September SteepleTalk 2019 1 from the pastor This summer brought a lot of change to the Henry family. A new home in a new town with a new church and a lot of new faces is a LOT of change. I don’t advocate making this kind of change too often (although it does encourage decluttering!). With that said, change is not always a bad thing, even if Presbyterians sometimes act like it is. When things change, we get a chance to ask, “What are we doing? Why are we doing this? And how are we doing?” When things change, we get a chance to grow, as individuals, families and churches. We find that we have capacities we didn’t know about and that there are opportunities to which we had been closed off. As a new pastor, I am very aware that just my voice and presence are a lot of change for some people. I have had 50 years to get used to me but it will take you some time! I am also aware that there are new members of our congregation and new visitors who are also part of the change underway at DCPC. Hopefully time will enable us to grow accustomed to who God is making us to be, together, in the years ahead. That phrase, “years ahead,” leads into one of my two other main points for this Steeple Talk. First, that getting to know one another and growing together takes time. It also takes being together. I hope a new program year in the life of DCPC enables you to dig in and find ways to connect that might go deeper and further than in the past. Let’s be together! There are many ways to get involved and getting involved gets us growing together. My final main point is simply a word of thanks on behalf of the whole Henry family. Members and friends of DCPC have been so gracious in the many ways you have welcomed us. From meals to gift cards to notes and simple inquiries about our well-being, we are deeply grateful for your grace and hospitality. It has made the change a lot easier for us and for that, we are thankful. ~ Peter Henry Growing in the Life of Faith In his book Growing in the Life of Faith, Craig Dykstra, who serves as a Vice President for Religion for the Lilly Endowment, explores the intersections of education, worship practices, tradition, and discipline of the Reformed Christian community and how they help people grow in their faith. Of particular importance are the following 13 practices, which help to define who we are as a community of believers: 1. Worshiping God together – including receiving the sacraments given to us in Christ; 2. Telling the Christian story to one another – reading and hearing the Scriptures and also the stories of the church’s experience through its history; 3. Interpreting together the Scriptures and the history of the church’s experience, particularly in relation to their meaning for our own lives in the world; 4. Praying – together and by ourselves, not only in formal services of worship but in all times and places; 5. Confessing our sin to one another, and forgiving and becoming reconciled with one another; 6. Tolerating one another’s failures and encouraging one another in the work each must do and the vocation each must live; 7. Carrying out specific faithful acts of service and witness together; 8. Giving generously of one’s means and receiving gratefully gifts others have to give; 9. Suffering with and for one another and all whom Jesus showed us to be our neighbors; 10. Providing hospitality and care, not to one another but to strangers and even enemies; 11. Listening and talking attentively to one another about our particular experiences in life; 12. Criticizing and resisting all those powers and patterns that destroy human beings, corrode human community, and injure God’s creation; 13. Working together to maintain and create social structures and institutions that will sustain life in the world in ways that accord with God’s will. September 8 is Rally Day, our celebration of the fall program year and when Sunday School Youth Group, and Wednesday after school activities resume. If you haven’t found a place to plug into yet, this fall would be a great time to do so. Read over the above list. What’s one area that you’re being called to work on in the coming year? Perhaps you’ll find that challenge met at a Faith Formation activity!

9:45 Music Team

The 9:45 service is blessed to have an extremely dedicated music team; but would you believe that most Sundays pull from a pool of twelve people? Is there a way you can contribute to the worship team? Do you sing or play an instrument? Any skill level is welcome. Music will be written to meet you where you are. Also, any frequency is welcome, if you only want to play every once in a while, that will be arranged. Contact David if you’re interested: [email protected].

Mid-Week Bible Studies

All Adult Faith Formation Classes will meet on Rally Day, Sept. 8. Some classes will not meet in their usual locations! Connections – will meet on the Gwen Appleyard Patio for a social time to catch up with each other and to hear what’s coming up for the class in the coming year.

Covenant Class - will meet in Lingle Chapel on Sept. 8 and will return to the Congregation House on Sept. 15. The class welcomes Dr. Doug Ottati, the Craig Family Distinguished professor of Reformed Theology at Davidson College, who will present a three-week course on “A Christian Humanism: Wonder, Realism, and Hope.” The course will address what Christian humanism has been historically and what it can be now, and will develop a view of the value of humans, their possibilities and limits in relation to God as Creator, Judge and Redeemer.

Jubilee Class - With an emphasis on an interactive "priesthood of all believers” and a focus on social justice issues, the Jubilee Class seeks to bring together Christian faith and life in the everyday world. The lead-off class in September will discuss J. Louis Martyn’s classic “From Paul to Flannery O’Connor with the Power of Grace.” Before his death in 2015, Martyn was regarded as the preeminent scholar on Pauline apocalyptic theology, in which Martyn finds Paul pointing to an invasion of the new creation God has already begun on this earth. Projected future sessions include discussions of the Toni Morrison lecture series, “The Origin of the Other”; immigration; housing in Davidson; state and national politics (including the 2020 elections); climate change; water issues; and the film Backs against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story. We invite all interested persons to attend our sessions during the Sunday School hour at 9:45 am in Room 201.

Maloney Class – meets in the Parlor:

Sept. 1 – Spared!, Genesis 18:16–19:29

BLYTHE YEAR 6: THE KIDS NEED YOU! Our school year at Blythe got off to a delicious start with a luncheon for the faculty and staff on August 16. Gift cards were raffled off, delicious food from Chef Eric was enjoyed by all, and all of us were happy to reconnect with these teachers and staff members who have become our family over the past five years.

Ten of those teachers, in grades K-4, AND the librarian have asked for help in their classrooms. If you would like to be a part of life in a classroom, and meet some great kids along the way, this opportunity may be for you! The time commitment and exactly what you will do will be between you and the teacher you are connected with. Classroom volunteers in the past have worked with individual children and small groups, as well as helping with clerical tasks, shelving books, and doing whatever else you and your teacher decide would help the classroom.

If this sounds like something you might like, please contact Rosemary Klein ([email protected]) and let me know what grade level you would prefer, and I will connect you with a teacher. This is a great opportunity to make a real difference in a Blythe classroom!

We officially celebrated the 5th birthday of our Blythe Elementary School Partnership on Sunday, May 5th with cake and balloons, but the creativity and the labor happened this Summer. Thanks to project leaders, Charlotte Griffith,

Crissie Abell, Holly Ridgway, Tyler Helfrich, Rosemary Klein, and Catherine Bragg, who met and planned with Blythe staff, bought supplies and organized workdays, and put in the labor to make these "gifts" come to life! Blythe began the school year with colorful and inspirational 5th-grade bathroom makeovers, a Movement Walk for all students, new Spanish/English books, and a freshly painted Sensory Room with bean bags, quiet music, and other peaceful activities. The Kindergarten Courtyard Upgrade is still in progress and should be completed this fall. Davis Pharr, a church member and member of Troop and Crew 58, is helping with the Courtyard for his Eagle Project. He has built four picnic tables and is repairing and staining benches and planters for the area. Thank you, Davis! Thanks, also, to everyone who gave their time and talents to make these "gifts" a reality. We look forward to seeing what the next five years will bring for our partnership!

Amigos Back-to School Kick-Off and School Supply Collection

a GREAT SUCCESS!! On August 19th dozens of happy children came to Huntersville Elementary School for the Amigos Back-to-School Event. You gave so generously to the school supply drive that we were able to fill many backpacks for all the children. There were even some supplies left over that allowed for the school to have extra supplies for other students. Thank you for your sup-port of this important ministry. If you would like to learn more about being a tutor please contact Rosemary Klein at [email protected].

We have enjoyed work throughout the summer at 453 McLelland Avenue in Mooresville. Our house, in part-nership with Williamson’s Chapel UMC, is near completion. We are waiting for the Town of Mooresville to complete some work before our landscaping can be done. That Work day is scheduled for October 5th. At that point, after final inspections, the house will be ready for occupancy. To register to work please click on the Habitat banner at www.dcpc.org, reg-ister as a volunteer, and choose which date that you want to work at 453 McLelland Avenue in Mooresville.

COME JOIN US AND HELP BUILD A BETTER FUTURE!

Nicaragua Partnership Our Nicaragua Partnership provides scholarship funds for children in sev-en communities around the Kilambe region of Nicaragua. Children re-ceive uniforms, shoes, backpacks, and school supplies. Their families re-ceive packets of food and staple items for the home. This gives parents incentive to keep their children in school rather than take them out to work in the fields. Here are some pictures of the recent food packet dis-tribution. Keep your eyes and ears open for dates for upcoming trips to Nicaragua.

When was the last time someone really listened to you? We’re talking about that undistracted, full-attention kind of listening. That’s one of the ways Stephen Ministers care for others.

We need Stephen Ministers to care for people in our church and community by listening, really listening, to someone who is hurting. Will you consider serving in this way?

DCPC has been training Stephen Ministers since 2006, and the need for people to serve is greater than ever. Our next class begins in September and we hope you will consider being part of it if you feel you might be called to help others in this way. The class will meet each Tuesday evening, 7:00-9:00 p.m., for 4 months. Stephen Leaders serve as facilitators during each session, and the training is very comprehensive, equipping participants with the skills to effectively listen to people dealing with a variety of stressful life situations.

To read one Stephen Minister’s story, click here. If you’d like to know more about Stephen Ministry at DCPC or join our training class this fall, please contact one of our Stephen Leaders: listed below.

With a grateful heart, we celebrate Julie Hogan and wish her well in future endeavors. Julie has resigned as our Childcare Coordinator after 11 ½ years of service. Although we are sad to lose her, our church is fortunate for all she has given. Please say a prayer of thanksgiving and blessing for Julie as she pours her energy into volunteer work and a long-standing full time job.

Welcome Babies and Toddlers! The Children’s Ministry Committee is committed to and working with our Weekday Preschool to create warm and ample spaces. The infant crib room in room 13 is stocked with a rocking chair, cribs and changing table. Our 1-2 yr olds now have expanded space in room 12. Our childcare entrance will remain at room 14, but more space is ready for our 9:45 am crowds. With a new DCPC baby in August and more on the way, we are committed to safe, ample and friendly spaces.

A Fond Farewell to our Education Hall Murals For 17ish years, DCPC has enjoyed murals upstairs in the children’s ministry and main hallways. These murals (and coordinating decorations throughout the floor) were “a big labor of love,” according to artist and member Linda Griffeth. The paintings enhanced the “Faith Walk” Sunday School curriculum and experience. Children came to church and stepped back into Biblical times, rotating between the temple, movie theater, art, drama, computer, and mission rooms. Betsy Hazelton designed and led the effort on the fishers of men piece across from the library, a rich scene of life and work in Biblical days. Karen Fesperman, Linda Steber, many children and artists joined in the work.

The Life of Jesus mural (across from rooms 206-208) is a still present fruit of their labor. Lynn Andrus, a beloved retired art teacher and long-time member of DCPC contributed the four walls of artwork, depicting creation, stories of Genesis, “a little child will lead them” and Noah’s ark. What tremendous gifts and beauty! In February 2018, the Children’s Ministry Committee took on the task of creating 3-year goals in the areas around family/parent support & training, outreach, meeting demands of increasing participation, mission, and updating physical spaces. We painted and redecorated room 208 in August 2018. This summer, we celebrate the murals and look toward a new vision that will again include member artwork and design. Look for more information coming soon! In the meantime, let’s give thanks for the

beauty and designs of the past. If you’d like to be a part of creating the future, please contact Jenny Alexander or Betsy Hazelton.

Looking Ahead to the New Year: Making it Personal Many of us know the story of Jesus and Zacchaeus, the "wee little man" of the Sunday school song who climbed a tree so he could see Jesus as he passed through Zacchaeus' town. Zacchaeus was a tax collector and despised by his whole community, so he probably thought that climbing the tree was as close as he was going to get to Jesus that day. But he and everyone else in the crowd was shocked when Jesus stopped at the foot of the tree, looked up at Zacchaeus, and invited himself and the disciples over for dinner. Before they made it to dessert, Zacchaeus declared his regret at cheating the people in his community and declared he would go above and beyond to make amends. Think about what Jesus did for Zacchaeus . . .

• Jesus identified Zacchaeus in a way that communicated value. • Jesus instinctively addressed what mattered to Zacchaeus. • Jesus took the time to enter into Zacchaeus’ everyday context. • Jesus responded to Zacchaeus in a way that removed his shame. • Jesus believed in Zacchaeus’ potential to do good.

What if DCPC decided it could do the same for the children and teenagers in our community? That’s our vision for youth ministry this year and we're capturing it with a simple phrase: “It’s Personal.” Making it personal is a call for all of us to . . .

• identify someone in a way that communicates value. • discover what matters to someone to prove they really matter. • take the time to understand someone’s everyday context. • respond to someone in a way that replaces shame with hope. • believe in someone’s potential to live a remarkable story. • When we follow Jesus' lead, we can expect to see Jesus act.

A Look Back at the Montreat Youth Conference by Victoria Cruz-Solano

Montreat 2019 was my second time attending this youth conference. Before going I wasn’t completely sold on the idea, but looking back I’m so glad I went. Montreat is a “thin” place where you feel closer to God. You are surrounded with other people from other churches and you worship together every day and discuss the messages with a small group. The best part about being in small groups is the eye-opening discussions. Even if I didn’t fully understand the messages we heard that day, many people in small group would share their insights and help me to understand. Back home group was very powerful because it gave us a chance to reflect on the events from the day.

Getting away from the busyness of life to focus on God and become closer to many people was such an amazing experience that I am beyond grateful for! That week taught me how forgiving and unconditional God’s love truly is. I’m so glad I went to Montreat because it strengthened my bond with God and gave me the guidance I needed as I prepare to move on to college.

Students are back! The campus of Davidson College is buzzing with activity, and a new year of UKirk Campus Ministry is off to a great start. The Campus Ministry Committee at DCPC welcomed first-years and their families to campus with hospitality tables during dorm move-in. New and returning students were further welcomed with a lunch following worship on August 25.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO

The annual UKirk Fall Retreat will be coming up September 13-15. Stay tuned for updates in the October Steepletalk.

HOW WE'VE EXPERIENCED GOD

Community! As new students join UKirk Campus Ministry, the returning students have gone out of their way to show them that they belong and are loved.

WHERE PRAYERS ARE NEEDED

Classes have begun at Davidson and at colleges around the country. Please pray for imagination and sustaining energy for students, faculty, and staff. Pray for the student body at Davidson College, as well as members of DCPC who are away at college learning about God's good world.

There is a “tree” growing in the main hallway outside the church office, and everyone is invited to nurture the tree along! The “tree” is actually a bronze tree with the names of people who al-ready have committed to the 1837 Legacy Society Endowment Fund for Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Everybody is invited to participate in the Legacy Society. Details are available in the brochures that are posted beside the tree. A planned estate or beneficiary gift of any amount will include you in the Legacy Society. All planned gifts are welcomed and greatly appreciated. Please take a look at the tree and please consider picking up a brochure. You also may contact Ed Wadsworth at [email protected] or Trish Jones at [email protected] for additional details.
