From your President: Kathryn Mohr***Important*** The June 26 Hosta Tour sheet that was passed out at the May 21 meeting had a couple mistakes. The corrected document begins on the next page here in this newsletter.

I had a terrific time at our member sale; the weather cooperated, the food was wonderful, the company congenial and the hostas were great. Dawn did a wonderful job choosing and caring for the plants. I imagine that, like me, you’re all wondering: where can I find space for my new babies?

We have two important events coming up later this month. The cut leaf exhibit is June 11 at the Bethlehem Public Library, 451 Delaware Ave, Delmar NY 12054 Click here for: Directions Leaf prep is from 10 AM to noon. The exhibit will be open to the public from noon to 4 and clean-up will follow. I hope everyone will come with at least one leaf to exhibit. An exhibit is educational and a great opportunity for us to attract new members. Plus, it’s fun! Look at the AHS website, click on ”Hosta Judging” then “Show Judging” for all kinds of information on preparing for and staging a show. Consult the 2016 Simplified classification list primarily used to code entry tags to find out what section and class each of your leaves will be in; label them with their name and classification so you can fill out our unofficial entry tags correctly. Also, Retired Master Judge Meg Dalton’s instructions for preparing your leaves are included in this newsletter. See next page for more details!

*** We are looking for our glass vases used at past shows. If you have been storing them please contact me*** We can use the iris society’s show containers, but I’d like to locate and use ours. The Jennings have generously donated a box of vases for us to use.

Ann Van derVort has organized a wonderful hosta tour on Sunday, June 26 from noon to 4 PM. We will visit five gardens in the Delmar area. Invite your friends and come enjoy an afternoon with these talented gardeners. Look for details later in this newsletter!

Please let me know if you plan to donate potted hosta for the August sale. If we have the information early we can look up prices, print lists and be all ready to quickly set up the day of the sale.

Mabel Siler is retiring from her job as Hospitality Chair at the end of the year. She’s done a wonderful job for us and we all appreciate her effort.

The iris show is over and now it’s time for me to turn my thoughts to UNYHS’s cut-leaf show.

I’ve been walking around the yard, admiring all my healthy hosta and deciding which I’ll enter. Please, all members, enter at least a few leaves on Saturday. It will be very helpful if you contact me and give me an approximate number you’re bringing, so I can make sure there are enough display tables ready.

We are still looking for the UNYHS vases. Check your garages, closets and attics to see if they’re lurking in a forgotten location. The iris society has loaned us plenty of containers, but as a club, we should have our own.

I’ll visit a few thrift stores and search for suitable containers this week; each member can check their homes for some. Here are some images of the vases Dave and Cindy Jennings donated and one of the type of vase (in various sizes) my Ohio daylily-hosta group used.

I view this exhibit not only as a way to showcase hosta for the general public, but also as practice for a future AHS- sanctioned show. I’ll bring unofficial entry forms to be filled out with exhibitor name, hosta name, section and class for each hosta entered. To find which section and class your named hosta belongs in:

Visit the American Hosta society web page. Pull down the menu under Hosta Judging and select “Show Judging”. About 2/3 down the page is the classification section. Refer to the Quick Reference Table of Leaf Sizes and Colors and 2016 Full Classification list to find section and class for each hosta you plan to enter. These publications can be downloaded.

For example, I have H. ‘Dark Shadows’. Consulting the classification list, it belongs in Section II class 6B. I’ve drafted my husband and his laptop to help us with classification on Saturday.

Refer to Meg Dalton’s excellent handout in this newsletter titled “Preparing Leaves For A Hosta Show” . Leaves have to be cut and conditioned (immersed in water) the night before or they will wilt.

Many hands make light work; we need volunteers to set up and take down the exhibit, place entries in their proper location and talk to the public about hostas. Please come Saturday, enter a few leaves and, above all, find out how much fun a show can be. Page 2 of 12

Preparing Leaves for a Hosta ShowMeg Dalton

The first and most important thing to remember is that a Hosta Show is FUN!!! There is something about walking into a room of beautiful leaves staged to show themselves to their best advantage.

Selecting Leaves for the Show• Choose mature plants. It is important that the leaf you choose is

representative of the hosta plant in both size and color. Choose the largest example where possible.

• Choose leaves with no visible damage, no tears, or pin holes.• Choose leaves that show symmetry.• Gather the labeling materials. I suggest a Sharpie fine point

permanent marker along with a roll of masking tape. Write the name on a piece of tape and wrap loosely around the leaf stem as you cut. Don't rely on your memory.

• If you have an unidentified leaf that is unusual or especially attractive, bring it anyway. lt can be displayed for educational purposes and someone may even be able to identify it for you.

Cutting and Grooming LeavesTake care to properly clean leaves. An entry should have no dirt or other debris, insects, or spider webs anywhere on the leaf surface or on the petiole. Pay particular attention to the point where the leaf meets the petiole where dirt often becomes lodged.

• Leaves are best cut early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Evaluate your leaves as best you can a few days prior to the show and tentatively select the ones you would like to bring to the show.

• The leaf stem should be cut as long as possible. You can remove excess length later during preparation of the exhibit for show.

• A sharp knife should be used to make a clean cut. After cutting, hold the leaf up to the light to further inspect for major holes, damage or other large flaws that you may have missed.

• If significant flaws are found, you may want to select another leaf.• After cutting the leaves, place them in cool water in a cool place out

of strong sunlight and drafts. This will help to keep your leaves fresh for the show.

• Use liquid soap, cotton balls, q-tips, etc. on all leaf surfaces.• Never clean a blue leaf by any other means than water washing and

do not rub or the waxy coating will come off and your blue leaf will be green. The judges would prefer a little dirt than damaged surfaces in this particular case.

• Don't forget to clean the back side and the petiole. Leaves may be cut a day or two prior to the show but the later you cut them, the fresher they will be.

• Immerse the entire leaf in cool water overnight, the leaves will stay upright and hold their shape longer. I usually put them in the bathtub, run enough cold water to cover the leaves, then put towels on top to keep them submerged. I was a little obsessive, don't you think?

Please continue to promote this Fantastic Lecture to all your friends and colleagues at your Garden Club Meetings, Master Gardener Gatherings, Bridge/Poker Card Games, Book Clubs and/or Church/Bible Study Groups, etc. It's now time to share this with everyone you know so they too can plan to attend! Join us for a fantastic educational lecture…

"Ten Best Hostas and Friends" by Rick Goodenough

AHS Facebook ModeratorSave the Date now and plan to attend

To be held on Saturday, July 9th (Lecture at 12:30 pm)At the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Albany County Office

at 24 Martin Road, Voorheesville, NY 12186

This informative educational lecture is co-sponsored by the Upstate New York Hosta Society (UNYHS) and the Hudson Adirondack Daylily Society (HADS) E-mail [email protected] for more information.

“Ten Best Hostas and Friends” is an illustrated lecture by one of the more visible names in Hosta hybridizing, Rick Goodenough from the Boston area. He will be discussing three engaging segments, the Ten Best Hostas ever introduced; the Ten Best Hostas he has introduced and the Ten Best Woodland Perennials for the shade garden. Rick will cover why they made his list and other anecdotal and cultural points along the way. There will be ample time for Questions and Answers after each segment of the presentation.

TEN BEST WOODLAND PERENNIALSI grow some 100 or so various species in my woodland garden and love the interaction with other plants and the visual excitement that comes when seeing the living tapestry growing and blooming in harmony. Lillium martagon 'Claude Shride' hits my top ten list because it just keeps performing year after year and puts on ever more magnificent displays

TEN BEST HOSTAS INTRODUCED BY RICK GOODENOUGHOut of William and Eleanor Lachman's H. 'Sand Pebbles' line, 'Stag's Leap has easily been included in my top ten hosta introductions as it stands with an upright classic vase form with waterfalls for leaves that form a magnificent sight in the garden. The creamy edges flare back into the leaf centers exposing other colors which delight the eye.

TEN BEST HOSTAS OF ALL TIME (imho!)While not the most widely grown, H. 'Gunther's Prize' is one of the most esteemed hostas attempted in collectors' gardens across the U.S. today. The unusual and marvelous striations and splotches of colors make this hosta a stand-alone favorite for garden visitors as its' radiance shines out the call, "look at me'.

There will also be several local Vendors on site selling a variety of perennials from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm and continuing for an hour after the lecture. You are also encouraged to visit the beautiful Display Gardens in all their Glory behind the Cooperative Extension Building either before or after the lecture. There are twenty-two different gardens, designed and maintained by CCE Master Gardeners that give visitors examples of practices and plants that can be adapted to the home environment. Each garden demonstrates a distinctive feature of design or maintenance, and showcases plantings that are appropriate for the Capital District region. Plantings include trees and shrubs as well as annuals and perennials. (You will see a Conifer, Vegetable, Native Plant and Blue & White Garden as well as others!)

A LITTLE ABOUT OUR GUEST LECTURER:

Rick lives with his wife, Sheila in Marshfield, Massachusetts. Marshfield is in the SE Boston area toward Cape Cod. He is a member of the New England Hosta Society. He is also a long time member of the American Hosta Society. Rick enjoys on-going development of his 1+ acre sloped garden and hosta walk.

Rick became interested in hostas when living in Indianapolis in the early nineties upon visiting the hosta garden/nursery of Marge Soules. He was first amazed at the variety of hosta plants and quickly became interested in the more unusual variegation patterns on plants like ‘High Fat Cream’, ‘Cynthia’, ‘Joseph’, ‘Spilt Milk’ and ‘Iron Gate Supreme’. He collected several beginner hostas before career relocation to the Boston area in 1996.

The home he and Sheila acquired in Marshfield had no garden and the back was a steeply sloped and forested hillside. Rick began work on it and has continued to this day in building stone terraces and using cobbles from old Boston streets for paths in the garden. Larger trees were left in place to provide high shade that our favorite shade plant so appreciates.

After learning that hostas with color variations were essentially only produced by streaked pod parents, Rick knew that hybridizing was something he wanted to try. ‘Fascination’ was one of his first streakers and he quickly added ‘Galaxy’, ‘Alan Haskell’, ‘Dorothy Benedict’ and ‘Outrageous’ to his growing stable of breeders.

Rick began hybridizing and has named and introduced over 200 cultivars of his own seedlings and continues to enjoy advancing the species through his hybridizing efforts.

He has served in a number of roles in the New England Hosta Society, and currently serves as Trustee. He has served the AHS on the Executive Committee and presently serves as Social Media Chair and moderator of the AHS Face Book Page which is approaching 6,000 members from around the globe. Rick has written numerous articles for the AHS Hosta Journal and other publications and gives presentations and lectures on hostas and other gardening related topics. In 2014 he launched a new FaceBook Page, Snowdrops in American Gardens and in 2015 launched and hosted Snowdrops in American Gardens Study Day. In 2015 he also successfully imported CITES controlled rare Snowdrop bulbs from the UK for himself and other collectors.

Bring your Beautiful Photo's!

Since member's had so much fun at our first two photo contests, we thought we would repeat it again at this year's Holiday Gathering. So get out your photo's or camera's and take those beautiful shots this summer and fall! Photos must be 5" X 7" size with no frames or mats. We still feel that the cheapest place to obtain the enlargements is at Wal-Mart's or CVS but if you know of a better source…please let us know! When you arrive at the meeting, each member who will be entering photos will select their own mat color and mount their photo's. A black or white mat will be supplied. Please place your name on the back side of each photo. Each member may submit up to two (2) photos per category. The following are a couple of the photos entered thus far…look for more in our next newsletter!

The categories for the next photo contest are as follows: #1 Best Plant Oddity #2 Best Water feature in a Garden Setting #3 Best photo of one individual Hosta leaf

With permission, Dave Jennings would like to again scan your photo's so that they can be used in one of our future newsletters. (A simple permission Form will be distributed at the meeting). He will return originals once they are scanned for future use in our Shades of Green Newsletter.

So please consider entering those beautiful photos and of course ribbons will be once again awarded! Please contact Cindy if you have any questions.
