Jim Collins STATE DEPUTY Dear Brother Knights,

Texas is at the threshold of reaching 100,000 members in August 2013,

with the bragging rights as the largest jurisdiction in the Americas. It is not

just being the largest jurisdiction. it is Columbianism at its best and the

continued growth of our membership is necessary for future generations of

Brother Knights. Looking back at the previous fraternal years, we have

achieved outstanding new member growth and the downside of this growth is

the lack of retention of our members.

The overall growth of the Knights of Columbus depends not only on

recruiting new members, but also on retaining our current members. The

retention process starts the day he joins the Order. How often have we

initiated new members into the Order and no one makes that phone call to

invite him to a council meeting and his family to the activities planned for the

church and community? How many council’s give the new member a packet

with contact information of council officers, chairmen, and a calendar of

events for the fraternal year? If this is not part of your recruitment plan, then

the council officers need to develop a new member packet for him to take

home to his family.

Retention of our members is most important to the overall growth of our

Order. It is essential a retention committee is appointed to examine reasons

why Knights become inactive and let their membership lapse. This committee

plans programs to conserve the council's membership and anticipate and

solve problems that may cause membership suspensions. The deputy grand

knight should be named to the position of retention chairman and his

committee is composed of the council's trustees.

The financial secretary should provide the retention committee with a list of

members that are being reviewed for suspension because they are behind in

their dues. Contact these members and discuss their …

reasons for being inactive. Ask the proposer to get involved and urge them to

become active again. I have heard the statements that the Texas State

Council will not allow any suspensions. For the record this is not true! Yes,

we do have a requirement for you to follow when submitting a Brother Knight

for suspension and it is necessary to follow the procedure and make sure your

district deputy is included in the process. Grand Knights, I refer you to the

Texas State Council 2013-2014 Star Guide, pages 31-35.

Look at your current programs and activities to evaluate whether your

council's resources and members are being fully used. Do members express

interest in these programs? Are a majority of the members participating?

What type of council image do these programs project to the community? Are

these programs meaningful, sincere, and diversified enough to appeal to all

council members?

Some members withdraw or become suspended from the Order because

they feel uninformed or uninvolved. Educate council members so that they

have enough knowledge to take the initiative and become active. Recruit

lapsed members just as you would new prospects. Sell the organization to

former members. Ask them what they enjoyed most about their participation

in the past. Keep questioning on a positive basis. Emphasize the aspects of

the organization the member is most likely to miss in allowing his membership

to lapse.

District Deputies and Grand Knights, you are not expected to have all the

answers of your appointed and elected office and this is the reason the 2013-

2014 Fraternal Year Organizational Meeting included District Deputy and

Grand Knight training modules. These tools have been developed to assist

you during the fraternal year to ensure you are familiar with the monthly

meeting requirements, reporting deadlines, membership recruitment, and

charity and program planning for the fraternal year.

These items will not just happen, you must be the catalyst that starts the

program in motion. Council meetings should be interesting and address the

current year council and parish calendar. If a member asks himself “Why am

I here?” then something is wrong. In addition to the Texas State Council

training tools the Supreme Council has provided District Deputies and Grand

Knights with a Fraternal Leader Success Planner. If you implement the

planning, reporting, and activities set forth in the planner you can achieve Star

Council and Star District.

Worthy Grand Knights, Texas is poised to have its “Best Year Yet” and to

be part of the success you need to work closely with your council officers,

district deputy, and Pastor. As a team we will succeed, our Order will continue

to grow, and with a retention plan in place we will retain our members.

Jim Collins, State Deputy

Brother Knights and Ladies,

Fifteen months ago after a kickoff meeting with the

Supreme Secretary, Texas started the planning for

the 131st Supreme Convention as the host

committee. With only a set of guidelines in-hand Co-

Chairman and State Secretary Terry Simonton and I

started the planning process. The final meeting was

in July 2013 and knowing we had reached a point in

the planning phase that we were as ready as we

could be for the opening day. So with fingers

crossed the doors were opened!

Many months of individual volunteer commitments

to the planning meetings, volunteer coordination, and

that Texas enthusiasm to be the “Best of the Best”,

committee volunteers from around the state came

together as a team and as they say the “Rest is

History.” Many of you traveled long distances and

worked behind the scenes to ensure the success of

this convention and a big thank you goes out to all for

an outstanding job and for being there through long

hours when assistance was needed. There were so

many “thank you and outstanding best convention we

have attended” comments I lost count, especially “the

friendliest people” that comment deserves a BIG

THANK YOU for giving your time and talent these

past fifteen months of meetings and planning.

On behalf of myself and Duchess and Co-

Chairman Terry Simonton and Estelle, our thanks to

all volunteers from around the state. It has been a

pleasure serving with you to bring forth a very

successful 131st Supreme Convention.

Vivat Jesus,

Jim Collins, State Deputy

SD’s Reflections on the Supreme Convention

Thank You to All Our Volunteers As the 131st Convention began in San Antonio,

Texas, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson spoke of the

Knights' record-setting year, in which Knights

donated more than $167.5 million to charity and

volunteered more than 70 million hours of their time

in service including a new record for total

membership of 1,843,587, an insurance milestone of

more than $90 billion of life insurance in force, and

the expansion of the Knights of Columbus into

Ukraine and Lithuania.

For the 13th consecutive year, our Order’s

charitable contributions have grown. While charitable

giving in the United States grew by 2 percent last

year, charitable donations from the Knights of

Columbus grew three times as much, by 6 percent.

Volunteer time donated by Knights of Columbus also

climbed to a new record high, reaching 70,113,207

hours. Independent Sector values each hour

donated in 2012 at $22.14. That means that the time

donated by Knights to charity last year was worth

$1,552,306,402.98, and the value of the more than

673 million hours donated in the past decade totals

$13,348,436,513.58.

The Supreme Knight highlighted various charitable

programs carried out by Knights in more than a

dozen countries. Activities ranged from providing

new winter coats to children, to helping amputee

victims in earthquake-devastated Haiti, to stocking

food pantries, to helping victims of disasters such as

Hurricane Sandy, the recent explosion in West,

Texas, and the tornados in Oklahoma. We help

change countless lives and communities around the

world through our charitable service.

The Knights of Columbus will launch their fifteenth

international prayer program this August. The new

program, centering on the Immaculate Conception,

was announced by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson at

the Organizational Meeting of State Deputies in New

Haven, Conn. This year’s program marks the second

time the Order will hold a program consecrated to the

Immaculate Conception. The icons will travel

throughout the world, under the organization of local

Knights’ councils who will present prayer programs

with the icon for their parishes and communities.

We Are On The Cusp of 100,000 Brother Knights

Terry Fruge, State Membership Director Terry Fruge

Greetings My Brother Knights,

I pen this article as the Great State of Texas stands as the largest

Jurisdiction in the Americas and on the cusp of 100,000 Brother Knights in

this great state. By the time this article is published, we will have welcomed

our Brothers from around the world to the 131st Supreme Convention in San

Antonio. We are also on the verge of booking our strongest recruiting month

for July since 1996 (and perhaps ever – I can only see results back to 1996).

As I contemplated what to say in this article, I was drawn to the word “Stand”.

We Knights like to “Stand”. We stand for our Faith and our beliefs as Catholic

Gentlemen. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Priests, Bishops,

Seminarians and Religious. We stand with our brothers and sisters in

performing the countless acts of charity through each fraternal year. And

lastly, we stand shoulder to shoulder with each other, for Life, for our faith,

and for each other. Our Bishops and pastors also call us to stand for all of the

things we believe in, and as visible witnesses to our faith and way of life. So,

reflecting on the word “stand”, what comes to mind? For me at least, I offer

the following:

STAND

S - Seek knowledge of and about the Knights. Seek a deeper relationship

with God and a deeper understanding of our Faith.

T - With understanding, tell others about the Knights, especially practical

Catholic Gentlemen.

A - Ask Practical Catholic Gentlemen to join us!

N - Nurture their involvement as new Knights, and mentor them. Reach out to

Council members you haven’t seen for a while. They may need your help and

companionship.

D - Discover new ways to serve,. Look beyond your Council. There is

strength in numbers. Be visible.

One only needs to look to the events in Austin surrounding the Pro-Life

legislation considered, ultimately passed, and signed into law by our

Governor, to see the importance in standing up for what we believe in. So my

call for each of us is to be ambassadors for the Knights, for our priests and

Bishops, for what we believe in! Educate yourself, get involved and ask your

Practical Catholic gentlemen friends to join us. Our cause is noble and the

time to act is now.

Venerable

Father Michael J. McGivney

Born: August 12, 1852

Died: August 14, 1890

Through the Knights, Father McGivney sought to form young

Catholic men into good spouses and fathers. He has become known

as Apostle to the Young and Defender of Christian Family Life. He

saw strong families as the foundation of his parish, of the Church

and of society at large. He was convinced that the Catholic layman

had a unique role in influencing society and promoting the values

found in what Pope John Paul II has since named the Culture of Life

and Civilization of Love. Father McGivney did not use the

vocabulary of the 21st century, but he espoused the same Gospel

values that Catholics affirm today.

Increasingly, Church leaders realize that part of Father

McGivney’s spiritual genius is that nearly a century before the

Second Vatican Council addressed the important role of the laity in

the Church. Father McGivney built a way for laymen to make a

substantial and enduring contribution to their parishes, communities

and physical and spiritual security of their families. And he saw that

by doing so one parish and community at a time, Catholic families

could help build a better world.

He was a man ahead of his time.

On July 16, Supreme Secretary

councils were rewarded for recruiting

new members into the Order and

conducting service outreach programs

along with membership directors and

their wives (for the membership

portion of the incentive) and program

For the membership portion of the

incentive, the winners selected were

Texas, and All Saints Council 4872 in

Taylor, Michigan. St. Jerome Council,

which recruited eight new members,

will be represented by Carl London

and Nicholas Davoust along with their

wives. The Knights of Columbus was born on February 6, 1882, when

the first members choose Columbus as their patron. Immediately

after the Order’s March 29 incorporation, Father McGivney sent the

Without Charity Nothing Else Matters

Mark Evans, State Charities Director

My Brother Knights, Mark Evans

We have completed another successful year in Texas. Our state charities

program is strong and the final numbers show that we achieved just over 99%

of our goal.

As we begin our new fraternal year let us keep in mind the first principle of

our Order, Charity. Without charity everything else suffers. Membership is

harder because we need to show our charitable accomplishments in order to

entice catholic gentlemen to become a part of our family. Without charity

driving our programs, then they also suffer.

Our Bishops count on these dollars to continue their respective programs

that they have earmarked to benefit from these very important funds. With that

in mind, please make a commitment to go to your council and encourage your

brother knights to make State Charities a priority item. Make it a budget item.

And, then begin to plan to raise the money to meet your goal. Remember, it is

only $10.00 per member per year.

Why wait until next June, at the last minute, to say…. “We need to send in

our charity goal.” Why not take care of it now? This way you get it done and

can move on to other programs that your council has on its agenda. Doing so

now gives you a whole twelve months until you need to do it again. Don’t wait

until the last minute. Your Bishop is counting on you.

The attached contribution form is a great way to solicit individual

contributions over and above your goal. Encourage and challenge each

member at your next meeting to contribute. For a minimum of $20.00, each

contributing member will receive our latest Charity Pin. This pin is beautiful and

you should wear it with pride. It makes a statement that you support your

brother knights, your catholic community, your fellow man, and of course your

Bishop. So, please ask everyone to make this small sacrifice today.

Texas State Charities Donations of $20.00 or higher will be recog-

nized with a State Charities Pin. Make check

payable to Texas State Council Charities.

vouchers, receipts (treasurer to financial

statements, cash and checks on hand, if any,

bills or invoices requiring payment, a copy of the

prior audit, member ledgers (the outstanding

balance report).

• From the Treasurer: Treasurer’s cash book, all

council account check books, bank statements,

cancelled checks and vouchers for the audit

period, all documents reflecting cash or liquid

assets such as stocks, bonds, notes, etc.

• From the Recorder: the Council’s minute book

The most overlooked and forgotten record of all of

these is the Recorder’s minute book. Council

minutes should memorialize all expenditures

approved by the Council. [Note: for this reason,

never approve a Treasurer’s report at a regular

business meeting if it fails to describe or itemize all

expenditures made or approved by the Council.] It is

imperative that all Council expenditures over $500 be

approved by the Council, and for those expenditures

under $500, that a report or explanation have been

provided to the Council during the fraternal year.

The Grand Knight and the Trustees should

personally gather these records, and then actually

conduct the audit. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES

SHOULD EITHER THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY

OR THE TREASURER CONDUCT THE AUDIT;

however, the Financial Secretary and the Treasurer

should be present during the audit to answer

questions. Additionally, the Recorder should also be

present to answer questions regarding expenditures

approved by the Council. Ultimately, the Grand

Knight and at least two of the trustees must approve

the audit. Before signing off, the auditing officers

should be able to certify that they reviewed all the

records, and that the information they provide on the

audit form is true and correct.

The Advocate’s Docket Call

Worthy Texas Knights! Thank you for the privilege

of allowing me to serve as your State Advocate this

coming fraternal year. I spent most of my first year

mastering the laws and rules that govern our Order. I

also focused on various issues that needed

immediate attention. I am now in a better position to

spend time advising you on matters and concerns

that effect the operations of your Councils,

Assemblies, Chapters, and Districts. Going forward, I

will try to submit regular articles that will focus on a

seasonal issue (a report or filing that is due at a

particular time), and then, taking a cue from prior

State Advocates, I will share recent questions that I

receive from Brother Knights across the State.

Semi-Annual Audit is Due

By now, all Council Trustees should be preparing

for their semi-annual audit. As you know, all Councils

are required to conduct their end of year audit [for

period of January 1 through June 30] by submitting

Form 1295 no later than August 15, 2013. Section

145 of the Laws of the Order requires that the Council

Trustees, along with the Grand Knight, audit the

financial secretary’s and treasurer’s accounts every

six months. There are two reasons Supreme

requires these audits: First, regular audits help to

insure that a Council is financially healthy, and that its

financial transactions have been reviewed,

authorized, and confirmed. Second, the Supreme

Council provides a bonding program for all Council

Treasurers and Financial Secretaries. To satisfy the

requirements of the bonding program, the semiannual

audit must be completed.

The best guide to prepare for the audit is found in

the Financial Secretary’s Handbook under “Audit.”

The following records are required to prepare for the

audit:

• From the Financial Secretary: all cash receipts,

Recent Questions

Question to the Advocate:

Can a Mason be a member of the Knights of

Columbus? Our Admission Committee is considering

extending membership to a member of our parish

who has been a Mason for several years. He told us

that the Catholic Church has recently changed its

position on Free Masonry, and that Masons are now

free to join the Knights of Columbus. Is that

accurate?

Advocate’s Answer:

No. The Catholic Church has not changed its

position regarding Masons. The Catholic Church

continues to hold that the tenets of the Masonic

rituals are incompatible with the teachings of the

Catholic Church. In 1983, the Vatican reiterated:

“The Church’s negative judgment in regards to

Masonic associations remains unchanged since their

principles have always been considered

irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church and

therefore membership in them remains forbidden.

The faithful who enroll in Masonic associations are in

a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy

Communion.” Therefore, a man cannot be a Mason

and a Knight of Columbus simultaneously. If a

Catholic man who is a Mason wishes to join the

Knights of Columbus, he must forever renounce his

membership in the Masons in writing, and send it to

the last lodge he attended. The Council Financial

Secretary and/or Admissions Committee should

always keep a copy of this letter in its records.

Question to the Advocate:

Can you clarify the Grand Knight’s $500

discretionary fund? My council recently elected me

as Grand Knight. Several Past Grand Knights have

told me that as Grand Knight I have the authority

spend up to $500 without Council approval. Is that

true?

Advocate’s Answer:

have always had the authority to pay any invoices or

assessments without a Council vote. These are

routine assessments for which the Council has

collected member dues and must be paid to honor

the members’ status and expectations.

In those instances where a Grand Knight believes

he needs to act on an expense prior to a regularly

scheduled business meeting, he and the Trustees

may approve expenditures for $500 or less without a

Council vote. But, before these $500 or less

expenditures can be proper made, the Grand Knight

must have the approval of at least two of the

Council’s trustees. Those expenditures must then be

reported by either the Grand Knight or the Trustees at

the next regular business meeting of the Council.

The Council’s minutes should reflect the expenditure,

and that the expenditure was authorized by the

Grand Knight, and the Trustees approving the vote

should be identified. Some Councils have a practice

of having the Council ratify or approve these

expenditures. Arguably, this tacit approval is not

required, but is a good practice for maintaining the

Council’s financial credibility.

For expenses not exceeding $500 brought up at a

Council meeting, a majority of the members present

must approve the expenditure after the proposed

expenditure has been brought before the Council with

a proper motion and second. A quorum of members

must be present to constitute a valid business

meeting. Your particular Council’s bylaws may set

out the minimum number of members that constitutes

a quorum.

For any expenditure exceeding $500, there is a

different procedure that requires two business

meetings. First the proposed expenditure should be

raised by motion or resolution, read, and seconded at

a business meeting. When discussion is completed,

the matter is “tabled” until the next business meeting.

After the first meeting, the matter or resolution in

question must be “posted.” Posted means broadcast

to the membership in whatever manner the Council

informs members of its important matters (e.g.,

newsletter, website). For example, if a Council sends

out a monthly newsletter, the matter can be posted

verbatim or a summary included in the newsletter that

adequately describes the matter under consideration.

State Advocate continued

The notice should also include the date of the

meeting at which the matter will be voted upon. At

the second business meeting, the matter is “removed

from the table” during the Council’s “Old Business” or

“Unfinished Business” portion of the meeting. At this

time, the matter can be discussed further for those

members who were not present at the prior meeting,

and the motion can be amended. When the question

is finally called on the matter, two-thirds of those

present at the meeting must approve the motion for

the expenditure to be approved.

So as to avoid the constant overlapping and

consideration of various expenditures, it is best for

Councils to make an annual budget that will

anticipate all expenses for a fraternal year, regardless

of the amount. Next month, I will discuss Council

budgets.

Question to the Advocate:

Can you provide some guidelines for fundraisers?

My council has received conflicting advice on how to

conduct a charitable fundraiser. Is there a resource

we can examine that will guide us on how to conduct

a fundraiser the right way?

Advocate’s Answer:

I’m glad you asked! All Council officers should be

registered on the Supreme Council’s website:

www.kofc.org. Once registered, and immediately

after you log on, you will be taken directly to your

Council’s specific “Reports On-Line” page. One of

the top three tabs you will see is entitled “Officers’

Desk Reference.” Click the Officers’ Desk

Reference. Once there, you will see a link entitled,

“Financial Issues,” and the fourth link on this page is

entitled “Guidelines for Charitable Fundraisers.”

Supreme’s guidelines for charitable fundraisers are

then summarized for your review.

Generally, when advertising your fundraiser, make

sure that you properly identify your Council by name

and Council number. Do not say that the Knights of

Columbus is holding a fundraiser. Instead, say

Knights of Columbus St. Ann Council 10245 is

holding a fundraiser.

Fundraising activities should be used only to raise

money for a worthy charitable organization,

consistent with the mission of the Order and our first

principle of Charity. The beneficiary organization or

organizations should be identified in the advertising.

Proceeds from the fundraiser cannot be used to

pay for ordinary council expenses or liabilities. The

proceeds must be disbursed as follows: (a) payment

of the expenses associated with the event; and (b)

the gift to the charitable organization. Councils

should obtain event insurance to cover all potential

liabilities associated with the event.

House in a Box Now Available from SVDP

for “West” Disaster Relief

The Society of St. Vincent De Paul is currently

working with the Knights of Columbus and Catholic

Charities of Central Texas in a unified Catholic

response to the West, Texas disaster that occurred

on April 17, 2013. One of their projects is the “House

in a Box” which began on May, 30, 2013 and which

consists of brand-new Tempur-Pedic mattresses from

Factory Mattress of Austin, a new sofa, a new dining

room table with chairs, new bathroom linens, new

bathroom linens, and a kitchen preparedness kit

consisting of dishes, pots, and pans.

Any family wishing to benefit from the “House in a

Box” project should see one of the SVDP

representatives located at the parish hall at St. Mary

of the Assumption Catholic Church in West. A FEMA

number will be needed to receive a voucher from the

Society’s Disaster Response Team. Upon receipt of

a voucher, directions will be provided on where to go

to pick up the items. Pick-up hours are from 10:00

AM to 4:00 PM on Wednesday, Thursday, and

Saturday (closed Friday).

Fourteen people died and over 300 homes in

West, including apartments, businesses, and schools

were destroyed or seriously damaged when the

Texas Fertilizer Plant exploded on the late afternoon

of April 17, 2013.

Donations can be made at www.tkofc.org.

Supreme Council Sends Additional $170K to West The Supreme Council recently announced that it

will distribute an additional $170,000 for relief efforts

to assist families in the community of West, Texas —

the town of 2,800 inhabitants was devastated by the

April 17 fertilizer plant explosion that killed 15 people,

injured 160 and damaged or destroyed 150 local

buildings.

The funds, raised from K of C members and the

public from throughout the U.S. and abroad, are

being distributed as follows:

• $50,000 to St. Mary’s Catholic School in West for

tuition assistance and for subsidies to affected or

displaced students;

• $50,000 to the West Independent School District for

damage repair and the purchase of a truck for

transport between its temporary campuses;

• $70,000 to purchase mattresses for 100 affected

families as part of the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s

“House in a Box” program, which provides essentials

such as beds, linens and cooking/eating utensils to

those affected by the blast.

The $170,000 disbursement follows an initial K of

C donation of $10,000 that was made in the

immediate wake of the blast for emergency relief. In

addition, local Knights from K of C Council 2305 in

West – and from surrounding councils – assisted in

recovery efforts with local authorities and agencies.

Knights are also volunteering in support of the House

in a Box initiative.

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with

those who lost so much in this tragedy,” said

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson.

SEPTEMBER 2013 REMINDERS

q September 1, 2013 - Report of Round Table Coordinator Establishing a Round Table program accomplishes one of the Order’s goals of

having a Knights of Columbus presence in every parish. And in time, the Round

Table can even develop into its own council. The Knights of Columbus Round

Table Pamphlet (#2632) and the Parish Round Table Initiative Pamphlet (#4519)

contains details and guidelines for establishing Round Tables and can be obtained

on line at the Order’s Supreme Council website at www.kofc.org.

Establishing a Round Table will count for one of the requirements of the Church

Activities section of the Columbian Award. If a council sponsors more than one

Round Table, each Round Table can be included in the Church Activities section in

qualifying for the Columbian Award.

Reporting the appointment of a Round Table Coordinator must be submitted to

the Supreme Council and State Council offices on Form #2629 by September 1st.

q September 11, 2013 - Supreme Council World Day of Prayer At its 122nd annual Meeting in 2004, the Supreme Council resolved that

September 11th would be observed each year as a World Day of Prayer for

Peace.”

September 11, 2013 marks the 12th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks in

New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. Twelve years have passed since that

day, but the memory is as clear as yesterday. The Knights of Columbus are

resolved to remember that day, as a constant memorial to all those whose lives

were lost, but also as a day to remember all those whose lives continue to be

affected by terrorism and violence throughout the world. This day is an opportunity

to join together in unity and prayer to show the world our desire for peace.

Right now, the Supreme Council is making available for councils to order through

the Supply Department, the “World Day of Prayer for Peace” prayer card (item

#9484) and poster (item #9483). In addition, there are several other Knights of

Columbus publications relevant to this issue. Each council will receive through the

mail, the order form as well as a sample of the prayer card and poster and a copy

each of the “Heroes Fund” video and “A Day of Remembrance” video. All items

are available for order for this program. (see next page)

It is hoped by the Supreme Council that all councils will join in honoring the

memory of those lost on September 11, 2001 through joining in the Knights of

Columbus World Day of Prayer for Peace. More information about this program is

also available through the Supreme Council website at www.kofc.org

OCTOBER 2013 REMINDERS

q October 1-31, 2013 - October BLITZ The “BLITZ!” remains a popular recruitment program. It is a coordinated effort

meant to maximize the effectiveness of your council’s membership team’s efforts

by canvassing an entire local parish on one weekend during October and then

conducting a First Degree. The five phases to conducting a recruitment Blitz

program are:

Phase 1: The Preparation Phase: This phase begins with obtaining

the pastor’s permission to conduct a BLITZ at the church during a specific

weekend and get the event advertised in bulletin. The next step is to order

recruitment materials from the Supreme Council Supply Department. Then begin

lining up members to assist with the “Blitz”, including the insurance

representatives.

Phase 2: The Execution Phase: Arrange for a membership recruitment

announcement to be made during Mass. Set up information tables at the door of

the church and have plenty of prospect cards. Have plenty of council members

on hand.

Phase 3: The Follow-Up Phase: Follow up with the prospects and let them

know about the planned informational seminar. Make sure to provide them with

the date, and time, and place, and make sure to invite the entire family. Offer

transportation if necessary

Phase 4: The Orientation Phase: Have plenty of recruitment and

informational brochures available for the prospects and their families at the

informational seminar. Consider showing a recruitment video. Offer and get a

Form #100 signed by the prospect. Have the council Chaplain present. Inform

the prospect of the next First Degree. Offer some refreshments.

Phase 5: The First Degree: Schedule a First Degree no more than two

weeks after the informational seminar. Be sure to provide the prospects with a

reminder. Learn the prospect’s area of interest and begin getting him involved as

soon as possible.

q October 6, 2013 - “Life Chain Sunday” and “Respect Life Sunday” Life Chain Sunday was started in 1987 by a small ministry in Yuba City,

California. Since then, the Life Chain movement has spread throughout the

United States and Canada, with tens of thousands of participants each year.

Their mission statement calls upon people to pray for the safety of women in crisis

pregnancies and their unborn children. They urge the general public to embrace

the sanctity of human life and oppose the exploitation of women through abortion,

q October 10, 2013 - Supreme Per Capita is Due Councils are required to pay their semi-annually assessed “Per Capita” which

was billed on July 1st to the Supreme Council office by October 10th. Failure to

pay the per capita by this deadline will result in an automatic suspension by the

Supreme Council which also includes the suspension of the benefits provided to

each individual member received from the Supreme Council. Paying the per

capita will automatically remove the local council from suspension and reinstate

all benefits to the members. This criteria must be met on time for a council to

remain qualified for the Star Council Award. Checks should be mailed to Knights

of Columbus, ATTN: Council Accounts, P. O. Box 1480, New Haven, CT 06506.

q October 10, 2013 - Supreme Council Catholic Advertising Fee Councils are required to pay their semi-annually assessed “Catholic Advertising

Fee” to the Supreme Council office by October 1st in order to remain qualified for

original designated Columbus Day. Plan a special recruitment drive and First

Degree, a Clergy Appreciation Dinner, or a public relations event that brings the

community’s attention to the many significant and important contributions made by

the Knights of Columbus.

q October 14, 2013 - Football Frenzy Sweepstakes Each council was issued a packet of football sweepstakes coupons during the

state convention. Each council was asked to sell the coupons ($10 each) in an

effort to offset any future possible increase in state per capita. The proceeds are

used to support the general operations of the state council. To be eligible, all

entries must be completed by midnight of October 14, 2013 which is two weeks

prior to the first game on the schedule. The cash prizes total $1,000 each week

for ten weeks beginning October 27, 2013.

Every council who participates will earn a direct $1 credit for every coupon sold

against their July 1, 2014 state per capital billings. Additional coupons are still

available for first time sales or if councils need additional coupons. District

Deputies are asked to remind councils to start sending in the their sold

Return to the NFL: Yes, we have gone back to

using the NFL teams for our Football Sweepstakes

Program. I asked the question, and most of the

District Deputies and Grand Knights I talked to

wanted the Pros back. The NFL has started its

season with the draft and putting the teams together.

We need to do the same. We KICKED OFF this

season by beginning the distribution of the tickets at

the State Convention last month. Those Grand

Knights and delegates that took their tickets should

start now to put THEIR team together to handle the

sale within their councils.

Last Year’s Awards: At the state convention, we

recognized the councils that sold the most tickets,

earned the most profit, and the top Diocesan and

District Deputies. However, we should not forget the

councils that participated for the first time as well as

those that may not have sold the most, but made

efforts to increase their sales from the prior year. To

these councils, we thank you whole heartedly! The

GOAL, of course, is to get all councils active in this

extremely important fund raiser!

The Good News: Going back to the NFL teams

means we have a longer selling season. Tickets are

due back to us no later than October 14th. You might

want to mark your calendars to start gathering up the

stubs and left over tickets around October 1st.

The Bottom Line: The 2013-2014 budget passed

by the delegates at the convention placed our GOAL

LINE at the 16,000 ticket yard line. Please help us get

the ball over the line this year. Participation in the

2013 Football Sweepstakes makes us all winners!

The State Council benefits from funds raised by your

sold tickets. Your council benefits by a per capita

savings of $1 per ticket sold. AND, we won’t have to

raise the per capita rate on our membership, thus,

causing dues to go up!

RULES OF THE GAME You buy tickets. You sell tickets to everyone you

meet at any opportunity!

You send the sold ticket stubs, unsold tickets, and

money in to Dennis Stark, “Football Central,” 5513

Oak Top Drive, Colleyville, TX 76034.

You go to Greenbeesavingsclub.com, register your

ticket and begin saving money! Purchase greatly

discounted restaurant coupons and enjoy dining

while saving money. Yes, it works. (Look for tips in an

upcoming article.)

The game cards start October 27 and includes the

last 10 games of the regular season. All you have to

do then is watch and have fun tallying your team’s

scores. You may be a winner again!
