ANGRAU, Guntur e-Newsletter E-mail : [email protected] Vol. I (2), 2017 Agriculture sector in India plays a pivotal role in food, livelihood security and for overall economic development. The goal set by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in the year 2015 to double farmers income by 2022 is central to promote farmer’s welfare, reduce agrarian distress and bring parity between income of farmers and those working in non-agricultural professions. The Govt. of A.P. is also giving lot of importance for doubling the farmers income and in that direction A.P. Agritech Summit 2017 has been organized during 15-17, November 2017 in Visakhapatnam. ANGRAU strongly believes that technology is the drive to achieve the goal of doubling farmers income by 2022. In this context, ANGRAU has revisited its ‘Research Mandate’ duly emphasizing climate smart strategies including varieties and farming systems. ANGRAU is also in the forefront of nano technology research with a nano technology laboratory at Institute of Frontier Technology, RARS, Tirupati established in the year 2010 and marked several first reports to its credit which includes field evaluation of the nano materials in agricultural crops, phloem transport of nano scale calcium oxide in ground nut, etc. In Nov, 2017 Society of Agri nano technology conducted a national seminar on “Emerging trends in Agrinanotechnology - 2017” to gather and develop work force in agri nano technologies for future farming. Use of ICTs in farm information delivery (Annapurna Krishi Prasara Seva, mobile apps (Eruvaka, Plantix, Mana Verusanaga, Greeshma, Krishi Vigyan, etc), Phone-in-Live, ANGRAU Research Management system (ARMS) and Geospatial Technology Centre (GTC) are the steps towards digitalization ofAgriculture. ANGRAU is utilizing Satellite based Rice Monitoring System (SRMS) Project, which uses SarMap technology from Switzerland and crop models from IRRI for area and yield mapping in 13 districts of A.P. for timely crop insurance to farmers. On the academic front, the student READY programme was implemented from academic year 2016- 17 that prepare the students to start their own enterprise and turn as “job creators instead of job seekers”. ANGRAU will take all other measures to double farmers income involving active and coordinated participation of various line Departments. The ICAR Monitoring and Review Committee visited theCollege of Food Science and Technology, Bapatla on 13th

ANGRAU short duration sugarcane clone 2006 A 223(Co A 12323) developed by RARS, Anakapalle hasreceived national recognition for its high yield at the Annualgroup meeting of AICRP on Sugarcane held at TNAU,Coimbatore from September 22nd- 23rd, 2017. Speakingon the recognition to ANGRAU clone, Dr. M.Bharathalakshmi, Principal Scientist (Sugarcane), RARS,Anakapalle said that the clone is a cross between CoA92081 (87 A 298) and 87 A 380 varieties. Multi locationaltrials were conducted from 2015 -17 at various locations(Anakapalle and Vuyyuru in Andhra Pradesh, Nellikuppamand Cuddalore in Tamilnadu and Nayagarh in Odisha) intwo plant crops and one ratoon crop. The results revealedthat the clone gave 12.0% higher cane yield than CoA92081 (87A 298) (Viswamitra) and Co C 01061. The

National Recognition to ANGRAU’s Sugarcane Clone

clone yields 130 tonnes per ha and jaggery yield is 13 -14 tonnes per ha and sucrose percentage is 20. The cloneis tolerant to red rot disease. It can also tolerate moisturestress and water logging. It gives good quality jaggery.

The Govt. of A.P. in association with Indian Chamber of Commerce organizedIndia Rice Conclave 2017 during Nov 22nd – 23rd, 2017 at Vijayawada.Strengthening of rice production and food security in the A.P. state were discussed.Sri N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of A.P. inaugurated the India RiceConclave 2017 and shared the efforts being put in to retain A.P.’s position as oneof the leading States in rice cultivation. Biennial Tobacco Workshop Organized

XXIII Biennial Workshop of All India NetworkProject on Tobacco was jointly organized by ICAR -Central Tobacco Research Institute, Rajahmundry andAcharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, Guntur, atRARS, Nandyal during 23rd -24th November 2017.Inaugural session of XXIII Biennial Workshop of All India

Network project on Tobacco was chaired by Chief GuestDr. N.V. Naidu, Director of Research, ANGRAU. Theresearch progress, results and varieties released during2015-16 and 2016-17 were reviewed. Present tobaccoscenario and key issues for enhancing the exports andfarmers income in tobacco crop were discussed.Technical programme of 2017-18 tobacco research wasfinalized in the workshop. A publication on ‘Twenty fiveyears of research achievements in Bidi and Natu tobacco(1992-2017)’ was released. Dr. D. Damodar Reddy,Director, ICAR-CTRI; Dr. C. Chandra Sekhara Rao,Nodal Officer, All India Network Project on Tobacco;Dr. M. The Govt. of A.P. in association with Confederation ofIndian Industry, Bill& Melinda Gates Foundation andDalberg has organized the AP Agritech Summit 2017at Visakhapatnam during 15th -17th November, 2017.The summit was the platform that brought togetherglobal leaders, start-up founders, leading policymakers, and technology experts and discussedinnovative ideas, reducing barriers to technologicalinnovations and supporting smallholder farmers of theA.P. state. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister ofA.P.; Sri Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy, Ministerfor Agriculture, Horticulture, Sericulture & AgroProcessing, Andhra Pradesh; Sri B. Ranga AgriculturalUniversity and Society of Agri Nanotechnology, Tirupati during2nd -3rd , November 2017 at Tirupati. The programme with a title –‘ANGRAU in the service of farmers’ was telecastedduring 6.00 P.M to 7.00 P.M on 18.12.2017. Hon’bleV-C answered several questions received from the farmersof both A.P. and Telangana States, pertaining to cropproduction, crop protection, integrated farming system,research and extension services, etc.

A conference titled “ Digital and EngineeringTechnologies for Precision Agriculture and ValueAddition & Farm Engineering Expo- 2018” isscheduled to be jointly organized by Acharya N.G.Ranga Agricultural University, A.P. State Agro IndustriesDevelopment Corporation Ltd. and Indian Society ofEngineering - Andhra Pradesh Chapter on 26th and27th , February 2018 at College of AgriculturalEngineering, Bapatla. In this context, a brochure wasreleased by V-C, ANGRAU on 03.1.2018 at Gunturand Dr.V. Damodara Naidu expressed that digital andengineering technologies are needed in agriculture toincrease yields with reduction in cost of cultivation. Dr.D. A one day training programme on Work Excellence wasconducted on 14.11.2017 to the non-teaching staff ofGuntur Campus. Dr.V. Damodara Naidu, V-C,ANGRAU emphasized the importance of a good workingenvironment to achieve the targets, subsequent tobifurcation of the A.P. state and shifting of University toGuntur. Renowned Psychologist, Dr.B.V. Pattabhiram,the resource person motivated the non teaching staff onhow to perform better in a working environment withminimum stress and gave strategies such as 7Ds (Duty,Devotion, Dedication, Discipline, Decision Making,Determination, Discriminate) and Six Ts( Time, Talk,

Review meeting of the project entitled “Satellitebased rice monitoring and crop insurance system forAndhra Pradesh” funded by Government of A.P. wasjointly organized by ANGRAU, Guntur and IRRI,Philippines on 05-12-2017 at Lam, Guntur under thechairmanship of Dr. N.V. Naidu, Director of Research,ANGRAU. Sri. B. Rajsekhar, IAS, Special ChiefSecretary (Agriculture), Govt. of A.P was the Chief Guest,while, Dr.V. Damodara Naidu, Vice-Chancellor,ANGRAU and Dr. Nafees Meah, IRRI Representativefor South Asia participated in the meeting as specialguests.

Dr. P. Prabhu Prasadini, Principal Scientist,ANGRAU, while introducingthe project mentioned thattemporal satellite data of highresolution would help inmonitoring the progress ofcrop and estimating theacreage and yield of rice,which is a major crop grownin Andhra Pradesh. The rice

growing areas of West Godavari, East Godavari, Krishnaand Guntur districts, identified through remote sensingdata, verified by ground observations and area estimatesat district level were presented by Dr. Nasreen IslamKhan, Project Leader, & Senior Scientist and Head ofGIS Laboratory, IRRI.

Dr. C.S. Murthy, NRSC, Hyderabad and Dr.K.V. Ramana, Vice Chairman, APSAC, Vijayawada havepresented the timeline, deliverables and outputs.Discussions were also held on feasibility of digital soilmapping in improving the accuracy of area and yieldpredictions. BMGF and CIMMYT team have presentedtheir strengths in digital soil mapping and emphasized its

need for states like AndhraPradesh. Sri Hari Jawahar Lal,Special Commissioner, Dept.of Agriculture, Govt. of A.P.,Dr. Tri Setiyono, IRRI, Dr. S.Pazhanivellan, TNAU and Dr.P. Prasuna Rani, PS & Head,Geospatial Technology Centrealso participated in the meeting.

99th Academic Council meeting was held on20.12.2017 at Advanced Post Graduate CentreSeminar Hall, Lam, Guntur under the chairmanshipof Dr. V. Damodara Naidu, Vice-Chancellor,ANGRAU. Dr. T.V. Satyanarayana, Registrar; Dr.T.Ramesh Babu, Dean of Agriculture; Dr. P.Sambasiva Rao, Dean of Student Affairs; Dr. T.Neeraja, Dean of Home Science; Dr. R.Veeraraghavaiah, Dean of P.G. Studies and othercouncil members attended the meeting. In hisaddress, Vice- Chancellor said that every researchstation and Agricultural College farm will take upseed production in both kharif and rabi seasons.Faculty of Agricultural Colleges shall also visit fieldsand advise farmers about pest and diseasemanagement. Every year, 4000 polytechnic studentsare completing their diploma and most of thesestudents get placement in Govt. and private jobs.Unemployed polytechnic students will be giventraining on grabbing job opportunities. Polytechnicstudents will also be given training on tractormechanism, agricultural implements, drip irrigation,rain guns, fertigation and establishment of custom hiringcentres. The e-Newsletter covers significant achievements andinnovative interventions taken by ANGRAU. The e-Newsletter is being circulated through e-mail to allthe SAUs, ICAR institutes, ANGRAU units andindividual scientists to share the happenings of theUniversity. YouTube Channel developed byElectronic Wing that broadcasts videos for the benefitof farmers and important events of ANGRAU, wasalso launched on this occasion.
