b Frost River“ The Frost River has a smattering of everything—large and

small lakes, beautiful falls, winding beaver streams and high beaver dams, tough, poorly-maintained portages, canoeable rapids and adventurous options. It is by far my favorite route in the Boundary Waters.”

—Cliff Jacobson

Like paddling the Frost River, you’ll find a smattering of everything in this catalog. We specialize in waxed- cotton canvas packs, bags, and luggage, but at our

store in Duluth you’ll also find locally forged dinner bells, hand-made wool clothes, and even beer growler carry cases. 2 So give us a call (1-800-FROST-84), visit us online (FrostRiver.com), or stop by our shop in Duluth’s West End neighborhood, we’d love to hear from you!

WAXed cotton cAnvAsNicknamed “Tin Cloth”, waxed canvas has earned its reputation as the workhorse of natural fabrics. 2 The rugged cotton canvas is impregnated with a generations-old formula of waxes. Water simply beads up and runs off while the cotton allows the bag to “breathe.” S u r p r i s i n g l y , the fabric is not oily, it remains odorless, and the wax won’t wick into other fabrics. 2 Since the 1800s, field tan has been the original, traditional color for waxed cotton canvas. And we like it fine, just the way it is.

mAde in AmericAWith Frost River, you inherit a craft and a qual-

ity — distilled through generations — of packs and bags made in our hometown, Duluth. 2 Packs and bags made the old way, the

American way, where form relies on function, where the best tradi-tional materials are classically crafted into reli-able softgoods that last a lifetime and leave a leg-acy. 2 All our designs are built with care from start to finish by people who earn a living and keep manufacturing alive in the USA. Become the beneficiary of a couple hundred years of ex-perience — choose Frost River, and pass it on.

solid BrAss hArdWAreAll of the buckles, snaps, slides, and D-rings on Frost River packs and bags are solid brass. 2 It matters because Frost River stuff will outlast brass plating. Instead of turning steel grey the hardware will develop an old world patina. That’s the way it’s meant to be. Bonus points: brass clinking against brass makes a great sound.

leAther From red WingThe leather in our straps, reinforcements, and trim comes from the S.B. Foot Tannery in Red Wing, Minnesota. 2 In 1872, Silas Buck Foot began tanning leather to provide high grade footwear for fellow Minnesotans as a way to stay warm in the winter. In 1905 the Foot family partnered with what became Red Wing shoes. The partnership remains to this day.

Explorer DuffelsBouncing down a dirt track in Nairobi when a rogue rock punches a hole in the oil pan of your Land Rover. CorrespondentYou don’t have to be a war journalist to appreciate

all the Correspondent’s features. Rugged enough for a stint accompanying the

101st Airborne/3rd Infantry Division in Baghdad but classy enough for the

boardroom. 2 We paid attention to all the right details on this briefcase. Classy

leather accents, handles, and bot-tom. Front outside pockets close with brass buckles. Adjustable 48 inch web

shoulder strap included. Inside you’ll find a large zippered compartment, multiple

small pockets and a cardholder. Open back pocket. 12"h x 17"w x 51⁄2"d.

No. 884 $230

What the heck is “carryon”?“Will you be checking any bags on this flight?”

Do you know if your luggage will qualify to carry on the airplane? Our CarryOns will. All are sized to

fit inside the lowest common requirement of 45 linear inches (length + width + height). Being soft-sided and compressible, they’ll conform to fit inside the carry on size checks at ticket counters and are crammable into the necessary compart-ments on-board. Canvas construction means soft sided design; that equals options… getting your luggage to work for you instead of against you.

These days the toughest task for luggage is to survive the baggage handling at the air-port. Our ‘normal’ is to be set outside during a torrential downpour, and left to dry in

the sun. In fact our luggage looks forward to the airport. It considers it a vacation.

Leather Luggage TagCheap insurance is what it is. The Leather Luggage Tag saved my career. You see, I’m a freelance photographer and while on assignment on the Arctic island of Svalbard, my camera bag was stolen… or so I thought. While I was taking a sauna with the locals my bag disappeared along with any hope of making deadline. Surprisingly, two days later I got my stuff back. A local kid had found the pack with my luggage tag. Evidently a curious and hungry Arctic Fox had dragged the pack into the bush and eaten a sandwich I had packed. Like I said, cheap insurance. 3"h x 43⁄4"w.No. 845 $20

Frost River Accessory BagsSmall, Medium, and Large waxed canvas bags store and carry the small stuff that a traveler

(or homebody) needs to organ-ize. They hold a surprising amount due to their triangular shape, made by having a wide

base and zippered top. No han-dle, but they are simple and can

have many uses.

Standard Dopp KitWe don’t know what a “dopp” is either but this canvas

carry-all gathers your toiletries in one convenient bag. Now there’s space for all those little items needed when traveling. 2 Easy leather grab handle on the end. Zippered outside pocket and closure. Premium version features a leather bottom. 6"h x 10"w x 41⁄2"d .

Big, Medium & Little Manitou Shoulder BagsIf you were a modern bear family—living, say, near the Manitou River by Little Marais—Papa, Mama and Junior could each use one of these sizes. 2 The Big Manitou has two outside zippered compartments plus two outside pockets with brass button closures. Combined with multiple small interior pockets they add up to easy organization. The leather-trimmed front flap stays shut without a buckle. 2Offered in smaller sizes, the Medium and Lit-

tle have the same features and quality construction as the Big (except for the front pocket array: the Little Manitou

has three patch pockets and a leather business card holder). The Medium Manitou is an up-sized version

of the Little Manitou. 2 Dimensions: Little Mani-tou: 91⁄2"h x 12"w x 4"d, Medium Manitou: 101⁄2"h x 13"w x 4"d, Big Manitou: 11"h x 17"w x 5"dNo. 858 $110 No. 866 $135

Those generic synthetic black suitcases with wheels and pull out handles that are ubiquitous on airport carousels are

not luggage. Laurentian Luggage, hand built of durable, water-resistant waxed canvas, is real luggage. Luggage worthy of a spring trip to Paris; of a road trip

in your 1965 Alfa Romeo convertible; of a Caribbean cruise. 2 Attractive and

durable leather handles, grip and bottom. Secure zippered closure. Adjustable 48" web

Sawbill Trail Bar BagA favorite trail into the lake country, and a fa-vorite bag- the Sawbill is simple, functional, and a sight better-looking than it’s nylon relatives. 2 Attaches to most handlebars with leather straps & brass hardware, with D-rings on the side to run guy lines out to the brakehoods to stop any swinging (not really necessary, but we thought we’d let you make that call). It will safely convey cell phones, wallets, sunglasses and even a windbreaker with easy access (no twisting around or dismounting to get to a saddlebag), or a towel and book that you might want once you reach your secret lake just off the trail. 4"h x 12"w.No. 382 $50

We’ve named our bike bags after some of our favorite roads & trails up north, quiet places that invite a person to ride just a little bit farther, maybe just around that

next corner. 2 These aren’t quaint decorations: they’re highly functional, extremely well-built and durable workhorse bags that just happen to be antiques in the making —

they’re going to last you a long, long time and just get better-looking as they age.

Echo Trail Seat bagThe Echo Trail runs northwest out of Ely and through the boreal forest of northern Min-nesota and the BWCA towards Crane Lake. Unlike the small high-tech bags hanging on many bikes, the Echo will take all your tools, extra tubes and repair kit, and still leave room for lunch and a windbreaker. 2 A slender sleeve pocket inside holds a map, your wallet, or directions to your friends’ cabin near Lake Jeanette. There are two leather attachment slots on top that let you use an old bootlace to tie on a rolled-up rain jacket, or last week’s Sunday NY Times. 10"h x 6"w x 51⁄2"d.

Little Marais Messenger BagDesigned for bike-powered commuters or car-powered consumers, this bag

is at home toting a cyclist’s light change of clothes for work, or serving purse duty. 2 A simple, sling bag of waxed canvas and cotton web, the Little Marais can be worn across the back or under an arm. Either way it works to simply carry some stuff. Wide at the bottom, narrow at the top and closed with a zipper — about the only surprise with a Little Marais is the quality… and the value. No. 575 $35

Caribou Trail Bike BagThis versatile bike bag can

be mounted on a handlebar or

used as a medium-sized seat bag. Pile it on: ample external lashing points allow you the ability to add on to its carrying capacity and

its expandable size gives you capacity options. 7"h x 11"w x 7"d.

No. 388 $130

Gunflint Trail Seat BagWhen the Gunflint Trail takes off up the hill from Grand Marais on Lake Superior’s shore, you might not want to carry too much with you up the continuous and steep 5 mile-long grade to reach

the top (about an 800+ vertical foot gain) and the miles of coun-try road beyond. 2 The Gunflint lets you take the essentials with you (and maybe more than just a few luxuries) without overloading your bike and its motor. It’s a great commuting pack, too, bringing functional wilderness design to urban trails. But the two side pockets and a large top flap take on more gear than you’d think, so pack carefully before starting up the trail. 7"h x 18"w x 10"d.No. 383 $210

Highway 1 PanniersHighway 1 twists and turns from Minnesota’s North Shore to the North Dakota State Line. It goes through some of the most spectacular scenery you’ll ever visit, or re-visit. These panniers can be stuffed with camping gear if you’re going to ride the full 346 mile distance between Lake Superior and the Red River. Or just ride through Split Rock Light House State Park with a camera and essen-tials. Or just to stop in at the grocery store on the ride home from work. 2 Our Panniers fit securely on almost all racks, and besides their just plain classic cool looks they have plenty of no-nonsense features. Like ample top flaps that will let you pack more than you should into the main compartments and extra attachment points so you can lash even more gear on top. Priced and sold as a pair. Real sticks included! Each side: 11 1⁄2"h x 12"w x 61⁄2"d.No. 384 $190

with a century-old paraffin formula which makes the fabric waterproof yet breathable. Just re-apply Martexin to areas of

rough wear on your pack or bag. Rub in a little sparingly and heat it up a bit with a hair dryer.

Old No. 7 PackPut this classic box style pack in

your will — it almost certainly will outlast you! Built large and boxy for bulky gear. Good for canoeists who just simply like to bring the kitchen sink, thank you. 2 Fea-tures include adjustable padded leather backstraps, a tumpline to help distribute weight, water-re-sistant waxed canvas, brass buckle closures and leather cinch straps to keep the expandable flap closed. D-ring lash points allow for flexibility in tightening your load. 23h" x 21w" x 6d", 5,216 ci. Box Style. No. 750 $230

Grand Portage PackThe Grand Portage is a big, deep box style canoe pack. Long flaps off the side gussets, the front, and back of the pack make an adaptable and distinctive top closure. A wide 9" side gusset and the crossed flapstraps both set the Grand Portage apart from the other Frost River Canoe Packs. The top closure goes a long way toward keeping the weather out of the inte-rior of the pack. 2 The design also allows for vertical compression; the pack gets taller or shorter to suit your load. Waxed cotton canvas throughout, padded leather backstraps, solid brass hardware, and reliable construction all come together in a pack that’s made without compromise.No. 759 $260

Our Old-Style Canoe Packs always come with tumplines because we just plain believe in ‘em. Alternating between the tump and the backstraps will prevent fatigue. They have to be used correctly, though. The band does not go across your forehead, but

should sit above the forehead like this old woocut shows. Grab the sides of the tump-line and lean into a loaded pack; you’ll feel the weight transfer from your shoulders. Switch back to the shoulder straps when your back tires.

Tregurtha Canoe PackAt 1,013 feet, six inches in length, the Paul R.

Tregurtha is the biggest bulk carrier (i.e., ore boat) on the Great Lakes. Our largest canoe pack won’t match the tonnage of the biggest “thousand footer” but it will help you stow a nearly obscene amount of gear. Need to bring a lot of stuff? Need

to do it in just one trip? Consider the Tregurtha Pack. Just don’t send us the chiropractor’s bill when you’re finished. 2 Comes equipped with the standard fare: harness leather shoulder straps with buckskin-covered foam pad, double canvas bottom,

Woodsman PackWe’ve scaled down the bestselling Old No. 7 Pack for smaller loads, smaller people, shorter trips. Just like its larger brother, the Woodsman has a double bottom, tumpline, cord, and D-rings on the side, and padded shoulder straps trimmed with super-soft and supple buckskin. Large Daypack or Small Canoe Pack? You decide, since this pack excels as both. A great first canoe pack for the budding canoeist in your crew. No. 757 $200

Cliff Jacobson Signature Canoe PackThis medium-sized day pack for canoeing is designed with help from outdoor writer, Eagle Scout, and canoeist Cliff Jacobson. Sized smaller than the Woodsman and Timber Cruiser Jr., it’s meant to go light and fast or supplement another larger pack for a full camping kit. 2 Built from a lighter weight 10.10 oz waxed canvas the pack is spryer than it’s older “cousin” the Nessmuk pack. The top flap is longer, the inside zippered pocket is bigger, the grab handle has been moved, and twin pockets are a “2-in-1” design. 16"h x 12"w x 5.5"d (plus pockets). 1900 ci.

Map CaseKeeping maps dry and pro-tected on a canoe trip is vital to maintaining your bearings. Clear vinyl keeps maps fresh, clean, secure, and readable. No Velcro here, a rust-proof nylon zipper keeps contents con-tained. Brass grommets allow you to secure it to a pack or canoe. Keep track of your maps; use a Frost River Map Case.No. 790 $30

Palisade Attachable Portage PackNeed a drink or a shot of bug spray on a portage? No problem, it can be at your fingertips if you wear a pack up front. Seeking a modular approach to canoe trips, the Palisade pack works to break up your gear. 2 Snap hooks detach from a main pack and allow you to drop the bulk of the gear at camp and travel with a smaller pack for the day. Back-straps will need an attachment system built. We offer an installation kit that will allow you install the rings yourself, or you may ship us the pack and we’ll be happy to set it up, or order the whole rig all at once. 2 12.5"h x 12.5"w x 7"d (plus pockets), 1,094 ci.No. 786 $120

Campfire TentWilderness canoeist Bill Mason favored this tent and described it in his wonderful book

Song of the Paddle. 2 The roof has a 45°-slope to shed rain and give you headroom. Good conditions? Find shade under the canopy or sleep with a view of the stars.

Inclement weather? Adjust the canopy and side-wings for the protection you need. The extra living space keeps the interior clean and dry. Another advantage you’ll appreciate: you can cook protected from the elements. 2 Available in two sizes: a two-person and a three-to-four person version. The bigger size fits three adults comfortably (up to four but it’s cozy). 2 Our Tents are durably constructed of the highest quality canvas, reinforced in all the right places and screened with no-seeum netting. The actual canvas used is a 100-percent cotton Sunforger 10.10-ounce army duck fabric. It’s flame retardant, water repellent and mildew resistant. The awning works with an optional end cover with a smoke hole that laces on and zips open. 2 You’ll feel at home with the Campfire Tent, whether car camping with the family or canoeing in the Boundary Waters. Color: natural. Please allow two weeks for manufacturing as we build them to order.No. 358 2-Person Tent $820 No. 359 4-Person Tent $950 No. 361 Pole Package $300 No. 362 End Cover with smoke hole $250Log on to FrostRiver.com for specifications and accessories.

Here you are... finally! On the biggest island in the biggest lake on the biggest island in the biggest lake on the biggest

Nessmuk PackThis nostalgic pack has stepped right out of the history

books. Nessmuk, the alter ego of writer George Wash-ington Sears, popularized Adirondack-style camping, ultralight canoes used with a double-bladed paddle and the Maine Guide Pack (which this pack is based on) back in the late 1800s. He

wrote his classic book Woodcraft in 1884 and it has been in print ever

since. 2 The Nessmuk is just the right size for a North Woods guide’s day-tripping sundries: rain coat, lunch, field guides, binoculars, knife, first-aid and survival kit. Features cotton web backstraps, a small zippered pocket inside, and a leather grab

handle. Rain flaps buckle under the top flap. 16"h x 12"w x 51⁄2"d (plus pockets). 1,900 ci.

Sojourn & Sojourn Skinny

Got stuff? Consider stowing it in a Sojourn Pack. This could be a “do-it-all” pack for use on or off the beaten path. Two styles are available. The Sojourn Skinny (shown) is a classic envelope pack that makes a low profile, streamlined traditional daypack. 2 The Sojourn

is also available with more capacity as a box style pack featuring gussets with slip pockets on each side. Both styles have a full length pocket at the back of the pack. Your choice to have it padded or not. Zippered pocket included inside. Box style: 16"h x 15"w x 5"d. Premium Shell BagsNothing fancy here. Just simple, functional shoulder bags that will serve you well for years. But what is a “shell” bag? Well, you can use it as a beach combing bag for picking up shells on Florida’s Sanibel Island…and it is shaped somewhat like a giant bivalve mol-lusk, but that’s not the actual meaning of the name. The real lineage of these bags goes back a century or more; they were created to carry shotgun shells. Times change and most folks now use them for purses or field bags. 2 Made of water-resistant waxed can-vas with an internal slip pocket. Includes adjustable leather shoulder strap with pad.No. 565 Medium 8"h x 11"w x 23⁄4"d $85 No. 566 Large 10"h x 13"w x 3"d $95

Essentials BagThe Essentials Bag is essentially a classy canvas and leather bag to carry all your essentials. The rich leather —more than on any of our other shoulder bags— wraps all the way around the bottom and up the sides to protect high-wear areas. And like all of our bags with lots of leather on them, this shoulder bag will develop real character over the years. Zippered pocket inside. Leather shoulder strap. 2 The Essentials will hold together whether carrying musket balls or geology field samples. Of course it’ll hold up well as a lighter duty shoulder bag (purse) too. 9"h x 12"w x 4"d.No. 607 $120

Large in volume (check √…1,428 cubic inches!), dirt and water resistant (check √…waxed

Bazaar ToteMarrakesh, Morocco—Jmaa el Fna bazaar: sunlight streams over the Atlas Mountains, spilling into the market square of the medina, or old town. Old men drink strong coffee in an outdoor cafe as a mangy cat waits for scraps. A few drums have already started when the wail of the muezzin calls the faithful to first prayers. Soon the market will turn into a throbbing mass of humanity and spectacle—a ragtag acrobats in tattered silk shirts perform amazing balancing acts, Tarot card readers predict the unseeable future, turbaned snake charmers trick their pet cobras, vendors of exotic fabrics haggle and hawk. 2 The Bazaar Tote is at home here (but also makes a great baby bag or grocery-getter). Four snaps secure the top. Adjustable leather handles. 14" x 17" x 6".

If Ian Flemming had designed a briefcase for his most famous spy, this would be the one. Two outside zippered compartments

combined with a plethora of small pockets inside add up to easy organization. You don’t

have to carry an exploding Parker Pen, a bullet-

deflecting Rolex watch/saw or an Ericsson cell

phone that doubles as a lock pick, laser gun and remote driv-ing device to put this bag to good use. 2 Strong

leather handles. There are two outside zippered pockets and multiple inside pockets. Lots of leather accents. 13"h x 153⁄4"w x 4"d

Great packs for the day, if your day consists of kayaking off a waterfall, hunting for your own food and sleeping in a hammock. If your day involves walking

the Upper East Side, well, they’re good for that too.

Mesabi Range PackAt home in Chicago, Eveleth or North Hegman Lake, the

Mesabi Range will serve you well wherever you travel. 2 Inside there’s room to pack a lunch or stow the goods from a quick stop at the market. An internal sleeve ports three small pockets on the outer side to sort pens, pencils, a calculator, or phone, and easily accommodates a laptop computer or folders full of schoolwork. 2 Harness leather backstraps, solid brass hardware, and waxed cotton canvas combine to make a robust daypack. you need to learn about them in school. 16"h x 12"w x 5d.No. 822 $140

Summit Boulder Jct.

Everyone needs a hug from a friend now and then; and this pack could be your new best buddy. The tall, narrow design hugs your back, making it a very comfortable carry whether summiting Eagle Mountain, biking to the office, or portag-ing into Poohbah Lake in the Quetico. 2 Compression via cinching cord and D-rings running the full length of the pack is the key to managing loads so it rides comfortably close to your back. Zippered bottom compartment, a sleeve at the back, and a buckled pocket on the front offer many hauling options. 2 Valuable input from the adventurers at Camp Manito-wish in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin helped transform our versatile Summit Pack into an adaptable travel

companion. Thanks Walter! 24"h x 11"w x 9"d.No. 895 $220

Itinerant Day PackIf your ranging requires a trusty pack, the Itinerant lives up to its name. Just because

it’s at home in a duck blind, doesn’t mean it can’t blend in with Ivy League décor. 2 A wanderer doesn’t need to live in Middle Earth to appreciate the 18-oz waxed canvas durability. A full-sized laptop slips neatly into the main compartment, the outside zippered com-partment offers dividers, and the inside pocket is ready to protect electronics or whatever treasures you need to keep high and dry. Modern design, unchanged materials: tough cotton, solid brass and heavy leather. 16"h x 12"w x 5"d.No. 895 $110

Knapsack“Do nothing in haste,” wrote Edward Whymper after his first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1868, “look well to each step; and from the beginning think what may be the end.” We took Mr. Whymper’s words to heart as we designed this pack: simple and well thought out — much like the ones we see him wearing in old engravings from the Golden Age of Mountaineering. 2 The generous top-flap

buckles over the pack’s ample opening; cordlock and drawstring cinch out

spindrift and alpine blasts. Comfort-ably wide cotton web shoulder straps plus a large grab loop complete the pared-down elegance of the Knapsack. Now you’re ready to follow in Whymper’s footsteps, or

simply carry one of his books down to the coffee shop. 16"h x 16"w x 4"d.No. 817 $90

Geologist PackRoaming the North Country in search of Iron Ore can lead an intrepid young geologist into all sorts of adventure. James Byron Hustad—known as J.B.H.— explored Minnesota’s Iron Range in search of underground deposits for U.S. Steel in the middle of the last century. Equipped with his trusty “rucksack” he would often travel by canoe or float plane into secluded roadless areas. 2 Our Geologist Daypack is modelled after the one J.B.H. carried on explorations in the U.S., Canada, Brazil and Africa, often base camping for weeks prospect-ing uncharted claims. He lived a life of exploration, self reliance, and survival that any adventurer could envy. 2 16"h x 20"w x 4"d. Holds approximately 1,920 ci.
