A group of children at Oakfi eld Academy have created a group called ‘Better Bath Street’ They chose to change Bath Street because, in their opinion, it is not a very interesting place and it is not very safe. The group say, “Our fi rst idea is to change the old Boston Barber shop into a graffi ti shop called “Graffi ti Galore.” This will hopefully stop illegal graffi ti and give people a chance to learn street art. Our second idea is to introduce cycling lanes on the roads in the centre of town to reduce bicycle related accidents. Young children who are on stabilisers would be able to cycle on the pavement to avoid them taking up too much room in the lanes. Lastly, our third idea is to collect more recycling bins to put out on the road. Five different schools in Frome will be designing and decorating the bins to make them look more obvious in which bin to put your recycling in.”

It might have been a wet, windy, miserable Friday, but the children at Vallis First School, Frome were not deterred. Running a tight schedule, strategically planned out, Michaela the chair of the VSA (Vallis School Association) directed children, teachers and assistants around six different sporting stations with the sound of her whistle! Activities included football dribbling skills, catching skills and the ‘Hoop station shown above.Vallis First School hold a sponsored Sports Morning every year, the whole school are involved and with such a logistical operation to arrange the school is lucky to have volunteers to help and Frome Town Football Club pictured below, who also give their time freely to support this event. It’s all about encouraging a healthy lifestyle at Vallis First School and whilst the children were participating in their sporting event a team of volunteers were preparing a healthy snack for the children to have after. Chopped fruit and a healthy drink to reinforce the health benefi ts of exercise, good food and hydration – the children are certainly being given good foundations for life and they are having fun whilst learning.

On Thursday 19th April, 16 pupils from Selwood School went to British Aerospace at Filton, Bristol on a science, technology, engineering and maths trip about rocket engineering to encourage a career in science. When we got there we watched a presentation by the founder of Starchaser, Steve. After the presentation we were split into groups. We made rockets, which were launched with real rocket propellant later on in the day. Steve performed a propulsion lab science show which included exploding hydrogen balloons, mini rocket bottles and elephant tooth paste! Then, we went outside and launched our rockets. The group who came on this trip enjoyed the whole day and had lots of fun!By Ellie Seviour and Steph Smith 8E

46 year 8 pupils and 4 members of staff from Selwood were lucky enough to get the chance to visit The Palace of Westminster. We arrived at Portcullis House in time to meet our MP David Heath. We saw the scaffolding which would be used to hoist the Queen’s new stained glass window into place - a gift from the MPs to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. The tour continued on into St Stephen’s hall where artistic paintings, statues and also Roman mosaics were placed on the walls. We were stunned by the Queen’s throne which like most of the room is made of gold leaf except two angel statues that are made of pure gold. Later in the day, the children headed down the River Thames on a boat trip to Tower Bridge. We saw many famous sights like: The London Eye, Big Ben, The Tower of London, the Gherkin and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre plus many more. We all had a great day and felt very lucky to be able to visit the buildings which are so important in the running of our country.By Mia Regler and Alice Macdonald

both rugby and French. It was an amazing experience to learn new French words such as ‘sautez’ for jump, ‘mélée’ for scrum and ‘coup de pied’ for kick. Simon, who played three seasons at Stade Français, was an ideal player to inspire the children in both Rugby and French. The Language Through Sport session was led by Bath Rugby Foundation’s Vicky Heslop, who works on a variety of projects in schools across the area. Kim Slade, teacher of Langham Class said: “We are encouraging our children to learn through the Olympic and Para-Olympic values such inspiration, determination, excellence and respect. FATHER’S DAYA writing competition organised by the Frome Community Learning Partnership (FCLP) has announced the winners from 400 entries this year. The Partnership wanted to give pupils a purpose for writing and therefore encourage them to put pen to paper and develop their writing skills. It also promoted children’s ability to develop their ability and to craft and draft and write inspirationally and accurately. There were two competitions, one to make up a story with the fi rst sentence taken from an existing book and another to write a poem in any style and on any subject, with the condition that the poem had a line from an already published poem. Each of the winners received a book token.Head teacher of Selwood Academy, Stephen Kirby, on behalf of the FCLP, said: “Our thanks to the six judges who responded to the newspaper article that launched this competition and who volunteered to share the judging between them. They were Annabel Claridge, Angela Moss, Lindsey McLennan, Richard Wallis, Karin Campagna and Anne Bourke.“All 400 entrants will receive a certifi cate and the winning pieces will be typed and distributed in a booklet to each of the 17 schools and also to the six judges. There were many excellent, high-quality entries – we certainly have a wealth of talent in Frome.”

Learning to sing or learning a musical instrument is a great skill for children to learn. It’s a way in which they’re able to express themselves, can help ease any stress in their life and gives them a boost of confi dence in their own ability. For those children who fancy it, there are always music performance classes available, often incorporating dance and drama too, where the eventual goal focuses on putting on a performance for parents. Other classes are more focused on the enjoyment factor of singing or your childs chosen instrument, although these may also may involve occasional performances too.

Some of the benefi ts from learning to sing or learning a new musical instrument areConcentration Learning a musical instrument or singing will help your child develop concentration, as they must focus on a particular activity over extended periods of time.Coordination Practicing musical instruments improves hand-eye coordination. Relaxation Researchers acknowledge that certain types of music can aid relaxation by lowering heart rates and blood pressure. Patience Children must develop patience and perseverance, which will help them later in life when they must tackle other more diffi cult challenges. Self-Confi dence The act of learning and performing, the encouragement of a teacher and the enthusiasm of a proud parent, will build in a child a sense of pride and confi dence. Some schools still offer the chance to learn a musical instrument, especially the recorder to start with, and instrument lessons may be available through your Local Education Authority’s Music Services. If you’re not sure, it’s worth enquiring to fi nd out what’s available in your area. There are also lots of music teachers offering private tuition for children of all ages. If you’re not sure which instrument your child would like to play, or be best suited to, then a music teacher may be able to offer them the opportunity to try out different options.

Father’s Day is always held on the third Sunday of June. It is a day to honor fathers and father fi gures, such as grandfathers and fathers-in-law. Many people make a special effort to visit their fathers or to send them a card or gifts.

There are some suggestions that the idea of Father’s Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the sun as the father of the universe. Since the summer solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father’s Day, some people see a link between the two.The idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. There, a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day celebrations to plan a day to honor fathers. Father’s Day has been celebrated in June since 1910 in the USA. The celebrations in the United Kingdom are thought to have been inspired by the American custom of Father’s Day.

Now that summer is around the corner and many people have their summer holidays booked, the all-important beauty countdown has begun, and many women are preparing for beach bods ready to recline on sun loungers supping mojitos! To get in tip-top condition for your holiday, follow our beach babe guide to getting groomed and gorgeous in time for take-off.

First of all, prepare to tan, fi rm up your wobbly bits then get silky skin, glossy locks and gorgeous feet & hands...and you’ll be ready to dazzle.

Beach Beautiful

Try a few sessions at the gym or with a personal trainer before you go away, exercise will help the wobbly bits fi rm up, lose weight and the boost of circulation is also great for the skin.

We would never recommend crash diets but if you would like to lose a few pounds for the beach, speak to your local slimming consultant.

Try waxing or electrolysis for a long lasting de-fuzzing!

Make sure you have fantastic looking feet when wearing your fl ip fl ops by having a pedicure. The same with your hands, try a manicure so your fi ngers look perfect holding that cocktail.

A trip to the Hairdressers before take-off will ensure your hair is in tip top condition for the sun and don’t be afraid to wear hats on holiday. This will protect your hair from harmful rays.

Don’t be afraid to accessorise swimwear or beachwear. It can take the attention away from problem areas and big jewellery makes your body appear smaller.

Apart from protecting your eyes, sunglasses are an instant confi dence boost, adding allure regardless of what you’re wearing.

Lastly, it’s always great to feel your best but as every woman obsesses about at least one part of their body. Remember this and then get on with enjoying yourself, it’s YOUR holiday!

Tanned skin always looks slimmer and sexier. Before you go on holiday, apply a fake tan either at home or professionally by a salon

Games for...

Car Journeys

This is a simple guessing game for which you just need two kids! Great for passing the odd waiting moment or car journey.Age: AnyThe children face each other and count to 3. On ‘3’ they put out one hand - either as a fist or with 1, 2 or 3 fingers extended, shouting out at the same time a number between 1 and 6. Add up the number of fingers extended. If a child guessed the exact number of fingers shown they score 2 points. If they guessed nearest the number of fingers shown, they score 1 point. If there is a tie, no points are scored. The first to a given number or points - perhaps 5 or 10 - wins.

I Packed My Suitcase is a classic memory game which is useful for all sorts of occasions, from a doctor’s waiting room to a long car journey! You can adapt it to all ages of kids, and adults enjoy playing as much as children.

Age: 5+ The first player thinks of a word beginning with the letter ‘a’ and then says, for example: “I packed my suitcase with an apple”. The next player repeats the sentence and adds something beginning with ‘b’, for example: “I packed my suitcase with an apple and a banana”. The next player adds a word beginning with ‘c’: “I packed my suitcase with an apple, a banana and a canary.”Play continues until someone can’t remember the list or makes a mistake. Depending on their age, you can either prompt them or disqualify them! Keep going until all players but one are disqualified, or until you reach the end of the alphabet.

Diamond Jubilee Collage

Even the youngest children can enjoy having a go at creating a Diamond Jubilee collage using symbols to represent Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne.

We started by drawing the number 60 in gold pen on an A3 sheet of construction paper. The boys were then given a selection of crafty bits and pieces from which to choose. For a more complex collage you might to include photos of the Royal Family, palaces or state coaches, royal symbols such as crowns, sceptres, and even a corgi or two! You could also add Union Jacks and Commonwealth fl ags.

John at Garston Vets says:“When the weather warms up it will be perfect for fl eas. Make sure your pet is up to date with their fl ea treatments. Remember prevention is better than cure.”

Hello, I’m a red barred chameleon. I live from fi ve to nine years of age and I love to climb which is why I need a tall enclosure. Madagascar is where I originally come from, so I need a humid environment. I have a long extendable tongue which is longer than my body which I use to quickly catch my favourite foods – crickets’ and locust. Like you, I need to eat greens as part of a balanced diet. I can camoufl age myself by changing colour which is why I’m sometimes diffi cult to fi nd. I will also change colour depending on my mood. I’m also unique because I can rotate my eyes 360° and move them independently. Fully grown, I can measure up to 8inches whereas males can grow up to 20 inches! My feet are special because they are clamped shaped with small claws which helps me to climb more easily.

Chicken breasts (or fi sh fi llets for fi sh fi ngers)Plain fl ourEgg (beaten)Fresh breadcrumbs Black pepper and dried herbs (optional)

Cut uncooked chicken breasts into pieces (either strips for chicken fi ngers or chunks for chicken nuggets). First dip them into fl our (seasoned with pepper and herbs if you like), then into beaten egg and fi nally breadcrumbs - this can be fun if you set up a conveyor belt system and have your children helping. The best way to make the breadcrumbs is to put some day-old bread in a blender, although you can crumble it by hand so that it becomes fi ne breadcrumbs. Brush with a little oil and cook under the grill for 10 to 15 mins, or bake in the oven at 190C/Gas 5 for about 15 to 20 mins, turning halfway through. Serve with vegetable hash, cheesy mash or potato & caulifl ower cakes and vegetables.

Homemade Chicken nuggets

6 tablespoons butter3/4 cup sugar (granulated or caster)2 eggs1/2 cup milk14 strawberries, preferably fresh 2 cups all-purpose (plain) fl ourPinch salt1 tablespoon baking powderStrawberry jam

Heat oven to 350F, 180C, Gas Mark 4Grease a muffi n tin or fi ll with paper liners.Cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, and then add the milk.Chop the strawberries up into small chunks, then stir them carefully into the batter, trying not to break them up too much. Sift the fl our, salt and baking powder into the bowl, then fold in. Do not over mix.Fill muffi n cups halfway. Add a scant teaspoon of jam, then add more batter to fi ll two thirds of the cup. Bake until the muffi ns begin to brown and a toothpick comes out clean (about 20 to 25 minutes).Remove the muffi ns from the tin and cool.
