If thinking of renovat- ing a home, Frontier says not only think of cosmetic repairs, but also look at the poten- tial energy savings from a renovation project. Some potential reno- vation options that may yield the highest return on an investment are: Air Sealing – Sealing the “envelope” of your home (outer walls, ceil- ing, doors, windows and floors) is often the most cost effective way to im- prove the energy effi- ciency and comfort of your home. ENERGY STAR® estimates that a skilled contractor or knowledgeable home- owner can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling cost or 10 per- cent of the total energy bill for the home by air sealing. Air sealing will help block heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. Typical air sealing op- portunities in most homes revolve around: caulking at the base- board/subfloor level, caulking HVAC regis- ters at the floor/ceiling, using mastic to seal all duct work, and air seal- ing around doors and windows. Insulating – Insula- tion keeps a home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Several types of insula- tion are available de- pending on the application. When looking at insulation homeowners have op- tions such as: fiber- glass, cellulose, rigid foam board, and spray foams. When thinking of insulating, it is im- portant to understand that insulation per- formance is measured by R-value. R-value is the ability to resist heat flow. The higher the R- value the more insulat- ing power. In climate zone 4 (Kentucky) it is recommended that floor spaces be insulated with R-25/30, walls be insulated with R-19, and attic spaces to be insulated with R-38/60. Insulation works best when air is not moving through or around it, so it is very important to seal air leaks before in- stalling insulation. Sealing Ducts – In houses with forced-air heating and cooling sys- tems, ducts are used to distribute conditioned air throughout the house. In a typical house, about 20 percent of the air that moves through the duct sys- tem is lost due to leaks and poorly sealed con- nections. The result is higher utility bills and difficulty keeping the house comfortable. Be- cause of the location of some duct work, repair- ing or sealing them could be very difficult. However, exposed ducts in the attic, basements, crawlspaces, and garages can be repaired by sealing the leaks with duct sealant typi- cally called mastic.
