Induction Lighting is a proven lighting technology that has been around for over 100 years. Due to recent advancements in Electronic ballast/Generator technology, it has more recently become a viable option for the commercial and municipal markets. Induction Lighting has been utilized extensively for street lighting applications. An Induction Lamp is similar to a Fluorescent lamp in that mercury excites a gas filled inside the bulb. The emitted UV radiation in turn is converted into visible white light by the phosphor coating on the bulb. Fluorescent lamps, however, use electrodes inside the bulb to strike the arc and initiate the flow of current - each time the arc is struck, the electrodes degrade a little, eventually causing the lamp to flicker and then fail.Induction Lamps differ in that they do not use internal electrodes, but use a high-frequency generator with a power coupler. The generator produces a radio frequency magnetic field to excite the gas fill.

Don’t forget the sunscreen. This may be the most important step you can take in protecting yourself from sunburn and the dangerous long-term effects of sun exposure. Sunscreen creams and lotions come in a wide variety of sun protection factors (SPFs). The higher the SPF, the greater the protection.

Dress for skin success. If you are planning to be outdoors for any length of time, dress accordingly. While sunscreen is effective in preventing sunburn, clothing does an even better job of blocking the sun. And don’t forget to protect your soft and vulnerable facial skin by wearing a wide-brim hat or visor, which can offer better protection than sunglasses.

Don’t let the clouds fool you. Many people learn the hard way that you need to protect yourself from the sun even on cloudy and overcast days.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Putting moisturizer on a sunburn is kind of like putting a bandage on a cut. It won’t make the sunburn go away, but it can help it heal more quickly, and can help prevent long-term damage like premature wrinkling.

How To Avoid SunburnsThe United States accounts for approximately 20% of the world’s total electricity consumption for lighting, at an annual cost of over $40 billion. The largest share of this lighting electricity is used in commercial and public buildings, followed by residential lighting, industrial sector lighting, and outdoor/street lighting.

According to a recent report from Pike Research, fluorescent and light emitting diode lighting technologies will play an increasingly important role in the US market, making up over three quarters of that market by 2020.

“Fluorescent lighting technology is becoming more and more important in many key applications,” says Pike Research Senior Analyst Mike Wapner. “Fluorescent lighting is already very energy efficient, it has increasingly cost-effective dimming options, and it’s been around long enough for people to have familiarity and confidence with its performance in a variety of lighting situations.”

Wapner adds that while technical, market, and other barriers will somewhat hamper the growth of LED lighting in the beginning of this decade, adoption will start to accelerate by 2014-2015. Penetration of the outdoor stationary sector will grow first, partly because color rendering is less important in these applications (thus allowing use of the least expensive LEDs). When compared to the overall lighting industry, LED sales volumes will still be relatively low in those years, but high prices will lead to large revenue figures. The long life of LED products will also mean that most sales will go into new construction and retrofit situations, and there will be relatively little replacement business.

And even though technological, policy, and market trends appear to be driving the US lighting market away from incandescent lighting, they will not totally disappear any time soon. Many types of ‘specialty’ incandescent lamps are exempted from US regulations that will phase out the most common bulbs. Incandescent lamps are also inexpensive to manufacture and there is still nothing restricting their use in much of the world.

Pike Research’s study, ‘Energy Efficient Lighting for Commercial Markets’, examines the key technology and market trends that are driving the use of LED and other high-efficiency lighting in the commercial, industrial, and outdoor stationary sectors. The report includes a 10-year forecast for lamp and luminaire sales in the US across 10 different lighting technology categories in seven major building types and application sectors. In addition, the study provides SWOT analyses of 16 key industry players.
