DIACONATE In a couple weeks on September 15th and “God willing” the parish will have a second deacon.

Although you may have watched, the deacon in action, you may not know the history of deacons,

their position in the hierarchy of the church, and the roles they are ordained to perform.

HISTORY - Various books of the New Testament (written between approximately 50 and 150

A.D.) bear witness to an array of collaborators who carried out various tasks: missionary

preaching, teaching, prophecy, shepherding of communities, administration, and charitable

works. The New Testament text most commonly associated with deacons is the Apostles’

selection of seven men to conduct the distribution of food to the Jerusalem community.

(Acts 6:1-6).

During the next epoch, between 400 A.D. and 1000, the diaconate gradually lost its

identity. However, Vatican Council II (1962–1965) ushered in a new era for the order of deacons.

In its Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, the council decreed that the permanent diaconate

could be restored — at the request of bishops to the pope, and with the pope’s approval — and to

even ordain married men to it. Since Vatican II, the ordination of permanent deacons has steadily

increased.

HIERARCHY – One of the seven sacraments, Holy Orders establishes the hierarchy of the

Church. The term “orders” is derived from the Latin “ordines,” which means “ranks.”

Theologically speaking, holy orders is a single sacrament with three grades: the order of

bishops (episcopate); the order of presbyters (presbyterate); and the order of deacons

diaconate). Bishops and presbyters are ministerial priests, meaning they have the power to act in

the person of Christ as the head of the Church. They do so in celebrating the sacraments,

teaching, and governing.

Deacons do not participate in the ministerial priesthood of Christ. Rather, the term “deacon” —

derived from the Greek “diakonos” — expresses a distinct role: “minister” or “servant” to the

ordained priesthood. By virtue of ordination, bishops, presbyters and deacons receive a

sacramental “character” (spiritual seal) that cannot be repeated or erased.

ROLES – Although assigned to a parish, a deacon is under the direction directly to the bishop,

who can change a parish assignments and functions whenever the bishop see fit or a need.

However, a deacon has three charisms or roles in the Church, i.e. Liturgy, Proclaiming the Word

and Charity.

The deacon's Liturgical ministry includes various parts of the Mass proper to the deacon,

including being an ordinary minister of Holy Communion and the proper minister of the chalice

when Holy Communion is administered under both kinds. Deacons, like priests and bishops, are

ordinary ministers of the sacrament of Baptism and can serve as the church's witness at the

sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Deacons may preside at funeral rites not involving a Mass (e.g.,

the final commendation at the gravesite or the reception of the body at a service in the (funeral

home), and may assist the priest at the Requiem Mass. They cannot hear confession and give

absolution, anoint the sick, or celebrate Mass.

The deacon's ministry of Proclaiming the Word includes proclaiming the Gospel during the

Mass, preaching and teaching in such areas as RCIA, CCD and Adult studies.

In their ministry of Charity permanent deacons often serve in a parish or other ministry as their

time permits, since they typically have other full-time employment. Deacons often work

directly in ministry to the marginalized inside and outside the church: the poor, the sick, the

hungry, the imprisoned.

The deacon ordination will be on September 15, 2018 at 10:30 AM at the Cathedral of the Sacred

Heart in Richmond. If you are interested in attending, arrangements are underway to get a bus. Watch

for details in the bulletin.
