Five Sundays in May

There is a common saying in Iowa, if you don’t like the weather just stick around for it will change quickly! This summer, perhaps this saying could be applied to our Sunday worship services. During the time Pastor Jan is on sabbatical, we are grateful to the many elders who have accepted an opportunity to lead worship. Most Sundays, there will be a team of three who have worked together to prepare liturgy, music and the message for the week. Please come and show your support for them as they step out in faith to serve in a way many have never served before. Keep these good folks in prayer this summer. Here is a glimpse of what to expect in May!

May 1 May Day. Rev. Dr. Jackie Smallbones will be beginning this Sabbatical journey! Jackie, a part of the religion faculty at Northwestern College, is no stranger to our pulpit. Dr. Karissa Carlson and our clerk, Mike Cunningham will be joining Jackie in leading worship.

May 8 Rob Bixenman will be bringing the message on Mother’s Day. Rob is a ruling elder at PUCC and serves as our church treasurer. He is often seen around church with his wife, Janelle and children Sophie, Simon and Jorja. Rob is employed as President of Am-bank’s Insurance Services. Elders Beth Kehrberg and Jerry Scholten will be assisting Rob in worship .

May 15 Youth Sunday! Each year we look forward to this Sunday when our youth lead worship. This year will be especially special because we will be celebrating Pentecost!!! This is the Sunday we remember how the Holy Spirit was given and the church was born! Like other years, you are encouraged to wear flame colors that day ~ red, orange and yellow! Our youth will be sharing experiences from Sunday School and confirmation class. They will have some special songs to sing and perhaps will throw in a few surprises! Thanks to the Christian Education commission for putting this worship time together, Deb Thompson, Pam Jeneary, Alissa Wells, Pam Kellen and Arlo Swalve.

May 22 Mission Sunday Dennis and Eileen Sohl have recently returned from Israel/Palestine, having attended the PC(USA) Mosaic of Peace Conference. They will share slides, experiences and impressions. This newsletter includes other articles related to this trip. Donna Rasmussen, chair of the Mission Commission will be assisting in worship on this special day.

May 29 Memorial Day Weekend On this holiday weekend Jeff Peters will be bringing the message. Jeff is currently serving as a ruling elder and is a member of the finance commission. Jeff and his wife Teresa enjoy living near their children and five grandchildren. Jeff is a CPA and a partner at Williams & Company.

This Lenten season, Jeff and Teresa hosted a small group with Lowell and Pat Penning on prayer. Lowell and Pat, also elders, will be joining Jeff in leading worship this weekend. Jeff’s brother, Randy Peters from Sioux City will be sharing special music.

PER CAPITA CONTRIBUTION

In the Presbyterian Church, each church is part of a larger connectivity called the Presbytery; and each church contributes to the cost of the Presbytery, just as our congregation contributes to the operating costs of our church. This year, our assessment is $32.37 per person, which we pay to the Presbytery of Prospect Hill. Your contribution helps pay for this assessment. Note from Pastor Jan

There is so much to say this month as I begin a 3-month sabbatical. First of all, I want to say thank-you over and over again. Thanks for offering me this time. Thanks for taking on extra responsibilities to make this possible. Thanks for your love, support and prayers! Thanks for stepping into new territory with faith.

I also want to give you a little glimpse of what I will be doing. While the main purpose of a pastor’s sabbatical is rest, a time of learning is also encouraged. At the beginning of my journey, I plan to spend 5 days at St. Martin’s Monastery in Rapid City, South Dakota for the purpose of a spiritual retreat. During this time, I will meet daily with my spiritual director, Sister Margaret. We met together monthly during my previous call in Rapid City. I look forward to this time with her. I am planning to keep a discipline of silence during the remainder of this retreat. This is something I have never done before, but feel it will offer the opportunity to center, seek and truly listen to God.

There are two learning weeks planned. One will be later in May and the other in early June. I’m looking forward to both. The first week will take me to Camp Calvin Crest near Fremont, Nebraska, where I will be participating in the Mediation Skills Training Institute for Church Leaders. This is led by staff from the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center in Lombard, Illinois.

The second week will find me at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska attending Pastor’s School. This opportunity is sponsored by the Omaha Presbyterian Seminary Foundation. The faculty this summer includes some people I know and some of whom I look forward to meeting. Rev. Dr. Nancy Ramsay was one of my seminary instructors (a favorite, no less)! She will be teaching a class called “Graceful Improvisation: Faith Resources and Perspectives on Aging Across the Lifespan.” Other classes will include “Insights from Matthew for Present Day Discipleship,” and “The 10 Keys to Highly Effective Ministry.” I’m also looking forward to meeting a well-known preacher and author of many books on preaching, Rev. Dr. Tom Long. He will serve as adjunct faculty. I’m getting excited just writing about this!

In July, a friend and I are planning on attending a retreat at Prairiewoods Retreat Center near Hiawatha, Iowa called “Church on Two Wheels.” This will give me an opportunity to get out in the fresh air and beauty of Eastern Iowa on my bicycle.

The remainder of the sabbatical is open for rest, renewal and adventure! While I will be away from the church this summer, you all will remain close to my heart. Know you will be in my thoughts and prayers throughout the summer.

The Board of Pensions Assistance Program offers a Sabbath Sabbatical Support Grant to support pastors serving smaller congregations. I’m pleased to share that we received a grant of $3,000 to be used to help accomplish this sabbatical.

In April, Ms. Lisa and Pastor Jan made their final visits for the year, and the children had their hearing tested by Northwest AEA. The 4 & 5 year olds took two field trips: one to Floyd Valley Hospital and one to the YMCA! Both trips were very educational and very fun! The 4 and 5 year olds also will had a scavenger hunt around the church for the letter X: X marks the

spot! We conducted parent-teacher conferences at the end of April and had a great turnout! It is so amazing to see how much progress the students make throughout the year!

The Spring Open House will be Wednesday May 4 from 5:00-6:30pm.

In May, the students only attend for half the month, so time flies! Angela Loutsch from the YMCA will visit all the classes to talk about summer and pool safety. Then, we will celebrate Moth-er’s Day. The 4 & 5 year olds will sing at Plymouth Manor on May 9, and each class will have a program for their parents on the last day of school.

We had an incredible school year! Thank you to the members of PUCC for all your support through prayer, through labor, and through monetary donations. We really appreciate all you do for Noah’s Ark Preschool!

Children’s Chapel - Worship Ministry

Our Children’s Chapel ministry will dismiss for the sum-mer after our May 22nd lesson. So many wonderful Bible stories were shared with the children by the many talented teachers this year. The Christian Education Commission would like to recognize these special mem-bers of our congregation. They are: Audrey Scholten, Eva Mouw, Linda Smith, Dacia Bolton Bates, Alissa Wells, Lucille Swalve, Karen Peters, Beth Kehrberg and Pam Jeneary.

May Story Schedule:

5/1: Communion Sunday ~ No Children’s Chapel

5/8: Ascension ~ Luke 24: 44-53

5/15: Youth Sunday ~ No Children’s Chapel

5/22: Baptism ~ Acts 2: 38-39

Please thank them as they have.. “Served the Lord with gladness” Psalm 100: 2

Growing in Grace and Gratitude during the Sunday School Year!

“Cruisin with Jesus in Grace and Gratitude” has been our Sunday School theme this year. When the children attended Sunday School, they met, discussed and explored God’s grace and were invited to learn that in the Presbyterian church our foundation is where God’s grace and our gratitude are the heartbeat of our faith, life and worship.

The Christian Education Commission appreciates all the teachers that have helped each child learn more about God’s grace and love given freely to us from our Lord and Savior.

Those teachers are: Preschool/Kindergarten: Christine Wacker and Kyle Kuenen, First and Second Grade: Patty Bendlin and Rachel Cunningham, Third-Sixth Grade: Pam Jeneary and The R.O.C.K. (7th-12th grade) Alissa Wells and Alyce Kass.

Music and Worship Leaders: Deb Thompson and Rachel Cunningham. We would also like to thank Janelle Bixenman, Pam Kellen, and Jackie Albers for helping out as substitute teachers this year!

Confirmation Update

Our five confirmands have completed their

first year of confirmation. This past school

year, Seth Albers, Carter Alcorn, Emma

Bendlin, Sophie Bixenman, and Owen

Wacker have met with Pastor Jan the first

and third Wednesday evenings each month.

This month the class has begun a class

statement of faith, which currently includes

their thoughts on scripture and on God.

The last evening of class, everyone enjoyed

pizza and cookies! Confirmation will resume

in September. Confirmation Sunday is ten-

tatively set for April 30, 2017! Good job,

class!

2016 Mosaic of Peace

From April 5th through the 15th, we had the honor and pleasure to be part of a 30 person group representing the Presbyterian Church

(USA) at the Mosaic of Peace Conference in Palestine and Israel. We can’t begin to condense the 10 days we were in country, each 14 hours

long into a few brief paragraphs, except to say our perspectives and understanding of the conflict in the Mid East has been enlightened.

We spent a few hours on most days visiting the Holy Sites in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, the West Bank and Hebron to gain a per-

spective of the importance of these sites to the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths. Most of our time was spent meeting with community lead-

ers and residents of the different faiths and heard of their lives, their hopes and dreams. We got to experience the Separation Wall between

Israel and Palestine and the challenge of the checkpoints between the two sides first hand.

While we were not allowed into the Gaza Strip, we did hear about their struggles, challenges and why they

feel terrorism is one of their few remaining tools to spread their message. Their message seemed in opposi-

tion to the residents of the West Bank, who are awaiting a leader similar to our Martin Luther King to surface

and lead them. But time is running out. The Christian population has declined from 20% to 2% of the popula-

tion and the Muslim population is also in decline. We also heard first hand why the Israeli’s believe they are

entitled to occupy the land. Christians and Muslims live and work together in Palestine, and a few have also

established Israeli friendships when they are allowed into Israel.

We hope to convey some of our impressions with those who gather to worship on Sunday, May 22, and

share some of our photos . Thanks for all of you who supported us and prayed for us.

" I'M INVISIBLE “

It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on the phone?' Obviously not; no one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all. I'm invisible. The invisible Mom. Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this? Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.' I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated summa cum laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going, she's going, she's gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England. Janice had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself as I looked down at my out-of-style dress; it was the only thing I could find that was clean. My unwashed hair was pulled up in a hair clip and I was afraid I could actually smell peanut butter in it. I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you this.' It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe. I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription: 'To Charlotte, with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.'

In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work: No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names. These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished. They made great sacrifices and expected no credit. The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything. A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spend-ing so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it.' And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.' I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you, Charlotte. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become.'

At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride. I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on. The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree. When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My Mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table.' That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, 'You're gonna love it there.' As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

Fr. Gregory Boyle has written, “The Beatitudes should not be rendered as ‘Blessed are the peacemakers.’ Greater precision in translation would say, ‘You’re in the right place if … you are single-hearted in your work for peace.’ The Beatitudes is not a ‘spirituality’ after all. It’s a geography. It tells us where to stand.”

30 members of the Presbyterian Church (USA) from across the country and from Columbia traveled to Israel and Palestine from April 4-16 to witness for peace and wholeness in a land call “HOLY”. SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE!

Church camp is a wonderful opportunity for children and

youth to grow in their faith and to make some lasting

friends! Camp offers time away from the busy schedules

young people often have today. Camp provides a unique

blend of fun, adventure and experiencing the presence of

God.

The leadership of PUCC feels so strongly about the camp

experience, two scholarships are made available to

families. One scholarship provides 50% of the camp

registration fee. The other scholarship, given by the

Deacon’s pays for 25% of the cost. Families pay the

remaining 25% of the cost. If your child is part of our chil-

dren’s ministry in this church, please bring your completed

registration to the office. There will be one more form for you

to fill out in order for us to process the scholarship. Please

call the office at 546-6624 if you have any questions.
