular weather we had for our Cross Country on Thursday 28 May! Our students all demonstrated Personal
Excellence and our Top 10 were congratulated with an elbow shake or foot five. Well done to Melville who won the
shield!
Depending on restriction levels in place, Tuesday 4 August is the proposed Interschool Cross Country date. Stay tuned
for confirmation about this event. Mr Reece Smith, Deputy Principal

Lost Property With the weather changing from rain to sunshine and back again, we’re
noticing that a lot of jumpers and jackets are being left around the grounds
and finding their way to the Lost Property bin. We urge parents and
caregivers to ensure all clothing is labelled so that we can return the lost
articles. Please also remind your child/ren to look for their items in the
Lost Property bin, which is located inside the covered assembly area.

Poster Competition
.
Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. They are spiritually and culturally connected to this country.
Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies.
NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country – a history which dates back thousands of generations.
It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet.
To celebrate the 2020 NAIDOC theme of ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’, all students of
Albany Primary School are invited to design a poster that celebrates this theme.
The artist of the poster judged to have best met the brief will be awarded a prize in
Week Ten of Term Two. All submissions will be exhibited for everyone to enjoy.
Terms and Conditions:
The poster must be A3 size.
The poster must reflect the 2020 theme for NAIDOC Week.
All submissions must be completed entirely by the student.
The judging panel will be looking for effective design, use of colour and
innovation of the theme.
All submissions are due by Monday of Week Nine, Term Two.
Submissions can be left at the front office or delivered to Room 16 to Ms Stein.
The judging panel will be made up of the APS Dreamtime Committee as well as
Aboriginal community members.
Resources to complete the poster can be sourced from school, however this
project will be required to be completed at home as classroom teachers will be
engaged in other NAIDOC related activities.
Get creative people!
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists.
