game. The Auburn senior helped defeat Oregon 22-19.

BURNS ENDS COLLEGE CAREERWITH NATIONAL TITLE

Winning the BCS national championship game was a dream comes true for Kodi Burns, who caught an excit-ing 35 yard touchdown pass to score the first points of the contest. The heavily watched nationally televised game had a thrilling finish, with Auburn coming out on top.

Burns is a former Fort Smith Northside High School standout. As a youth, he excelled at basketball, baseball and football while playing at the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club.

Kodi and his two brothers, Khyyam and Kenrick, all participated at the Club. Khyyam Burns played football at Arkansas State University, and was a free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs. Kenrick is currently a Junior at Northside High.

During his career at Auburn, Kodi Burns played wide receiver, quarterback and running back. His leadership helped mold a championship team. He is the son of Kim and Dazzle Burns.

MALZAHN AWARDED TOP COLLEGE FOOTBALL HONOR

Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club alum Gus Malzahn won the prestigious Broyles award, which goes to the top assistant college football coach in the nation. The trophy was pre-sented to Malzahn at a special luncheon held in Little Rock on December 5.

Malzahn, offensive coordi-nator for the Auburn Tigers, led his team to the BCS national championship by defeating Oregon. Auburn went 14-0 on the season. Prior to the national championship game, Malzahn received several head coaching offers from Division I teams.

“This season has been a blessing,” Malzahn added. “Being a part of the Auburn Family, especially at this moment, has been a wonderful experience. Coach Broyles gave me my first job as a college coach. I grew up in Arkansas and it has just made all of this very special to me.”

Malzahn’s first coaching experience was at the Evans Boys & Girls Club as a teen. He was a standout athlete in Junior High and High School. Gus worked at the Boys & Girls Club part-time. At the Club, he coached soccer, baseball, football and was grounds-keeper at Hunts Park.

He later attended the University of Arkansas and Henderson State University. His college room-mate at Henderson State was Jeff Inness, who is now the executive director of the Alma Boys & Girls Club. Inness is also a former Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club member. Malzahn was guest speaker at the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club Awards banquet in 2006.

In his second season as Auburn’s offensive coordinator and quarterback coach, Malzahn led an offensive attack that ranked first in the Southeastern Conference and seventh in the nation in total offense, averaging 497.7 yards per game. The Tigers also lead the SEC and rank sixth nationally in both scoring and rush-ing, averaging 42.7 points and 287.2 yards rushing per game in 2010.

Malzahn was instrumental in the outstanding season of Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton. Newton shattered several offensive records at Auburn. He became just the second player in FBS history to total 20 touchdowns rushing and passing in a single season

“I feel like the Broyles award is something that all of our coaches had a part in winning,” Malzahn said. “The coaches and the players have worked very hard this season and they all share in this award.”

BRETT GOODE SIGNS EXTENSIONWITH GREEN BAY PACKERS

Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club alum Brett Goode inked a two-year deal with the Green Bay Packers on January 4, 2011. Goode, a three-year veteran of the NFL, has become one of the most respected deep-snappers in professional football.

Originally picked up by the Packers Sept. 1, 2008, Goode has been virtually flawless during his NFL career. The former Northside High and Arkansas Razorback player, started his football playing career at the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club at age 6.

Besides handling snaps for punts, extra points and field goals, Goode prides himself in making tackles. He was presented the game ball for special teams on January 2 after he tackled punt returner Devin Hester twice in the same game.

Last February, “Brett Goode Day” was held at the Evans Boys & Girls Club unit. Goode signed autographs and visited with friends and family. He is the son of Mark and Kim Goode of Fort Smith.

OPTIMIST QUEEN CONTESTANTSRAISE $ 11,000 FOR FSBGC

It was a perfect day for football, and Hunts Park was packed with spectators during the annual Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club Optimist Day football bowl games held on October 30 and November 1. Queen contestants from all three leagues (representing all four Club units) helped raise more than $11,000 for the event.

Various fundraisers, including bake sales, car washes, and raffles were used in an effort to raise funds for the contest. All proceeds benefit the FSBGC football and cheer programs.

Queen contestants each receive a trophy and a floral ar-rangement during the ceremony. The Queen in each league is crowned by the team captain of the team she represents. The event is held annually during the last week of the FS-BGC football season.

Rhonda Murphy and Maisie Strickland were event coordinators. “We were very happy the weather was so nice” said Murphy. “All the girls looked beautiful and each of them did a great job during the ceremony” she added. The Queens crowning ceremony at Hunts Park has been an on-going Boys & Girls Club Club tradition for more than 50 years.

Display booths are located next to the concession stand. The contestant having the most money counted from her display container is named the winner. During the past 10 years, more than $100,000 has been raised through the contest.
