Head Coach Report

Hooray, we have another National Qualifying Time, this time from Lewis Smart! Indeed, this has been an extremely busy month full of galas at all levels, with something for all except our very youngest swimmers.

I would like to say thank you to all our senior swimmers who are currently helping in our junior sessions, there are quite a few of them now: Charlie Bond, Frankie Harrison, Turner James, Tom Jefferis, D’Arcy Kosla-Rule, Ryan Lamprell, Alice Mantle and ex-club swimmer Charlie Baker. I hope I haven’t missed anyone! Many do this as part of their Duke of Edingburgh Award Scheme and/or as part of their Club Captain duties. It is great to see them all so keen to do this, a real asset to the Club!

Regional Youth Championships, K2 Crawley & Surrey Sports Park, 03-05/05/14 Congratulations to all our Youth Swimmers who competed at the ASA South East Regional Youth Championships 3rd-5th May: James Fairlie, Jess Frayne, Caleb Grace, Harry James, Sam Munro, Ella Porter and Nic Savill. Will Jagger was unfortunately unable to swim due to injury. The boys’ 14-18yr relay team swam magnificently know-ing they could not match the entry time without Will, I was really impressed with their team spirit. All went under a minute in their 4 x 100m freestyle relay. There were Club Records swum by Ella Porter (50m backstroke), James Fairlie (50m breaststroke) and Nic Savill (50m butterfly). Special congratulations to S14 swimmer Caleb who won a Gold medal in his 100m butterfly and a Bronze medal in his 50m freestyle events on his first visit to the Youth Championships.

At the end of May it will be the turn of our Regional Age Group swimmers 11yr olds Archie Strowger, William Le Merle, Ollie Hodges; 12 yr old Anna Mantle; 13yr olds Charlie Hodges and Lewis Smart. We also have some relay teams entered this year for the first time, the team members being Lauren Boothby, Jessie Brown, Jack Collins, D’Arcy Kosla-Rule, Alice Mantle, Will Redwood and Tyler Whitcombe, most of whom were just outside their Regional Qualifying Times (RQTs). Congratulations and good luck to you all!

National Dwarf Games, Birmingham, 03-05/05/14 S6 swimmer Georgie Howells, who currently swims in Jackson Squad, had another suc-cessful year at the National Dwarf Games run by the Dwarf Sports Association UK in Birmingham. Although just 11yrs old, Georgie has to swim in the U14 age group. De-spite this Georgie swam to an amazing Gold in her 100m freestyle and Silver in her 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 100m individual medley. Amazing! Georgie is pic-tured left wearing her medals, with Paralympian Ellie Simmonds. Georgie’s swimming is progressing really well. She is very close to achieving the first level of the England Talent Programme, the Spotlight Programme and has her 100m breaststroke National Qualifying Time. We have already had a meeting with the Regional Disability Swimming Officer about this so watch this space! Great work Georgie!

Atlantis L3 Open Meet, 03-04/05/14 A further 15 swimmers were attended the Atlantis Open Meet the same busy week-end! Lewis Smart achieved two more RQTs in his 200m freestyle and 200m IM. Will Le Merle swam RQTs in his 200m and 400m freestyle events. Archie Strowger gained his 400m IM RQT, meaning he now has all 7 RQTs for 10yr old boys! There were improved

regional entry times from Ollie and Charlie Hodges too. Lewis, Archie, Ollie and Charlie all won Gold Medals. D’Arcy Kosla-Rule won a whopping 4 Gold Medals! Our swimmers produced PBs in almost every race! Well done to everyone who competed.

Puffin Trophy B Team Gala, Pavilions in the Park, Horsham, 10/05/14 Well done to all the children swam in this tough but friendly gala hosted by East Grinstead Swimming Club. There was some great swimming, good behaviour and excellent team spirit. The gala was aimed at non-county level swimmers, but we spotted quite a few county level swimmers there! We may not have won the gala, but we did win the cheer at the end!! This was excel-lent experience for the children and gave me a chance to see what areas we need to work on.

Congratulations to race winners Emily Pryke, Leah Nicholls and Joseph Alman. There were lots of PBs too!

Thank you to our helpers: Helen Smith who judged; Mark Brown our time keeper; Denise Brown and Sarah Thompson our Team Managers; Jessie Brown and Holly Alman, two of our senior swimmers who led pre-water mobility, managed the start lane end and looked after the young ones.

Puffin Gala Team:

Bracknell & Wokingham L1 LC Open Meet, 18/05/14 This is a great meet to attend and was a final opportunity for Age Group swimmers to gain their RQTs. It is held at the Aldershot Garrison Pool and compared to most pools it is relatively comfortable (not too hot!), there is plenty of space for the swimmers and the gala is well run. It’s been a good meet for us too. This was where Jess Frayne got her first national time last year and this year 13 year old Lewis Smart has done the same! Lewis (centre in picture) swam a brilliant 100m breaststroke, storming to 1st place in a time of 1:16.33, over a second inside the National Qualifying Time. Fantastic!

Frankie Harrison started the meet with a solid swim in her 400m freestyle, the first time she has swum this long course and is able to claim the 15 year girls Club Record. Further excellent swims came from William Le Merle, Jessie Brown, Abby Smith, Lauren Boothby and Charlie Hodges. There was Bronze for Jessie in her 100m butterfly (just missing Jess Frayne’s club record by 0.1 sec) and for Abby in her 200m breast-stroke (and claims the 11yr girls Club Record for her 200m freestyle). Lewis achieved Silver in his 200m breaststroke, whilst Charlie swam to Gold in the 100m backstroke (and another Club Record to claim). Will has claimed Club Records in all 3 of his events, the 200m IM, 200m backstroke and 100m backstroke. Well done everyone!

Northampton L1 LC Open Meet, 18/05/14 Ella Porter and Jess Frayne travelled to Northampton for their long course meet. This event was chosen because there were finals which are good experience. 14 year old Ella superbly swam her way to the final of the 100m backstroke in a new Club Record time of 1:11.16, finishing 5th. Jess finished 3rd in both of her events, the 50m freestyle and butterfly. Well done girls!

Bognor Vanessa Knight L3 Open Meet, Arun Leisure Centre, Felpham, 25/05/14 A massive 37 Littlehampton swimmers entered this local open meet. There were 60 PBs swum and with awards at A, B and C grades many won medals. Gold medallists were: Lewis Cox, Zac Evans, James Fairlie, Charlie Hodges (3), Abigail Homer, D’Arcy Kosla-Rule, Alice Mantle, Anna Mantle, Ella Porter (2), Emily Pryke, Zak Rigby, Lewis Smart (3), Archie Strowger, Callum Strow-ger, Lauren Wayman, Sophie Wayman; Silver: Charlie Bond, Lewis Cox, Tierney Cox, Zac Evans, James Fairlie (2), Ollie Iden, D’Arcy Kosla-Rule, Alice Mantle (2), Anna Mantle (5), Emily Pryke, Zak Rigby, Lewis Smart, Archie Strowger, Lauren Wayman; Bronze: Freya Cole, Lewis Cox, Zac Evans, James Fairlie, Ollie Iden, Felicity James, D’Arcy Kosla-Rule, Grace Mitchell, Leah Nicholls, Ella Porter, Will Redwood (2), Archie Strowger (2), Anna Thompson, Sophie Wayman (2). We came 2nd overall to Top Club winners Hailsham. Ella Porter swam an Event Best Time in the 50m backstroke, whilst Charlie Hodges swam two Event Best Times in the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke! 14 year olds Lewis Cox and Callum Strowger performed an exciting race finishing within 0.04s of each other and both going under 30 seconds for the first time in their 50m freestyle. Then James Fairlie managed to beat the top Hailsham swimmer in a very exciting 50m breaststroke race! Thank you to Steve Bond and Ga-reth Matthews for helping me poolside team managing. We also provided many officials and helpers – Sally, Donna, Mick, De-nise, Kirstee, Oli, Keith, Daren, Melissa and Kerry...... I hope I didn’t miss anyone!

Regional Age Group Championships 31/05/14-01/06/14 The first weekend of the Regional Age Group Championships has got off to a good start. Particularly stunning was 10yr old Archie Strowger in his 400m IM (which started with a superb 100 fly), finishing 7th and in winning his 200m breaststroke heat, both in new Club Records. Both Lewis Smart and Will Le Merle swam to new Club Records in their 400m IM too! Lewis made the 100m breaststroke final, finishing 8th and was 2nd reserve for the 200m breaststroke final. There were some great relay splits too and very respectable placings of 29th for the girls, 31st for the boys out of about 40 teams, bearing in mind they were young teams who will be able to swim the same relay age group (11-14) next year. I was so proud of you all and can’t wait for the final weekend!

Good luck to Will Le Merle and Ollie Hodges who are swimming in the ESSA Primary Schools Relays National Final in Sheffield on 21st June. This means they will miss our next Sussex League Gala which is on the same day, good luck Team! Also good luck to Will Jagger who has been selected to swim the 200m and 400m freestyle in the ESSA Schools National Final the following weekend. Finally, don’t forget to get your Sibyl Tarvis Gala entries in! Information about Summer Swimming sessions will go out shortly.

Happy swimming! Sue x

Squad Coach Chat

Adlington Academy Hi Team,

Welcome to Jess Hunter, Seb Cunningham and Erin Humphries who have joined us. We hope you enjoy your swimming and get better and better.

Good luck to Anya and Amelia who have moved to Jackson Squad, you’ll have to work really hard now!

This month we have been concentrating on our water skills. These are things like push and glides, streamlining and diving so that you can learn them really well and always be able to do them. This has meant that we coaches have got very wet when things go wrong!! Most of you are getting better and can enter the water head first now so well done! Great work!

Well done to Connor and Seb who were chosen to represent our club at the Puffin Gala, you both swam brilliantly, especially as you were against older children, we’re very proud.

I’d also like to mention Amelie Gilford this month; she entered the Vanessa Knight Gala which is open to all swimming clubs. Amelie was our only swimmer from Adlington and did us proud. It was a very high standard of competition and a tough one for a first gala. Fantastic Swimming Amelie.

Soon your parents will get an e-mail about our own Sibyl Tarvis Gala. It is only for our club and everyone can enter. It’s open to all age groups and the races are only 1 or 2 lengths which I know you can do. Please come and see me if you’re not sure which races to enter. In the meantime remember to touch the wall with 2 hands for Breaststroke and Butterfly, on your back for Backstroke and with 1 hand for Freestyle.

If any of you are Beavers, Cubs, Rainbows or Brownies then you can always ask me to check you for your badge work and we can get some signed off. Just bring in the paperwork and we’ll see what we can do.

Keep trying your best all of the time.

Helen xx

Jackson Squad

Greetings,

Another Sunday and another gala, I have just got in from the Bognor Swim Club- Vanessa Knight Open Meet, I await the results to see how the 7 girl swimmers from Jackson Squad got on in the morning session. In the afternoon session our squad help-ers: Alice, Darcy and Charlie all swam and won plenty of points towards the team trophy (Bognor SC were still adding up the results when I left). The month started with another 'open meet' with Oliver and Pia swimming at the Atlantis Gala in Hor-sham, it was obviously a fast pool, with both of you swimming excellent pb's in the 200 freestyle.

This month 10 of you (Bethany, Ellen, Regan, Heidi, Oliver, Ryan, Alfie, Connie, Josh and Amelia) got the opportunity of representing Littlehampton Swimming Club at the Puffin Gala. There were plenty of personal best times swum, with each of you getting the chance of swimming an individual event and a relay. Hopefully this gave you an idea of how swimming can be a team sport and inspires you to go on to represent LSC in Sussex and Arena Leagues in years to come!

In training we have been doing diving practice with some of you achieving your preliminary start award, I am guessing that Becky is one of the youngest LSC members to have achieved this. We have had another round of 200 freestyle time trials, with even more Jackson Squad swimmers breaking the 4 minute barrier. It is apparent that there remains more work to be done in transferring the skills you learn in training to the competitions you enter. I can't stress it enough that by always practicing cor-rect turns in training, you reduce the risk of disqualification in competition. Also when in training we do some stroke specific drills, the coaches are not looking for you to swim at your full race pace, we are really looking for you to swim with perfect technique. We have also been trying to make more use of the pace clock, this really helps the coaches spend more time help-ing you with your technique rather than simply telling you what to do and setting you off.

Just a couple of more bits, now that Summer is approaching, you will find that the pool will be getting warmer, it's even more important to bring plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Those of you doing the long course training on the 7th June - I'll be there to make sure you enjoy it! Don't forget the STAG Gala on the 28th June and finally it's a big Jackson Squad thank you to Denise for continuing to help coach Jackson Squad, although both your girls now swim in different squads and your Squad Coach is a Manchester City ( Premier League winners 2013/14) Supporter!

Squad Coach Chat continued

Foster Squad

Hi Team,

Welcome to Foster Squad Hannah who has joined us from Jackson, its hard work but worth it!

Well done to everyone who has swum in barbeques this month, there have been a lot! We have had the Atlantis meet, Puffin Gala, a Bracknell & Aldershot level 1 meet and the Vanessa Knight too.

The first one was the Atlantis gala way back at the start of May. I had a lovely e-mail from Zak R’s Grandad to say thanks for a great job and whatever we have been doing over the winter training with Zak it has obviously worked. He competed in 7 events and achieved 6 PB's. He gained times for his Gold Badge in 50m free and 50m Back, Silver in 50m Fly and 4 x 25 Ind. Medley. Fantastic swimming Zac, you were on fire that day!

The Puffin Gala is a team gala and the following children were chosen to represent our club; Alivia, Anna D, Joseph, Stephen, Owen, Matty, Akos, Zac E, Amber, Jess, Ollie I, Bel, Anna T, Alfie, Finlay, Hannah and Zak R. We had some fabulous swims, lots of PB’s and the following top 3 finishers in individual races – Joseph won his race, Akos, Amber, Matty and Abby were 2nd and 3rd places went to Zac E, Jess and Bel. It was a lovely gala with a great team spirit and good experience for those who are new to team galas.

At the Bracknell & Aldershot meet Will swam all 3 PB’s and got his Backstroke time to complete his regional bagcat entry, Abby got her first Club Record and a bronze medal too, Marvellous result!

The Vanessa Knight saw a good entry from Foster Squad; Archie, Ollie H, Jamie, Zak R, Ollie I, Abigail, Sophie, Anna T, Zac E, Bel, and Grace. Again there were some amazing swims and lots of top 3 places for our A, B and C level swimmers so a huge well done to all that entered and did well.

Entry e-mails will be out soon for our Sibyl Tarvis Age Group Gala (STAG). I’d like to see as many of you as possible swimming. It’s a sprint gala so not too much work!

Good luck to everyone swimming at galas next month, particularly Ollie and Will who are at the Nationals for the school relays, Ollie, Will and Archie, our 3 little stars at the Regionals (and Archie has qualified for every event he can, all 7!!) and also every-one involved in the Sussex League.

Great work team! My address is [email protected] if you have any questions.

Keep up the good work, Helen x

Thorpe Squad

Hi Guys,

The swimming season is starting to wind down now, having been full on all year, leaving the all important Regionals and Nationals still to go. However, we still have plenty of training to do before we can enjoy those long, hot summer holidays.....

There were still a few of you hoping to gain those last few qualifying times and Atlantis was the first opportunity. Swimmers were: Jessie, Charlie H, Leah, Lewis, Lauren and Tyler. Jessie swam incredibly well and close to pb, bearing in mind this was here first gala back after illness. Charlie and Lewis both secured first places and pbs, including a 12s pb for Lewis in the 200IM. Leah swam all pbs and Lauren swam a 5s pb in her 100m freestyle. There were several swims scratched at this gala which is a shame, especially if it was your only swim!

Then there was the Puffin Trophy gala and Emily and Leah were selected to swim for the team here. Congratulations to both of you for winning your individual races; Emily, the 50m fly and Leah, the 50m breaststroke, both with good pbs. You also helped your relay team to two good 2nd positions!

Next, you travelled up to Aldershot for the Bracknell and Wokingham Long Course meet. Swimmers there were: Charlie H, Lewis S and Jessie. Charlie won the 100m backstroke, well inside the RQT and Lewis swam a fantastic 100m breaststroke to secure his first ever National Qualifying Time!!

Finally, we have just had the Vanessa Knight at Bognor and lots of you swam; Charlie H: 1st 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke; Lewis S: 1st 50m freestyle, 100IM, 50m breaststroke; Lewis C; Callum; Will R: 1st 50m fly; Anna: 2nd in nearly everything :-); Charlie B; Emily; Lauren W; Felicity and Leah.

Huge congratulations go to:

Callum and Lewis C for swimming amazing 50m freestyle races. You are both now worthy members of the exclusive sub 30s club...well done!!!; and to

Charlie H for setting the new event best time for both the 12yrs 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

Last weekend was, finally, the first round of the REGIONALS!!! The super swimmers who made it there were Charlie H, Lewis S and Anna, who competed in their individual events. Also, well done to those who were selected to swim in the Regional Relay events: Tyler, Jessie, Anna, (and Lauren B), Lewis, Charlie H, Jack C and Will. Lewis' individual events were the 200m freestyle, 200m breaststroke and the 400IM but the best result was coming 8th in the 100m breaststroke. Charlie and Anna both swam the 100m backstroke. For the first time we had two relay teams as well and ALL of you should be proud of your achievements last weekend.

I would like to mention a couple of you for your achievements during training as well:

Lewis S: your backstroke and freestyle kick has shown significant improvement recently and I was really pleased with the effort you have put into getting it right.

Jack C: the changes you are making to your breaststroke technique are really paying off so keep up the good work.

Lauren W: always eager to lead the lane and do the whole set properly without a single moan, well done!

Thanks as always to Oli, Mark and Keith for being brilliant lane coaches!

If you need to get in touch with me for any reason at all, including to let me know what you have achieved, you can contact me on [email protected]

“You’ve got to be in it to win it!”

Hi All This month has been very successful!! Lewis Smart has managed to achieve his first national time in the 100m Breaststroke and Archie Strowger has now qualified for every race at regionals after qualifying for every race at counties. So I would just like to wish these two boys good luck for their upcoming competitions as well as everyone else who is competing at age group regionals and Welsh/British nationals. Jess and I travelled up to Northampton this month and competed there. The pool was amazing and even if we both didn't do the times we had hoped for we really enjoyed the meet and think it would be nice if more people came next year. Finally I would like to say a big well done to Jessie Brown. She competed very well at Aldershot and got so close to a regional time after being very ill and out of swimming for ages. I am very proud of you Jessie and their is always another chance. Love Ella
