    FRP Tank Concrete Foundation

    bysahsanb 14 Sep 2012, 05:56

We recently observed some damage to concrete foundation of an FRP tank. As part of

verification I need to verify if the concrete foundation is in complete adherence toapplicable standards. Based on your experience can you please identify a standard which

allows me to judge what kind of foundation is required for different size, material and

service tanks. Along with this there is another debate I need to settle that as FRP tanks

are inherently not as flat as metallic AST tanks at the time of commissioning, so we apply

a Sand to Bitumen mixture with varying ratios on top of concrete foundation before FRP

tank is installed. Would appreciate if you guys can identify a standard which covers

weather one needs to apply such a mixture or something similar on foundation or not.

The answer to your query is covered in BS 4994 (Design and construction of vessels and

tanks in reinforced plastics). Reproducing below the relevant appendix on foundations:

Appendix H Recommended supports for vertical vessels and tanks

The recommended supports for vertical vessels and tanks are either:

    a) a suitably prepared concrete plinth; or

    b) a steel plate supported on an adequate grillage and of sufficient thickness to ensure

that local strains in the flat bottom are not greater than the designs strain.

Leveled off earth bases whether or not in-filled with sand or other granular material arenot adequate supports and should not be used.
