GARLAND – The Garland Grange is asking the community to help support the troops and their families stationed overseas by supporting the “Coups for Troops” program.

The program was started in 2011 by Stephanie Almasy after attending a couponing class. She learned that military families could use coupons which were expired up to 6 months at the commissary. After packaging and sending to the military families, within a few months over four hundred families signed up to receive coupons, since then the program’s need has increased steadily. The Maine State Grange recently qualifi ed as a satellite

“Coups for Troops” programsupported by Garland Grange

collection center where coupons are collected in bulk, then pack-aged and mailed directly to indi-vidual families overseas.

The premise of this program is “All you have to do is use scis-sors,” says Andrea Rollins, pro-gram director. “We are simply asking people to clip out the coupons. You don’t need to worry about expiration dates. The only coupons which cannot be used the ones for specifi c stores.”

Garland Grange is asking any-one who wishes to donate any unwanted coupons to bring them to the Grange Hall on the second Friday of each month between 5 and 7 p.m., which is when their monthly public suppers are held.

You can also drop off them off on the regular meeting night on the fi rst and third Fridays of each month at 7:30 p.m. The Garland Grange Hall is located on Oliver Hill Road in Garland.

“Dropping the coupons off dur-ing supper should be easy,” adds Rollins. “We already have supper patrons who come each month with their collection of Campbell Soup Labels, Box Tops for Edu-cation, pennies for House in the Woods, and soda can tabs for the Shriners.” Other pickup options of coupons is available by contact-ing 717-7027 or through the Gar-land Grange #76 Facebook page.

On Saturday May 10th the town is coming together to tidy things up. The long winter has left us with lots of roadside litter and if we all pitch in we can clean it up and make it look great! It is our hope that the citizens of Guilford will show pride in our community and lend a helping hand. The Red Maple is sponsoring a free cookout for volunteers. New Balance of Skowhegan is donating garbage bags for the day. Goulette’s IGA is providing rubber gloves and water for vol-unteers as well as helping us spread the word. We appre-ciate the generous donations and all we need from YOU is to come out from 8-12 that day and do your part for your community. We would love to have more local businesses be involved as well. Individuals or your group/class/family/pack/organization can help by adopting a street, road, neigh-borhood, block or area anywhere in Guilford by visiting:

facebook.com/GuilfordMaineCommunityCleanUpDay You can also contact the town office at 876-2202 or Julie at 343-1010. This event is free & we will even take dispose of

the day’s trash for you! With some teamwork we can make this town shine!

Special thanks to the Eastern Gazette, Red Maple, New Balance and IGA!!

Modern Woodmen of America and the Town of Dexter would like to thank all who joined hands and participated in the 3rd Annual Town Clean-up on Saturday, May 3rd. CORINNA - The presentation of “North Woods Nonsense” by Andrew Ross, a play presented by the Levi Stewart Community Theater, will be on May 16, 17, 30, and 31 at 7 p.m. at the Stewart Library Building in Corinna.

The synopsis for the play is: “A run-down motel in the woods of northern Maine is the scene for most of the action in this wacky comedy. Handyman Pete has written a newspaper article about Bigfoot kidnapping a local resident. The story is complete fi ction but it was published in a tacky tabloid newspaper. The rumored sightings of Sasquatch provide the perfect excuse for the worst congressman in history to visit the hotel. Colorful locals, the congressman’s aides, reporters, and wacky guests hoping to see Bigfoot add to the zany fun.”

The Corinna Methodist Church will sell a combination $10 ticket for the church supper and admis-sion to the show on May 31 only. All other admission is $6 at the door. For more information about the show, look at the Levi Stewart Com-munity Theater page on Facebook at www.facebook.com/lsctheater.

MAINE - The Board of Directors of Penquis has announced that Kara Hay has been named its next President and Chief Executive Offi cer. Beginning June 18, Hay will lead Penquis as it continues the mis-sion to assist individuals and families in preventing, reducing, or eliminating poverty in their lives.

Board President Tom Lizotte said, “In a strong fi eld of fi nalists, the search committee was impressed with Ms. Hay’s understanding of the Penquis culture, dedication to its mission, and with her work ethic, intelligence, confi dence and energy. We feel she will bring new ideas to the table and keep Penquis moving forward through this leadership transition.”

A Maine native, Hay holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre from the University of Maine, a Bach-elor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Hawaii at Hilo and a Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Argosy University, Hawaii. She has extensive experience working with children, families and communities. Hay has served as a Deputy Director and Operations Manager for the Penquis Child Development Department since 2009. Previously, she worked as a Mental Health Casework Supervisor for the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, as a Children’s Service Coordinator providing direct services and support to families experiencing domestic violence, and as a Family Therapist and a Child Development Specialist. She has also worked as an independent consultant, providing training and consulting services to parents, mental health providers, early childhood special-ists, and nonprofi t and school staff.

Charlie Newton, retiring President and CEO, commented on the Board’s appointment, “I am very pleased with the Board’s selection. Kara is very talented and is committed to the Penquis mission and culture. Penquis has a very skilled, dedicated and professional staff that will fully support Kara in her new position. Penquis will be in very good hands.”

The Board of Directors looks forward to working with Hay. “We are especially pleased to be able to pro-mote someone from within the organization to the CEO position,” said Lizotte. “Our employees represent our greatest asset. We value their contributions and commitment to the agency’s mission. She will be an effective leader and champion of the Penquis mission to provide information and advocacy to facilitate institutional change directed towards the alleviation of the causes of poverty.”

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Will’s Shop ‘n Save in Dover-Foxcroft has been named among the fi nalists in The Institute and the Maine Fam-ily Business Awards.

The roots for Maine’s Institute for Family-Owned Business - and the annual Awards - is traced to 1995 and Shep Lee of Lee Auto Malls and his daughter Cathy. They proposed the University of Southern Maine establish a center to serve as an ongoing resource where busi-ness-owning families could achieve full potential.

Twenty years after its founding, the Institute is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profi t organization, committed to family-owned busi-nesses in Maine. It is reported that family-owned businesses repre-sent about 80% of all businesses in Maine.

Through consulting, seminars, workshops, and networking, the In-stitute assists family-owned fi rms in meeting the unique managerial challenges and opportunities that are companion to operating and sustaining a successful family enterprise. An executive director and a volunteer board of directors guide this non-profi t entity.

To cap the Institute’s annual work, the Awards, presented with the law fi rm Verrill Dana each year in May, is a gala that attracts fam-ily businesses large and small and an audience numbering nearly 300. This celebration pays more than just recognition; it serves as a vehicle for networking and opening up all shades of possibilities for families seeking to grow their business.

One comment, made recently, may best capture the essence of the Awards, and in many ways describe the Institute: “While applying for the Awards, we discovered a lot about ourselves ... and that alone made the effort worthwhile.”

DEXTER - A spokesperson for Dunham’s Furniture, “a name synonymous with quality furniture for the past 23 years,” announced this week that the store is going out of business at both locations, 1221 Broad-way in Bangor and 183 Spring Street in Dexter, ME.

“The looming economic downturn of the past decade as well as a desire to spend the winter months in a warmer climate motivated Jerry and Dodie Dunham and their family to make the fi nal decision to close their stores. A huge ‘$2,000,000 Going-Out-of-Business” sale is in progress to liquidate the entire inven-tory in both stores”, the spokesperson noted.

The history of Dunham’s Furniture began 23 years ago in 1991 when Dunham’s Discount Furniture opened in Bangor. Son Jim joined the growing enterprise, and three years later the business was moved to Dover-Foxcroft as Dunham’s Furniture, located closer to the Dunham’s family home. There, the furniture business continued until it was moved to Dexter in 1999 where it began to fl ourish. Jim’s wife, Tricia, had joined the family business by this time in the sales and management of the Dexter store. Then, 2006 brought the opportunity to reopen Dunham’s Furniture again in Bangor where son Brian and his wife, Kim, operate the business with the family values that have continued to this day.

“The economic slowdown came later to Maine than it did to the rest of the country,” explained Jim Dunham. “Now, our state is taking much longer to come out of it. We have fought very hard the past eight years to keep our business well and thriving. The time had to come when the effort just wasn’t bringing a return and that time is right now.” Gerry Dunham added, “We appreciate the very loyal customers we have had throughout our 23 years of doing business in Dexter and the greater Bangor area. We send out a great, big Thank You to all of them!” When asked about plans for the future, Dunham replied, “Winters in Florida were always a long-term plan of ours. Now we will be able to realize them!”

The Dunham’s Furniture website, www.dunhamsfurniture.com, states, “It was and always will be our mission to offer quality furniture at affordable pricing and to offer excellent customer service.” He contin-ued by noting that now the quality furniture Dunham’s offers will be priced with deep discounts during their $2,000,000 Going-Out-of-Business sale. Prices are drastically reduced on all upholstery, recliners, mattress sets, bedroom, dining room, occasional pieces, lamps, wall art and accessories. Nothing in the stores will be held back until all inventory is gone, he concluded.

Open to the public at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2014, store hours at both stores will be Monday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 6: 00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information on the $2,000,000 Going-Out-of-Business” sale at Dunham’s Furniture, stop by or call the store at 1221 Broad-way in Bangor, 207-947-0179 or 183 Spring Street in Dexter, ME, 207-924-3066.

“...happy...”To the Editor:I was happy to see that the GOP Convention was about unity, which is truly needed in the State of

Maine. There is no unity in Senate District 4, thanks to Paul Davis. There is an unwritten rule in political par-

ties that you do not run against a sitting incumbent in a primary. Doug Thomas told Paul in September of 2013 that he was going to run again in 2014. Paul, not liking to be a small fi sh in a big pond, or trying to break John Martin’s record of years served in the legislature, is breaking that rule by running in the June primary.

Is Andy Torbett Paul’s campaign manager? Every week he writes letters to the editor against Sen. Doug Thomas. Andy, what do you think about Paul breaking the election law by putting his signs out early? The law states, no signs before six weeks prior to an election. The earliest date was April 29, 2014. I saw Paul’s signs in St. Albans, Hartland, and Palmyra on Thursday, April 24, and in Sangerville on Saturday April 26, 2014.

Former State Senator, Stephen E. HallGuilford

“…supporting Senator Doug Thomas…”To the Editor:I spent a signifi cant amount of time working closely with Senator Doug Thomas during the fi rst half of

2013 to get access to affordable prescription drugs for the citizens of our state. Senator Thomas worked with me on a daily basis to make sure that the employees at Hardwood Products and Puritan Medical products could get access to prescription drugs from Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

Senator Thomas worked for the employees of Hardwood and Puritan and the residents of Maine for many hours early in the morning and late into the night. He provided us with access to members of the leadership at the state house and worked to get bipartisan support on this key piece of legislation. I was in constant communication with both Senator Thomas and the state employee’s union who were working together to protect our residents for high prescription drug costs.

After working with Senator Thomas for an extensive period of time I know that he is the right person to represent Senate District 4. His tireless efforts to support both the people and businesses in our district have saved the employees at Hardwood and Puritan over $100,000 since this law was passed and will continue to save them money in the future. This money can now be used in our community and continue to foster economic growth.

Please join me in supporting Senator Doug Thomas in the District 4 Senate primary.Scott WellmanGuilford

“Feel Good Piscataquis!” is being put on by the Piscataquis Regional YMCA and the Charlotte White Center. Charlotte White received a “Thriving in Place Across the Continuum of Care” grant and the Y received a “Healthy Community” grant. The goal of both grants is to help the community identify its top health concerns and then come up with collaborative community projects to help solve those concerns.

Each Community Conversation runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and includes a short supper followed by fun activi-ties and brainstorming to get the ideas about living healthy lives fl owing. They are planned for Tuesday, May 20 at the Piscataquis High School in Guilford, Wednesday, May 21 at the Milo Town Hall and Tues-day, June 2 at the Greenville Consolidated School.

PITTSFIELD - Sebasticook Valley Health (SVH) recently received a Special Sentiment from the State of Maine that was presented recently by Rep. Stanley Short (District 29) to SVH President and CEO/EMHS Senior Vice President Terri Vieira, who accepted the certifi cate with board chairman Michael Gallagher, chief medi-cal offi cer Robert Schlager, MD, and director of quality Sandi Delano, RN.

“Thank you for recognizing SVH’s efforts to reach national quality standards,” said Ms. Vieira. “Achieving quality ex-cellence is an effort that every employee makes happen every day.”

Rep Short commented on SVH’s “high quality delivery of care based on results from the Leapfrog hospital survey,” and complimented SVH for being the fi rst hospital in Maine to be recognized four years in a row for quality excellence. After his presentation, Rep. Short toured the new inpatient wing with Ms. Vieira, Mr. Gallagher, Dr. Schlager, and Ms. Delano.

SVH is the only hospital in Maine to have received recognition four years in a row by The Leapfrog Group, a national organization that recognizes U.S. health care groups for safety, quality and customer value. The standards used by Leapfrog are consistent with measures used by The Joint Commission, National Quality Forum and Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services. SVH has been accredited by the Joint Commission since 2002, and in 2013, it was recognized by The Joint Commission as a top performer nationally in key quality measures.

Rep. Short is serving his fi rst term in the House of Representatives, where he aims to bring jobs to the state and support Maine’s hardworking people.

For more information, contact Jennifer Yarbrough at 487-4000. Accredited by the Joint Commission, SVH comprises a progressive 25-bed critical access hospital and a wide range of outpatient services throughout the region. SVH is a member of Eastern Maine Healthcare System (EMHS).

DOVER-FOXCROFT – Maine First Lady Ann LePage recently joined the Maine Health Care Association (MHCA) in the Hall of Flags at the State House to honor the accomplishments of 33 people living in the state’s long term care facilities, including Dwight Woodworth of Hibbard Skilled Nursing and Rehabilita-tion Center, Dover-Foxcroft.

This was the 12th annual cel-ebration of the photography ex-hibit, entitled “Remember ME”, which features the black and white photographs and biogra-phies of citizens living in nurs-ing homes and assisted living facilities statewide. Residents ranging in age from 65-98, were decorated War heroes, moth-ers and fathers, and community leaders such as nurses, teachers,

pilots, and small business own-ers. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Woodworth was honored for his accomplishments as a disability rights activist and fundraiser. He is currently writing a book about vocational rehabilitation.

The primary purpose of the Remember ME project is to sa-lute the people who have spent the best years of their lives sup-porting their families, building their communities and serving their state and country. The project also urges the public, in-cluding lawmakers, to remember the selfl ess contributions of our elderly and disabled citizens who now depend on others for their care and safety.

According to MHCA Vice President and Communications Director Nadine Grosso, “Just

because these residents are less visible in the community doesn’t mean that we should forget their important contributions to our state and country. After giving to others all of their lives, they now depend on us for their daily med-ical and social care and we take that responsibility very serious-ly. This photographic tribute and recognition ceremony is our way of remembering them and saying thank you.”

Since its inception, the Re-member ME program has rec-ognized 433 long term care residents statewide. The Maine Health Care Association is a nonprofi t trade association, rep-resenting over 250 providers of long term care services to the state’s elderly and disabled citi-zens.

GUILFORD - Valley Grange, long known for collaborating with oth-er organizations, recently experienced some fi rst-hand benefi ts from teaming up with the Mountain View Youth Development Program in Charleston. A crew of youth and supervisors joined members to give the Valley Grange dining hall several coats of fresh paint from top to bottom.

The Youth Development outreach program is called “Helping Hands,” with a goal of developing pro-social skills and competencies by allowing detained and “shock sentenced” youth to earn the privi-lege of completing community service projects and develop work skills in the process.

“Truthfully, we never expected such energy and commitment—and a great job!” admitted Jim Annis, master of the Valley Grange in Guil-ford. “The kids brought an abundance of energy and some large ap-petites, but one thing the Grange is famous for is providing food.”

Lunch was part of the program as the crew came for two full days—the second day at their request so they not only could fi nish the job as planned, but also paint the entire 1200 square foot fl oor. The kids’ energy inspired members to join in and work alongside the kids.

Grange Program Director Walter Boomsma coordinated the project and says he was not only happy to see the hall looking so much better, he enjoyed watching Grangers “join hands with Helping Hands.” He says he’s particularly impressed with how the program works.

“Instead of requiring community service as an almost punishment, the Helping Hands Program seems to have made it a reward and that’s apparent from how hard the kids work and their attitudes while working,” he said. “I think they thanked us as much as we thanked them.”

Inspired by the help they were getting, Grange members and friends expanded the scope of the project to include a number of additional upgrades that included painting the huge wood-fi red kitchen range, adding some hand-made tie-backs to the curtains, and a thorough spring cleaning. Community Service chairperson Mary Annis notes that the timing is perfect. “We have our big community night coming up on May 16th when we present our Community Citizen of the Year Award. This year we’re going to really look our best!”

Boomsma said that he hopes the kids feel like they are part of the Grange and community as a result of their involvement. “We tried to explain that their work helps us and the community in so many ways. We could never maintain this building and do the work we do without people like these kids and their supervisors who give so much of themselves.”

For additional information about Valley Grange visit http://valley-grange.com. Information about the Mountain View Helping Hands project is available by calling the Mountain View Youth Development Center at 285-0880.

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Dover Cove Farmers’ Market begins its third season Saturday, May 17. The market will operate Saturdays 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and Tuesdays 2 – 6 p.m. through October on the corner of South St. (Rte 7) and Pine St. in Dover-Foxcroft, and hopes to fi nd an indoor location to extend the Market season to the end of December. Dover Cove Farmers’ Market welcomes credit/debit and EBT cards.

Maine is second only to Vermont in terms of our citizens’ access to locally-produced food. Represented at Dover Cove Farmers’ Market are Leaves and Blooms Greenhouse (Gale and Peter Robinson and family of Dover-Foxcroft), Pike Farm (Doug and Carolyn Pike of Exeter), Rollins Orchard (Ernest and Andrea Rol-lins and family of Garland), and Cupcakes, Etc. (Jim Castonguay of Guilford). Spruce Mill Farm (Dustin and Natasha Colbry of Dover-Foxcroft), Farmer Sean’s (Sean Anderson and Kat Batey of Charleston), and Fussing Duck Farm (J.J. Starwalker of Corinth) are new to our Market-come down and check them out!

Activities and special guests will be on hand at Saturday markets regularly throughout the season. Individuals or groups interested in entertaining and/or educating market-goers should contact Janet Sawyer at PCEDC (564-3638).

Those in a hurry on Saturday mornings may order online through Dover Cove Marketplace (http://harvesttomarket.com/farmers-market/Dover-Cove-Market-Place). Orders placed by 7 a.m. Fridays can be picked up at the outdoor market Saturdays 10 a.m. - noon. The online market offers locally-produced vegetables, cider, apples, maple syrup and baked goods year-round. Payment for online orders may be made at pick-up using cash, check, credit/debit, or EBT.

HHHHHI was in a accident and needed a vehicle but only had limited funds. Lee was recommended by my garage. I workedwith Darryl Henderson. He looked through his listing to find a car I would like in my price range. He found one inEllsworth. A few days later Darryl called and said the car was there and he was coming over so I could look at it andgo for a drive. I looked it over and went for a drive and was sold. I bought it the same afternoon. I feel Darryl went outof his way to be sure it was a car I would like. There was no pressure and noone tried to talk me into anything. Iwould recommend Lee to anyone looking for a vehicle. I know if I should need another vehicle Lee is the first and onlyplace I will go.

Things we want you to know: IMPORTANT 911 EMERGENCY RESPONSE INFORMATION. The U.S. Cellular Home Phone Device (“Device”) in conjunction with Home Phone Service (“Service”) (together the “U.S. Cellular Home Phone”) is a Commercial Mobile Radio Service and not a landline phone service. U.S. Cellular does not represent or warrant that the U.S. Cellular Home Phone is equivalent to landline phone service. 911 calls made using the U.S. Cellular Home Phone Service are routed using U.S. Cellular’ s automatic location technology and users should be prepared to provide their physical address to emergency responders. While the Device does contain a GPS chip, its connection may be limited due to the Device’s location within the home. The GPS chip will work best if the Device is located near a window or other opening. A corded or cordless landline phone must be connected to the Device in order to use the U.S. Cellular Home Phone to operate. A corded or Cordless landline phone is not included. While the Device does have a backup battery, if the landline phone to which the Device is connected requires external electric power to operate, Service (including the ability to make and receive 911 calls) will not be available during a power outage. Neither U.S. Cellular nor any of its affiliates shall be liable for any service outage and/or inability to access emergency service personnel, nor shall U.S. Cellular or any of its affiliates be responsible for the acts or omissions of emergenc ©2014 U.S. Cellular NonPromo_HomePhone_DI_7_5x16 75
