The latest Australian overseas arrivals figures show some 7.9 mil- lion people visited Australia in the 12 months ending in Jul, up 10.6% on the previous year—and New Zealand continues to be Australia’s top inbound market, for now. The results are the strongest annual growth rate since Mar 2005, says Aus- tralia’s Tourism & Transport Forum. New Zealanders made 1,327,500 trips for the year under review (up 3.3%), but China arrivals grew a substantial 23.2% to 1,160,600, putting pressure on New Zealand’s stronghold as Aus- tralia’s single biggest inbound market. The UK was the third biggest market (up 5.4% to 708,300); followed by the US (up 15.5% to 670,900) and Singa- pore (up 15.3% to 432,000). “The increase in departures for Aus- tralia continues to demonstrate Ki- wis’ appetite,” says Tourism Australia New Zealand manager Jenny Aitken. “There is so much great campaign activity driving aspiration and acti- vation for Australia and its regions whether it be for events, exhibitions, culture, shopping or our great food and wine offering—Australia deliv- ers.” Aitken says the combination of ‘the great efforts of airlines, industry and STO campaign activity keeps our offering desirable’. The TTF meanwhile is looking to con- tinue the tourism momentum, point- ing out that while the Chinese market is on a ‘rocket trajectory towards the top of the league table’, Australia still only attracts less than 1% of Chinese travellers. It has released an economic plan with initiatives like slashing fees and charges which add to the cost of travelling to Australia; investing in tourism marketing; building visitor infrastructure and public transport; and recognising the importance of improving the visitor experience at its international gateways. Kiwis Still Number One—For Now Typhoon For Taiwan The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is warning Kiwis that Typhoon Meranti is expected to start im- pacting Taiwan from today. Strong winds, heavy rain and storm surges are expected, and Kiwis in Taiwan are advised to follow the advice of local authorities and seek suitable shelter. They should also update their SafeTravel registration information. Emergency numbers in Taiwan are 119 for fire and ambulance, and 110 for police. See safetravel.govt.nz Utah The Happiest State Utah, Minnesota, North Dakota, Hawaii and Colorado are the five happiest states in the US, according to WalletHub, which analysed the 50 states, and DC, across 28 key metrics of happiness. Utah may enjoy a wide array of scenery, national parks and outdoor activities; but it took the title because of factors including that it had the lowest incidence of heart attacks and divorce. Idaho, Iowa, Ne- braska, South Dakota and California round out the top 10. India Free SIM CardsThe Indian government will be handing out free SIM cards to foreign visitors arriving in the country on e-tourist visas from the end of this month, Exotic Holidays has advised. SIM cards will be issued through state-owned telecommunications company BSNL. Visitors will receive their SIM, preloaded with talk time, along with a welcome kit and infor-mation on how to enjoy their stay in India safely and comfortably. Foreign tourists have long lamented the diffi-culty in obtaining SIMs in India, says Exotic, and it’s believed the initiative will go a long way to promoting tour-ism to the country.

Growth in Kiwi visitor numbers to Argentina has seen the National Institute of Tourism Promotion of Argentina plan an agent event in Auckland, to be held later this month. Argentina saw a 204% increase in travellers from New Zealand during the first quarter of 2016; which the tourism body says can be largely at-tributed the last Dec’s launch of Air New Zealand’s thrice weekly direct flight connecting Auckland to Buenos Aires. The roadshow will be held in Auck-land 26 Sep, allowing agents to meet face-to-face with industry partners; while wholesalers will be invited to attend workshops. There will be the chance to learn about Argentina’s differing landscapes, from the wil-

derness of Patagonia, to the Iguazu Falls, the glaciers of Perito Morena and the cultural and food capital, Buenos Aires.Argentinian partners attending the roadshow include Antarpply Expedi-tions, Acrossar.com, Eurotur, Gador Viajes, Alchemy by Infoba DMC, Kallpa, Quarum Travel, Travel Mark Tours, Cynsa Tour Operator and Qui-mbaya Tours. VX Pax Vs AS DealA group of Virgin America customers are reportedly trying to block Alaska Air’s purchase of the carrier, saying removing it from the market would be ‘substantial and foreboding’.The group of 42 consumers have filed a lawsuit in San Francisco, and say the merger would reduce the number of carriers serving Hawaii and the US, reduce capacity leading to higher fares, and deprive passengers of the ‘unique flying experience’ offered by VX. The merger was expected to close in early Q4, and AS has said it doesn’t expect the lawsuit to upset the timetable for receiving the neces-sary approvals from the Department of Justice.

Oz Fares From $199Emirates has Australia fares on sale to 15 Sep with levels from $199 one-way ex Auckland to Sydney/Melbourne or Brisbane; or ex Christ-church to Sydney. Business class fares are from $599 one-way ex AKL-MEL/BNE/SYD and CHC-SYD. See the GDS for details.

Mexico’s Tourism Ministr y is studying the potential of the New Zealand market as increased flight access to the US helps drive more Kiwis to Central America.Javier Esteban Guillermo Molina, director general of the Unit of Inter-national Affairs and Cooperation, Ministry of Tourism, has been in New Zealand over the past few days and says Mexico is ‘very interested’ in attracting more Kiwi visitors. A little over 1000 Kiwis visit each year, but there has been growth in recent years, he says—and with around 70,000 Australians visiting each year, ‘there is a big opportunity here’.Air New Zealand’s new Houston flights in particular open up the des-tination for Kiwis, as it’s one of the most-connected airports to Mexico, says Molina. Despite the easier access

there are challenges faced in growing Kiwi travel to Mexico, and the main one is in driving more awareness of Mexico as a destination, he says.“I think there’s nobody here telling our story, we want to create awareness of that. We want more people to get to know Mexico, we believe we have a lot to offer Kiwis.”

. . . Security PerceptionMolina also acknowledges that it can be a scary destination for agents to sell to their clients, as there’s some nega-tive perceptions around safety.“We understand that there is a chal-lenge in our security perception and there are a lot of challenges in how they see our country from afar,” he says. “Our tourism destinations are safe. We are the ninth most visited tourism destination in the world, and 32.1 million people [the number of international visitors last year] can’t be wrong about Mexico.”While there are some dangerous spots, Mexico is a big country and ‘you cannot say if there is a problem in Christchurch then you can’t come to Wellington’, he says. The country is considering launching advertising campaigns here at some point, and is currently ‘studying the

Mexico Eyeing Kiwi Market

market, we’re studying how New Zea-landers make their decisions’, he says. It’s also working with the trade, in-cluding supporting Viva Expeditions and Chimu Adventures to host agents at a Day of the Dead function in Auckland on 03 Nov.“We need to increase our presence and we are developing a marketing strategy to help [agents] sell Mexico,” he says. “We are developing resources and tools for them to help them sell Mexico. We want to help them.”Viva’s Rachel Williams, pictured above with Molina, says the company has seen huge growth in demand for Mexico over the last 12 months. “We want to support agents in order to develop this further,” she says. “This starts with our Day of the Dead func-tion and will continue with ongoing promotion, destination training, roadshows, famil opportunities and more.”

flying with Air New Zealand.

Last year we were lucky enough to have several of our Visit Anaheim partners down to Auckland for a one night industry destination workshop/update.We were disappointed they weren’t able to tour the country, and so devised a plan whereby we filmed all their presentations and had made them into one so you can have the same experience as those who attended in Auckland! The presentations are short and can be stopped at any time and resumed. At the end of each presentation is a short quiz for you to take. Then submit the quiz and you are in the draw!

Wh i l e E a s t e r n C a n a d a h a s previously been overlooked on Canadian itineraries, or left for the second visit, it is now emerging as a hot destination for those seeking more culture and cuisine dur-ing their Canadian journey, says World Journeys. As a result, and after its Canada ex-pert Sue Barnaby visited Quebec City earlier this year, World Journeys has released a number of new Eastern Canada packages to its website. Op-tions include culinary city stays in Montreal and Quebec City, Niagara Falls, the National Parks of New-

foundland and whale watching. In addition, and set to be a highlight, is the new Christmas in Ontario trip, travelling roundtrip from Toronto, where clients will take in Niagara Falls and Algonquin Provincial Park, with Christmas Eve eggnog, wild salmon, moonlift bonfire and torch-lit skate, a Champagne Christmas brunch followed by backcountry ski-ing, sauna and a turkey feast ending with Ontario ice wine. “The historic cities of Montreal and Quebec with their French Quarters are absolute highlights, with their distinctly charming small towns of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island,” says the wholesaler.World Journeys, in conjunction with Air Canada, is hosting an agent famil to Eastern Canada later this month, aiming to inspire key agents to sell the destination.E-mail [email protected]
